Keselowski Makes It Two In A Row; Wins Bubba Burger 250

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 10:33 PM PDT

Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Richmond, VA, United States (AHN) – Let’s win two.

That’s what NASCAR Natiowide Series points leader Brad Keselowski was saying Friday night as he won his second consecutive Nationwide race by capturing the Bubba Burger 250 at Richmond International Speedway.

Keselowski, who has faced a roller-coaster week, pitted with six laps to go and it was the right call as he drove to the front and around Kyle Busch to win for the second time in six days.

“Our car was just so strong tonight. Paul Wolf (crew chief), the whole Ruby Tuesday team, they gave us a great Dodge Charger. We put it in the right spot at the right time on the green-white-checkered finish,” said Keselowski. “I wanted it to pay off. I knew if we lost this race because we didn’t take tires, I would be so mad. So, I came down and got tires, made the right move with Greg (Biffle) on the last lap and it all worked out.”

Keselowsi won last week at Talladega, but days later he was penalized 50 points by NASCAR for rules violations found on his car in post-race inspections.

Greg Biffle finished second and was followed by Jamie McMurray, while Busch and Carl Edwards rounded out the top-five finishers.

“We didn’t have the car tonight. We fought there when we got back in traffic and tried to get back up towards the front. We could on the long run, but we just didn’t have anything for the 22 (Brad Keselowski) tonight. He was so stellar,” said Busch.

“The NOS Energy Drink Camry was probably a second-place car and if anybody wanted to know what it takes to stay out — that’s what it took to stay out, and that’s what happens when you stay out. I think Dave Rogers (Busch’s NSCS crew chief) makes the right calls. Tonight was my call to stay out. Jason (Ratcliffe, NNS crew chief) wanted to come in. I just wanted to see what it would just do. You have to hold them off for a green-white-checkered, and obviously this is the best that I could fight them off.”

Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Reed Sorenson, Brendan Gaughan and Matt Kenseth comprised the top-10 fiinishers as Cup regulars took eight of the top-10 finishing spots.

Kyle Busch Takes Pole At Richmond

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 10:33 PM PDT

Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Richmond, VA, United States (AHN) – Kyle Busch won the pole for Friday night’s Nationwide Series race then captured the front starting spot for Saturday night’s Health Calhoun 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway.

Busch’s No. 18 Toyota was the only ride to eclipse the 127-mph barrier as he topped fellow Toyota drive David Reutimann for the top starting spot.

“It’s nice to sit on a pole every once in a while. I only get the opportunity maybe once a year if lucky. Great effort by the team. Guys did an awesome job. This M&M’s Camry was nice once we unloaded,” said Busch. “Dave (Rogers, crew chief) has done a good job this year. Thank him for working all the hours and hard work that he does. Of course, the whole rest of the team as well. They’ve done a lot to come here. Richmond is one of my best race tracks for some reason. Maybe not one of my favorites, but definitely one of my best.”

Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who has owned this trackc over the last few seasons, qualified third and rounding out the top-5 was Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman.

Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray, Brian Vickers and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top-10 qualifiers.

“Just a little too loose on my second lap. I went for it (pole). I thought that my second lap would be a little bit faster. Everybody is running pretty good second laps and I just got a bit loose. A great effort by everyone on this 12 Dodge team,” said Keselowski. “A great first lap that puts us near the top of the leader board. We made improvements all day on our race car. Great calls by Jay (Guy, crew chief) and the guys to give me a fast Dodge and starting spot near the front tomorrow night.”

Michael McDowell, Max Papis and Dave Blaney were the only three drivers who failed to qualify for the 43-car field.

Bruins-Flyers To Meet For First Time In Decades

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 10:33 PM PDT

Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor

Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – The last time the Philadelphia Flyers met the Boston Bruins in the playoffs was during the 1978 semifinals where the Bruins won in five games.

It was physical game of fierce checking over three decades ago, and Saturday’s battle won’t be any different.

Philadelphia had three players with 126 minutes in the reflection box. Boston’s bruiser Shawn Thornton collected 141, the only one with 100 or more minutes.

“You can definitely be physical and get in a guy’s face without taking penalties,” Boston forward Michael Ryder told the Boston Herald. “It’s going to be, definitely, a physical series.”

Meanwhile, there’s plenty of pint up hostility to go around, as the two city’s clash in the Eastern Conference semifinals in Boston.

Boston and Philadelphia met four times in the playoffs including, a 1974 Stanley Cup final.

“If you come in feeling good about yourself and the team feels good about itself, anything is possible,” said Flyers goalie Brian Boucher.

The Flyers will have to get by rookie Tuukka Rask, who averaged 2.18 goals against average with .927 save percentage in one round.

“In Boston, Tuukka Rask had a great season, played well down the stretch,” Boucher told CSNPhilly.com Wednesday.

“They got Tim Thomas there who’s pretty good. But Tuukka has done the job there. It goes to show you anything is possible. It’s all about how you’re playing going into postseason.”

Philadelphia won the season series 2-1-1, but that’s not enough to convince some.

“They have played very well,” Chris Pronger said. “I’ve been watching the games. He’s not sliding all over there. He is very square, very methodical in the net. You gotta get traffic on him. They’ve also gotten very timely goal scoring and they capitalize on their chances.”

But neither one has won a Cup, as the streak continues, but maybe this is the year, one will grab their place in history.

An old school battle- for the new decade starts Saturday at 12:30 E.T.

AHN Sports Staff

Dallas, TX, United States (AHN) – Wide receiver Patrick Crayton will no longer participate in any voluntary offseason workouts with the Dallas Cowboys until a trade is worked out, his agent confirmed Friday.

Crayton’s agent, Fred Lyles, said the wide receiver is demanding a trade after the Cowboys drafted former Oklahoma Sooners wideout Dez Bryant last week.

Apparently, Crayton is not keen of the possibility of teaming up with Bryant and immediately asked his agent for a trade.

Crayton, 31, was a Second-Team All-Pro selection after having a breakout performance last season.

Crayton, who recorded 37 catches for 622 yards with five touchdowns last season, is scheduled to meet with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones next week.

Lyles said his client won’t anymore attend offseason workouts, unless it’s mandatory.

Aside from Crayton, second-stringer wideout Sam Hurd also demanded a trade.

Hurd, 25, recorded seven catches for 121 yards with one touchdown.

Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor

NY, NY, United States (AHN) – New York Giants punter Jeff Feagles will retire after 22 NFL seasons, he announced at a press conference Friday at Timex Performance Center.

Feagles, 44, played 352 consecutive games, a record that’s still active in the league.

He was beginning to feel the effects of playing three decades.

“This game takes a toll on your body, and eventually it tells you you can’t do it anymore,” Feagles said. “That day is today.”

Feagles was hoping to return for another season, but he started encountering physical problems during the Giants’ offseason program.

He reportedly told the team before the NFL Draft last week, that he was looking to hang up his cleats for good.

“My mind was telling me that I wanted to go back and do this. … But I started working out and my body is not just recovering the way it’s supposed to,” a teary-eyed Feagles told a room of reporters.

“I’m not going to be the guy that’s coming back and pulling a Brett Favre on you.”

Feagles, a undrafted free agent, started his career in New England in 1988.

He later played for the Philadelphia Eagles, the Arizona Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks. He signed with the Giants in 2003.

The two-time Pro Bowler punted 71,211 yards and 1,713 punts over his career.

Mavs Owner Cuban Steamed After Series Loss To Spurs

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 10:33 PM PDT

San Antonio, TX, United States (AHN) – Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban reportedly lost his temper Friday, after his team got eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Multiple sources reported Cuban told his public relations officer to confiscate a tape, which showed the owner in a disparaging mood.

After the Spurs went on to upset the Mavs 97-87 in game 6, Cuban reportedly went to a small room inside ATA&T with his head down.

A TNT cameramen took the actual the footage of a seemingly frustrated owner, but Cuban ordered his staff to recover the tape.

Cuban needed another few minutes, before he spoke up with the media.

“Congratulations to the Spurs. George Hill emerged as the star and really was the difference-maker. They deserve to win. They’re a Texas team, so I guess I’ll be rooting for them the rest of the way. I’m proud of our guys and the way they kept on fighting back,” Cuban told reporters Thursday. “I’m not so proud of the NBA.

It was another playoff disappointment for the Mavs, who lost an opening round series for the third time in four years.

The Mavs, who clinched the second seed in the West with 55-27 record, struggled to beat the Spurs smothering defense as they went on to lose in six games.

Cuban, who bankrolled a midseason trade to nab Caron Butler, said he remains optimistic the Mavs would have a championship run next season.

However, with the looming free agency of Dirk Nowitzki, Cuban and the Mavs might be headed to a major overhaul this offseason.

Fulham FC: From England’s Fourth Tier To Europa Cup Final In 14 Years

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 10:33 PM PDT

a.lawn1986@googlemail.com – AHN Sports Correspondent

London, United Kingdom (AHN) – In 1996, Fulham FC finished 17th out of 24 in the fourth tier of English football.

Fourteen years on the club is celebrating one of the most rapid rises in English soccer history and progression to the club’s first ever European final.

The club’s remarkable rise from being on the verge of losing their league status began in February of 1996, when they bravely appointed then captain, Micky Adams as player-manager.

Adams settled into his new role quickly and engineered a quick turnaround in the team’s fortunes.

A good run of results towards the end of the 1995-96 season saw Fulham pull clear of the relegation zone.

But in a telling indication of who far this once illustrious club has fallen came in the celebrations of a 17th place finish, the lowest in the clubs history, which was heralded as a success.

Having ‘acheived’ this Adams set about re-invigorated his squad and masterminded promotion in his first full season as manager.

Adams, and Fulham, were only denied the title after the FA scrapped the traditional deciding factor; goal difference in favour of goals scored, giving Wigan Athletic the crown.

Given then Fulham chairman, Jimmy Hill had advocated that very same policy change, second place could have proved a bitterly ironic pill to swallow.

Despite the denial of silverwear however promotion was more than even the most optimistic Fulham fans could have wished for and the club was on it’s way, although the architect Micky Adams was to play almost no further part.

In the summer of 1997 Egyptian businessman Mohammed Al Fayed purchased the club, partly inspired by it’s proximity to his famous London store, Harrods.

Now flush with cash, expectations rose and a poor start to the new campaign would cost Adams his job as Al Fayed fired the catalyst for the revival in favour of his management “dream team” of Ray Wilkins and Kevin Keegan.

Despite the perceived harshness at the treatment of Adams, Al Fayed’s choice was to prove a wise one.

A year on it didn’t look like it would be after an argument over team selection saw Wilkins resign, handing the full managerial reigns to Keegan in the process.

The former Liverpool and Hamburg hero soon steadied the ship and, aided by a seemingly unlimited transfer budget Keegan guided the club up another level in 1999.

Having taken the club onto the next level Keegan left to takeover the top job in English soccer with his appointment as manager of the national team.

Paul Bracewell was installed in Keegan’s stead but lasted only until March 2000 when, with mid-table mediocrity looming, Bracewell was removed to be replaced by Frenchman Jean Tigana.

Tigana, aided by some inspired signings including a young Louis Saha, led Fulham to their third promotion in five years, leading the club to the Premier League in 2000-01.

Once in the promised land, Tigana was able to lay some Premier League foundations and the club has remained in the top-flight ever since.

Despite maintaining Premier League status since their elevation under Tigana, Al Fayed’s ambition put paid to a series of high profile managers including Tigana, Chris Coleman and former Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez.

With another lowly finish looming Sanchez became Al Fayed’s latest victim in December 2007.

With Sanchez gone, Al Fayed turned to the experience of journeyman manager Roy Hodgson and Fulham hasn’t looked back.

Hodgson’s tenure started with a 2-1 loss to Chelsea on New Year’s Day 2008, but improved results towards the end of the season saw Fulham dramatically avoid relegation.

The next season was much better and a run to the FA Cup Quarter-Finals was coupled with a 7th placed finish seeing the club qualify for the 2009-10 Europa Cup.

The stats boded well for Fulham, which had never lost at home in European Competition, with a record of 11 wins and four draws, although most pundits believed Fulham would do well to make it through the group stage.

The pundits were to bow to the stats.

The club comfortably saw off Lithuanian club Vetra 6-0 on aggregate and Russians Amkar Perm in the qualifying rounds, before emerging unscathed from a group containing FC Basel, CSKA Sofia and Italian giants AS Roma.

Ukranian Champions Shaktar Donetsk were next up for the Cottagers but a 3-2 aggregate win saw the vanquished with another Italian giant in Juventus next up and similarly eliminated.

The Juventus tie saw Fulham comeback from 3-1 down to seal their quarterfinal place, but more importantly it imbued within them a confidence to go on.

German Champions Wolfsburg suffered at the hands of Fulham’s new found belief before a Volcanic Ash affected semi-final tie with another German club, Hamburg saw Fulham complete their remarkable tale.

A 0-0 draw in Hamburg was followed up with a 2-1 win at Craven Cottage clinching Fulham a European final against Athletico Madrid.

From fourth tier to European final in 14 years?

Fulham is the English soccer definition of the American Dream.

Tiger Misses Cut At Quail Hollow; Mayfair Takes Lead

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 10:33 PM PDT

Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor

Charlotte, NC, United States (AHN) – Tiger Woods missed the 36-hole cut at the Quail Hollow Championship Friday.

Woods shot the second worst round of golf in his career with a 79. Billy Mayfair forged a one-shot lead at 8-under over Angel Cabrera thanks in part to a birdie on the final hole.

Woods, who missed a tour cut at the 2005 Byron Nelson Classic, U.S. Open in 2005, and at the British Open last season, had not opened an event this poorly since the 2007 Players Championship, where he shot a 75.

Players scoring in the low 70s and with ties will qualify during the two weekend rounds.

Missing the cut means players don’t partake in the $6.4 million purse.

Woods had three bogeys and three birdies through his first nine holes Friday, shooting a 2-over-par 74 and lost even further ground on the back nine.

Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Paul Goydos are all in the mix at 6-under after playing solid rounds of golf.

Ankle Injury Could Push Quarterback Favre Into Retirement

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 10:33 PM PDT

AHN Sports Staff

Minneapolis, MN, United States (AHN) – Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre is reportedly weighing his options for a possible retirement due to a nagging ankle injury, a major sport news outlet reported Friday.

Favre, three-time NFL MVP, informed ESPN an aggravating ankle injury could hinder him from playing again in the NFL.

Favre, who turns 41 in October, suffered the ankle injury in the NFC Championship game against the New Orleans Saints last February.

He said orthopedist Dr. James Andrews found out the injury has not healed and would need surgery for him to play next season.

It was a familiar scenario for Favre, who also underwent a surgery on a slightly torn biceps in his right shoulder before signing a two-year, $25 million deal with the Vikings last season.

Facing adversity, Favre wants to know if the Vikings are ready enough to win a Super Bowl Championship, a fine detail that could propel him to play again next season.

With still four months to go before the 2010 season, Favre has plenty of time to think about his next move.

Tigers’ Ordonez Records 2,000th Hit In Twins Shut Out

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 10:44 PM PDT

Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter

Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) – Detroit Tigers right fielder Magglio Ordonez recorded his 2,000th hit Thursday in a 3-0 shut out of the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins.

Ordonez, 36, smacked a liner to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning and finished the game 2-for-4 with a double to up his average to .310.

The milestone brings full circle a lengthy career that ran into a bump last season.

Ordonez struggled behind the plate, batting .310 with just nine homers and 50 RBI, his lowest totals since 2005, when he played just 82 games.

While the Tigers contemplated releasing Ordonez in order to avoid paying him an $18 million plate appearance incentive, his wife began sufferring from health problems.

In addition, Ordonez was booed during the World Baseball Classic by fans from his native Venezuela for backing a constitutional amendment to impose term limits for President Hugo Chavez.

The slugger absorbed the impact and returned for his 14th major league season. Through Thursday, Ordonez already has four homers, 17 RBI and a .408 on-base percentage.

Ordonez is just the sixth player from Venezuela to manage the feat, joining Omar Vizquel, Luis Aparicio, Andres Galarraga, Dave Concepcion and Bobby Abreu.

Spurs Finish Off Mavs, Move Into Conference Semis

San Antonio, TX, United States (AHN) – Manu Ginobili tallied a team-high 26 points to go along with five assists and two boards, as the seventh-seeded San Antonio Spurs finished off the Dallas Mavericks 97-87 Thursday in Game 6 of their Western Conference quarterfinals at AT&T Center.

It marked the first time since the NBA adapted the best-of-seven first round format in 2003 that a No. 7 seed defeated a second seed.

The victory was also a sweet revenge for the last year’s first-round exit courtesy of the same Mavericks team.

In the semifinals, the Spurs will face the winner of the Suns-Trail Blazers series.

Portland holds a 3-2 advantage and has a chance to advance to the next round of playoffs with a victory Thursday night.

George Hill added 21 and six rebounds, while Tim Duncan logged 17 points and a game-best 10 boards for the victors.

Dirk Nowitzki poured in 25 of his 33 points in the second half, but it was not enough to help Mavericks, who were aiming to become the ninth team in NBA history to bounce back from a 3-1 series deficit.

The Mavs staved off elimination Tuesday when Caron Butler posted a playoff career-best 35 points in a 103-81 Game 5 triumph over the Spurs.

On Thursday, Butler had 25 and three boards, while Rodrigue Beaubois chipped in 16 points off the bench in the loss.

Middleweight Favorites Make Statement At Bellator 16

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 09:38 PM PDT

Shawn Krest – AHN Sports Correspondent

Kansas City, Missouri, United States (AHN) – The Bellator middleweight favorites all made a statement in the first round of the season two tournament at Bellator 16 Thursday night in Kansas City.

Season one finalist Jack Hess won by submission. Russian Alexander Shlemenko, signed earlier in the week, put on a striking exhibition in winning a unanimous decision.

Eric Schambari won by first-round tapout and called out fellow middleweight Bryan Baker. In response, Baker matched the first-round stoppage and accepted Schambari’s challenge.

Schambari, a WEC veteran, defeated former Ultimate Fighter contestant Luke Zachrich by arm triangle choke at 3:34 of the first round.

Schambari took Zachrich down twice early in the round. The second time, he was able to catch Zachrich in the arm triangle and get the tapout. Schambari moved to 12-1 with his eighth submission, while Zachrich fell to 10-2.

After the bout, Schambari declared, “I want Bryan Baker,” who was scheduled to fight later in the night.

In December, 2007, Baker defeated Schambari by split decision at WEC 31. Two judges had that bout 29-28 in Baker’s favor, while the other had the same score for Schambari.

Schambari dominated the striking in that first match-up, but Baker kept him constantly defending against submission attempts, getting a slight edge from the judges with his grappling superiority.

Baker answered Schambari’s challenge by posting an even faster first-round victory by TKO. Fighting against Sean Loeffler, Baker landed an early right hand, then took Loeffler down.

Standing in Loeffler’s guard, Baker landed a solid left hand to the body of his prone opponent. The shot froze Loeffler, and Baker fell on him and landed hammer fists until the referee stepped in to stop it.

“I saw his belly open,” Baker said. “He didn’t want to get hit in the face, so I had to take that shot–a straight left to that gut that took his will.”

The end came at 2:43 of the first. Baker moved to 12-1 with his sixth knockout. Loeffler fell to 18-5, snapping a six-fight win streak.

After the fight, Baker responded to Schambari.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Baker said. “Let’s see what he’s learned.”

In a third miiddleweight match-up, Alexander Shlemenko made his Bellator debut. The big Russian was signed earlier this week and won a unanimous decision over Matt Major.

Shlemenko put on a show, bloodying Major early with spinning kicks and backfists in the first round. He also landed several solid blows to the body of Major.

Shlemenko continued to spin and land in the final two rounds while also doing great work to the body of Major. All three judges had it as a shutout-30-27 in favor of Shlemenko.

Shlemenko moved to 28-4. Major fell to 6-2, losing for the first time since late 2007.

In the final middleweight quarterfinal, season one finalist Jared Hess began his road back to a rematch with middleweight champion Hector Lombard with an impressive second-round victory.

Hess dominated former Iowa Hawkeye wrestler Ryan McGivern from the top before putting him away with a guillotine choke at 1:54 of the second round.

Hess lifted and slammed McGivern to get a takedown early in the first round. He was able to pass guard and get side control four times, never letting McGivern get back to his feet.

In the second round, Hess put McGivern on his back again, getting a takedown 49 seconds into the round. McGivern attempted to fight his way back to his feet, but Hess was able to catch him in the guillotine.

“It felt right, and I just cinched it up,” said Hess.

“I’m back here, just like last year,” Hess continued. “It’s the same thing. I’m taking it one match at a time.”

Hess moved to 10-1-1 with his seventh submission. McGivern fell to 13-7.

In a non-tournament bout, Eric Marriott submitted Demi Deeds with a second-round triangle choke. Marriott was fighting his second bout in Bellator season two, after being eliminated from the Featherweight tournament on April 8 by Joe Warren.

The bout was at a catch weight of 162 pounds, 17 pounds heavier than he fought three weeks ago.

Marriott survived a first round onslaught from Deeds. He suffered a bloody nose from a huge Deeds kick midway through the round. Marriott also had to fight out of two guillotine chokes and a knee bar in the first.

In the second, Marriott managed to get back control on Deeds, but he couldn’t get a clear shot at a rear naked choke. A short time later, however, Marriott was able to catch Deeds in a triangle choke. Deeds escaped briefly, but Marriott’s second attempt finished the show at 3:02 of the second round.

Drew Dober defeated Nick Nolte in a Lightweight bout, getting a submission via arm triangle choke at 4:45 of the first round. Dober evened his record at 2-2, while Nolte fell to 2-2 with the loss.

Danny Tims won a split decision over Brian Davidson. Scores were 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27.

Brent Weedman closed out the night with a TKO over Rudy Bears at 4:19 of the first round.

Ruff To Return Behind Sabres Bench In 2010-11; Buffalo Picks Up Coach’s Option

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 09:38 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Buffalo, NY, United States (AHN) – Coach Lindy Ruff will be back behind the Sabres bench for the 2010-11 campaign after Buffalo picked up the one-year option on Ruff’s contract, the club announced Thursday.

The move came three days after the Sabres, seeded third in the Eastern Conference, were ousted in the first-round of playoffs by the Boston Bruins in six games.

Ruff, 50, the Sabres’ winningest coach, completed his 12th season as head coach by guiding Buffalo to a 45-27-10 record and a Northern Division crown this season.

The Sabres are 483-389-122 under Ruff, who became the 15th head coach of the team in July 1997.

He is currently the longest-tenured coach in the NHL.

After helping the Sabres capture the Northeast Division and make the playoffs for the first time in three years, Ruff is seeking adjustments that could lead to a successful run to the Stanley Cup next season.

Among the focus areas will be the struggling offense highlighted in the series with the Bruins, as the Sabres power play went 0-for-20.

Ruff, who also played in the NHL for the Sabres and New York Rangers as a left winger/defenseman, steered the club to the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals in his second season as coach.

Buffalo succumbed to the Dallas Stars in six games in the championship series.

In his debut year behind the bench at Buffalo, he guided the Sabres to the 1997-98 Eastern Conference Finals.

Eagles Give Quarterback Kolb One-Year Contract Extension Worth $12.26M

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 09:38 PM PDT

Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter

Philadelphia, PA, United States (AHN) – The Philadelphia Eagles announced Thursday the signing of quarterback Kevin Kolb to a one-year contract extension worth a $12.26 million, all guaranteed, over the next two seasons.

“I’m not trying to prove anybody wrong, I’m trying to prove this organization right for making this move,” Kolb said in a news conference following the announcement. “I know there are a lot of expectations. When you get an extension and you get the starting quarterback position, regardless of where you’re at, there’s a lot of pressure and responsibility.”

Kolb spent three seasons warming the bench behind Donovan McNabb, whose trade earlier in the offseason likely spurred the Eagles to extend Colb’s contract.

The 2007 second-round draft choice filled in for an injured McNabb last season and became the first-ever quarterback to throw for 300 yards in his first two career starts.

Kolb managed four touchdowns and three picks, going 62-for-96 for 741 yards and an 88.9 QB rating in five games.

The two sides were limited by the expiring collective bargaining agreement, restricted by a rule that limits annual raises in base salary to 30 percent.

Independence, OH, United States (AHN) – A troublesome right elbow is not expected to force Cavaliers superstar LeBron James to miss any action as No. 1 seed Cleveland prepares to collide with the veteran-laden Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals Saturday.

In Tuesday’s Game 5 clincher against the Chicago Bulls, the reigning NBA MVP had to fight through the said elbow problem, utilizing his left hand in shooting the ball down the stretch.

After a re-examination by team doctors Wednesday, it was found that James had a strain in the elbow and a bone bruise of his olecranon, the bone on the bottom of the joint.

James’ shooting was affected following a blow to the said elbow in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s 96-94 win.

He finished that contest with 19 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, leading Cleveland to the franchise’s first ever postseason series win over the Bulls.

The six-time NBA All-Star and 2008 scoring champion had been dealing with soreness in his triceps, in addition to the discomfort in the elbow and numbness in his arm at times.

With additional treatment and enough rest, James is expected to lead the Cavs Saturday when they host the Celtics in Game 1 of the semifinals in a rematch from two years ago when Boston prevailed en route to the NBA championship.

Redskins Agree To Pacts With Wideouts Wade, Galloway

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 09:38 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Ashburn, VA, United States (AHN) – The Washington Redskins, in an effort to shore up their receiving corps, signed free agent veteran wide receivers Joey Galloway and Bobby Wade Thursday. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

The Redskins are hoping that Galloway, 38, and entering his 16th NFL season, could provide a deep threat for the team, which is set to gather for its next minicamp in two weeks.

In 188 career games with Seattle, Dallas, Tampa Bay and New England., Galloway has compiled 689 receptions (31st in NFL history) for 10,777 yards which ranks 26th all-time in the league and 77 TDs (23rd in NFL history).

After registering seven catches for 67 yards in three contests for the Patriots last season, Galloway signed with Pittsburgh but did not appear in any games.

Meanwhile, Wade, 29, will be playing for his fifth team since entering the league in 2003 and could be considered as a possible punt returner for Washington.

Wade, 5-10, and 186 pounds, registered consecutive seasons with more than 50 receptions in 2007 and 2008 with the Vikings.

He also becomes a candidate to be a slot receiver in Mike Shanahan’s offense.

Wade, entering his eighth NFL season, has appeared in 102 games for Chicago, Tennessee, Minnesota and Kansas City.

He has compiled 244 career receptions for 2,858 yards and nine TD and also added 22 rushing attempts for 93 yards.

Wade, a fifth-round selection in the 2003 Draft out of Arizona, also registered 1,194 yards on 50 career kickoff returns.

Also Thursday, the Redskins announced the signings of two more undrafted rookie free agents: UCLA tight end Logan Paulsen and LSU running back Keiland Williams.

Report: Indians, Red Sox Hated More Than Yankees Among MLB Fans

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 09:38 PM PDT

AHN Sports Staff

United States (AHN) – The New York Yankees might have easily booked into the list of notoriously hated teams in the MLB, but at least they did not top it.

The Nielsen Company released Wednesday the list of the league’s most despised franchises, putting the Cleveland Indians at the No.1 spot from polling it conducted.

In spite of numerous World Series titles, an unfairly large payroll to some observers, and among the cockiest fans in sports, the Yankees are surprisingly not at the top of the list, based on Nielsen’s “Sentiment Ranking” formula.

Nielsen explained the formula measured the fans various reactions – ranging from 5 to minus -5 – to the team’s messages posted online.

From MLB’s 30 teams, none received a zero or negative score, however, six still performed poorly with ratings lower than 2.

The Indians, whose last World Series title dates back in 1948, failed to woo their fans mainly because of their reputation as one of MLB’s perennial doormats.

The Boston Red Sox, known for their storied rivalry with the Yankees, also didn’t fare well as they landed at No.2 on the list.

Rounding up the top-six with below 2 rating were: the Cincinnati Reds at No.3, Houston Astros at No.4, the Yankees at No.5, and the Washington Nationals at No.6.

The Chicago White Sox at No.7, Baltimore Orioles at No.8, New York Mets at No.9, and the Los Angeles Dodgers at No. 10 also made it into the top-10 with poor fan ratings for various reasons.

On the contrary, the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics had the most positive reactions from baseball fans.

Tiger Struggles In Round One At Quail Hollow, Nine Shots Behind Van Pelt

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 09:38 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Charlotte, NC, United States (AHN) – Tiger Woods, who has played well at Quail Hollow in the past, struggled with his shot direction all day and finished the opening round with a two-over 74 at the Quail Hollow Country Club.

It was the first over-par score in the brief season so far for Woods, making his second post-scandal start after tying for fourth place at the Masters.

At one stage of his bogey-filled opening round, the current world No. 1, was four-over par before regrouping two shots on his back nine.

Woods is nine shots back behind early leader Bo Van Pelt, who shot a seven-under-par round of 65.

Three shots at four-under 68 behind Van Pelt were Geoff Ogilvy, Paul Goydos and Billy Mayfair.

Ricky Barnes, Cameron Percy and Brian Stuard each carded three-under 69s.

Ex-NBA Player Hoiberg Takes Over At Iowa State

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:51 PM PDT

AHN Sports Staff

Ames, IA, United States (AHN) – Former NBA baller Fred Hoiberg was tapped to be the next head coach of Iowa State men’s basketball team, the school announced Wednesday.

Hoibeg, who had a stellar college career with the Cyclones, returned at Iowa State to coach its men’s basketball program.

Hoiberg , known in his career as a streaky three-point shooter, played with three teams — Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, and Minnesota Timberwolves — over 10 seasons in the NBA.

After successfully undergoing a crucial heart surgery in 2005, Hoiberg retired from playing and joined the Wolves coaching staff and later front office in 2006.

In September of 2009, Hoiberg was promoted as the Wolves Vice President of Basketball Operations.

Known as “the Mayor,” Hoiberg tries to lead Iowa State back to its winning ways after missing the NCAA tournament for the fifth consecutive years.

Some detractors believe Hoirberg’s inexperience with coaching and talent scouting at the collegiate ranks could be a high risk for the Cylones.

Nevertheless, Hoiberg’s legendary image in Ames could certainly bring the basketball craze back at Iowa State and Hilton Coliseum.

Inter Milan Battles Past Barcelona, Advances To Champions League Final

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:51 PM PDT

a.lawn1986@googlemail.com – AHN Sports Correspondent

Barcelona, Spain (AHN) – Despite having established a 3-1 lead from the first-leg Inter Milan’s Champions League final place was far from certain ahead of their semifinal second leg showdown against Barcelona in the Catalan’s Camp Nou home,

Barcelona’s formidable home record and a side that is overflowing with creative and technical genius made that true.

In Lionel Messi, Barcelona also have one of, if not the, greatest players in the world.

For 28 minutes Inter stifled the expected early Barcelona onslaught, though midfielder Tiago Motta was then dismissed for pushing a hand into the face of Sergio Busquets.

Down to 10 men, Inter stopped attacking and camped on the edge of the penalty area with defenders throwing their bodies before anything which sought to breach that line.

The red card sparked furious scenes on the touchline as players and officials alike clashed over the controversial decision.

Inter’s approach frustrated the attacking flair of the Spanish giants, whose midfield and forwards craved space and time on the ball.

With time running out Barcelona began to look short on ideas and resorted to sticking central defender Gerard Pique up top as a makeshift striker.

The move smacked of desperation, but moments later looked inspired.

Pique’s deft footwork saw him evade two challenges, leaving defenders and ‘keeper alike sprawled in his wake before smashing home a goal that gave Barcelona seven minutes of hope.

Inter, aided by a harsh handball call on Yaya Toure in the build-up of a move that culminated in Bojan thinking he had got the crucial second, held on to clinch its place in the final.

Inter manager Jose Mourinho, who used to work as a translator at Barcelona, raced onto the pitch to salute the travelling fans sparking more furious and controversial scenes.

Despite losing 1-0 on the night, Inter Milan and Jose Mourinho will face Bayern Munich in the Champions League final and not Barcelona courtesy of the 3-2 aggregate win.

`World`s Worst Tennis Player` Dee Loses Libel Suit

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:51 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Tennis player Robert Dee, who filed a libel suit against a newspaper which labeled him the “world’s worst” professional player, has lost his case after the High Court threw out his defamation claim Wednesday.

Dee, 23, who is based in La Manga, Spain, sued the Daily Telegraph over its April 2008 story, which according to him was “offensive” and it could ruin his “potential” career as a tennis coach in the future.

The newspaper for its part contended that the story, which pointed out Dee’s 54 defeats in a row, when read together with another item in the same edition was arguably not defamatory.

Two stories, including a front-page piece, which were carried by the Telegraph stated:

“A Briton ranked as the worst professional tennis player in the world after 54 defeats in a row has won his first match. Robert Dee, 21, of Bexley, Kent, did not win a single match during his first three years on the circuit, touring at an estimated cost of 200,000 pounds. But his dismal run ended at the Reus tournament near Barcelona as he beat an unranked 17-year-old, Arzhang Derakshani, 6-4, 6-3. Dee lost in the second round.”

On Wednesday, Mrs. Justice Sharp rejected Dee’s argument and concluded that the claim would not likely “restore or enhance” his “reputation in any event”.

She added that the claimant’s 54 setbacks in a row during his first three years on the world ranking ITF/ATP tournaments were incontestable “true facts”.

She further stated that the newspaper had “no additional obligation” to prove that Dee “is objectively the worst professional tennis player in the world”.

Dee has sued a number of media outlets who covered the story.

He has won settlements and apologies from a large number of them, including a 12,500 pounds settlement from the BBC.

The IOC revealed that Fangaxio was only 14 at the time of the Games, not 16 like required by the IOC.

Fangxaio had placed sixth in the women’s individual floor exercises and seventh in the women’s individual vault, but was disqualified from those and every other event she participated.

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant’s No.24 jersey is the most popular jersey in the NBA for the second straight year, the league announced Wednesday.

Since the start of the 2008-09 season, the four-time NBA Champion and 12-time NBA All-Star has topped the jersey sales.

Coming in at No. 2 is Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James.

Rounding out the top 5 are Boston Celtics’ Kevin Garnett, who climbed one spot from last year to No. 3, Chicago Bulls sophomore Derrick Rose, and Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard, this year’s NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Listed at No. 6 is Miami Heat’s star Dwayne Wade followed by Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets at No. 7 and Celtics star Paul Pierce at No. 8.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s top scorer Kevin Durant barged into the top 10 for the first time, landing at No. 9.

Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets vaulted from No. 15 to the No. 10 spot.

The list is based on sales at the NBA Store in New York City and on NBAStore.com since the start of the 2009-10 campaign through April 2010.

The Lakers are also the top sellers in the league.

The defending NBA champions have led the list of popular team merchandise for the seventh time in eight years.

The Celtics are second followed by the Cavs, Bulls and Knicks.

Broncos Tackle Clady Injures Tendon, Could Miss Three Months

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:51 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Denver, CO, United States (AHN) – Denver Broncos’ Ryan Clady’s availability for Week 1 is in doubt after it was reported that the All-Pro left tackle underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a partially torn patellar tendon. The injury was sustained in a non-football-related activity.

According to the Denver Post Wednesday, the 6-foot-6, 325 pound Clad injured his knee while playing basketball over the weekend.

In the Post report, it was indicated that the tendon was 50 percent torn, which is expected to sideline the former Boise State standout for three months.

He is likely to miss the entire season, but could be cleared to play in the regular season opener in Jacksonville on Sept. 12.

The injury to Clady, who became the 11th tackle to earn Pro Bowl honors in his second season last year, will impact the blind side of Kyle Orton and the front side of Tim Tebow.

Selected 12th overall in the 2008 NFL Draft, Clady permitted the fewest sacks by any tackle in the league in his rookie year.

Meanwhile, starting right tackle Ryan Harris, who presumably is the Broncos’ top backup at left tackle, is still trying to bounce back from a toe surgery.

In the recent NFL draft, Denver selected Utah left tackle Zane Beadles in the second round. Beadles could be placed at guard or right tackle.

Magic`s Howard Docked $35,000 For Blog Comments Criticizing Refs

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:51 PM PDT

Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter

Orlando, FL, United States (AHN) – The NBA fined foul-mired Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard $35,000 Wednesday for comments made on DwightHoward.com about referees’ officiating in the Magic’s first-round series against the Charlotte Bobcats.

Howard was limited to an average of 26 minutes per game and managed just 9.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in the Magic’s four-game sweep of Charlotte.

Charlotte used three big men to foul Howard, and frustrated the center into committing several foolish fouls himself.

“Ya’ll know that that series against Charlotte drove me crazy. I mean, it was almost comical at times how I was getting fouls called on me. There was nothing I could do out there and I felt like I couldn’t move without getting that whistle blown on me,” Howard said on the blog.

“I gotta say this is the most frustrating stretch of my career. I’ve never been through four games in a row like that. But hey, we won the series and we’re moving on.”

The fine is the second levied against the star big man for comments made on the blog. The NBA docked Howard $15,000 last November.

MLB.com Writers Told To Tweet Only About Baseball

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:51 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Major League Baseball has reportedly ordered mlb.com beat writers to stop tweeting about non-baseball topics.

According to the reports, all other topics are strictly forbidden.

Apart from the belief that the move will prevent non-baseball tweets from showing up on the MLB.com Twitter feed/ aggregator, many perceive it as a reaction to the dismissal of Mike Bacsik from his radio job.

Bacsik, a former major leaguer, was booted out of job at a radio station as a result of what some observers saw as a racially-motivated tweet.

It is widely viewed that setting standards for the type of content writers post on Twitter is reasonable.

But the crackdown on all non-baseball talk from MLB.com writers, whose accounts on their daily beat have built rapport with followers, could take away a connection with fans.

Twitter guidelines were also sent to players to be mindful with their 140-character messages.

Mickelson Skips Pro-Am Due To Illness; First Round Status In Doubt

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:51 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Charlotte, NC, United States (AHN) – Phil Mickelson, who was set to play for the first time since capturing his third Masters title, withdrew from the pro-am Wednesday at the Quail Hollow Championship just five holes into the round due to illness.

The current world No. 2 had been ill in his hotel room Tuesday night.

A report by NYPost.com indicated that Mickelson, who was replaced on the sixth hole of his afternoon pro-am group, was dealing with what he described as food poisoning.

After being brought to the on-course medical center and treated for dehydration, Mickelson reportedly indicated that he fully expects to compete Thursday.

This is not the first time Mickelson has been treated for dehydration at a tournament.

At the 2009 World Golf Championships-CA, he was treated with IV on Saturday and went out the tournament.

Since his absence was due to illness, Mickelson’s status in the event after skipping the pro-am will not be affected.

Russian Newcomer Leads Middleweight Parade At Bellator 16

Posted: 28 Apr 2010 04:21 PM PDT

Shawn Krest – AHN Sports Correspondent

Kansas City, MO, United States (AHN) – Russian Alexander Shlemenko makes his Bellator debut Thursday night in Kansas City, three days after joining the promotion.

Bellator announced Shlemenko’s signing Monday, in the nick of time for the Middleweight quarterfinals, scheduled for Bellator 16 in Kansas City. The Lightweight, Welterweight, and Featherweight quarters are already completed.

At 27-4, Shlemenko has nine more wins than any other Middleweight in the field. In his last fight, Shlemenko floored former UFC fighter Sean Salmon twice with knees to the body, ending the bout with the second one at :40 of the first round.

The knee to the body led Shlemenko to victory in his only other U.S. fight, a ShoXC TKO of Robert McDaniel in 2008.

Shlemenko may be one of the favorites in the Middleweight bracket, but he didn’t draw the best first-round match-up. He will be facing Matt Major on Thursday night.

Major is only 6-1, but his specialty is American Jiu Jitsu. Shlemenko has struggled with Jiu Jitsu specialists in the past, losing three bouts in a row, all to BJJ practitioners in 2005 and 2006.

Major has fought a high level of competition in his handful of pro bouts. He won unanimous decisions over former UFC fighter Shonie Carter and ShoXC fighter Jaime Fletcher in his last three bouts. His only career loss came to UFC and Ultimate Fighter veteran Jesse Taylor.

Major first came to prominence when he was “discovered” at American Kickboxing Academy by the crew from the Tapout Versus reality series in their first season. Major is the second Tapout veteran to compete in Bellator season two, joining lightweight Pat Curran.

If Shlemenko isn’t the Middleweight favorite, then Bryan Baker is. Baker was 2-1 in the WEC, losing his only career bout to Chael Sonnen. He fought in a non tournament Bellator bout last June, beating Matt Horwich, formerly of the UFC, in a unanimous decision. He also owns a knockout over Rory Singer.

Baker will face Sean Loeffler. Loeffler has seven knockouts and ten submissions in his 18 career wins, and only two of his 22 career bouts have gone the distance. Other than a victory over former Ultimate Fighter contestant Christian Fulgium, Loeffler has not faced many well-known opponents.

Jared Hess looks to take the final step, after finishing runner up in Bellator’s first Middleweight tournament last year. Hess beat Daniel Tabera by rear naked choke in the first round, then knocked out Yosmany Cabezas in the third round to earn a trip to the Middleweight final against Hector Lombard.

The Lombard-Hess bout was a bloodbath, with doctors refusing to allow Hess to continue due to a cut over his right eye. Hess would like nothing better than to win this year’s tournament to earn a rematch with Middleweight champion Lombard.

Standing in Hess’s way is IFL veteran Ryan McGivern, who is a former Iowa Hawkeye wrestler and works as an engineer for the U.S. Army. McGivern trains at Miletich Fighting Systems and has a 13-6 career record.

Season Seven Ultimate Fighter contestant Luke Zachrich fights in the final Middleweight quarterfinal. Zachrich trains under UFC Hall of Famer Dan Severn and has a 10-1 career record. He has not lost since appearing on the Ultimate Fighter.

Zachrich will be facing fellow submission specialist Eric Schambari. The 11-1 Schambari fought three times in the WEC, losing to fellow Bellator Middleweight Bryan Baker.

Four non-tournament bouts round out the card. In the first, Eric Marriott makes his second appearance in a month for Bellator. Marriot lost to Joe Warren in the first round of the Featherweight bracket.

He takes the spot of Tyler Stinson, who won a Kansas City tryout but was then promoted to the tournament as an injury replacement. Marriott faces Demi Deeds.

In another non-tournament fight, Drew Dober (1-2) takes on Nick Nolte (2-1), who last fought on a November Strikeforce Challengers card, where he choked out Andy Waters in the first round.

Brian Davidson also fought on that Strikeforce card, scoring a 29 second knockout of Russell Patrick. He faces Danny Tims in the third non-tourney fight.

In the final matchup, Brent Weedman fights Rudy Beers. Weedman lost to Gray Maynard and Dan Hornbuckle early in his career but is riding a five-bout win streak.
