Indian Hockey Team could achieve Olympic medal in London Olympics 2012

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 03:16 AM PST

Chief Coach Jose Brasa told that in near future i.e. 2012, the present hockey team of Indian has got the capability to achieve some great results.

As in London Olympics 2012, this could only happen with the upgrading training system, as training is the backbone of achievements in Olympics.

Looking 80 years back record, in 2008, Beijing Olympics, this is for the very first time, India missed medals in hockey.

Indian hockey team is capable of winning a sure-shot medal in Olympics. But qualified trained professionals are needed to train them to do so.

Upgraded training facilities should be given to the team, which includes enough support staff, modern equipments to play, proper scheduled programme & sports psychologists too.

Before going to Spain, as Coach Jose Brasa's contract expires on Tuesday, he told that upgraded training for Indian Hockey Team is not available at present.

Brasa expressed that if Indian hockey team maintains the same kind of form, then they can win against any team, i.e. the way they played hockey in Delhi Common Wealth Games & then later on in Guangzhou Asian Games. Indian Hockey Team won over Pakistan team & England.

It's a strong gut feeling that same team players can win over qualifiers. So it's clear that team cannot just win over qualifiers, it can also win & grab medals too, if proper training is given to them in 2 coming years, before 2012 Olympics.

Brasa's recommendations to national coach Harendra Singh is to pull out his resignation & remain with the team. After Asian Games in Malaysia, when India didn't yield much, Harendra resigned.

Harendra must give re-thought to his decision & rejoin the team. Harendra's attitude is perfectly right & he awesomely understands the team.

Brasa happily expressed that he had some cherishing memories with Indian Hockey team, as on ground team members would shout in Indian language, words like ‘piche hatoo’, ‘udharr bandaa bheejo’.

Moreover from that, Brasa found Indian crowd to be the best he have seen in his lifetime. He told that he had never seen such kind of support from the crowd even in Olympics.

It's a strong gut feeling that same team players can win over qualifiers. So it's clear that team cannot just win over qualifiers, it can also win & grab medals too, if proper training is given to them in 2 coming years, before 2012 Olympics.

Marquez-Pacquiao rivalry scorches

Posted: 30 Nov 2010 01:25 AM PST

Juan Manuel Marquez has thrown open a rematch challenge to Manny Pacquiao after the former retained his lightweight title against Michael Katsidis in a ninth round TKO.

30 year old Australian challenger, Katsidis threw a nasty look at the 37 year old Marquez, to which the latter retorted with a blow out of 52-5-1, 37 Kos earning him the victory.

In 2004, Marquez had faced his sole draw against Pacquio which was quite a controversy.

The titans had clashed for the featherweight title, which Marquez managed to retain after surviving Pacquiao's lashing. Marquez retained both his WBA and IBF featherweight titles.

Four years later a rematch at 130 pounds presented itself in 2008, wherein, the boxing legend of Filipino clinched a split decision and stole away Marquez's WBC super featherweight belt.

Justifiably so , Marquez is hungry for a rematch and is also willing to step up to a 140, just in order to go head on with the world's best – Pacquiao.
Marquez slates Pacquiao's insistence on a 147 fight as an "excuse" for not levelling against him.

Marquez told CNN.com : "I know he can make that weight as when he fought [Antonio] Margarito [this month], he was just 144 pounds. So if they insist in fighting at 147, like Freddie Roach has mentioned, they are again giving excuses".

Pacquiao indicates his doubt as to whether the public even wanted to see him at loggerheads with Marquez for the third time.Pacquiao has to his laurels eight world titles.

Asian Games 2010: China’s Good Gestures For Indian Team Had Their Own Selfishness Behind That

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 10:30 PM PST

The feat achieved by China in recently concluded Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China, very clearly display their supremacy in sports in Asian Region.

Right from day one till the last day of the Games they stayed on the top of medals tally throughout 15 days and still their hunger and urge for more was never seen lowering.

Even on the last day's event of women's marathon they won gold and silver both.

In the sixteenth Asian Games of 2010 China had included two local sports popularly known as Weiqi and Xianqqi in China.

But on the other hand, an inclusion of Indian equestrian team was refused by Games officials in China so as to pass on the favour to Chinese riders

On contrary to above, the same Chinese officials did favour apparently quite a weak water polo women team from India by sponsoring them to compete in quadrennial event.

China's Waterpolo Assiciation by all means assured Indian women's water polo team's arrival in Guangzhou well before time so that they could prepare themselves well for the event.

The whole process of the team's visa approval and all documentation was done well in time and on top of that sponsored 15 member team's travel cost of over 6 lac Indian rupees (approx 13,500 USD). Even the local transportation and accommodation was sponsored by Chinese Management officials.

The reason for all this help came into limelight later when it became clear that in absence of Indian team there would have been chances of becoming this sport as a non medal sport in lack of appropriate participation by other countries and that way China would have been left away with one gold medal less than their current total tally.

Ashes 2010: Australia Recalls Bollinger And Harris For 2nd Test Match in Adelaide

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 12:12 PM PST

Now the oldest rivals of the Cricket History in the shape of Australia Vs England are face to face In Australia for Ashes Test Series.

This battle of two oldest rivals has started with a high scoring draw in Brisbane.

In the first innings of the first test match England was horrible with bat. On the other hand Australian batsmen did good job and piled up the total of 481 runs and got the lead of 221 runs.

Perhaps this was the chance that England players needed to prove their metal. Under the huge pressure of defeat England players bounced back and mopped away all the plans of Australian team by smashing whopping 517/1 runs in the second innings.

For Australia all the bowlers proved very costly but more importantly no bowler including Mitchell Johnson and Hilffenhaus  were not threatening English batsmen. This forced Australia to be satisfied with a draw.

Now the battle has moved to Adelaide where the 2nd Ashes Test match between Australia VB England will take place in next couple of days.

Now after being forced to be satisfied with unwanted draw Australian team management is not looking in any mood of sparing anyone. Mainly Mitchell Johnson and Hillfenhais are at the top of the hit-list of Australian team management.

For the 2nd Ashes Test match Australian team has now recalled its best bowler of the years Doug Bollinger. At the same time Australian team has also included Harris who is expert at getting reverse swing.

Bollinger has been lead bowler for Australia since his debut in international cricket. He always tests the batsmen under al sorts of conditions and gets wickets quickly too.
Now the people who need to be afraid are Johnson and Hiffenhaus because both of them did not leave any impact during the first test's 2nd innings against England.

Johnson has never been out of Australia's test team since his debut. According to Australian captain Mitchell did bowl with intensity and positivity in the test match but he could not fetch us wickets that are most important to get in order to win the test match. So we have made it sure that nobody is permanent in the team.

Moreover, everybody will be the part of the team by the time he performs well for Australia. Now Australia has decided to be strict in terms of performance so lets see which way the wind blows now.

Phil Jackson: Andre Martin Can Be Forgiven If He Comes Back And Plays For LA

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 11:27 AM PST

Coach of Los Angeles Lakers Mr. Phil Jackson is highly desperate to see his center Andrew Bynum back on the floor. He is so desperate to see him playing on the floor because his team is feeling his absence.

As a result of the absence of Andrew Bynum Los Angeles Lakers have lost two games on the trot. In this list the recent defeat against Indiana Pacers by 92-95 is also included. LA lost against Indiana Pacers on this Sunday at the Staples Center.

This defeat of Los Angeles Lakers was shocking for everybody as Indiana Pacers have never beaten LA Staples Center since 1999. The impact of the absence of Andrew Bynum on LA can be judged from the stipulation of his coach that he made about his absence even before the match.

This is not the only one dilemma that LA is going through these days. Rather players like Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom have to spend extra time on the floor. So far as Theo Ratiff is concerned to he is out of action owing to a knee Injury. On the other side Derrick Cracter is not ready to spend some extra time on the floor.

According to Phil Jackson we have to rely too much upon Lamar and Pau. But we are under compulsion because we do not have any other replacement for Andrew Martin. Moreover we do not have any other option too and that is the biggest problem for us. But there is one even bigger problem then this, says Jackson.

None of us know that when Andrew Maritn will be back. We all hope that he will come back by Thanksgiving.  Bynum participated in his first full contact workout since his operation on July 28th 2010. According to Bynum he will be back in action within three weeks but that is too late for his coach Jackson.

In this regard Jackson says that we are just waiting for him to come back with us at the moment. Once he will start practice with us then we will see whether is it a week or three weeks.

Right now we are just waiting for everything to get right for us. once Andrew Martin will be back then we will see what happens on the court and what happens in terms of his fitness.  The problem of the return of Andrew Martin has compounded even more because of the delay he caused in his surgery that was scheduled to take place on 18th of July. In addition to it he attended the World Cup too during the delay.  In this regard Jackson told to DLN reporters he will be forgiven if he comes back and play with vigor and same intensity for his team.   After the results of Saturday Jackson was looking inspired and he is hopeful about the come back of Andrew Martin within a week or two.

But soon all started turning into a massacre as rebels started shutting the hammers down in a dominant way. In addition to heavy padding also took place between the two teams. There was a reason behind this padding.

New Zealand, Duncan Fletcher, Jaipur, India, Mark GreatbatchA new team member is joining touring New Zealand team before the second one day international is played at Jaipur against India in the five ODI series. It is not a bowler of batsman who is coming from New Zealand to join the team, but former cricketer Duncan Fletcher who was also English team's coach at one time.

Fletcher is joining the team as a full time consultant for coaching as has been directed to him by New Zealand Cricket Board after appointing him there and instructing him to join his duties with immediate effect.

Fletcher will remain with the New Zealand team here till the end of this ongoing series of which the first ODI has been won by India by a margin of 40 runs.

Fletcher has also been captain of Zimbabwe cricket team earlier. The purpose of his appointment as being reported is to improve the synchronization and harmony within the New Zealand team along with the task of keeping environment fresh in and around the team.

He most probably would be landing in India on 30th November and straightaway will join hands with the main coach of New Zealand team, Mark Greathbatch.

New Zealand had a clean sweep defeat against Bangladesh by 0-4 in a five one day international match series held in Bangladesh.

Fletcher has a good past record clearly visible with the data about England's ICC test ranking drastically improved during his tenure. England team was at the bottom of ICC test ranking when Fletcher joined them as their coach and acting as a stimulus improved their position by taking them to number three position.

It was also a feather in his cap that English team recaptured the Urn in 2005 after a long period since 1986-87.

The Ashes: 2nd Test: Failed First Test Australian Bowlers Getting The Heat

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 09:52 AM PST

Ricky Ponting and all others in the Australian team will keep trying to forget England's second innings but may not succeed for long. In the first test match that has just concluded at Gabba Stadium in Brisbane, England won the toss and decided to bat first and got all out on the very first day at a total of 276 runs.

Australia in turn made a little short of 500 runs taking a lead of 220 plus.

It was England's second innings that stunned Australia and almost nullified the venom in Australian bowling. It appeared as if England were playing against some college team when they made 517 runs with only one wicket down.

Both the openers andFor the next test to be played at Adelaide starting this Friday, the second of the five test Ashes series, by including Doug Bollinger and Ryan Harris in the 13 member team of Australia, Ponting has given a clear cut indication to the not to impressive Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus to introspect themselves.

Even the debutant spin bowler for Australia Xavier Doherty who took two wickets in first innings could not product any results in the second innings.

It is Johnson who is going to feel the heat most as he did not get any wicket in the first test at Brisbane and that has happened for the first time in his long career. If Johnson is dropped from the second test on these grounds, that also will be happening in his career life span for the first time.

In fact question about Johnson's consistency in bowling was raised at the time of selection of 17 players for the first test when it was doubtful whether he will be picked or not.

The Ashes [Eng vs Aus 1st Test]: Cook And Trot Give Mighty Record Partnership To Draw First Test

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 12:47 AM PST

England, Australia, AshesEngland were in a very solid position at the closing of day four of the first test match of the Ashes 2010-11 started on Thursday at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Brisbane, Australia. England won the toss and decided to bat first but did not score well as the whole team got out on first day itself at a meagre score of 260 with the help of 76 by Ian Bell and 67 from Alistair Cook. Kevin Pietersen's 43 were also worthy for contributing to this total. Australia starting their first innings on day one itself in the last session made a hefty 481 with the help of 195 from Michael Hussey and 136 from Haddin.

For Australia the most successful bowler in crashing English batting was Siddle who took 6 wickets for 54 runs. For England the most successful bowler in Australian first innings batting was Finn who took 6 wickets for 125 runs.

England started their second innings in the last session of day three of the match with a backlog of 220 runs. Openers Strauss and Cook started in a perfect tone with a different set of mind. Probably the intention was to take the match to a drawn stage by passing through all difficult stages and change the resulting pattern of Gabba Stadium.

Both the batsmen gave a solid first wicket partnership of 188 runs before Strauss got stumped out by Haddin at the bowling of North but only after completing his century thereby getting out at 110 made in 224 balls with the help of 15 boundaries. England were 309 at the end of day four with their solo wicket down.

Trott and Cook started on day five at 54 and 132 respectively for England with nine wickets to go for the innings.

First Ashes test has witnessed a record partnership for England for their second wicket that of 329 between Cook and Trot. England have not only driven this test to drawn but also have put a psychological pressure in Australia right in the beginning of the five test series.

Cook has made his first double century that of 235 not out and Trott was at 135 not out when England declared their second innings at 517 runs with only one wicket down. England had overall lead of 296 runs for Australia to chase in their second innings but with only 40-odd overs left in the game.

The bad thing for Australia in their second innings was fall of Simon Katich in the seventh over of game when his score was only 4 and innings total was 5. Good thing that happened was Ricky Ponting made a half century that probably would help him to regain his form depending on how he moves ahead from here.

The first test of the five test series between England and Australia in the ongoing Ashes series 2010-11 was started on Thursday 25th November at Brisbance Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba (or in short popularly known as Gabba), Brisbane, Australia.

English captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and decided to bat first keeping some past experiences and facts about this ground. This ground mostly produces result. Bowling in last session would give an advantage on last day of the match on this ground.

England couldn't produce a huge score in their first innings and first innings of the series too. It was only Cook and Bell who made some good score with their individual half centuries. They made 67 and 76 respectively.

Another considerable score producer was Kevin Pietersen who made 43. England were all out at 260 in the first day itself with some hours left for Australia to play.

Australia played fantastically in their first innings batting and produced a huge score of 481 with a brilliant 195 by Hussey and 136 by Haddin. England was left with one hour of play in their second innings on Day 3.

Openers Strauss and Cook played safely and cautiously to ensure no loss of wicket with England on 19 for no loss.

The overnight not out pair of last evening started on day 4 with Strauss at 11 and Cook at 6. The duo gave a magnificent partnership of 188 runs between them before Australia could get the wicket of Strauss just after the post lunch drink break.

Strauss was stumped by Haddin bowled by North at his score of 110 runs with 15 fours. Trott joined Cook to carry on the stride for England. Strauss completed his century after lunch while Cook completed his after during the post tea session.

Both the batsmen Cook and Trott decided to play on and not to lose any wicket further for the day. Trott was not out on crease at 54 and Cook at 132 to carry on the fete on fifth day of the match.

England is leading by 99 runs with 9 wickets in hand but the match would be heading for a draw as England will take some time and build some considerable score to draw their second innings and invite Australia for batting in their second innings, if at all England decided upon that.

Asian Games 2010: Vijender Leads Indian Boxers To Best Ever Performance

Posted: 26 Nov 2010 09:41 AM PST

Vijender Singh is ranked number one in world boxer's 75 kg category. A second gold medal has been grabbed by him for India in the ongoing sixteenth Asian Games being held in Zhengzhou, China.

Vijender is already Olympic and World Championship medals holder. He got a bronze medal in world championship.

On Friday Vijender's fight was with world champion Abbos Atoev from Uzbekistan to be held at Foshan Gymnasium in Zhengzhou.

Without giving Atoev a single chance to get a point, Vijender defeated Uzbek boxer with a clean sweep 7-0 score in men's 75 kg boxing event final.

That was a reply to Atoev by Vijender for the defeat in World championship semi finals in 2009.

Probably Vijender learnt a good lesson from that defeat and gave him a better revenging defeat.

Another boxer from India V. Santhosh Kumar won a silver medal in men's 64 kg boxing event whereas Manpreet Singh achieved the same feat in men's 91 kg boxing event.

Both of them could not defeat their respective opponent and thereby satisfying with silver.

Santhosh lost by a huge margin of 1-16 to Daniyar Yeleussinov of Kazakhstan. Manpreet was defeated by Syrian boxer Mohammad Ghossoun.

This was the third silver medal for India in boxing after the first got by Dinesh Kumar on Thursday in the same Gymnasium in men's boxing 81 kg category.

Earlier on Thursday another Indian boxer Vikas Krishnan in men's boxing category got gold for India. Finally India has got two gold, three silver and two bronze medals in boxing events.

This is the best ever performance by Indian pugilists earlier being in 1984 Asian Games held in Seoul when they collected four silver and five bronze medals.

Asian games 2010: Bangladesh’s First Gold: Afghanistan Bowled Over

Posted: 26 Nov 2010 09:27 AM PST

Bangladesh bagged its first ever gold medal in the history of Asian games in cricket. Afghanistan, however, was not so lucky this time.

Bangladesh team captain Mohammad Ashraful and his team of eleven took eight Afghan wickets and won by a margin of five wickets.

The Afghan's victory against Pakistan made them a formidable team. In this match the Afghan team won the toss; however, their performance was abysmal with their total score of one hundred and eighteen for eight wickets.

Though Bangladesh's score as of the sixteenth over was seventy five for five wickets, it was Naeem Islam and Mohammad Shabbir who changed the course of Bangladeshi destiny with their exquisite forty-four run partnership.

Despite being in a tight spot when nineteen runs were needed of twelve balls, Shabbirs 33 runs out of 18 wickets were enough to smash the Afghan attempts to thwart them.

This is definitely a sad turn of events for Afghanistan especially after their non-qualification for the 2011 World Cup, Afghanistan being a non-test playing nation.

A change in attitude was visible of the bronzed Pakistani's lead by Khalid Latif who was victorious against Sri Lanka after they lost to Afghanistan. Despite all wins and losses Bangladesh's gold is one which is definitely commendable.

The Gordon and Griffin duo outdid themselves at this game especially Griffin's ninth double-double was a marvelous feat for his career and the Clippers.

Alinghi shall not participate in the 34th American Cup

Posted: 26 Nov 2010 03:03 AM PST

The 34th American Cup Championship to be held in 2013 is going to have one participant less.

Alinghi of Switzerland has withdrawn from participating in the American Cup and shall not return again for any event.

Further, this in this championship the America cup shall not have the race which usually is to depart from the locations of San Francisco or Italy.

Without specifying any conditions as such Alinghi stated that it was not going to participate in the event as the present conditions will not be idle for its participation taking hint at the protocol and also the initiatives which have been undertaken by the American Defender and its Challenger of record.

To make this declaration more formal Paco Latorre who is also the spokesperson for Alinghi made a statement. However, instead of quoting reasons Latorre dwelled upon Alinghi's bright past wherein he talked about the owner of Alinghi, that is, Ernesto Bertarelli who has had victory for two year with four year intervals, that is, in New Zealand in the year 2003 and in Spain in the year 2007 respectively. Despite this victory Alinghi suffered painful defeat at San Francisco at the BMW Oracle Racing in the 33rd America's Cup. Prior to this racing there was an ongoing onslaught between Bertarelli and Larry Ellison who also happens to be the Oracle's financer.

On pestering them for the reasons for this withdrawal there was a perpetual no comment stance by Latorre.

Asiad 2010: China versus South Korea: Asian Games Volleyball Finals

Posted: 26 Nov 2010 02:17 AM PST

Asian Games Volleyball FinalsSouth Korea and China will be facing each other again for the women volleyball championship on Saturday. This year, the Asian games volleyball finals are to be held at Guangzhou in China.

This performance of China is a definitely breath of fresh air and recovery as compared to their alarmingly below average stint in the FIVB World Championship for women which was held last month.

The scores this time speak for themselves about the recovery made by China this year. China beat Tajikistan with a brilliant victory of three to zero and a similar victory against Mongolia though Thailand had a bit of luck lost by two points as opposed to losing on duck. However, China met its competition in the form of South Korea where they had a neck to neck but though they beat South Korea by a point.

As of right now China leads with a no loss victory.

South Korea has had a similar victory against Thailand, Mongolia and Tajikistan beating all the teams with a three to zero victory. However, right from the knockout rounds China seems to be the leading undefeated pack.

First came Taipei in the quarters and then North Korea both sustaining a loss of three to zero to China.

Whereas, South Korea paved its way to the championship beginning with knocking out Japan and then Kazakhstan with a similar three to zero victory.

It can be said that the Chinese and the South Koreans have made one of the best rivalries with respect to sports, historically at the Asian games.

[Asiad Hockey] Pakistan’s Historic Win

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 04:23 AM PST

After 20 years, Pakistan took away the gold, with a convincing win of 2-0, with Malaysia on Thursday at the Asian Games men’s hockey.

Pakistan   lacked a win in Beijing in the year 1990, and had their first major win at the Sidney world cup in 1994.

In the Commonwealth Games that took place in October, they landed in a humiliating position of 12th place out of 12. The Pakistanis, kneeled in prayers after winning and lifted their Dutch coach Michel van den Heuvel over their shoulders.

The Malaysians settled for silver. The Malaysians had won against India in the semifinals. They had their heads shaved to ward off evil spirits.  The Malaysians with four wins and one draw had reached the finals.

In the intervening time, India returned to the Asians games podium by defeating South Korea 1-0 and won a bronze medal. The Indian players argued with the Pakistani umpire Haider Rasool, for the penalty corner in the second half.

Jose Brasa, India’s Spanish coach said that "the bronze was not just a reward for his team" and he would be getting his contracts renewed. He also said that he was happy for the boys as they won't be returning empty handed, after winning five of the six matches played.

The Indian team which won four of the league matches lost its match against the Malaysian golden goal in the semifinal.

The women's Kabaddi team also was not far behind later in the day when they defeated Iran women team by a close margin of 23-22 in Asian Games 2010 being played at Guangzhou, China.

The women's Kabaddi semi final match between India and Iran went into a very interesting mode when it was tied at 22-22 at the closing time thereby drifting it to extra time.

A solo point taken by the Indian team in that extra time gave them an edge over Iran team and carved their way to the finals.

Both the Indian Kabaddi teams – men and women – have ensured at least a silver medal each for India in the finals respectively. And both the teams are favourites as of now to grab the gold in their respective games.

Indian men's Kabaddi team will meet Iran's team in the finals to be played on Friday. Iran team had earlier defeated Pakistan's strong team surprising them by a sleek margin of 17-16.

That way losing semi finalists Japan and Pakistan have got bronze medal each. Since the inception of Asian Games starting in 1990 at Beijing, Indian men's Kabaddi team has a marvellous record of winning five gold medals so far.

If they win a gold on Friday against Iran in the finals, it will be their sixth one, a record in its own. It is the first time women's Kabaddi team from India is participating in Asian Games.

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 03:20 AM PST

Rajiv Tomar and Nirmala Devi were ousted from their categories in the wrestling tournament of the Asian Games held this Thursday.

However, doing the country proud was Indian wrestler Mausam Khatri, who won the bronze in the men's freestyle wrestling 96 kg category.

In order to get India its third bronze in wrestling, Mausam Khatri defeated Jaegang Kim of South Korea in a 3-1 tussle.

The winning streak had commenced by defeating Syrian wrestler Alkarrad Raja 3-1 in the repechage round.

The Indian wrestler landed in the repechage round by tasting defeat 1-3 at the hands of Taimuraz Tigiyev of Kazakhstan.

The other Indian wrestlers were shown the door in the earlier rounds itself.
In the 120 kg freestyle pre quarterfinals, Rajeev Tomar had faced defeat 1-3 against Aiyaal Lazarev of Krygystan.

In the 48 kg women's pre quarter finals, Nirmala Devi, winner of the silver medal at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, could not weave the similar magic and lost 1-3 to Zhuldyz Eshimova.

Talking about the Greco Roman category, settling for bronze again are Indian wrestlers Ravinder Singh weighing 60 kg and Sunil Kumar weighing 66 kg.
In order to elevate its position up the ladder, India needs a gold count increase at the earliest and settling for bronze is not enough.

Afghanistan Skipper Mohammed Nabi was visibly elated and called this feat: " A big win ".Pakistan's solid start of hitting 30 runs in the first 3 overs was discouraging for the Afghan players.

Sharjeel Khan started off on a great note by costing Sahpur Zadran an expensive 12 run over before he fell prey to Mirwais Ashraf.

Afghanistan made a come- back in the game by grabbing wickets in the middle innings, after which ensued a verbal tiff between Pakistan captain Khalid Latif and Afghanistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad, which needed the mediation of Umpires at the end.

Afghanistan coach, Rashid Latif was very happy with the "fitness level "of his players, but would like to hold onto the celebrations until the gold medal is in his kitty.

Pakistani skipper attributed their loss to a number of missed run outs.Friday's final will witness Afghanistan at loggerheads with either Bangladesh or Sri Lanka.

The return of Wayne Rooney after the ripple creating controversy surrounding his personal life as well as attachment to the club , witnessed Manchester United earn a place in the last 16 of the Champions League , in the 1-0 win over the Rangers at Ibrox on Wednesday.

Valencia's feat over Buraspor forces them to settle for the Europa League.
Rooney made full use of the opportunity presented to him by Naismith's foul on Fabio, hence winning their fourth match in a row.

Rangers played a 5-4-1 formation on account of a series of injuries to the first team players.

Steven Davis was seen in a right back position which got him into a tussle with Berbatov , which referee Massimo Bucassa chose to dispense with.

The Englishmen faced trouble dealing with Richard Foster's ball into the box, which however , was ultimately saved by Van der Sar.

Clinching the night's glory was Rooney's header in the 87th minute as a saving grace to his off-field problems this season.

Rooney has been subjected to comments of " Coleen may forgive you , but the fans will not".

Signing of the five year contract with the club may have garnered back some of the lost respect for Rooney but there is still a long way to go for him to become the fan's man again.
