Clutch Goal By Alex Morgan Lifts US Women Over Italy In World Cup Qualifier Posted: 21 Nov 2010 02:19 PM PST Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor Padua, Italy (AHN) – Alex Morgan is a new hero for U.S. women’s soccer. Answering the call, Morgan sent a blast home in stoppage time to lift the Americans to a 1-0 win over Italy in a Women’s World Cup qualifying playoff match Saturday. Morgan, who had U.S. fans’ blood pumping and screaming at their television sets, rescued her team 90 minutes into the nerve-wracking away match. A scoreless tie could have given the Italians the edge going into Chicago Thanksgiving weekend when the sides square off again. Morgan was an 85th minute sub–the youngest on the roster at 21–and her goal in the fourth minute in stoppage time saved the American team. Morgan is no stranger to international goals, and bailing out her team. She forced a 1-1 tie on home soil last month against China. Although the Americans had ample opportunity with the ball–Italian goalkeeper Anna Picarelli was a staunch force at the net and they could not get a sure shot along with the hosts defenders. In the end it was the Americans, pretty sweet as injured goalkeeper Hope Solo and ex-defender Kate Markgraf said via Twitter. “Clutch-lex Morgan does it again,” she wrote on her Twitter account. “I’m so getting an Alex [Morgan] jersey,” Markgraf said. Veteran Solo chimed in: “My heart rate must be over 200! I don’t need a workout today! Alex scores and I find myself jumping on my bed screaming! I love [you] guys!” Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Dantonio Credits Michigan State`s Toughness; Purdue Nearly `Spoilermakers` Posted: 21 Nov 2010 02:19 PM PST John Raffel – AHN Sports Correspondent East Lansing, MI, United States (AHN) – Purdue almost became the Spoilermakers. But Michigan State’s punt blocking skills spoiled the Boilermakers’ hopes for a major college football upset Saturday. Quarterback Kirk Cousins’ 3-yard TD run following a blocked punt lifted No. 11-ranked Michigan State over Purdue 35-31 at Spartan Stadium. Cousins was 28-of-37 for 276 yards and three touchdowns to lead MSU to the comeback victory and keep the Spartans in a share of first place in the Big Ten. “It was an outstanding job by our football team hanging in,” said MSU coach Mark Dantonio. “I think Purdue came ready to play, obviously. We didn’t play our best football, but we just kept playing. We knew we needed to catch fire emotionally, and we finally did in the fourth quarter, with about 8:56 to go (on the clock).” MSU trailed by 15 going into the final 15 minutes. “You have to fight off any thoughts you have and it gets hard especially when you are down by 15,” said MSU senior linebacker Jon Misch. “It’s agonizing. It’s right in your face. Our team showed a lot of maturity to be able to take it and say we are not going to let this happen. We are going to stick our foot in the ground and we are going to end up making plays right now. I am obviously so happy that we did.” Enjoying a surprising 21-13 lead at halftime, the Boilermakers kept the pressure on with an 11-play scoring drive which hit paydirt on quarterback Rob Henry’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Cortez Smith in the third quarter for a 28-13 lead. Early in the fourth quarter, Cousins threw a 5-yard scoring pass to B.J. Cunningham to cut the Purdue lead to 28-20. But two minutes later, Carson Wiggs booted a 52-yard field goal for Purdue to make it an 11-point game. MSU came back with a 9-yard pass from Cousins to Mark Dell for a touchdown and Dell scored the two-point conversion to make it a three-point game with less than seven minutes to play. Denicos Allen blocked a Purdue punt attempt and MSU recovered on the Boilermaker 3. The Spartans gained the lead 35-31 on Cousins’ 3-yard touchdown run. “It’s hard to tell with that many people lined up on the line of scrimmage of the gaps,” said Purdue coach Danny Hope. “We will have to look at the film. It does not really matter where the breakdown came from; it was the difference maker of the game.” “We weren’t really sending more, guys were just getting close,” Dantonio said. “For whatever reason, whether it was the blocking or whether it was the timing. Denicos got a great jump on the ball on that last one, came off the edge unblocked and put his hand right on the football, just like you were supposed to.” “The ball stopped dead on the 3-yard line, and didn’t go out of the end zone for a safety, which I thought was big. We were then able to get in.” Keith Carlos rushed for 99 yards including an 80-yard touchdown run to spark Purdue to the 21-13 halftime lead. Michigan State entered the game at 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten, tied for first place with Ohio State and Wisconsin. While MSU improves to 10-1 and 6-1, Purdue falls to 4-7 and 2-5. “I think they played awfully well for the majority of the season, I am really proud of our football team,” said Hope. “We started the season off with a lot of question marks. We lost both of our top players right in a row, really proud of our football team. It was a great game today; very disappointed we did not win. It was a heartbreaking loss, but it is fun playing Boilermaker football.” “With the bye week that we had it was a good benefit to us because we got to go in and watch film and really get a feel for what Purdue was trying to do,” said MSU sophomore defensive tackle. “Jerel Worthy.” It was just good preparation. We wanted to know what was coming. They made us study hard.” “Kevin Pickelman got a big hit late in the fourth quarter and guys were pretty excited. It was good preparation. Two big plays ignited the Boilermakers in the first half. Cousins threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Dell to give MSU a 7-0 advantage early in the first quarter. But then Purdue ran off 14 uncontested points. Carlos stormed 80 yards for a Purdue touchdown to tie the game. Later in the quarter, Ricardo Allen intercepted a Cousins pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown and 14-7 Purdue lead, stunning the Spartan Stadium crowd. In the second quarter for Michigan State, Edwin Baker had a 19-yard touchdown run. But Dan Conroy’s PAT try failed and Purdue maintained a one-point lead. Purdue scored with nine seconds left in the second quarter on a 8-yard pass from Rob Henry to Antavian Edison for a eight-point advantage at the half. Michigan State had a 381-378 edge in total yards. Dell caught eight passes for 108 yards. Baker gained 90 yards rushing. Michigan State offensive coordinator Don Treadwell praised Cousins for battling through ankle and shoulder injuries. “I think before you get to your technical abilities and those types of things, there’s a will to win,” Treadwell said. “That’s why he’s one of the unanimous captains of the football team as an underclassman. He brings that energy not just to the offense, but to the entire team. You can’t put a price tag on those things; you don’t coach those things up…What he brings to the table is tremendous and it affects the whole team. “ For Wisconsin, Henry was 16 of 26 in passing for 189 yards. Carlos had 103 rushing yards. The Spartans play at Penn State next Saturday to end the regular season. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |

Bruins` Savard OK With Colin Campbell`s Criticism Posted: 21 Nov 2010 02:19 PM PST Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard joined his team at practice Saturday after recetnyl suffering with post-concussion syndrome. He also shrugged off NHL vice president Colin Campbell’s e-mails written three years ago citing Savard as “a little fake artist.” Savard said he was not bothered by the e-mails that recently came to light, because they were issued before Campbell ruled last season on Matt Cooke’s hit that left Savard with a Grade 2 concussion in a March game vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins. Savard was not taken to a hospital after the hit to his head. “I have nothing against Colie,” Savard told the website. “I think that stuff was private stuff, and I think that stuff that he was saying got interpreted in a bad way. It had nothing to do with the Cooke incident.” Savard, 33, was under Campbell’s direction with the Rangers last decade and Savard’s playing style was encouraged. “I just knew he was talking about when I dove a couple of times when I played for him to draw penalties,” he said. “I’ve obviously changed because I play every night, but back then I was in and out of the lineup, so that was one of my bonuses, drawing two or three penalties a game and getting on the power play.
