Wisconsin Comes Alive After Intermission, Pound Purdue

West Lafayette, IN, United States (AHN) – The Wisconsin Badgers’ bid for a BCS bowl is alive, but just barely.

The seventh ranked team in the country survived a scare in West Lafayette against Purdue, pulling out a 34-13 win.

The Boilermakers got on the scoreboard first on a 23-yard pass from Sean Robinson to Antavian Edison.

“It was just a little quick pass out to me. I read my blocks. I had a couple guys come out and make some key blocks and just tried my hardest to get into the end zone,” said Edison.

Robinson, who became the first true freshman to start for Purdue since 2002, was 19-38 for 141 yards.

Edison finished with a career high six catches for 73 yards.

The Boilermakers had a chance to extend the 7-0 lead but Edison fumbled at the Wisconsin 25-yard line early in the second quarter.

Antonio Fenelus scooped the ball up and returned it 48 yards to the Purdue 27, which set up a 44-yard field goal by Philip Welch.

“I am not really worried about the fumble,” said Edison. “My team kept me up after that, too. They made sure I kept my head in the game and I just forgot about it.”

Welch added a 37-yarder late in quarter, but Purdue took a 10-6 lead into halftime.

After the break the Badgers awoke, especially on defense.

Culmer St. Jean intercepted Robinson on Purdue’s first drive of the third quarter.

Five plays later, Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien connected with Jared Abbrederis for a seven-yard touchdown to give the Badgers their first lead of the game.

“I stared my receiver down. I lost the linebacker on the inside and he followed right where I was looking and I threw it right into him,” said Robinson. “[I] should have gotten it out of my hands earlier and shouldn’t have stared him down like I did.”

Robinson was picked off three times in the second half, including a 36-yard touchdown return by Fenelus in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

The Boilermakers scored just three points over the final two quarters and their defense, which held Wisconsin to 43 yards rushing in the first half, surrendered 130 over the final two quarters.

Montee Ball led the surge. The sophomore finished with 127-yards on 21 carries and two scores.

The Badgers return home to Madison next week to face Indiana, who came up just short of upsetting 16th ranked Iowa.

The Boilers need to win two out of their next three games to become bowl eligible. Edison said he believes they will play in the postseason.

“I don’t see us not making a bowl,” he said. “I’m feel that we are going to make a bowl because I am confident in my team.”

The Boilers (4-5) will try to get one game closer to achieving that goal when they host Michigan next week.

Michigan State Bounces Back With Big Win Over Minnesota

East Lansing, MI, United States (AHN) – Back in the Big Ten Conference title race.

That’s what had Michigan State football coach Mark Antonio smiling Saturday after his 15th-ranked Spartans knocked off Minnesota 31-8 at Spartan Stadium.

Edwin Baker scored four touchdown runs including three in the first half to lead the Spartans who were coming off their first loss of the season last weekend, a 37-6 shellacking vs. Iowa.

Michigan State is 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten. Minnesota is 1-9 and 0-6.

“It was a big win for the program,” Dantonio said. “It’s very exciting for the program. It’s the second time in three years we’ve won nine games. Credit Minnesota, I thought they played hard. Anytime you have a program in transition, to play every single week is a credit to your coaching staff.”

Baker had a 30-yard run midway in the first quarter. In the second quarter, he scored from a yard out with 6:03 to play. On the last play of the half, he also scored on a 1-yard run for a 21-0 lead.

In the first half, Baker had 118 yards on 14 carries. He ended up with 179 yards for the game.

Dan Conroy booted a 24-yard field goal for MSU in the third quarter. Minnesota got on the board early in the fourth on a 9-yard pass from Adam Weber to MarQueis Gray.

Weber also passed for the two points. The Spartans responded with another scoring drive with Baker again scoring from a yard out.

“This is just one, we need to go 3-0 in November, that’s our benchmark,” said Dantonio, whose team has a bye week and finishes the month with Purdue and Penn State.

“The norm is starting to be that we’re going to be a bowl team every year. It’s the fourth straight time we’re going to a bowl game. Minnesota beat us last year. The difference between winning and losing out there is not that big. I didn’t feel it was a 31-8 game. They played us tough.”

Michigan State had the edge in total yards with 320-267. Kirk Cousins completed 9-of-20 for 131 yards.

Baker had all but 10 of MSU’s 189 rushing yards. B.J. Cunningham caught four passes for 40 yards.

Adam Weber was 15-of-22 for Minnesota for 167 yards including seven to Duane Bennett for 57 yards.

“We had as good of a week of practice as we could have,” MSU quarterback Kirk Cousins said. “We had the kind of preparation we needed to. Our focus came back to where it needed to be. It was always there. We just laid an egg against Iowa, that’s the botttom line.”

Minnesota only netted 76 yards rushing.

Cousins said the Spartans are looking forward to the off week.

“We’ll get the rest we need,” he said. “This week off will help.”

Done At 19-1: Zenyatta Can`t Cap Perfect Career; Falls To Blame At Breeders

Louisville, KY, United States (AHN) – Zenyatta couldn’t quite make up a gap from last to first, finishing second to Blame at Saturday’s $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs.

It marked the 6-year-old’s final career race and left Zenyatta at 19-1, not quite the storybook ending most expected.

Blame enjoyed a steadier race, moving to the front in the middle of the stretch run then holding off Zenyatta’s furious comeback bid from dead last.

Blame, 4, finished the 1 1-4 mile race in 2:02.28 and paid off for winners at 5:1.

Fly Down was third and Preakness Champ Lookin At Lucky was fourth.

Michael Allen`s Record 61 Forges One-Shot Lead At Schwab Cup

San Francisco, CA, United States (AHN) – Michael Allen grew up playing golf at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Saturday he played like he owns Harding Park.

Allen went roaring down the birdie super highway Saturday on his way to a tournament record 10-under par 61 and leads the Charles Schwab Cup championship by a shot over John Cook.

Allen, who plays both the Champions and PGA Tour had a flawless day. He hit 17 of 18 greens and missed only one fairway, 10 birdies, no bogeys.

“This is by far the best round I’ve ever shot,” Allen said after he went shooting up the leaderboard. “I never finished off my rounds the first couple of days. I was inside eight to 10 feet a lot and I made those,” he said as he used only 26 putts for his record round.

His 54-hole total is 199, 14-under par.

He will play the final round with John Cook and David Frost. Cook shot 67 and it could have been much better. Cook missed from 10 feet at the final hole in his effort to tie Allen. He also missed from eight feet at the 15th for birdie.

“I just need to keep doing what I’m doing,” said Cook as he looked forward to the final round. “I gave myself enough opportunities today. I just didn’t cash in.”

Frost closed with a bogey at the final hole but still shot 65 and is alone at 12-under, 201.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” Frost said as he talked about Allen’s record 61. “He grew up here and he knows this golf course.”

The terrific play by Allen, Cook and Frost moved the Bernhard Langer-Freddie Couples story to the back page.

Langer is still in the hunt for the tournament. He shot a 67 and is at 10-under par 203 with Russ Cochran and Tom Lehman.

It appears that Langer was in excellent shape to win his first-ever overall Schwab points championship and probably put himself in position for Player of the Year honors.

Couples fell nine shots off Allen’s lead. He finished with a 70 and a five-under par 208 total and saw his hopes of winning all but vanish.

Edwards Wins Texas Nationwide Race, Keselowski Wins Title

Posted: 07 Nov 2010 03:47 PM PST

Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Fort Worth, TX, United States (AHN) – Carl Edwards won the battle but Brad Keselowski officially won the war.

Thanks to a restart with two laps to go, Carl Edwards won Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway, but it was Keselowski who wrapped up the NASCAR Nationwide title.

Kyle Busch ran second and Edwards celebrated his third win of the season, but it was third-place finishing Brad Keselowski who handed team owner Roger Pesske his first NASCAR title.

Busch claimed Edwards’ jump of the final restart gave Edwards the win.

“They [Carl Edwards] got better adjustments or something, but they got a lot of speed out of their car towards the middle and end of the race. That’s not what lost it,” said Busch. “The restart there, Carl [Edwards] jumped the restart. NASCAR never wants to be the outcome of the race, but yet every other week they are. It doesn’t surprise me that they aren’t this week.”

Keselowski leads Edwards by an insurmountable 465 points with two races left in the season and could park the ride for the rest of the year and still win the title if he chose to.

Joey Logano finished fourth and was followed by Martin Truex Jr.
