St. Petersburg, FL, United States (AHN) – New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson received terrible news during the weekend in learning his 87-year-old father, John Alderson, died due to injuries from being struck by a motor vehicle in St. Petersburg, FL.

Alderson, a former U.S Air Force pilot, died at 12:39 p.m. Saturday at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

According to police reports, Alderson got bumped by a jeep while walking across the street at the 3600 block of 4th St. North in St. Petersburg.

Police added they already indentified the jeep’s driver, a 21-year-old man, but charges have not been filed.

Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon extended his condolences to Alderson and his family for the sad development.

“We’ve asked Sandy to take whatever time he needs as it relates to this terrible personal loss,” Wilpon said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the Aldersons at this difficult time.”

Alderson, recently hired as Mets new GM, called his father’s death a devastating blow.

“Our entire family is devastated by his loss. He was a beloved father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by all of us,” Sandy Alderson said in a statement.

John Alderson reportedly conducted a total of 182 missions (32 in World War II and 150 in the Vietnam War), piloting a B-24 “Liberator.”

Spokane, WA, United States (AHN) – Steven Gray, coming off a sterling performance from Friday’s season-opener, logged a game-best 17 points in the Gonzaga Bulldogs’ 86-56 thrashing of the IUPUI Jaguars Sunday at McCarthey Athletic Center.

The 6-foot-5, 208-pound senior guard unloaded 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc, in the Bulldogs’ 117-72 demolition of Southern Friday.

Gray also dished out nine assists and had seven boards in the lopsided season-opener victory.

On Sunday, Gray once again paced the Bulldogs’ offense, but also made his presence felt defensively by hauling in eight boards and registering four steals and one shot blocked in 34 minutes of play.

The Bulldogs, who lost some depth from last season’s squad, including the team’s top scorer in Matt Bouldin, also got ample support from seven-footers junior Robert Sacre and freshman Kelly Olynyk Sunday.

Olynyk scored 13 points off the bench, while Sacre chipped in 11 points for Gonzaga (2-0), which shot a staggering 60 percent overall and made 5-of-18 from behind the arc for 27.8 percent.

The Bulldogs also dominated the battle off the glass, 36-25, and had 13 more assists than IUPUI’s total of three helpers.

The Jaguars (0-1) were paced by the Summit League’s top returning scorer Alex Young, who scored 16 points. Leroy Nobles added 14 points and five boards in the loss.

‘Skins, Quarterback McNabb Agree On Five-Year Pact Extension

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 04:18 PM PST

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Landover, MD, United States (AHN) – After being benched in the final minutes of a Week 8 game in Detroit, Donovan McNabb and the Washington Redskins have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension through 2015.

According to multiple reports, the extension deal with the 33-year-old McNabb, acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles before the season, is worth $78 million.

His current pact with the Redskins was set to expire after this season.

A report by the Washington Post.com indicated McNabb’s agent, Fletcher N. Smith III, confirmed the new deal.

The agreement comes just two weeks after coach Mike Shanahan yanked the Pro Bowl quarterback in favor of backup Rex Grossman in the final minutes of a 37-25 loss to the Detroit Lions.

The Redskins trailed just 31-25 when McNabb was benched by Shanahan, who cited that the six-time Pro Bowler did not have a grasp of the team’s two-minute offense.

After indicating that the benching was the best alternative in winning that contest, Shanahan later reportedly cited stamina issues as well as leg injuries for pulling McNabb.

Despite being in the midst of one of his worst statistical seasons, McNabb stands to earn a reported $40 million guaranteed from the new deal.

He is on pace to throw more interceptions than he has in any other season of his career, and the fewest touchdown passes since 1999.

McNabb has thrown eight interceptions in 2010, compared to just seven TD.

McNabb has thrown a pick in six consecutive games, and has thrown two passes to the opposing team in his last three tilts.

Apart from avoiding throwing more interceptions, McNabb will also have to address a low completion rate this year, his poorest since 2006.

The Redskins are set to clash against McNabb’s old team the Philadelphia Eagles Monday night.

McNabb, acquired in the offseason in exchanged for draft picks, spent his first 11 seasons with the Eagles.

Childress: No MRI For Favre`s Ailing Shoulder, Quarterback To Play Vs. Packers

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 04:18 PM PST

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Eden Prairie, MN, United States (AHN) – Brett Favre, who struggled in the Vikings’ most recent setback at Chicago Sunday, is dealing with a right shoulder problem, but the injury will not reportedly require an MRI.

Favre, who threw for 170 yards against the Bears in Week 10 after going for a career-best 446 the previous week against Arizona, experienced pain in his throwing shoulder Saturday, according to reports.

The pain in that shoulder could be attributed to surgery the legendary quarterback had to address a partially torn biceps tendon in the spring of 2009, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Vikings coach Brad Childress indicated Monday that Favre is ‘sore” but he believes the 41-year-old signal-caller anticipates practicing Thursday in preparation for their showdown against Green Bay Sunday.

Favre, who has dealt with a myriad of injuries for this season alone, is reportedly no longer practicing Wednesdays because the Vikings want to provide him an added day off each week.

Apart from the latest shoulder issue, the 11-time Pro Bowler and six-time All-Pro has suffered a stress fracture in his left ankle, a fracture in his left hand, a calf problem, tendinitis in his right elbow and a cut on his chin this season.

Childress added that no MRI was expected on the shoulder ailment, which Favre indicated to ESPN.com Monday as “no big deal – - right now.”

Against the Bears, Favre was 18-of-31 through the air with three interceptions and a lost fumble for the Vikings (3-6), who are struggling in their playoff chase following Sunday’s 27-13 loss.

The Vikings’ season could depend on the outcome of next Sunday’s game against the Packers (6-3), who are fresh off a bye week.

Austin Freeman Nets 23 Points As Georgetown Holds Off Tulane

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Austin Freeman poured in a game-best 23 points and hit 4-of-7 from behind the arc, as the Georgetown Hoyas topped the Tulane Green Wave 69-53 Monday night at the Verizon Center.

Jason Clark added 17 points and seven boards, while Vee Sanford provided 10 points off the bench for the Hoyas (2-0), who were coming off a 62-59 decision in their season opener at Old Dominion Friday.

John Thompson III’s wards compiled a 23-11 mark, including a 10-8 mark in the Big East, last season. But the Hoyas were stunned by Ohio University in the NCAA Tournament.

The Green Wave (1-1), who opened their season with a 91-62 trouncing of Maryland-Eastern Shore Friday, were paced by Kris Richard, who logged a team-high 22 points to go along with nine boards.

Jordan Callahan added nine points, while Kendall Timmons donated eight markers and nine boards in defeat.

The Hoyas shot 48 percent from the floor, including 12-of-29 from the 3-point range (41.4 percent), while Tulane was held to a 35.8 shooting clip after pummeling UMES with a 50.8 percent shooting in the season opener.

Monday night’s tilt marked the second-ever meeting between the schools. Georgetown dominated Tulane 74-58 in last season’s curtain raiser.
