South Florida Extends Basketball Coach Heath’s Contract Posted: 07 Jul 2010 12:06 PM PDT Tampa, FL, United States (AHN) – South Florida appears upbeat for more promising basketball seasons with the re-signing of head coach Stan Heath, the school announced Tuesday. South Florida rewarded Heath with a five-year extension deal after the Bulls carded a solid 20-13 overall record in a highly competitive Big East last season. In three seasons with the Bulls, Heath compiled a 41-45 record (.431 winning percentage) and more importantly guided them to consistent progress each season. The extension provides Heath a 33 percent increase salary (around $900,000 base salary in five years ) and the chance to develop a strong basketball program at South Florida. South Florida hopes its renewed commitment with Heath will eventually lead to an NCAA tournament appearance. The 45-year old Heath led Kent State to an Elite Eight stint in his first head coaching season and later guided Arkansas to two straight NCAA tournament appearances. Heath also said he envisions a team patterned to recently deceased legend John Wooden's philosophy. "It still comes down to the basics for me, which is getting a player, developing him and building a team," Heath told Bradenton.com Tuesday. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Georgia Names Crumley Interim AD Posted: 07 Jul 2010 12:05 PM PDT Athens, GA, United States (AHN) – The University of Georgia named an interim athletic director Tuesday, appointing former executive associate AD for finance and administration Frank Crumley to the post. Michael Adams, the president of University of Georgia, assigned Crumley as the school's interim athletic director. Georgia's decision to appoint Crumley as interim athletic director came after Damon Evans was nabbed for alleged DUI charges on June 30 and eventually resigned from the post. Crumley is expected to assume responsibility in the athletic department for 6 to 12 months until a search committee finds a candidate for the long-term post. Adams said the search committee is headed up by UGA law professor and faculty athletics representative David Shipley. Although Adams hasn't ruled out the possibility of hiring Crumley for the post, he insisted the priority remains to look for candidates outside the university. "I think we have three or four people currently on the staff who are very, very strong people," Adams told AJC.com Tuesday "But my first look in this case is going to be outside." Since 1991, Crumley has assumed several roles in the school's athletic administration, including chief executive office during Evans tenure. Crumley will head one of the top spending athletic programs in the nation, according to a recent report. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Reports: Wade Stays With Heat, Bosh To Join Him Posted: 07 Jul 2010 12:03 PM PDT Miami, FL, United States (AHN) – The Miami Heat were the big winners of free agency Wednesday, as not only has guard Dwyane Wade reportedly decided to return to the team, but forward Chris Bosh will join him in South Florida. The Heat keep their star guard in Wade, and add a top forward as well in the ex-Raptors star. The relief in Miami is palpable as fans tried to woo Wade at the airport Monday and at his basketball camp Tuesday. Their love apparently paid off and Wade helped bring another present along in Bosh, as the pair reportedly traded notes recently about where they might play in 2010-11. The duo immediately make the Heat more competitive in the East with the aging Celtics as Wade and Bosh combined to average 50 points, 16 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks per game in 2009-10. The combination of their skills propels Miami’s talent ahead of several teams in the East, as the NBA awaits LeBron James’ decision Thursday on where he will play. If the Heat win the LeBron sweepstakes, the Heat will become favorites to advance to the NBA Finals. No matter what happens with James, they became a better team Wednesday with Wade and Bosh in the fold. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Women’s U.S. Open Heating Up At Oakmont; Play Starts Thursday Posted: 07 Jul 2010 12:01 PM PDT Oakmont, PA, United States (AHN) – Oakmont Country Club is one of the USGA’s favorite championship venues. It is the site of the 2010 women’s U.S. Open that begins Thursday with soaring temperatures added to the difficult course conditions at the storied layout. Cristie Kerr, fresh off her runaway victory at the LPGA Championship two weeks ago, is the favorite to survive what should be a test of stamina and shot-making. Temperatures have risen into the mid-to-high 90s and practice rounds have been slow as a result. “It’s hot, it’s humid, it’s gross,” is how Paula Creamer described things Tuesday. It took her more than three hours to navigate just nine holes. Kerr is undeterred. She’s confident and should be. “It’s my time now,” she said matter-of-factly at her media meeting on Tuesday. She prides herself on playing well on tough courses and this one at Oakmont is among the toughest. “It’s certainly one of the most penalizing,” is how Kerr described the site of “Miller’s Miracle” in 1973 when Johnny Miller shot 63 the final day to win the U.S. Open. “If you miss the fairways, you’ve got problems,” Kerr observed. What kind of scores can be expected? “I said that the winning score of anywhere from four to however many over par,” she predicted. “I mean, you never know. It could be lower. Somebody could have a great performance. The most difficult holes? They’re all difficult.” Oakmont is already playing the way the USGA prefers — firm and fast. It should continue that way although some rain is expected on Friday to possibly lower the oppressive heat conditions. U.S. Opens are a matter of survival and the weather conditions have added good hydration to the checklist along with good shot-making. Still, Kerr is odds-on the player to beat. “I feel like I’m doing a lot of things right,” she pointed out. “…but we all know in the U.S. Open you have to do them much better.” Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Fan Falls From Upper Deck Fetching Foul Ball Posted: 07 Jul 2010 11:59 AM PDT Arlington, TX, United States (AHN) – A man was hospitalized Tuesday night after falling 30 feet from an upper deck at a Texas Rangers game while trying to catch a foul ball. The man lost his balance and fell over a rail on the second deck, landing on ground level seats at the Rangers stadium, reported a spokesman for the team. The man, who was not identified, fell on top of four fans, inflicting minor injuries. The man was taken to St. Peter's Hospital in Fort Worth, where medical officials said he was responsive and able to move his extremities. The game was delayed for 16 minutes while medical personnel attended to the victim. The Rangers were playing the Cleveland Indians, and won, 12-1. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
John Deere Classic Sentimental For Bubba Watson Posted: 07 Jul 2010 11:57 AM PDT Silvis, IL, United States (AHN) – Bubba Watson couldn’t be happier coming into this week’s John Deere Classic which begins Thursday at the TPC Deere Run. His mother grew up on a farm outside Tupelo, Mississippi and Watson knows about life on a farm. “It’s a big part of me,” he said earlier this week. “My mom loves this tournament. She just loves the name John Deere. Who doesn’t? She lived on a farm and for them to eat, they had to grow their own food so John Deere was a big part of their life, the tractors and stuff.” John Deere is a big part of America’s heartland and that is the mainstay of this stop on the PGA Tour. It proceeds the Open Championship and a big part of the event has been to consider that. The company offers players a charter jet ride to Scotland when this week’s play concludes on Sunday. It is a very popular perk with many players who like the option of no lost luggage. Watson earned his spot at St. Andrews last week when Justin Rose won at Aronimink. “I was pulling for him (Rose) like I was his parents,” Watson said without hesitation. Back to defend his title is Steve Stricker. Stricker, ranked fourth, is the only competitor among the top 10 players in the world. Other notables include former Masters champion Zach Johnson, Kenny Perry, Davis Love III and Rookie of the Year candidate Rickie Fowler. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Clippers Settle On Del Negro For Coach Post Posted: 07 Jul 2010 11:54 AM PDT Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – The Los Angeles Clippers finally placed perhaps the last piece of their puzzle for the coming season Tuesday, hiring Vinny Del Negro as the team’s next head coach. Multiple league sources indicated Del Negro bested Dallas Mavericks Dwane Casey assistant for the Clippers head coaching job after Tuesday night's final interview. Del Negro, 43, coached the Chicago Bulls for two seasons and compiled a solid 82-82 regular-season slate. Known as good motivator, Del Negro was instrumental for the significant development of Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah. Del Negro led the Bulls to postseason appearances in 2009 and 2010, despite a publicly documented feud with John Paxson (Chicago's VP for basketball operations). Del Negro will coach a talented, if perennially rebuilding basketball squad led by veteran point guard Baron Davis, center Chris Kaman and 2009 draft top-pick Blake Griffin. `King` Would Bring Huge TV Ratings Boost To Knicks Or Nets Posted: 05 Jul 2010 06:06 PM PDT AHN Sports Staff New York, NY, United States (AHN) – After three days of free agency negotiations, superstar LeBron James might be a few days away from turning an NBA doormat to a perennial basketball and T.V marketing supernova. Considered as the most coveted prize in the open market, James knows these talks do not deal on basketball alone but also on the marketing side of things. James, two-time NBA MVP, is a proven superstar whose sheer basketball talents and star power made him already a world sports icon. Even in the first day of free agency period, the New Jersey Nets and the New York Knicks went straight to Cleveland to woo the alpha dog of this summer’s historic free agency class. Basketball analysts believe that among the six teams involved in the James” sweepstakes,” the Nets and Knicks are the ones that badly need the Ohio-based superstar to revive their stumbling TV ratings. Since the NBA lockout in 1999, the YES (Nets) and MSG (Knicks) have been experiencing difficulty in achieving fair TV ratings. The Knicks, despite reaching the 1999 NBA finals, only garnered a 3.05 rating (nearly 207, 781 households) in that season and consistently plummeted to a lowly .91 rating (68,193 households) last season. The Nets, who played in the NBA finals twice last decade, only reached as high as a 1.01 rating since joining YES network in 2002-2003 season. With these results, it is evident that these two franchises need a basketball star that can lead them to ‘greener’ pastures. Since James arrival in Cleveland, Fox Sports Ohio received enormous TV success in each NBA season, reaching the climax of 8.8 in 2008-2009. Although Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are still available, there’s no other player in the market that can generate huge followers across the nation like LeBron. The Nets and Knicks have high hopes James would eventually land in their respective turf. YES and MSG await the King’s next move, or not, as well. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Reds` Hot: Club Seven Homers In Rout Of Cubs Posted: 05 Jul 2010 06:06 PM PDT Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor Chicago, IL, United States (AHN) – The Cincinnati Reds have won 7 of their last 10 games, taking first place in the NL. The Chicago Cubs became the latest victim of the red-hot Cincinnati bats, taking a 14-3 pounding in an eight-run seventh inning Sunday at Wrigley. Drew Stubbs smashed three home runs with five RBI. Paul Janish, went 4-for-4 with three RBI, and a two-run homer in the rout. Cubs’ Tyler Colvin hit a two-run shot vs. Reds pitcher Mike Leake for two runs in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead. Cincinnati did the rest, making it a memorable afternoon for the Reds and Stubbs. “You could tell in BP it would be a good day for the hitters,” Stubbs told mlb.com. “With the wind blowing out the way it was, all you’re looking to do was get pitches up and try to drive the ball.” Lilly recorded two quick outs in the top of the seventh, with the Cubs trailing 5-3. Then the Reds went into a hitting frenzy by taking a 10-run lead. “I’ve never done it at any level-Little League, high school, college,” Stubbs said about his five RBI and trio of homers. “I think I’ve only got a handful of two-homer games. Three is something special.” The Reds took three of four from the Cubs, and will move to New York and then Philadelphia to conclude their 11-game road trip. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
