Report: Receiver Welker Ready For Patriots Training Camp Posted: 27 Jul 2010 05:34 AM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Foxborough, MA, United States (AHN) – All-Pro wide receiver Wes Welker, who underwent reconstructive knee surgery following an injury last season, is reportedly ready to go for the Patriots when training camp opens Thursday According to Boston Globe.com, citing a source, the 29-year-old Welker, a two-time NFL receptions leader and a First-Team All-Pro selection, will start training camp in time. He will compete in all drills, contact included, with his teammates Thursday. Although there is the inherent risk in clearing Welker for full contact when camp opens, the Pats have the option to play it conservatively and place the two-time Pro Bowl selection on the Active Physically Unable to Perform list prior to training camp. That move would keep Welker out of practice but would leave the possibility of being placed on the Reserve PUP, which in turn would keep the player out for the first six weeks of the season, the paper reported. Allowing Welker on the field this week would prevent the Patriots to fill his place on the roster during the first six weeks, considering the league’s roster limits. Welker, who took part in the Pats’ organized team activities, is way ahead of his recovery schedule for over a month now. But he has to wait to be officially cleared. After tearing both his ACL and MCL during a Week 17 game in Houston last season, Welker allowed the MCL to heal before undergoing procedure to address the torn ACL on Feb. 3. He also underwent an offseason operation to repair a torn rotator cuff sustained during the season. In 2009, Welker set career highs in catches (123) and posted 1,348 receiving yards. Wright, 34, left his ex-wife’s house at 2 am in a neighborhood police say is very safe and affluent. Police assume he was picked up by someone, though no neighbors were able to identify any vehicles. “There is nothing on his phone records, no bank transactions, his vehicles are still at his house in Smyrna,” Lt. Norm Dixon of the Collierville police said. “It’s like he literally dropped off the face of the earth.” Wright, drafted seventh overall by the Clippers in 1996, last played for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2008-09 season. Evansville Soccer Player, Thought To Be Dead After Crash, Found Alive Posted: 27 Jul 2010 05:34 AM PDT Matt Aug – AHN Sports Editor Phoenix, AZ, United States (AHN) – A case of mistaken identity is said to be the cause of the mix-up as a University of Evansville women’s soccer player, thought to be killed in a July 18 car accident, is actually alive, although her best friend perished in the crash. The cause of the confusion in which Abby Guerra, 19, survived the crash and 21-year-old Marlena Cantu, died, is not clear. One report indicated that Guerra was rendered unrecognizable from the crash due to severe head injuries, including a broken back, facial swelling and a shaved head in preparation for brain surgery. A check of dental records may have enabled authorities to properly identify the females. The driver, one of four friends on a return trip to Arizona from Disneyland, reportedly lost control of the vehicle. A fourth person, Tyler Parker, died at the scene. Several of Guerra’s teammates, coaches and friends flew to Arizona to attend Guerra’s funeral after it was planned throughout the week by her family. Instead they remained there to help the Guerras sort out the situation. “Now they are there to support Abby, her family and one another. as you can imagine, this continues to be a very emotional roller coaster for everyone involved,” said John Stanley, University of Evansville director of athletics. Guerra is listed in critical condition. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Pats, Quarterback Brady Close In On Long-Term Deal Posted: 27 Jul 2010 05:34 AM PDT Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – Recent reports suggest the New England Patriots and Tom Brady are close to completing a deal that will keep the Super Bowl-winning quarterback in New England for likely the remainder of his career. The only barrier to completing the deal this summer would stem from not knowing the specifics of the NFL’s next collective bargaining agreement. Brady, 32, showed up to the rookies training camp Sunday, three days before veterans were scheduled to report Wednesday. The five-time Pro Bowler is one of many elite quarterbacks expected to receive record contract extensions this summer. The Indianapolis Colts are attempting to give Peyton Manning the richest contract in the history of the sport. The Saints’ Drew Brees is also expected to receive a lucrative contract coming off a Super Bowl win. Brady, however, seems to be closest to striking the deal that would keep him in blue, red and grey for the remainder of his career. In addition to three Super Bowls and the 2007 NFL MVP, Brady has amassed an incredible 225 touchdowns to only 99 interceptions, while passing for 30,844 yards and posting a 93.3 QB rating in 11 NFL seasons. The first one came in the third innings in the form of a solo, while the second one was hit in the eighth innings. Dan Haren, the Arizona player who was traded by the Angels for it’s 4 players, showed his worth, as he struck out eight before being injured by Kevin’s shot in the 5th inning.
