Pak vs Aus 2nd Test Score: Pakistan Make Australia Bow Posted: 23 Jul 2010 12:00 PM PDT Australia vs Pakistan In the see saw of a match that the second test of Australia vs Pakistan is turning out, the third day too saw some great gameplay. The day started with Australia having just 4 wickets in their stable, but Mohammed Aamer soon turned that number into just one, as he took three wickets in the one hour of his bowling spell. But the die hard spirit of Australia was at display once again, as Steven Smith scored a half century and brought Australia’s lead to 180 but towards the end of the day Pakistan had come pretty close to it, thanks mainly due to the focus and discipline of Farhat and Azhar Ali, whose 110 run partnership helped Pakistan to compose themselves again after the early loss of Salman Butt. Now Pakistan are within an earshot of victory and it would take a lot of effort from them to lose this match. It would be their first win since 1995 against Australia in this longer format of the game. At the end of the day three the scoreboard showed Pakistan 140 for 3 and needing just 40 runs to win with 2 days of cricket still left. |

Saratoga race track Saratoga, California: Summer fun would be starting tomorrow on July 23 with the Saratoga Races. This is the 142nd Saratoga race to happen. A million people to expect to participate in the race in the next six and a half weeks. 25000 people would be there from the day of start itself. NYRA President and CEO, Charlie Hayward, said "I'm raising the bar to about 27,000.” Hayward has reduced the club house seating, giving free grand stand admissions and an opening on Friday, for the Saratoga Race Course fans. “We’ve had a rough three or four months up here and the communities really rallied behind us. We really appreciate that, and we thought with the change in opening day and the difficulties we’ve been through, it was worth giving folks a break," he said. Throughout the season, the NYRA would be offering giveaways like T-shirts, Umbrella and hats. Theses are incentives to invite people to visit the track. Unlike the past seasons, this time the days have been increased from 36 days to 40 days. Hayward says that the hotel and motel businesses are very content with the huge amount if bookings already made for the purpose. The success of the Saratoga Race would still remain a mystery until the Labor Day. |
Matt Barnes playing for LA Lakers Posted: 23 Jul 2010 07:14 AM PDT
Matt Barnes Matt Barnes prefer playing for a Championship, if given a choice between team rebuilding and playing for a championship. “Growing up in California, watching the Lakers play with Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar), Byron Scott and Michael Cooper, it was a team that I always dreamed of playing for,” Barnes told the Orlando Sentinel. He signed a two year, 3.6 million contract with LA Lakers. “It's just a great opportunity. Going to UCLA and having a chance to go back to L.A. is like a dream come true. With that said, when all this started, I said I'd be disappointed if I didn't go back to the Magic, and that still stands true.” Barnes says that Cavaliers were attractive and offered him $ 7 million in two seasons. He has no feelings against Magic.(It did not offer him any contract). “As soon as that schedule comes out, I'm going to find out when we play Orlando, and I'll definitely be ready for those games.” |
Money-Wise, Tiger Out Of Woods Despite Scandals Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:28 AM PDT AHN News Staff New York, NY, United States (AHN) – The much-maligned golfing great, Tiger Woods, may have had a forgettable year with multiple allegations of extra-marital affairs and a debilitating injury that kept him out for months, but the most recognizable face in the world of sport still continues to be No. 1 on Sports Illustrated magazine’s annual list of the top 50 highest-earning athletes. Woods’ endorsements — and public image — took a huge beating after allegations surfaced that he was having affairs with more than a dozen women, and that he had also fathered a “love child.” Some of the leading brands endorsing him pulled out and many suggest that the golfer had lost $9 million in 2009. But the latest issue of the magazine shows how great a crowd-puller Woods still remains. According to Sports Illustrated, the golfer earned a whopping $90.5 million in endorsements and prize money from July 2009-June 2010. The amount is nearly $29 million more than fellow golfer Phil Mickelson, who placed second on the money list. Basketball star LeBron James moved to fourth spot, while Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, with a pay package of $33 million and another $4 million in endorsements, took the No. 5 slot. Report: Allan Houston Could Land Knicks GM Post Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:28 AM PDT AHN Sports Staff New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Former NBA sharpshooter Allan Houston is in strong contention for the New York Knicks’ GM post, multiple sources reported Thursday. ESPN reported Thursday that Houston has a big chance in landing the Knicks’ general manager role, a rumor team president Donnie Walsh did not confirm or deny. Houston, two-time NBA all-star, spent a majority of his 12-year career with the Knicks. With his consistent outside shooting, Houston became one of the cornerstones of the Knicks – along with Latrell Sprewell and Patrick Ewing – during their amazing postseason run in the 1998-1999 season in which they lost to the Spurs in six games of the NBA Finals. “He is working with me to learn the position of GM, whether with the Knicks or elsewhere,” Walsh told ESPN Thursday. “I feel Allan has the tools to be a great GM.” The 39-year old Houston was currently the Knicks’ special assistant to the president, a position that allowed him to learn more GM tactics from a seasoned executive like Walsh. Barnes, Ratliff Ink Pacts To Fortify Defending Champion Lakers Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:28 AM PDT Matt Aug – AHN Sports Editor Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – Tough to believe, but the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers may be even deeper this coming season after Thursday’s signings of free agents Matt Barnes and Theo Ratliff. Barnes, a 30-year-old forward, is known for his toughness and defense while Ratliff is a shot-blocking center. Barnes, who agreed to a two-year pact, averaged 8.8 points and 5.5 rebounds in just under 26 minutes per game in 2009-10 for the Orlando Magic. He also showed his grit in going toe-to-toe with Kobe Bryant in a regular season matchup won by the Magic, 96-94. Areas of concern for Barnes were his declining minutes and scoring in each round of the playoffs. Ratliff, who agreed to a one-year pact, will provide insurance at center for the injury-prone Andrew Bynum. Ratliff, 35, has career numbers of 7.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per contest. Seppi, Melzer Roll Into German Open Semis Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:28 AM PDT AHN Sports Staff Hamburg, Germany (AHN) – Seppi, Melzer Roll Into German Open Semis Italian Andreas Seppi marched into the semifinal round of the ATP German Open Friday, after he completed an “ambush” win over No.7 seed Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 7-6, 5-7, 7-5 at Am Rothenbaum tennis court in Hamburg, Germany. The 70th-ranked Seppi started the opening set in a fiery note, as he easily countered the power-shots of the young Brazilian. Nevertheless, Bellucci provided a Seppi a tough time in sealing the first set, which was decided through a tiebreaker. Seppi and Bellucci went toe-to-toe in the pulsating portion of the set, but in the end the Italian nailed the crucial shots and took the opening set 7-5. In the second seat, Bellucci became more confident with his shots and knocked down a potential straight sets win by Seppi. With a semifinal spot on the line, Seppi rose up to the occasion and sealed an unexpected win over Bellucci on the clay court of Am Rothenbaum. Meanwhile, No.3 seed Jurgen Melzer also advanced to the semifinal round with a 6-4, 6-1 domination over Italian Potito Starace. Starace kept the match close in the opening set, but Melzer proved too strong overall. Melzer, the 2010 French Open semifinalist, remains on track of barging into the top-10 with another superb outing at ATP German Open. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Halos Acquire Infielder Callaspo From Royals Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:28 AM PDT Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter Arlington, TX, United States (AHN) – Still hunting their fourth-straight AL West title, the Los Angeles Angels bolstered their offense Thursday by acquiring switch-hitting infielder Alberto Callaspo from the Kansas City Royals. The Angels sent pitchers Sean O’Sullivan and Will Smith to the Royals for Callaspo, who is expected to spend most of his time at third base. Callaspo, 27, will bring a .275 batting average, eight homers and 43 RBI to the Angels playoff chase, which took a hit Thursday in a 3-2 loss to the first-place Rangers. The Venezuela native started his career back in 2001 with the Angels, but made his major league debut in 2006 with the Diamondbacks. Callaspo didn’t homer until his breakout season in 2009, when he hit .300 in with 11 homers and 73 RBI. The Angels (51-47) will have to step it up during the remaining three games of their four game-set against Texas, now trailing the Rangers by eight games in the AL West. MLB To Test Minor League Players For HGH Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:28 AM PDT Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Major League Baseball became the first professional sports league in the country to institute blood testing for HGH Thursday. The testing will only be done on Minor League players not subject to the collective bargaining agreement. “The implementation of blood testing in the Minor Leagues represents a significant step in the detection of the illegal use of human growth hormone,” Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. “The Minor League Program employs state-of-the-art testing procedures and the addition of HGH testing provides an example for all of our drug policies in the future.” MLB hopes the new testing will pressure the players union to institute the program as part of the new CBA. The current Collective Bargaining Agreement expires Dec. 11, 2011. The current MLB testing program is one of the most comprehensive in any sport, though HGH has proven difficult to implement a testing program for. The National Center for Drug Free Sport will conduct the blood sample collection, which will be collected from the non-dominant arms of randomly selected players after games. From there, the samples go to the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory in Salt Lake City for analysis. “We fully support these programs that will help eradicate performance-enhancing drugs from baseball,” said Pat O’Conner, president and CEO of Minor League Baseball, in a statement. This is just another step in that direction.” Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Cavendish Races To His Fourth Stage Win At Tour, 14th Overall Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:28 AM PDT AHN Sports Staff Bordeaux, France (AHN) – Britain’s pride Mark Cavendish made another superb run at the 2010 Tour de France Friday, as he easily pedaled to his fourth stage win in the tournament and 14th overall in his career. The 25-year old Cavendish (HTC-Columbia) crossed the finish line ahead of Julian Dean (Team Garmin-Transitions) and Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre-Farnese) on the 198-kilometre (Salies-de-Bearn to Bordeaux) stage. Cavendish, an Island of Man native, moved into comfortable position to win the green jersey with 197 points after 18 stages of grueling competition. Cavendish, who fell 10 points short against reigning maillot vert winner Thor Hushovd (Cervelo Test Team) last year, believes he can still provide a strong finish in the sprinter’s favorite 20th stage Longjumeau to Paris (Champs-Élysées). However, the Brit still needs to beat a couple of old rivals – including Hushovd (203 points) and Petacchi – to wear the sprinters’ most-coveted jersey. Friday’s win marked Cavendish fourth stage win and 14th Tour de France stage wins in just a three-year span. Meanwhile, Spanish Alberto Contador (Team Astana) kept his grip on the yellow jersey with another solid finish, a day before the penultimate stage of the tournament. Contador holds a slim eight second lead over Luxembourgish Andy Schleck (Team CSC), but things could certainly get interesting after Saturday’s individual time trial (Bordeaux to Pauillac).
