Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Denver, CO, United States (AHN) – The Western Athletic Conference announced Tuesday it will temporarily shelve expansion plans until 2012.

On Tuesday, Commissioner Karl Benson indicated the league will not push through with its plan to replace departing Boise State.

It will instead operate with eight members in the 2011-12 season.

The remaining members of the conference, which was formed on July 27, 1962, are Fresno State, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Utah State.

Boise State, which joined the WAC in 2001, accepted an invitation to join the Mountain West Conference after this season.

On June 11, MWC officially confirmed the joining of the Broncos for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Western Athletic Conference is the sixth oldest conference of the 11 college athletic conferences currently participating in the NCAA’s Division I FBS.

Complete-Lee Dominating: M`s Pitcher Keys Win Vs. Yanks

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 06:25 AM PDT

AHN Sports Staff

Seattle, WA, United States (AHN) – Starting pitcher Cliff Lee came up with his third straight complete game Tuesday, as the Seattle Mariners booted the New York Yankees 7-4 at Yankee Stadium.

Lee was simply splendid throughout the contest, allowing only four runs and 8 hits in nine innings against the Yankees.

The left-hander has continued to rack up all-star numbers, going 7-3 with a 2.45 ERA, 78 strikeouts and just 5 walks.

Lee, who recorded his third straight complete game and fifth overall this season, has been the center of trade rumors involving several MLB teams – Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres, and the Yankees – these past weeks.

However, the former Cy Young Award winner has remained poised and has still provided hefty contributions to his present team.

After allowing two homers, Lee baffled the entire Yankees dugout.

Although his franchise record walk-free innings streak was halted by Jorge Posada at 38 1-3, Lee said the Yankees catcher should be credited for that.

“Whatever,” Lee told MLB.com Tuesday. “[Posada] fouled off a 3-2 pitch and took a pretty close pitch [for ball four]. You have to credit him for getting a walk there. I was ahead of him, 1-2, and had chances to get him out but missed too much, and he drew a walk.”

Lee, sent to the Mariners in December, is expected to be traded again before the July 31 trade deadline.

At 31, Lee remains a valuable asset for a contender seeking for a steady performer.

Tiger Wants LeBron To Play For NBA Champion Lakers

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 06:25 AM PDT

AHN Sports Staff

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – World’s No.1 golfer Tiger Woods has envisioned an L.A super-team Tuesday, citing the Lakers as the best destination for incoming free agent LeBron James.

The 34-year old Woods said he’s very intrigued of any possibility of James merging with Kobe Bryant, Ron Artest, and Pau Gasol to form a formidable unit in Los Angeles.

“Yeah, actually I would love to see him go to the Lakers,” Woods told Fox Sports Tuesday. “I’m an L.A. guy, can’t help it. That would be interesting, wouldn’t it?”

James, who will lead a talent-laden free agent class starting on July 1, remains silent regarding his next move this offseason.

ESPN reported the two-time NBA MVP met with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh last weekend, making Miami the favorite to land the three superstars.

Other than that, everything is still unclear about James’ future as cap space-rich teams like the Bulls, Nets, Knicks, and Clippers are also vying for the forward’s service.

With regards to Woods idea, the Lakers have just a very outside chance of landing James with their collective salaries already over the cap ceiling.

Woods is scheduled to defend his title at this week’s the PGA Tour’s AT&T National at the Aronimink Golf Club in Philadelphia.

World Cup: Brazil-Netherlands Tilt Highlights Quarterfinals Action

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 06:25 AM PDT

Andrew Lawn – AHN Sports Correspondent

Cape Town, South Africa (AHN) – With the 2010 World Cup Finals entering their final stages here is a look at the four quarterfinal ties.

The Netherlands vs. Brazil – The Netherlands vs. Brazil is one of the classic World Cup fixtures.

With both sides adopting a proud tradition of playing fast-paced attacking football, these two nations have produced some classic matches in the past and this one should be no different.

The Netherlands has never won a World Cup and often seem exceptional in the early rounds only to lose nerve when the competition gets serious.

With Robin Van Persie leading the line and the creative attacking talents of Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben providing the ammunition there is no doubt the Netherlands, backed by their Orange Army of fans, can trouble Brazil.

However, Dunga has installed a new defensive resilience in the five-times World Champions, which sits behind the undoubted attacking mastery of Kaka, Robinho and Luis Fabiano.

As such we can expect goals in this one but expect Brazil to edge it.

AHN Prediction: Brazil 3-2.

Ghana vs. Uruguay – With South Africa beginning the trend of African sides that dropped out of these finals early, Ghana carry the hopes not of a single nation but of a continent.

Pele famously said that he felt an African side would win a World Cup by the turn of the millennium.

While that never happened, sides have threatened to go beyond the last-eight – for Ghana though this may prove the end of the line.

That’s because its fast tempo, hounding style has seen the West Africans pick up a few injuries and suspensions just as it need its big players most.

Kevin Prince Boateng has been a revelation in the center of their midfield throughout the tournament.

Alongside that, Ghana face a strong Uruguayan side, who have already seen off France, Mexico and South Korea to make it this far.

With the in-form double-act of Suarez and Forlan seemingly banging the goals in for fun, a sem-final place should be there for the two-time World Champions to take.

AHN Prediction: Uruguay 2-1.

Spain vs. Paraguay – European Champions and World Cup favorites Spain landed a dream quarterfinal with Paraguay.

Whilst their probable rivals all face each other in the last-eight, Spain come up against a Paraguayan side that has never reached this stage of a World Cup Finals, and only did so on penalties after a dour, energy sapping 120 minutes against Japan.

With David Villa already notching four goals, Spain look to have put an opening game defeat behind as it marches on in South Africa.

A 1-0 derby win over neighbors Portugal will only add to the sense this could be Spain’s year.

Paraguay, however, is famous for the dogged defense and if they can stifle Spain’s creative magicians, they could nick it.

AHN Prediction: Spain 2-0.

Germany vs. Argentina – Completing the lineup of South American teams in each quarterfinal, Argentina face England’s destroyers Germany for a place in the last-four.

With Lionel Messi sparkling in South Africa, Argentina moved to joint-second favorites with rivals Brazil following an impressive start to the finals which has seen it easily topple South Korea, Mexico, Nigeria and Greece.

Goals too from Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez make Argentina a formidable foe.

No-one though will be more confident going into the last-eight than Germany.

After a 4-1 demolition of their old rivals England in the last-16, Germany is on top of its game.

Mesut Ozil added to his burgeoning reputation with some stellar performances, while goals from veteran striker Miroslav Klose and young pretender Thomas Mueller helped Germany score four twice already in South Africa.

That said, don’t expect Argentina to crumble in the manner England did, and to advance in the end possibly after extra-time or penalties.

AHN Prediction: 2-2 – Argentina win on penalties.

Tiger Shoots For Normal In Philly; Denies Rift With Caddie

Posted: 30 Jun 2010 06:25 AM PDT

Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter

Newton Square, PA, United States (AHN) – Tiger Woods’ life an been a bizarre journey at best for the past seven months. He believes things might be getting better for him, at least on the golf course.

“I think my life our here on tour is being more normal,” Woods said as he arrived at the historic Aronimink Golf Club, site of this week’s AT&T National, the tournament that benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation and the event that Woods as served as official host in the past.

Woods is the defending champion after his victory last year at Congressional.

With the events that have surrounded Woods, his name was removed this year from the official “host” title but he’s still playing the role, his foundation is still the main beneficiary of the event.

The one question this week is how normal is Woods’ golf game?

After contending at the U.S. Open, Woods said he felt things turning for him. “I feel like I can play now. I got a feel for my game.”

He also diffused the talk of any rift between him and caddie Steve Williams, going back to some mistakes in the final round of the Open at Pebble Beach.

“Stevie and I make mistakes out there. Of course. We’re not perfect,” Woods said on Tuesday.

“I thought I played pretty good at the Open,” Woods went on to explain. “On Saturday I left the ball below the hole all day. Sunday I didn’t.”

Woods says he’s also looking towards the British Open at St. Andrews in two weeks. “I’m really looking forward to that. I heard it’s running real fast over there already.”

But first things first.

Woods is actually the man to beat this week on the classic Donald Ross golf course. He’s still No. 1 in the world and there’s only one other player in the field from the top 10 — Jim Furyk.

Another player returning to action will be Dustin Johnson, the 54-hole leader at the U.S. Open who went through an atomic-style meltdown during the first six holes of the final day.

He’ll get a lot of attention on Thursday as he’s paired with Woods.

It will also be interesting to see how the Philadelphia crowds receive Woods. This is the city that once booed Santa Claus in a parade.

The course itself will pose a challenge for Woods and other contenders. Ross, the icon of golf course architecture, once referred to Aronimink as his “masterpiece” will present deep rough and severely sloped greens and some man-size par four holes.

It will be a challenge for Woods in his final tune up before the Open Championship in Scotland.

A victory by Woods this week would go a long way in his quest for “normal.”

At least for his golf game.

TIGER NOTES: Tiger Woods’ former swing coach Hank Haney recently sat with Guy Yocum from Golf Digest for an upcoming issue and gave a more detailed insight into his long relationship as Woods’ instructor.

When asked if the relationship was dysfunctional, Haney told Yocum:

“It didn’t get dysfunctional. It always was dysfunctional.”

Versailles, France (AHN) – England’s Lee Westwood was hospitalized Wednesday when doctors feared a swollen lower leg might have indicated the presence of a blood clot.

Westwood withdrew from the pro-am event Wednesday for the Alstrom Open de France.

Westwood spokesman Stuart Cage indicated Westwood was given anti-inflammatories and was released from the hospital. He hopes to be in the field when play begins Thursday.

NASCAR Crew Member Suspended For Violating Substance-Abuse Policy

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 06:35 PM PDT

Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Daytona Beach, FL, United States (AHN) – A crew member for Richard Petty Motorsports has been suspended indefinitely from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for violating the sanctioning body’s substance abuse policy.

Chris Moore, who works for the No. 43 team driven by AJ Allmendinger, was found in violation via NASCAR’s random testing policy.

The suspension comes for violating Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 19 (violation of the NASCAR substance abuse policy) of the 2010 NASCAR Rule Book.

Former two-time Nationwide Series champion Randy LaJoie was nabbed by the same policy just last week.

LaJoie, also an analyst for ESPN, had filed for a spotter’s license with the No. 18 car in the Nationwide Series.

Phils Infielders Utley, Polanco Go On Disabled List

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 06:35 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Philadelphia, PA, United States (AHN) – The Philadelphia Phillies suffered another major blow after losing second baseman Chase Utley and third baseman Placido Polanco to injuries. Both players join five others on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.

Utley, 31, who has been on the disabled list just once in his career- – 2007- – was forced to come out in the ninth inning of Monday’s 7-3 loss to Cincinnati with a thumb injury.

The four-time All Star and Silver Slugger Award winner injured his right thumb while sliding into second.

Known for his endurance, Utley, together with Jimmy Rollins, form one of the best middle-infield combinations in the NL.

Utley, the leading vote-getter for NL second baseman, is batting .277 with 11 home runs and 37 RBI in 72 contests this season.

Polanco, also a candidate for a starting spot in the upcoming All-Star Game in Anaheim, has been dealing with a left elbow injury for over a month.

The 34-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, in his second stint with the Phillies, missed time due to the injury but avoided the DL.

Despite addressing the injury with a cortisone shot in recent days, the Phils felt it was necessary to send the 2006 ALCS MVP to the disabled list.

This season, Polanco is batting .318 with five home runs and 27 RBI.

As a result, the defending NL champions Phillies called up infielder Brian Bocock and utility player Greg Dobbs from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Philadelphia would also be looking for a trade in the event both Utley and Polanco are sidelined for more than two weeks.

The Phillies, 4 1-2 games back of the first-place Braves in the NL East entering Tuesday, wrap up the month of June with seven players on the disabled list, including two key infielders.

The Phillies, who have won five of their last six games, are trying to bounce back in the second installment of a three -game set against the Reds Tuesday at Great American Ball Park.

Nowitzki Reportedly Opts Out Of Mavs Deal

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 06:35 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Dallas, TX, United States (AHN) – The Dallas Mavericks are expected to go all out in retaining their leading scorer in franchise history, Dirk Nowitzki, who has reportedly elected to opt out of the final year of his contract and became an unrestricted free agent.

The veteran All-Star, who has been the face of the Mavericks since the club acquired him on draft day in 1998, will be leaving $21.5 million on the table, if he opts out, according to the Dallas Morning News.com.

Apart from the official opt-out letter notification, the nine-time All-Star, who turned 32 earlier this month, also mailed a notification from Germany to ensure its arrival before Wednesday’s deadline, according to reports.

Nowitzki could still sign a new deal with Dallas in free agency, which could provide more security to the 2007 NBA MVP winner.

A renegotiation for a longer deal, with consideration to the league’s over-36 rule, would also enable the Mavs to free up salary cap space to pursue a star free agent via the sign-and-trade route.

Nowitzki has been with the Mavericks since 1998-99 after Milwaukee selected him with the ninth overall pick in that year’s draft and traded him to Dallas.

The 7-foot, 245 pound native of Germany has been the Mavericks most prolific scorer over the last decade.

This past season, he averaged 25.0 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 81 games.

It marked the 10th straight year in which he averaged over 20 points and seven boards for the Mavs.

Over 12 NBA seasons, Nowitzki has averaged 22.9 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

Shocking Wimbledon 2010 Quarterfinals result, Venus Williams out

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 11:30 AM PDT

 Wimbledon Cup

Wimbledon Cup

The biggest shocking news of the Wimbledon Cup came when the world saw five times winner Venus Williams was defeated by 82nd ranked Bulgarian Tsventena Pironkove 6-2, 6-3 on Tuesday.

This is considered to be her worst performance in the Wimble don till now.
Another major surprise came when two-time U.S. open winner Kim Clijster was thrashed by 21st seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva. She won the match in the sets of 21st seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva.

Willams failed to gain any sort of momentum against the 22 year old Pironkov
Venus realistically said after the match, "I just didn’t get enough balls in today. I let it spiral and didn’t get any balls in. I had a lot of opportunities, a lot of short balls and I seemed to hit each one out. "

Happy Pironkova, said, "Honestly, I think no one expected me to play semifinal in Wimbledon and to beat Venus Williams like that. Coming here I really just wanted to play a good game, to maybe win one or two rounds."

She added, "I still cannot believe that I reached the semifinals. This is truly like a dream to me."

Clijsters who came out of retirement thrashed fellow Belgian Justine Henin on Monday.

Coyotes Sign Wolski To Two-Year Pact; Ship Winnik To Avs

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 07:24 AM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Glendale, AZ, United States (AHN) – The Phoenix Coyotes decided Monday to retain Wojtek Wolski, re-signing the left winger to a two-year contract.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 24-year-old Wolski came to Phoenix in a trade early March that sent forwards Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter.

In his first game in a Coyotes uniform, the young scorer scored the game-winning tally against his former club, the Avalanche.

Last season, Wolski registered career-highs of 23 goals and 42 assists in 80 contests between the two teams.

In 320 career games, Wolski recorded 79 goals and 132 assists.

Also Monday, the Coyotes struck another deal with Colorado, shipping forward Daniel Winnik for a fourth-round pick in the 2012 NHL draft.

Winnik, drafted in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Coyotes, led the club’s forwards with 54 blocked shots and placed second in the team with 30 takeaways.

In 74 games last season, Winnik had four goals and 15 helpers.

Heat Emerge As Favorite To Land LeBron; Bosh Could Also Land In Miami

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 07:24 AM PDT

Tom Spousta – AHN Sports Reporter

Miami, FL, United States (AHN) – The Miami Heat has emerged as the front runner in the LeBron James free agent sweepstakes, according to various media reports. Or is it the Chicago Bulls? Or the Dallas Mavericks?

Or will King James just stay put in Cleveland?

One thing is clear: NBA free agency begins at midnight Wednesday (that’s Thursday morning, July 1 to most folks). Not even LeBron James can dunk over Father Time.

Although he can — and apparently did, says ESPN.com — meet with fellow free agents Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade in a summit or sorts last weekend in Miami.

Wade reportedly called the confab between three of the NBA’s biggest stars and made a strong pitch about all three of them playing for the Heat.

Indeed, South Beach can be an alluring recruitment tool.

These were supposedly serious talks, which if true would make it one of the greatest signing coups in any sport.

Monday, Fox Sports Radio’s Stephen A. Smith reported James and Bosh are on board to join Wade. Also, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel quoted sources saying the Heat believes it can pull off signing all three players, despite the complications..

Others reportedly still alive in the LeBron Sweepstakes include the Bulls, who James is expected to meet with this week, and the Mavericks, who’ve been described as a dark horse to land him.

And there’s always a chance for Cleveland, although the Cavs may not have the dough to bring James the marquee help he wants.

July 1 is the date free agency starts, but a league rule dictates teams can’t actually execute contracts until July 8.

Cubs Put Zambrano On Restricted List After Dugout Spat

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 07:24 AM PDT

Tom Spousta – AHN Sports Reporter

Chicago, IL, United States (AHN) – The Chicago Cubs made what seemed like an obvious and overdue move Tuesday by placing Carlos Zambrano on the restricted list and convincing him to enter an anger management program.

The big right-hander was suspended for three games after an outburst and shouting match with Derrick Lee in the Cubs dugout last Friday.

It was another of several incidents with Zambrano over the years, and he reportedly agreed with the team to seek treatment for emotional issues.

“Hopefully he goes and gets the help he needs and can rectify some of his actions with his teammates and be able to move forward after the break,” Cubs general manager Jim Hendry told reporters in announcing the decision.

As part of treatment, Zambrano is expected to apologize to Lee and his teammates when he returns, which at the earliest would be July 15.

Zambrano, 3-6 with a 5.66 ERA this season, served two suspensions for outbursts during the past year. Back in 2007, he also got in a fight with teammate Michael Barrett.

Poor Calls Force FIFA`s Blatter To Consider Goal Line Technology

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 07:24 AM PDT

Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter

Johannesburg, South Africa (AHN) – President Sepp Blatter told reporters Tuesday FIFA will be looking into adding goal line replay technology after several referee debacles at South Africa 2010.

FIFA is the only governing body of a major sport that does not employ any kind of technology to aid referees.

“It would be nonsense to not look at using that technology after what has happened,” said Blatter.

England was denied a goal against Germany because the ref did not see the ball cross the line, as shown clearly on the replay. Goal line technology would have evened the score at the half in that 4-1 loss.

In the very next match, Carlos Tevez was awarded the opening goal for Argentina against Mexico despite being clearly offsides.

Though that was just one of many offsides calls that were questionable, FIFA does not plan to use the technology to review offsides calls.

The technology would rather just be in use in goal line calls, a welcomed addition as far as most refs are concerned.

“I am open-minded for anything that would make us more credible,” referee Howard Webb told reporters after a training session in Pretoria. “Whatever tools I have I will use to the best of my abilities.”

FIFPro, the entity representing FIFA players around the world, is putting pressure on Blatter to push the process forward.

“The entire football world once again reacted with disbelief to FIFA’s stubborn insistence that technology does not belong in football,” FIFPro said in a statement. “The credibility of the sport is at stake.”

Blatter did not offer much details into the process of adding the technology or when it would be implemented by, but this will likely be the last World Cup without at least goal line technology.

Elbow Forces Tigers Pitcher Zumaya Back To Disabled List

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 07:24 AM PDT

Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter

Minneapolis, MN, United States (AHN) – The Detroit Tigers placed Joel Zumaya on the disabled list Tuesday, one day after the hard-throwing righty left a 7-5 win over the Minnesota Twins clenching his elbow in pain in the eighth inning.

Zumaya, 25, withered in pain after throwing a fastball to Delmon Young and was helped off the field by trainers.

Though no details were given on the extent of the injury, the pained look on Zumaya’s face Monday indicated he could be out for an extended period of time.

“I don’t want to speculate other than that it was obvious he was in a huge amount of pain,” said manager Jim Leland. “We’re hoping for the best.”

Zumaya has already come back from a dislocated shoulder in 2007 and a stress fracture in the same shoulder in 2008. Continued problems forced him to have season-ending surgery on the shoulder last August.

Through Monday’s appearance, Zumaya is 2-1 with a 2.58 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 38 1-3 innings this season, already exceeding his innings total from the past three seasons.

The team recalled right-hander Casey Fien to take Zumaya’s place in the bullpen. Fien went 1-0 with a 2.29 ERA and three saves at Triple-A Toledo.

Cycling Great Armstrong To Retire After 2010 Tour de France

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 07:24 AM PDT

Brazil Coach Takes Criticisms In Stride To World Cup Quarterfinals

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 07:24 AM PDT

Tom Spousta – AHN Sports Reporter

Johannesburg, South Africa (AHN) – What’s that old axiom, the one from the American version of futbol, the one that says “Defense wins championships …?”

Well, Dunga for that.

As expected, Brazil has dominated the World Cup thus far, and it’s done so mostly with great defense.

Brilliant shotmaking and offensive wizardry have taken a back seat in Brazil’s ride into the quarterfinals, with just another example being its 3-0 thrashing Monday night of Chile.

So why is Brazil coach Carlos Caetano Bledorn “Dunga” Verri on the hot seat for the way his vaunted — and unbeaten — team plays?

Apparently, Brazil soccer fans tend to favor style (flashy rushes) over substance (solid victories).

Or, as former star Socrates has opined to the international soccer media, “Today’s Brazilian footballing style is an affront to our culture.”

Dunga, who was the captain of the 1994 Brazilian team which won the World Cup, doesn’t appear stung too much by the criticism.

“Everybody expresses their own preferences … I like winning,” Dunga has told reporters, adding, “The most important thing is to sleep easily at night and to take the decisions that are best for the team.”

Makes you wonder what might happen if Brazil were to lose.

And next time you hear American fans complain about the style of their favorite team, just think of Dunga.

BoSox Star Pedroia To Miss Six Weeks Due To Bone Fracture

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 07:24 AM PDT

AHN Sports Staff

Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – Second baseman Dustin Pedroia delivered an MVP-like performance Thursday, blasting three homers to power the Boston Red Sox over the Colorado Rockies 13-11 at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado.

He suffered a bone fracture the next day, however, and will miss six weeks though Pedroia won’t require surgery.

The 26-year old Pedroia was smoking hot for the Red Sox in the previous seven games, hitting .542 with 3 home runs, 7 RBIs, 13 hits, and 8 runs.

In Tuesday’s game, Pedroia blasted two homers early in the match before going for a game-clinching hat-trick in the top of the 10th inning.

Drafted 65th overall in 2004, Pedroia has been consistent power batter dating back from his minor league years.

In two minor league seasons, Pedroia averaged .308 as a quality up-and-coming infielder.

Pedroia made his big league debut on August 22, 2006 and several months later recorded his first blast on September 9, 2006.

Pedroia, the 2008 American League MVP, is also considered one of the league’s best players defensively and offensively.

Aside from leading his team in hits, runs, and doubles almost every year, Pedroia has solid fielding skills, highlighted by Gold Glove Award in 2008.

Pedroia is having another terrific output this season, averaging .293 with 12 homers, 41 RBI, and 52 runs scored.

Wimbledon: No. 2 Seed Venus, Clijsters Fall Short Of Semifinals; Serena Victorious

Posted: 29 Jun 2010 07:24 AM PDT

Tom Spousta – AHN Sports Reporter

Wimbledon, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Forget another Williams sister finals act at Wimbledon. Scratch Kim Clijsters from the tournament bracket, too.

Both Venus Williams and Clijsters, a two-time U.S. Open champion, lost Tuesday in stunning quarterfinal upsets just as they seemed poised to make a claim for the title.

Williams, seeded No. 2 behind sister Serena, was dispatched in shockingly easy fashion, losing in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to 82nd-ranked Tsvetana Pironkova.

A five-time Wimbledon champion, Venus Williams reached the final here in eight of the past 10 years.

Meanwhile, defending champion Serena Williams prevailed in a hard-fought match with China’s Li Na 7-5, 6-3.

No. 8-seeded Clijsters appeared in control after a solid first set victory, but 21st-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia came on strong to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and advance to her first Wimbledon semifinal. Clijsters compiled 36 unforced errors to only 19 for Zvonareva

Williams looked on edge for an upset from the start. She eventually would make 29 unforced errors and serve up five double-faults in falling to the 22-year-old Pironkova of Bulgaria.

Pironkova will face Zvonareva in the semifinals. In the other, Serena Williams will meet unseeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, who beat qualifier Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 8-6 to advance.

Rookie Defensive Tackle Suh, Lions Working On Contract

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 01:25 PM PDT

Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) – The Detroit Lions are currently negotiating the contract for No. 2 overall pick Ndamukong Suh, who told reporters Monday he expects to be at training camp on time.

Suh, 23, is counting on agents Roosevelt Barnes, a Lions linebacker in 1982-85, and Eugene Parker, the agent for October holdout Michael Crabtree, to reach an agreement.

“Like I’ve always said, I hope and plan to be in training camp,” Suh told reporters Friday after the Lions ended a three-day minicamp in Allen Park. “Where the contract stands? I have no clue. My agents are handling that right now.”

“I don’t really foresee any issue coming up with me not going into training camp on time,”

Suh dazzled scouts as a pivotal piece in Nebraska’s top-rated defense and nearly became a rare defensive winner of the Heisman.

Suh was named to The Sporting News and CBS Sports midseason All-American team. He also won the 2009 Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner as the top defensive player in the nation.

The Lions hope the addition of Oregon native Suh will get them back to the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

Valentine Out Of Running For Marlins Manager Post

Valentine returned stateside after six years coaching in Japan and currently works as an analyst for ESPN.

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, a longtime friend of Valentine, cited philosophical differences as the reason.

The Marlins dismissed Fredi Gonzalez Wednesday and Edwin Rodriguez took over as interim manager.

Rodriguez and Arizona third-base coach Bo Porter have been interviewed for the position.

Florida (35-40) has gone 1-4 since the change and is struggling in fourth place in the highly competitive NL East, eight games behind first place Atlanta.

Kobe Opens Up In Postseason Interview; Puts Scowl Away

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:41 AM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – A different Kobe Bryant showed up during the Lakers exit interviews.

The Lakers superstar, who collected his fifth NBA ring at the expense of the Boston Celtics, was glib and outgoing.

He showed he was capable of interacting with media, minus the scowl and clipped retort to reporters he often exhibited during the season.

Bryant, wearing a familiar game face for the past two months, said he shook off himself out of playoff mode and finally turned his cell phone back on.

According to the 12-time NBA All-Star, it was “getting back to civilization.”

Bryant, in a casual, genial and introspective manner, addressed many issues, including his health.

When asked on his priority in the offseason, the Lakers superstar indicated, “This summer for me is about getting healthy.”

“I think that will give us the best opportunity to defend our title again,” added the 14-year NBA veteran, who has been hampered with finger, ankle and right knee injuries.

Asked to comment on coach Phil Jackson, Kobe answered: “He has a great knack for bringing guys together. He’s not a rah-rah coach. I think they lose attention because they’re always trying to pump guys up. He focuses on execution, the triangle offense, and a consistent message every single day.”

On the return of Jackson to the Lakers bench, Kobe, like the rest of his teammates were stumped, indicating the team would be “drastically different” without him.

When asked to sum up the season in one word, Bryant said it was an “epic.”

It was more than epic for Bryant, who helped exorcise some of the demons in the past, including the loss to the Celtics in the 2008 NBA Finals.

In the regular season, Bryant unloaded an average 27 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5 assists and 1.55 steals.

He hiked his numbers in the postseason, averaging 29.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.35 steals.

Bryant was recognized with the NBA MVP Finals award for the second consecutive year.

Knicks Reportedly Interested In Joe Johnson, Stoudemire

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:40 AM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – The New York Knicks, who are taking part in the LeBron James derby, are also looking into other stars, including Joe Jackson of the Hawks and Suns’ Amare Stoudemire.

Apart from forming part of the pitch to lure James, the duo of Jackson and Stoudemire would be a major consolation for the Knicks in the event the reigning two-time NBA MVP does not chose to play at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks have reportedly about $32 million in cap space this summer.

It could accommodate James and also Chris Bosh, another free agent.

The team could also sign a single star, either Stoudemire or Johnson, and allocate the rest among two or three players from the next tier, including Rudy Gay, Tyson Chandler, J.J. Redick, Travis Outlaw, Raymond Felton, Luke Ridnour and Mike Miller.

Both Johnson and Stoudemire emerged as star players while playing for Mike D’Antoni, the Knicks current coach.

The Knicks are expected to separately meet Johnson and Stoudemire.

Soderling Getting Stronger As Wimbledon Progresses

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:40 AM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Wimbledon, United Kingdom (AHN) – Robin Soderling, best known for reaching the past two French Open finals, is living up to his status as the big bet for this year’s Wimbledon after destroying Brazil’s Thomas Bellucci in straight sets to reach the fourth round.

Soderling, who has made his reputation on clay, crushed the 24th-ranked Bellucci, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5, to set a clash with No. 9th seed David Ferrer.

Soderling, 25, is the only player to defeat Rafael Nadal at the French Open (2009) and end Roger Federer’s record streak of 23 consecutive Grand Slam semifinals at Roland Garros.

Soderling has never advanced beyond the fourth round in Wimbledon.

It could different this year, as Soderling, currently the only Swede in the top 300 in the ATP rankings, is all geared up for a possible showdown against Nadal, the world No. 1.

After checking a well-known temper, Soderling has vaulted up the world rankings to a career high No. 6 this year.

He has yet to drop a set this time around despite skipping to play a match on grass before coming to London.

Meanwhile, Ferrer is coming off a grueling 3-hour match against world No. 55 Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

Ferrer, ranked No. 11 in the world, outlasted the gusty Frenchman, 7-5 6-3 4-6 3-6 7-5, for a berth in the final 16 at the All England Club.

FIFA Head: No Review For Future World Cup Allocations

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:40 AM PDT

Tom Spousta – AHN Sports Reporter

Johannesburg, South Africa (AHN) – Less than half of 13 European teams advanced to the second round of the World Cup. Only one of six African countries survived. South America and Asia represent seven of the final 16 berths on soccer’s grandest stage.

That might not be what FIFA had in mind with its World Cup allocations, but the organization’s secretary general Jerome Valcke had a message for those who underachieved this time around.

Play better.

Even as he acknowledged the quality of soccer might be down in Europe and Africa, he told the assembled media there are no plans for a review of the way World Cup spots are allocated.

“There is no discussion about slots for the future, we have 32 teams. All the confederations are moving up and getting stronger. It shows that Europe is not as strong as in the past,” Valcke said to reporters.

“There are a number of explanations: some teams did not change enough from 2006; maybe also these European players play a lot of games, but most of the players on Brazil and Argentina play in Europe, too – in fact most of the players on all these teams play in Europe.

“Mainly, I think football in other countries is more strong than in the past.”

Italy, France and England, among other European clubs with poor showings, might have to agree. Ghana was the only African team that seemed to match expectations amid a clearly evident shift in the sport’s power midway through the World Cup.

Currently, Europe has 13 entries, Africa five, Asia and South America four, and CONCACAF (North and Central America and Caribbean) three. Regional playoffs and invitations to the host country determine other spots.

Given the way this World Cup has played out so far, there could be pressure on Valcke and others to re-examine that process for 2014.

Colangelo May Be Interested In Nets GM Opening

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:40 AM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – USA Basketball Director Jerry Colangelo, looking at another chance to capture an elusive NBA championship, has reportedly expressed interest in joining the rebuilding New Jersey Nets.

Colangelo, 70, the national director of USA Basketball and of the team that represented the United States in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, is interested on the Nets general manager post.

He appears to be in the running to replace outgoing Nets president Rod Thorn in New Jersey.

According to reports, the 69-year old Thorn, who has held the position with the team since 2000, will step down next month.

Apart from affecting the Nets’ pitch for NBA star LeBron James, the departure of Thorn, one of the most respected executives in the NBA, will surely impact the franchise.

Thorn, who after his arrival in New Jersey quickly turned the long-time struggling club into a contender, oversaw the selection of Georgia Tech’s Derrick Favors as the third overall pick last Thursday.

The Nets also swapped two other picks for Damion James of Texas.

The Nets, under Thorn, made the NBA Finals in 2002 and ’03 but plunged back into the depths as the NBA’s worst team this past season.

In an ESPN.com report, Colangelo, in a phone interview Sunday, said he would listen to any offer by Nets new owner Mikhail Prokhorov regarding the team president post.

“If I did get a call I’d certainly take the call,” the former executive of the Phoenix Suns said. “I still think I have some juice left. I don’t need to do anything, and I’m not seeking anything, but if the right situation presented itself and met my criteria, I would listen.”

Under the stewardship of Colangelo, the Suns reached the Finals in 1976 and in 1983. Phoenix failed to win on both occasions.

World Cup: Dutch Fly Into Quarterfinals With 1-0 Win Over Slovakia

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:40 AM PDT

Andrew Lawn – AHN Sports Correspondent

Durban, South Africa (AHN) – The Netherlands are into the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals after a 2-1 win over Slovakia in Durban.

Arjen Robben, who some feared wouldn’t feature in South Africa after the flying winger damaged a hamstring in a pre-tournament friendly, scored the opening goal after 18 minutes with a low left-foot drive which creeped inside the near post.

Wesley Sneijder wrapped the game up for the Netherlands with a calmly taken side-footed finish after Dirk Kuyt beat Mucha in the Slovakia goal to a long ball and squared to his midfield comrade.

Slovakia, whose 3-2 win eliminated the defending champions Italy in the Group stages, was always in contention.

Robert Vittek, who got two against Italy, wasted the Dutch’s best chance to level with the score at 1-0 with only 20 minutes remaining.

Freed on the edge of the Dutch box, Vittek could only fire straight at Dutch ‘keeper Steklenberg.

Slovakia did get a consolation in the last minute of the game when Vittek won and scored a penalty, his fourth goal of these finals, but it was the last kick of the game.

The Netherlands will face either Brazil or Chile, who meet later Monday, in the last-eight.

First Baseman Branyan Heads Back To Mariners In Deal With Tribe

Posted: 27 Jun 2010 02:19 PM PDT

Cincinnati, OH, United States (AHN) – The Cleveland Indians traded first baseman Russell Branyan to the Seattle Mariners for a couple of prospects Saturday night, according to published reports.

Branyan, 34, was reportedly told after Cleveland's loss vs. the Cincinnati Reds that he would return to his old club.

With the Mariners last season, Branyan collected 31 homers with 76 runs scored in 116 games, but Seattle decided not re-sign him.

Cleveland could send another player to Seattle for the deal or absorb Branyan's $2 million contract. The Indians receive Triple-A outfielder Ezequiel Carrera and Class-A shortstop Juan Diaz in exchange.

“It’s no secret that we’ve been pursuing a bat for some time,” Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik told MLB.com. “The opportunity to consummate a deal presented itself today. In Russell, we have added a bat that can help bolster our offense.

“With three-plus months to play, we want to give our team every opportunity to be as productive as possible this season, while not harming the long-term plan for the franchise."

Branyan started the season on the disabled due to a bulging disk in his lower back. He worked his way back into Cleveland's lineup, and batted .263 with 10 homers, 24 RBI and had a .819 OPS in 52 games this season before the transaction.

Branyan began his big-league career with the Tribe in 1998-2002. He has spent time with the Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, and the St. Louis Cardinals.
