Cbc World Cup 2010: CBC to get World Cup inputs from South African broadcaster Posted: 11 Jun 2010 01:27 AM PDT FIFA World Cup 2010 The ball has been set rolling at the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa, with billions catching a view via the broadcasters in their respective countries. The Canadian broadcaster CBC shall rely on the official host broadcaster chosen by FIFA for its share of the football carnival. The FIFA World Cup is the largest global sporting event that has overtaken even the Olympics. 204 countries had competed for a place in the tournament; while a maximum of 192 countries take part in the Olympics. The first game of the tournament saw the hosts taking on Mexico, who belongs to the same group as Canada, implying they too had chances of featuring in the opener in the place of Mexico. The second game between France and Uruguay is certainly a clash many are looking forward to. The history has the 1998 winners struggling to qualify for the World Cup when a controversial goal by striker Thierry Henry took the leap against Ireland. A complaint by Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen to FIFA in this regard went rather unnoticed. Meanwhile, Uruguay is the first ever winners of the World Cup in 1950 in Rio de Janeiro who overcame the Brazilian defense at their home turf. |

South Africa is beaming with excitement as they play hosts to the first ever soccer extravaganza of the continent. The country shall witness the highest ever inflow of visitors during the occasion. The celebration of world football is expected to entertain 26.29 billion viewers across 214 countries. The event would be broadcasted by 43,600 channels, with Asia boasting of 32% viewer ship. The opening match would see hosts South Africa taking on soccer giants Mexico at the Soccer City Stadium. South African Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira admitted that the match is quite a serious one, especially considering the strength of the opponents. However, he seemed hopeful that his team would successfully handle the challenge. Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela has reminded that football is not just a game, but a powerful platform that unites people around the world irrespective of the diversities. |
Branyan’s Clutch Hit Helps Tribe Rally Past Red Sox In Series Finale Posted: 10 Jun 2010 11:56 PM PDT Cleveland, OH, United States (AHN) – Russell Branyan hammered a two-out, two-run single in the ninth, as the Cleveland Indians completed a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over the Boston Red Sox Thursday at Progressive Field. Entering the third frame with a 5-0 deficit, the Indians suddenly came alive and took a 6-5 lead after the sixth. Andre Beltre tried to restore order in the ninth with a two-out, two-run blast off Indians right-hander Kerry Wood (1-2) to put Boston back ahead, 7-6. The Indians then loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the inning, setting the stage for Branyan's walk-off single that allowed Cleveland to split the four-game set. Lou Marson had two RBI's for the Indians, who overcame three errors by Andy Marte in the first inning and Woods’ blown save in the ninth to take the series finale. The Indians dropped the first two games before bouncing back with an 11-0 shellacking of the Red Sox Wednesday. Cleveland starter Mitch Talbot, in his first-ever appearance against the Red Sox as a reliever, lasted four innings after yielding five runs, two earned, on six hits. Talbot made his major league debut against Boston while playing with the Rays in 2008. His counterpart, Red Sox starter Jon Lester, who entered the contest with an undefeated streak against Cleveland, registering a 3-0 mark with a 3.89 ERA in six career starts versus the Tribe, lasted six innings. Lester was charged with six runs on nine hits and had eight strikeouts for Boston. Red Sox pitcher Daniel Bard (1-2) was saddled with loss. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Boston Bench Superb As Celtics Evade Lakers To Tie NBA Finals At 2-2 Posted: 10 Jun 2010 11:55 PM PDT Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – Glen Davis finished with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Nate Robinson added 12 points, as the Celtics bench powered a game-changing run to lift Boston to a 96-89 win over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the NBA Finals Thursday. The win ties the best-of-seven NBA Finals at two games a piece for the first time since 2006. Davis and Robinson got key minutes and responded. Boston trailed by two when they powered a game-turning 11-2 run that gave Boston a 71-64 lead with 8:22 left. Los Angeles cut it to 74-68, but Celtics coach Doc Rivers stayed with his reserves and they did not disappoint. Robinson’s jumper and Rasheed Wallace’s three, his first basket of the game, put Boston up 79-70, its biggest lead of the game up to that point. The Lakers again cut the lead to six with under a minute left, but Rajon Rondo stole an errant Kobe Bryant pass to all but seal the win. Rondo led the NBA in steals during the regular season (2.33) to make the All-Defensive First Team. Paul Pierce finished with 18 points, Kevin Garnett had 13 and Ray Allen added 12 for the Celtics. Rondo had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 33 points of 10-for-22 shooting. Pau Gasol had 21 points and Lamar Odom added 10. The series continues with a pivotal Game 5 in Boston Sunday at 8 p.m. ET. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
BoSox Slugger Ellsbury’s Rib Injury More Extensive Than Previously Thought Posted: 10 Jun 2010 11:54 PM PDT Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – An MRI taken by by Los Angeles orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum on Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury revealed a more extensive rib injury than previously thought. Ellsbury first injured his ribs in a collision with third baseman Adrian Beltre April 11. He returned after 37 games May 22 against the Phillies but played just three games before landing back on the DL. In his second game back, Ellsbury may have re-injured his ribs making a diving catch May 23. The Red Sox, with medical director Thomas Gill and Yocum collaborating, released a statement concerning the injury. “An MRI of Jacoby’s thoracic spine and posterior rib area, recommended by (Gill and Yocum) jointly, revealed a non-displaced rib fracture and edema in the left posterior-axillary line. This fracture, which is in a different area than the initial fractures and which was not present on previous scans, is likely the result of a new injury which occurred when Jacoby dove and impacted the ground during his brief return to play. Jacoby will require several weeks of rest and physical therapy.” No time table has yet been set for Ellsbury’s recovery, though it is unlikely he would return before the July 13 All Star game. Ellsbury, 26, led the majors in stolen bases last year with 70 while batting .301 with 60 RBI. In the nine games he played this year, he batted .250 with three RBI and two stolen bases. The Oregon native is one of only three MLB players of non-Hispanic Native American descent, the others being Kyle Lohse of the St. Louis Cardinals and Joba Chamberlain of the New York Yankees. The Sox (35-26) would be at least tied for first place in four of the other five MLB divisions. However, in the highly-competitive AL East, they are just third and trail the league’s best record, the Tampa Bay Rays (39-20), by five games. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Defending World Champ Italy Weaker, But Still Too Strong For Group F Foes Posted: 10 Jun 2010 11:52 PM PDT Cape Town, South Africa (AHN) – Defending World Champions Italy head to South Africa dubbed by some observers ‘the worst side ever to attempt a defense of their crown’. With a side almost identical to that which won the tournament four years ago, talent and experience is abundant. Sadly for the Italians, so is age. As such the majority of the Italian side is in its mid-thirties which, as France found to their cost four years ago, is a recipe for any early flight home. That said, it would be a shock if Italy didn’t make it out of Group F and into the last 16. Likely to follow Italy into the last sixteen are Paraguay who will be competing in their fourth consecutive Finals. Now without charismatic goalkeeper and penalty-taker Jose Chilavert, Paraguay may not be quite the force they were in the past, but it wouldn’t be a massive shock if it progresses further than its more illustrious group rivals. A long-shot to make it out of Group F are Slovakia who thrive under the role of underdog and could pip one of the bigger nations if they can take points off either. Like the US, Slovakia boasts a father-son combination in their squad in the form of Head Coach Vladimir Weiss and young forward, also Vladimir. Much will depend on 22 year old midfielder Marek Hamsik who looks destined for a huge career in the game. The minnows of Group F are New Zealand, who have been given the second longest odds of winning the tournament at 500/1. A narrow 1-0 aggregate win over Bahrain in a qualifying playoff is unlikely to boost confidence among Kiwi fans. Quality may be short in supply, but New Zealand will make up for that with a dogged determination and tenacity in this the first World Cup since 1982. That said, a New Zealand goal at the finals would feel like a win, such are Kiwi hopes. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
MLS: Wizards Arrest Winless Skid, Shut Down Expansion Union Posted: 10 Jun 2010 11:51 PM PDT Kansas City, KS, United States (AHN) – Kei Kamara and Graham Zusi each tallied a goal in the first half, helping the Kansas City Wizards end a winless skid with a 2-0 victory over the expansion Philadelphia Union Thursday at Community America Ballpark. The win snapped an eight-game winless streak in league play by the Wizards (2-5-3), whose more recent fixture was a scoreless draw at Toronto FC last weekend. That stalemate enabled Kansas City to notch its first road point of the season. The Wizards drew first blood in the ninth minute after the 25-year-old Kamara off a feed from team captain Davy Arnaud detonated an 18-yard blast. It went past Philadelphia 'keeper Chris Seitz and into the backpost. Zusi then won the ball at midfield and headed it toward Ryan Smith, who after making a hard run at the Union's goal, found a streaking Zusi to hike the advantage 2-0 at the 35th. The setback dropped the Union (2-7-1) further back in the Eastern race. Philadelphia has registered only two victories in 10 games through the first third of the season. With the 16-day World Cup break, Kansas City is slated to play June 26 when it entertains Red Bull New York. The Union will aim to bounce back against Seattle Sounders FC the following day in their next MLS fixture. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Federal Council Approves Snapper, Grouper Fishing Ban Off Florida Posted: 10 Jun 2010 11:50 PM PDT Orlando, FL, United States (AHN) – With its primary objective of halting red snapper overfishing, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council passed a fishing ban on red snapper Wednesday. It covers a 5,000 square mile area off of the coast of Georgia and northern Florida in water depths ranging from 98 to 240 feet. The latest regulation makes the temporary ban effected in January permanent and also takes the red-snapper protection one step further. Proponents of the measure are seeking to avoid any unintentional deaths of red snapper by barring fishing of other snapper and grouper species. On the other hand, local fishermen have indicated now and in the past that the ban would put many of them out of business. The measure, approved by a 9-4 vote by the council, a regional board that advises the federal government on fishing regulation, drew strong reactions not only from fishermen but also those affected in the industry, which include charter-boat captains, recreational anglers, seafood peddlers among others. According to many opponents of the measure, the ban should be postponed until a new red-snapper assessment is done. The said regulation needs the final approval of U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke |
Chicago To Give Blackhawks Big Welcome; Sponsors To Foot Parade Cost Posted: 10 Jun 2010 11:48 PM PDT Chicago, IL, United States (AHN) – The Blackhawks will be feted with a heroes welcome in Chicago Friday after outlasting Philadelphia in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals Wednesday that ended a 49-year-old title drought. A victory parade will kick things off Friday followed by a rally on Michigan Avenue. The ticker-tape will start at the intersection of Wacker Drive and Washington Street at around 10:30 a.m. then it will pass Michigan Avenue followed by Michigan to East Wacker Drive, where the rally will take place. The parade and celebration will mark the first title for the Windy City's four major sports teams since the White Sox brought home the World Series in 2005. A jubilant Blackhawks team stepped off the team's chartered plane just before 4 a.m. CT Thursday at O’Hare International Airport, with captain Jonathan Toews holding the prized Stanley Cup high above his head. It was a "crazy flight", referring to the trip home, according to Toews, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner, as playoff MVP. Toews said, as reported by ESPN.com, “No one was sitting down. No one was relaxing. It was just our way of getting the party started. We’re happy to be here, back at our home in Chicago, and we’re ready to show this off to our fans here.” Coach Joel Quenneville agreed with Toews and indicated that flight "was better than the game." "Everybody was at a different level than they’ve been at in a long time, Quenneville said. "The guys, you can tell they’re a young group of guys, they accomplished a lot, and they’re really enjoying the moment, and it’s fun watching these guys take it to the next level.” Meanwhile, Mayor Richard Daley assured the public that the Blackhawks championship parade will "not cost the taxpayers any money," Chicago Tribune.com reported. Daley said that the taxpayers of the cash-strapped Chicago will not be burdened, but indicated that sponsors will instead pick up the tab. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
