Rookie Defensive Tackle Suh, Lions Working On Contract Posted: 28 Jun 2010 01:25 PM PDT Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) – The Detroit Lions are currently negotiating the contract for No. 2 overall pick Ndamukong Suh, who told reporters Monday he expects to be at training camp on time. Suh, 23, is counting on agents Roosevelt Barnes, a Lions linebacker in 1982-85, and Eugene Parker, the agent for October holdout Michael Crabtree, to reach an agreement. “Like I’ve always said, I hope and plan to be in training camp,” Suh told reporters Friday after the Lions ended a three-day minicamp in Allen Park. “Where the contract stands? I have no clue. My agents are handling that right now.” “I don’t really foresee any issue coming up with me not going into training camp on time,” Suh dazzled scouts as a pivotal piece in Nebraska’s top-rated defense and nearly became a rare defensive winner of the Heisman. Suh was named to The Sporting News and CBS Sports midseason All-American team. He also won the 2009 Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner as the top defensive player in the nation. The Lions hope the addition of Oregon native Suh will get them back to the playoffs for the first time since 1999. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Valentine Out Of Running For Marlins Manager Post Posted: 28 Jun 2010 01:23 PM PDT Miami, FL, United States (AHN) – Several media outlets reported Monday former manager Bobby Valentine is no longer being considered for the Florida Marlins post. Valentine returned stateside after six years coaching in Japan and currently works as an analyst for ESPN. Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria, a longtime friend of Valentine, cited philosophical differences as the reason. The Marlins dismissed Fredi Gonzalez Wednesday and Edwin Rodriguez took over as interim manager. Rodriguez and Arizona third-base coach Bo Porter have been interviewed for the position. Florida (35-40) has gone 1-4 since the change and is struggling in fourth place in the highly competitive NL East, eight games behind first place Atlanta. Kobe Opens Up In Postseason Interview; Puts Scowl Away Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:41 AM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – A different Kobe Bryant showed up during the Lakers exit interviews. The Lakers superstar, who collected his fifth NBA ring at the expense of the Boston Celtics, was glib and outgoing. He showed he was capable of interacting with media, minus the scowl and clipped retort to reporters he often exhibited during the season. Bryant, wearing a familiar game face for the past two months, said he shook off himself out of playoff mode and finally turned his cell phone back on. According to the 12-time NBA All-Star, it was “getting back to civilization.” Bryant, in a casual, genial and introspective manner, addressed many issues, including his health. When asked on his priority in the offseason, the Lakers superstar indicated, “This summer for me is about getting healthy.” “I think that will give us the best opportunity to defend our title again,” added the 14-year NBA veteran, who has been hampered with finger, ankle and right knee injuries. Asked to comment on coach Phil Jackson, Kobe answered: “He has a great knack for bringing guys together. He’s not a rah-rah coach. I think they lose attention because they’re always trying to pump guys up. He focuses on execution, the triangle offense, and a consistent message every single day.” On the return of Jackson to the Lakers bench, Kobe, like the rest of his teammates were stumped, indicating the team would be “drastically different” without him. When asked to sum up the season in one word, Bryant said it was an “epic.” It was more than epic for Bryant, who helped exorcise some of the demons in the past, including the loss to the Celtics in the 2008 NBA Finals. In the regular season, Bryant unloaded an average 27 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5 assists and 1.55 steals. He hiked his numbers in the postseason, averaging 29.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.35 steals. Bryant was recognized with the NBA MVP Finals award for the second consecutive year. Knicks Reportedly Interested In Joe Johnson, Stoudemire Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:40 AM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor New York, NY, United States (AHN) – The New York Knicks, who are taking part in the LeBron James derby, are also looking into other stars, including Joe Jackson of the Hawks and Suns’ Amare Stoudemire. Apart from forming part of the pitch to lure James, the duo of Jackson and Stoudemire would be a major consolation for the Knicks in the event the reigning two-time NBA MVP does not chose to play at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks have reportedly about $32 million in cap space this summer. It could accommodate James and also Chris Bosh, another free agent. The team could also sign a single star, either Stoudemire or Johnson, and allocate the rest among two or three players from the next tier, including Rudy Gay, Tyson Chandler, J.J. Redick, Travis Outlaw, Raymond Felton, Luke Ridnour and Mike Miller. Both Johnson and Stoudemire emerged as star players while playing for Mike D’Antoni, the Knicks current coach. The Knicks are expected to separately meet Johnson and Stoudemire. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Soderling Getting Stronger As Wimbledon Progresses Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:40 AM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Wimbledon, United Kingdom (AHN) – Robin Soderling, best known for reaching the past two French Open finals, is living up to his status as the big bet for this year’s Wimbledon after destroying Brazil’s Thomas Bellucci in straight sets to reach the fourth round. Soderling, who has made his reputation on clay, crushed the 24th-ranked Bellucci, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5, to set a clash with No. 9th seed David Ferrer. Soderling, 25, is the only player to defeat Rafael Nadal at the French Open (2009) and end Roger Federer’s record streak of 23 consecutive Grand Slam semifinals at Roland Garros. Soderling has never advanced beyond the fourth round in Wimbledon. It could different this year, as Soderling, currently the only Swede in the top 300 in the ATP rankings, is all geared up for a possible showdown against Nadal, the world No. 1. After checking a well-known temper, Soderling has vaulted up the world rankings to a career high No. 6 this year. He has yet to drop a set this time around despite skipping to play a match on grass before coming to London. Meanwhile, Ferrer is coming off a grueling 3-hour match against world No. 55 Frenchman Jeremy Chardy. Ferrer, ranked No. 11 in the world, outlasted the gusty Frenchman, 7-5 6-3 4-6 3-6 7-5, for a berth in the final 16 at the All England Club. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
FIFA Head: No Review For Future World Cup Allocations Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:40 AM PDT Tom Spousta – AHN Sports Reporter Johannesburg, South Africa (AHN) – Less than half of 13 European teams advanced to the second round of the World Cup. Only one of six African countries survived. South America and Asia represent seven of the final 16 berths on soccer’s grandest stage. That might not be what FIFA had in mind with its World Cup allocations, but the organization’s secretary general Jerome Valcke had a message for those who underachieved this time around. Play better. Even as he acknowledged the quality of soccer might be down in Europe and Africa, he told the assembled media there are no plans for a review of the way World Cup spots are allocated. “There is no discussion about slots for the future, we have 32 teams. All the confederations are moving up and getting stronger. It shows that Europe is not as strong as in the past,” Valcke said to reporters. “There are a number of explanations: some teams did not change enough from 2006; maybe also these European players play a lot of games, but most of the players on Brazil and Argentina play in Europe, too – in fact most of the players on all these teams play in Europe. “Mainly, I think football in other countries is more strong than in the past.” Italy, France and England, among other European clubs with poor showings, might have to agree. Ghana was the only African team that seemed to match expectations amid a clearly evident shift in the sport’s power midway through the World Cup. Currently, Europe has 13 entries, Africa five, Asia and South America four, and CONCACAF (North and Central America and Caribbean) three. Regional playoffs and invitations to the host country determine other spots. Given the way this World Cup has played out so far, there could be pressure on Valcke and others to re-examine that process for 2014. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Colangelo May Be Interested In Nets GM Opening Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:40 AM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor New York, NY, United States (AHN) – USA Basketball Director Jerry Colangelo, looking at another chance to capture an elusive NBA championship, has reportedly expressed interest in joining the rebuilding New Jersey Nets. Colangelo, 70, the national director of USA Basketball and of the team that represented the United States in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, is interested on the Nets general manager post. He appears to be in the running to replace outgoing Nets president Rod Thorn in New Jersey. According to reports, the 69-year old Thorn, who has held the position with the team since 2000, will step down next month. Apart from affecting the Nets’ pitch for NBA star LeBron James, the departure of Thorn, one of the most respected executives in the NBA, will surely impact the franchise. Thorn, who after his arrival in New Jersey quickly turned the long-time struggling club into a contender, oversaw the selection of Georgia Tech’s Derrick Favors as the third overall pick last Thursday. The Nets also swapped two other picks for Damion James of Texas. The Nets, under Thorn, made the NBA Finals in 2002 and ’03 but plunged back into the depths as the NBA’s worst team this past season. In an ESPN.com report, Colangelo, in a phone interview Sunday, said he would listen to any offer by Nets new owner Mikhail Prokhorov regarding the team president post. “If I did get a call I’d certainly take the call,” the former executive of the Phoenix Suns said. “I still think I have some juice left. I don’t need to do anything, and I’m not seeking anything, but if the right situation presented itself and met my criteria, I would listen.” Under the stewardship of Colangelo, the Suns reached the Finals in 1976 and in 1983. Phoenix failed to win on both occasions. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
World Cup: Dutch Fly Into Quarterfinals With 1-0 Win Over Slovakia Posted: 28 Jun 2010 07:40 AM PDT Andrew Lawn – AHN Sports Correspondent Durban, South Africa (AHN) – The Netherlands are into the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals after a 2-1 win over Slovakia in Durban. Arjen Robben, who some feared wouldn’t feature in South Africa after the flying winger damaged a hamstring in a pre-tournament friendly, scored the opening goal after 18 minutes with a low left-foot drive which creeped inside the near post. Wesley Sneijder wrapped the game up for the Netherlands with a calmly taken side-footed finish after Dirk Kuyt beat Mucha in the Slovakia goal to a long ball and squared to his midfield comrade. Slovakia, whose 3-2 win eliminated the defending champions Italy in the Group stages, was always in contention. Robert Vittek, who got two against Italy, wasted the Dutch’s best chance to level with the score at 1-0 with only 20 minutes remaining. Freed on the edge of the Dutch box, Vittek could only fire straight at Dutch ‘keeper Steklenberg. Slovakia did get a consolation in the last minute of the game when Vittek won and scored a penalty, his fourth goal of these finals, but it was the last kick of the game. The Netherlands will face either Brazil or Chile, who meet later Monday, in the last-eight. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
