First Baseman Branyan Heads Back To Mariners In Deal With Tribe

Posted: 27 Jun 2010 02:19 PM PDT

Cincinnati, OH, United States (AHN) – The Cleveland Indians traded first baseman Russell Branyan to the Seattle Mariners for a couple of prospects Saturday night, according to published reports.

Branyan, 34, was reportedly told after Cleveland's loss vs. the Cincinnati Reds that he would return to his old club.

With the Mariners last season, Branyan collected 31 homers with 76 runs scored in 116 games, but Seattle decided not re-sign him.

Cleveland could send another player to Seattle for the deal or absorb Branyan's $2 million contract. The Indians receive Triple-A outfielder Ezequiel Carrera and Class-A shortstop Juan Diaz in exchange.

“It’s no secret that we’ve been pursuing a bat for some time,” Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik told MLB.com. “The opportunity to consummate a deal presented itself today. In Russell, we have added a bat that can help bolster our offense.

“With three-plus months to play, we want to give our team every opportunity to be as productive as possible this season, while not harming the long-term plan for the franchise."

Branyan started the season on the disabled due to a bulging disk in his lower back. He worked his way back into Cleveland's lineup, and batted .263 with 10 homers, 24 RBI and had a .819 OPS in 52 games this season before the transaction.

Branyan began his big-league career with the Tribe in 1998-2002. He has spent time with the Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, and the St. Louis Cardinals.
