World Cup: Defending World Champions Italy Ousted With Loss To Slovakia

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 10:52 AM PDT

Johannesburg, South Africa (AHN) – Defending World Cup Champions Italy fell at the first hurdle in their defense of the crown.

A 3-2 defeat at the hands of Slovakia eliminated the nation from the 2010 tournament with Paraguay and Slovakia advancing through to the last-16.

Italy, described as the worst ever reigning World Champions to defend a crown, wildly under-performed in South Africa, drawing 1-1 with Paraguay and minnows New Zealand.

In the end Italy finished bottom of a group it was expected to win, below even New Zealand which will feel hard-done-by to be exiting the competition without losing a game.

Robert Vittek gave Slovakia a 25th minute lead with an excellent finish from 20 yards across the Italian goalkeeper Marchetti.

The ace frontman then doubled Slovakia’s lead, poking home a shot with 20 minutes remaining.

It also made Vittek the top goalscorer in Slovakian history.

Antonio Di Natale gave Italy hope with less than 10 minutes remaining when he nudged home a rebound, a goal which sparked a small scuffle as the tension almost got the better of the sides.

Fabio Quagliarella thought he equalized the contest, but English official Darren Cann correctly ruled the Italian to be offside with only four minutes to go.

The match looked settled as the game moved towards injury-time when Slovakia substitute Kamil Kopunek lifted the ball over Marchetti to make it 3-1.

Quagliarella was having none of it though and after 92 minutes his delicate chip made it 3-2 in a remarkable game.

Iit was too little too late from the defending champions which follows fellow 2006 finalists France on the first plane back to Europe.

Paraguay drew 0-0 with minnows New Zealand in the other Group F match.

Paraguay advances into the last-16 as group winners and face the runners-up of Group E, likely to be one of Japan or Denmark.

Slovakia will face likely Group E winners Netherlands.

Isner Wins Longest Tennis Match Ever Over Mahut; Tops Foe In 11-Hour Marathon

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 10:51 AM PDT

Wimbledon, United Kingdom (AHN) – Talk about a marathon match.

John Isner and Nicolas Mahut interlocked in a mighty tennis duel Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Wimbledon in a contest that lasted over 11 grueling hours, easily the longest match in the sport’s history.

Isner barely outlasted Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68.

The pair split the first four sets Tuesday before the match was called due to darkness, with the same thing occurring Wednesday at the 9 hour, 58 minute mark.

The fifth set, played Wednesday ended in a deadlock of 59 games each, with either opponent failing to get the decisive two-game advantage to close out the match.

They played “only” 20 more games Thursday morning before Isner summoned enough strength for a pair of winners to finally break Mahut’s awesome serve to win the match.

Isner, a Greensboro, N.C. native, is seeded No. 23 at the event, while the Frenchman Mahut was unseeded.

Isner collected a new record for service aces with 111, while Mahut toppled the century mark at 103.

“Nothing like this will ever happen again, ever,” an exhausted Isner told the BBC with ESPN mikes listening in Wednesday. “I’d like to see the stats, see what the ace count looks like.”

Beyond the stats were two remarkable warriors who go down in the record books together.

The 25-year-old Byfuglien, whose clutch performance and five game-winning goals helped the 'Hawks capture the Stanley Cup, was dealt to Atlanta along with defenseman Brent Sopel, forward Ben Eager and minor league prospect Akim Aliu.

In exchange, the Thrashers gave up a first round pick (24th overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, the 54th pick.

Chicago will also receive veteran center Marty Reasoner, forward Joey Crabb and prospect Jeremy Morin.

The first and second round draft picks Chicago acquired in the blockbuster deal were received by the Thrashers from the Devils in a February trade that sent Ilya Kovalchuck to New Jersey.

Nats Pitching Phenom Strasburg Excels Again Despite Defeat

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 08:52 AM PDT

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – After setting a record for strikeouts in his first three starts, Nationals pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg withstood a scorching summer afternoon at Nationals Park and shattered another mark in his fourth outing despite a 1-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals Thursday.

It marked the first loss for the 21-year-old Strasburg (2-1), who recorded his 41st strikeout in his fourth major league start, breaking the mark previously held by Herb Score.

Score fanned 40 in his first four major league starts for Cleveland in 1955.

The Nats' number one overall pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft already held the record for most strikeouts over his first three starts with 32.

Strasburg allowed one run on a career-high nine hits and fanned nine without issuing a walk in Wednesday’s start.

It marked the third time in four starts the Nats hard-hitting pitcher never got to ball four on any batter.

The astonishing Strasburg hurled 95 pitches, 75 for strikes.

He also lowered his ERA to 1.78.

Strasburg recorded his first Major League hit, reaching base for the first time after grounding a single into left field in the third off winning pitcher Brian Bannister (7-5).

With the lack of run support starting to become a recurring theme in Strasburg's young career, he might just aspire to continue honing his hitting skills.

Strasburg's hit accounted for one-sixth of the total six hits of the Nationals, who despite winning the three-game set against the Royals, have dropped seven of nine.

His counterpart, Bannister, pitched six scoreless innings for Kansas City, which ended a five-game losing skid. The Royals right-hander allowed only five hits and two walks while striking out four.

Taurasi Enjoying Terrific All-Around Season For Mercury

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 08:49 AM PDT

Phoenix, AZ, United States (AHN) – Phoenix Mercury forward Diana Taurasi continues to fill in the box score, as she aims for her second consecutive WNBA MVP award.

The 28-year old Taurasi remains in the driver’s seat for another MVP run with an impressive line of statistics: 23.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3 assists per game.

Taurasi, the 2009 MVP winner, has been lauded for her all-around game and leadership on the court – a vital ingredient to the Mercury's success in the past three years.

Drafted first overall in 2004, the former UConn Huskies star immediately stood above her class and emerged as one of the league's do-it-all players.

Taurasi teamed up with then-teammate and current NY Liberty star Cappie Pondexter to help the Mercury win its first WNBA title in 2007.

In 2009, Taurasi joined WNBA great Cynthia Cooper as the only players to capture the regular-season scoring title, season MVP, the WNBA finals MVP, and a WNBA title after leading Mercury to its second WNBA in championship in three years.

In the past two games, Taurasi dropped 39 and 24 points in a losing effort to San Antonio and Connecticut respectively.

Although the Mercury (5-7) is 5.5 games behind Western Conference and league-leading Seattle Storm, Taurasi is confident they can still contend for the title this season.

South African Tourism Emerges Ultimate Winner From FIFA World Cup

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 08:46 AM PDT

Johannesburg, South Africa (AHN) – By spending 51 percent of the $128 million total tourist spending in South Africa, British tourists have become the biggest spenders during the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2010.

According to consumer transactions tracked during the period, the VISA company found that between June 1 and 20, visitors from the U.K., the U.S., Australia, France and Brazil spent most of their money on accommodation, restaurants, retail and transport.

The figure is up by more than half of last year's consumer transactions during the same period, which was $83 million. In addition, card purchases in South Africa since the World Cup began on June 11 have jumped 80 percent.

With both England and the U.S. set to play in the second round of the tournament, South Africa is all set to cash in as more visitors from these countries are likely to pour in to cheer their teams and the present ones are sure to extend their stay in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the South African Department of Home Affairs announced that as many as 682,507 tourists came to the country for the World Cup. According to the Minister of Home Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, more than 1.7 million people were recorded moving in and out of the country, out of which 916,097 were arrivals.

Even the South African Tourism Chief Executive, Thandiwe January-McLean, has said that the football tournament has done well for South African tourism, promoting the country on the world map like never before. He said, "At any one time, more than 400 million people are watching the game. The exposure has been great for us. The World Cup helped us do away with stereotypes about the country."

The department has been receiving feedback from the tourists and most of it is positive, say the officials.

The general sentiment throughout the country as well as in the corridors of government is that after organizing the Lions (rugby) Tour, the Confederations Cup and the Indian Premier League last year, South Africa has consolidated its credibility as a reliable and interesting sports destination of the world with this year's FIFA World Cup.

Live Eng vs Aus 2nd ODI Cricket Score: Australia seeks revenge against England in second ODI

Posted: 24 Jun 2010 12:41 AM PDT

Eng vs Aus

Eng vs Aus

England seems all set to take on Australia in the second ODI of the series here at Sophia Gardens.

Confident after the first ODI victory at Rosebowl, the hosts would be looking forward to claim the second game as well and march towards securing the series.

Australia seems to have become less competent compared to the rivals who have improved their performance day by day in recent times.

Out of the past 35 encounters in the decade the Aussies have claimed 25, but the trend appears to be getting reversed now.

The English had chased the Australian total successfully in the first one dayer, with about twenty four balls to spare. Thanks to the ton by Eoin Morgan, though England is completely cautious of relying on a one man show.

Captain Andrew Strauss too stressed that, “we’re not getting carried away but it’s good to get the series off to a good start.”

Meanwhile, Aussie captain Ponting has remarked, “A loss generally brings the best out of us”. To what extent his words would be proved needs to be seen, especially in the wake of weak displays from the team.

Shane Watson shall remain their main bowler, though the team misses the presence of Shaun Tait. New comer Josh Hazlewood is also expected to offer his share of wickets at the second ODI.
