Portugal vs Korea Dpr: Portugal hopes to open its account against North Korea Posted: 20 Jun 2010 11:09 PM PDT Portugal vs Korea Dpr Today's match within the 'death group' G of FIFA world Cup 2010 shall see Portugal taking on North Korea at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. Both the teams do not boast of an impressive history so far in the tournament. North Korea though put up a challenging display against Brazil, had finally gone down for 2-1. Portugal meanwhile ended up in a goalless draw against Ivory Coast. North Korea is very well aware of the fact that a victory can lead them to the second round of the world cup, alongwith Brazil. The strategy would once again be defense centered as they did against the Brazilians. The players to watch out for in the Korean squad would be Jong Tae Se (striker), also nicknamed as the “Asian Wayne Rooney" and Ji Yun Nam (midfielder) who scored against Brazil. Portugal on the other hand is desperate to shake the net especially after the drought in the opening game. They would be extra cautious of the Korean defense and may not commit a mistake of underestimating the rivals. The team shall look up to poster boy Christiano Ronaldo to open his account, who is well known for his striking abilities. Danny, Simao, and Liedson are also expected to assist Ronaldo in scoring for the team. The last time both teams met was in the quarterfinals of the 1966 World Cup, where North Korea was defeated by Portugal 5-3, despite an earlier 3-0 lead by the former. |

Ohio State Football Recruit Shot, Seriously Injured Posted: 20 Jun 2010 11:56 AM PDT Youngstown, OH, United States (AHN) – Incoming Ohio State freshman Jamel Turner is in serious condition after a shooting incident Saturday morning in Youngstown, Ohio. The 18-year old Turner sustained gunshot wounds after an unknown individual fired at him at 3:23 a.m. Saturday. Multiple sources indicated Turner is being monitored at St. Elizabeth Health Center, which has not yet updated the teen's current condition. Youngstown Police also reported the death of a 17-year old girl, who was inside a house when the shooting happened. It marks the second time Turner was shot after an earlier shooting incident on April 17, in which the football player only received minor wounds. Ohio State recruited Turner in February after a productive football stints at Youngstown Ursuline High School and Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy. Football scouts described Turner as an above-average defensive end, but previous involvement in guns and drugs made him a risk for college football programs. Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel extended his prayers for Turner. “I’m so sad to hear of Jamel’s misfortune." Tressel told Buckeyextra.com Sunday "I have not communicated with Jamel, but am certainly praying for him at this time.” Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Lineman Seymour Signs Franchise Tender With Raiders Posted: 20 Jun 2010 04:31 AM PDT Kate Rowland – AHN Sports Reporter Alameda, CA, United States (AHN) – Defensive lineman Richard Seymour signed a $12.4 million exclusive franchise tag tender with Oakland Saturday, putting all Raiders’ veterans under contract for next season. The team announced Seymour’s signing on its website, adding that it would begin signing rookies soon. By placing the tag on Seymour in February, the Raiders guaranteed Seymour a salary of at least $12.4 million, the average salary earned last year by the five highest-paid defensive ends in the NFL. The Raiders acquired Seymour just before the start of last season by sending a 2011 first-round pick to New England. He was paid around $3.7 million last season. Seymour was drafted sixth overall in 2001. He played on three Super Bowl winners with the Patriots, recording 39 career sacks, and was a Pro Bowl selection for five straight seasons from 2002. Dustin Johnson Controls U.S. Open, Tiger Lurking Five Shots Back Posted: 20 Jun 2010 04:31 AM PDT Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter Pebble Beach, CA, United States (AHN) – Young Dustin Johnson is the perfect combination of power and precision. He is also the leader going into the final 18 holes of the 110th U.S. Open at storied Pebble Beach and the 66 he shot on Saturday came amidst the roars that went up for a revitalized Tiger Woods. Johnson, who can overpower golf courses, will take a three-shot lead into the final round over Graeme McDowell. Johnson’s near-perfect 66 put him at six-under par 207 for three trips around the scenic Pebble Beach layout. McDowell was steady and held the lead most of the day until he made back-to-back bogeys at the 16th and 17th holes. While Johnson and McDowell battled for the lead, there was a major happening nine holes ahead of them. Tiger Woods, who has struggled with his private life, struggled with his golf life, came back to life on the back nine Saturday. Woods found his roar and produced the kind of shots that have won him 14 majors. By the 18th hole, he had worked his way back to even par for the tournament. He stood in 18 fairway, blocked slightly by a small fairway cypress tree. He then produced a shot that was vintage Tiger Woods. Woods hit what he described as “a holy three-wood.” His shot started left along the sea wall and faded back to the green, landed just short and rolled up 22 feet from the hole. Two putts later he was in the clubhouse with a 66 that was formed by his five-under par 31 on the back nine. Still, if Woods is going to win his 15th major, he will have to do something on Sunday that he has never done in his amazing career — come from behind to win in a major. Johnson will start the final 18 with a three-shot lead over McDowell and will play with him again on Sunday. Woods is five shots behind him, Gregory Havret of France was at even par 213 with Ernie Els and will play in the next-to-last group with Woods. Phil Mickelson, who hoped to match some of his superb shots from Friday, found all sorts of difficulties in the third round. His ball striking was off and he got off to a miserable bogey-bogey start. “I didn’t play well today,” Mickelson said after his round of 73 that could have been worse and should have been better. “I fought hard,” he said, “I had to make some ridiculous up-and-downs.” Mickelson’s short game kept him in touch with the leaders, although at one-over, he will need another round like his Friday effort. He’ll play the final 18 with Ernie Els, who shot 72. If anyone is going to have a chance over the final 18, they’ll need for Johnson to falter. But the 6-4 shot-maker who is longer than any of the contenders, was totally in control of his game. He hit a great shot at the difficult 17th, then holed a 12-foot putt with three feet of break for a birdie that put him two in front of McDowell. He then pulled out driver on the tee at the par five 18th. “Are you kidding me?” asked NBC’s Johnny Miller when Johnson made his choice. Johnson wasn’t kidding. He ripped his drive long right into the light rough then smashed a six-iron from 221 yards onto the green. Two putts later he had his 66 and the lead. Johnson got his day rolling on the short, 284-yard par four fourth hole. After three opening pars, he hit his tee shot onto the fourth green, eight feet from the hole and made the putt for eagle two. From there, it was an amazing display of power, short game and accurate iron shots. His putter was solid as well. “I love playing here,” he said afterward. Indeed, he has won the last two regular tour events at Pebble Beach and has an air of confidence. “Today was a good day,” he understated. “I had some loose drives on the final nine but I’m very confident in the driver. I like to hit it.” He showed no weaknesses for the most part. He was calm and looked the part of a man ready to win his first major. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |

Court McGee Wins Season 11 Of Ultimate Fighter Posted: 20 Jun 2010 04:31 AM PDT Shawn Krest – AHN Sports Correspondent Las Vegas, NV, United States (AHN) – Court McGee submitted Kris McCray with a rear naked choke in the second round to win the championship of The Ultimate Fighter Season 11, Saturday night in Las Vegas. McGee dominated the bout with takedowns and top control. He took down McCray early in the first round, using a Greco-Roman throw to put McCray on his back. While on top, McGee landed a big left hand before McCray got back to his feet. A short time later, McGee got a second takedown using a similar Greco-Roman throw. He briefly got full mount, but McCray scrambled out before McGee could do any damage. Early in the second round, McGee got another takedown and managed to get into full mount. McCray held onto his head, preventing McGee from landing any solid punches from the position. McGee moved to back control, but McCray escaped before he could sink in leg hooks and attempt a choke. On their feet again, McGee got a shoot and slam takedown and managed to get a rear naked choke. McCray tapped out, giving McGee the championship at 3:41 of the second round. “The game plan was to hit him and move, and for him to try to take me down,” said McGee. “The shot was open, so I took it. Sometimes you just feel it when you’re in the cage, and man, I felt it.” McGee, who survived a heroin addiction years ago, became emotional after the bout. “I want to dedicate this fight to anyone that’s struggling today,” he said, breaking down into tears. “I love you all.” McGee also dedicated his win to his coach on The Ultimate Fighter, Chuck Liddell. McGee became the third Ultimate Fighter champion in Liddell’s two seasons coaching the show. McCray had Rich Franklin in his corner for the bout. Franklin replaced Tito Ortiz as coach late in the season. Ortiz posted on his Twitter feed that he was “not invited” to the finale. After passing up his “Team Ortiz” shorts for a generic “UFC” pair in his semifinal bout, McCray wore “Team Ortiz” trunks for the finale. McGee moved to 10-1 for his career. McCray lost for the first time in his career after five wins. Fights on the show do not count in the participants’ career records, since results are not made available to the public immediately afterward. In the co-main event, Matt Hamill defeated Keith Jardine by majority decision in a light heavyweight bout. Hamill was expected to have an advantage on the ground, but he was content standing up with Jardine for most of the bout. Jardine’s most successful round was the first, where he was able to keep Hamill at bay with kicks to the body and legs. Hamill attempted to jab his way in, but was not able to find the range in the first five minutes. In the second round, Hamill landed a nice head kick, then got the better of Jardine in an extended exchange between the two fighters that ended with Jardine inadvertently poked Hamill in the eye. The bout was stopped briefly for Hamill to recover, and referee Herb Dean deducted a point from Jardine. The controversial penalty did not end up making a difference in the result of the fight. Hamill was able to rock Jardine with a big left hand and head kick, opening a large cut between Jardine’s eyes that bled heavily for the rest of the fight. In the third round, Hamill repeatedly stunned Jardine with lefts and uppercuts before tiring near the end, allowing Jardine to rally. Two judges scored the bout 29-27 in Hamill’s favor, overruling the final judge who had it a 28-28 draw. AHN’s unofficial scorecard agreed with the majority. Jardine lost his fourth straight fight and fifth in his last six to fall to 15-8-1. Hamill moved to 9-2. In his last bout, Hamill fought in the Ultimate Fighter Season 10 finale, winning by disqualification over Jon “Bones” Jones. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Redskins Strengthen Line By Acquiring Jammal Brown Posted: 20 Jun 2010 04:31 AM PDT
The Redskins made their move to toughen up their offensive line unit by enlisting the 6-foot-6, 313 pound Brown, a stalwart blocker for Drew Brees prior to missing last season after having hip and hernia surgery during training camp. . The Redskins acquired Brown by shipping their 2011 third- and fourth-round draft pick – depending on the pick to be sent to the Philadelphia Eagles as part of the trade involving quarterback Donovan McNabb. Right tackle Artis Hicks had no complaints about the decision to bring Brown in Washington, saying Brown’s acquisition was indeed a great move for the organization. Despite creating more competition for playing time on the line, Hicks said more depth on the line is good for the team. Acquired by the Redskins last March, Hicks looks to compete with Mike Williams for the right guard starting role when training camp begins this summer. .”Well, nothing is etched in stone, but it looks like that’s where I’m headed,” Hicks told the Washington Post Saturday. “I know Mike Williams is going to want to stay there, too, so it’s going to be about competition. Undrafted in 2002, Hicks has developed into a versatile player with the ability to cover the tackle or guard position Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Portland Creates Rally For LeBron; Fans Want `King` To Join Blazers Posted: 20 Jun 2010 04:31 AM PDT
Blazers fan and event organizer David Chitsazan said a rally will be held Sunday around Memorial Coliseum and the Rose Garden to show their interest in acquiring the reigning two-time MVP. “We will remain on that city block,” Chitsazan told Oregon Live.com via e-mail. “The event was approved by City of Portland Special Events Coordinator Allison Madsen.” The event also follows a similar gathering in Akron, Ohio as fans there feted ‘The King’ in his hometown Saturday perhaps in an effort to get him to re-sign with the Cavs. LeBron showed near the event and said a few words of thanks to the crowd, but did not address his impending free-agency. Speculation on James playing for the Blazers next season erupted after veteran NBA writer Sam Smith induced a sign-and-trade scenario involving James and Blazers centers Joel Przybilla and former No.1 pick Greg Oden. James will likely opt out from his final contact years with the Cavaliers on July 1 to become the alpha-dog of an incredibly talented free agency class, which also includes Dirk Nowitzki, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and Joe Johnson.
