Heckler Tries To Spoil Armstrong’s Third-Place Finish In Luxembourg Posted: 06 Jun 2010 01:02 PM PDT Luxembourg, United Kingdom (AHN) – Lance Armstrong heard jeers from a heckler after finishing third overall in the Tour of Luxembourg Sunday. A fan belted out “liar…cheat” when Armstrong moved behind the main pack, and the cyclist was heckled later when the all-rounder was doing interviews with reporters. Armstrong retaliated by yelling out into the crowd “Come and do that to my face.” Armstrong, 38, never tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, but was accused in May by his former teammate, Floyd Landis, of doping. After the hoo-ha, Armstrong focused on the last four days of the race. “It’s been a good four days. I felt strong," said Armstrong, who crashed at May's Tour of California. "Any time you can win a race, be on a podium, in preparation, it’s important. I wouldn’t have thought I would ride so strong this week.” Armstrong will look to step-up his game for the arduous Tour de France and the Tour of Switzerland slated in June. “There are longer climbs, longer time trials,” he added. “I think we have to make a good progression from here, to Switzerland and the Tour.” Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |

Nadal Blasts Soderling; Regains French Open Throne Posted: 06 Jun 2010 11:57 AM PDT Paris, France (AHN) – Spain's Rafael Nadal successfully reclaimed his French Open title Sunday, firing a succession of brilliant shots to defeat Sweden's Robin Soderling 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 at Court Philippe Chatrier in Paris, France. Nadal captured his fifth French Open title in dominating fashion, as he recorded seven aces and 28 winners to overwhelm Soderling in straight sets. Soderling, who reached his second straight French Open final, tallied seven aces and 45 winners but committed a devastating 45 unforced errors in the match. As expected, Nadal came out aggressively with his sharp crosscourt and forehand volleys to overcome Soderling's power advantage. Soderling showed resilience in the third set with his own run, but Nadal sealed the victory with key shots in the 10th game. With the win, Nadal finally exacted his revenge on Soderling after losing to the Swede in the fourth round of the same tournament last year. The 24-year old Nadal nabbed his seventh career Grand Slam title and overtook rival Roger Federer for No. 1 in the ATP world rankings, to be released Monday. Terrell Owens, Free-Agent Wideout, Addresses Perception He’s A ‘Cancer’ On Teams Posted: 06 Jun 2010 09:48 AM PDT New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Wide receiver Terrell Owens made public his feelings about being unsigned Saturday, quoting his image as a “cancer” on squads as the main reason behind his jobless position. The 36-year old Owens has remained unsigned since the free agency period began early March. Owens reportedly blamed his "hated persona" as the main cause of his failure to find a team willing to take his service next season. Owens insisted his cancer image was far from his true personality as a teammate and a person. “The teams I’ve been on, if you ask in that locker room how I’ve been as a teammate and as a person, it’s contradictory to what’s been displayed out there.” Owens told NFL Network Friday. Reports indicated the Cincinnati and the Baltimore are the most likely destinations for the veteran wide receiver, who excelled during stints with the Cowboys and Eagles, but drew criticism for comments about his quarterbacks. However, the two teams are apparently committed to other wideouts: Antonio Bryant for the Bengals, and Anquan Boldin and Donte’ Stallworth for the Ravens. Owens also confirmed he and quarterback Donovan McNabb are open to a reunion in Washington after several years of starring together in Philly. The pair never won a title, though, and TO seemed to blame McNabb at times for the team’s shortcomings. “That was something I welcome with open arms, and he as well. If that was a situation to come about and that would happen, we know what we could do on the football field together.” Owens told NFL Network regarding a possible reunion with McNabb. Rafael Nadal beats Soderling; won 5th French Open Title Posted: 06 Jun 2010 09:43 AM PDT Paris, France (AHN) – Spain’s Rafael Nadal made himself at home another time in Paris, getting the French Open title for the 5th time. He handled Robin Soderling 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 Sunday avenging a fourth round loss to the same foe last year. Soderling leads the next tier of players behind Nadal and Federer, and will take advantage of a slip in play by either player. Soderling, who defeated Federer in the quarterfinals and outlasted Tomas Berdych in the semis, ran into a determined Nadal in the final. Nadal, a perfect 22-0 on clay this year, will attempt to win the second straight Wimbledon crown he has competed for. The soon-to-be top ranked player in the world, had to skip the 2009 event due to knee trouble. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
NBA Finals: Gasol Fumes Over How Comments On Garnett Portrayed In Media Posted: 06 Jun 2010 06:14 AM PDT Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol was reportedly not pleased with the way the media portrayed his comments on Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, a major sports media outlet posted aturday. “Sometimes I extend my answers too long,” Gasol told ESPN Saturday. “Maybe I shouldn’t do that. I should be shorter with my answers and don’t give away just anything so it can’t be manipulated that way and used.” During a news conference Friday night, Gasol said he noticed Garnett's first step was not as explosive it was in 2008, but insisted the Celtics forward remains a terrific player. Gasol was superb in the series opener Thursday, recording 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 3 blocks for the Lakers. Gasol said the media was "pathetic" by exaggerating or playing up his comments. Meanwhile, Lakers coach Phil Jackson recognized Garnett's solid game Thursday and expected the former NBA MVP to come out strong in Sunday's Game 2. The 34-year old Garnett recorded a sub-par 16 points and 4 boards in a 102-89 loss to the Lakers. He was especially ineffective in the first half, when the Lakers built a double-digit lead. AHN Ringside: Roach Protégé Martirosyan Tops Home Favorite Greene At ‘Stadium Slugfest’ Posted: 06 Jun 2010 06:13 AM PDT New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Freddie Roach-trained champion Vanes Martirosyan retained his 154-pound super welterweight belt Saturday, taking down New York-based southpaw Joe Greene by unanimous decision in 10 rounds. The fight was billed as the co-main event along with Yuri Foreman-Miguel Cotto at "Stadium Slugfest," the first boxing match at the new Yankee Stadium. The Armenian-born Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KOs), a protégé of legendary trainer Freddie Roach, lost a point and heard a cascade of boos in the sixth round for hitting Greene below the belt. But it wasn’t enough to outweigh Martirosyan’s speed and accuracy. "When you have the best around you – the best trainer, the best promoter, the best everything – you have to be the best," said Martirosyan at the postfight conference. Greene (22-1, 14 KOs) had the support of the crowd and wore Yankees boxing shorts to reaffirm his hometown pride. He caught Martirosyan with a series of combinations early on, but couldn’t maintain a steady attack through the later rounds. The final scorecard: Tom Shrek, 96-93; Julie Lederman, 98-91; Billy Costello 96-93. AHN’s unofficial scorecard had it 97-93 in favor of Martirosyan. Keselowski Wins Nationwide Race At Nashville Posted: 06 Jun 2010 06:12 AM PDT Gladeville, TN, United States (AHN) – Nashville Superspeedway had a special place in Brad Keselowski’s heart because it’s the first place that he won a NASCAR Nationwide Series race. Saturday night he returned to glory when he drove to a win in the Federated Auto Parts 300 there. “We had an awesome car and so did Carl (Edwards). Carl had a real good long run car, but I thought that we were better on restarts and it paid off for us. Clean air was so important and we drove off after we got the lead back,” said Keselowski. “Whoever got out front after that last caution was going to win the race. A great night here in Nashville and I just love this race track. It's a fun place for me and I love coming here and winning. This is a special win for sure.” Keselowski extended his points lead from one to 196 over Kyle Busch with Carl Edwards 277 back in third. Edwards finished second in the race and Paul Menard was third, while pole-sitter Justin Allgaier ran fourth and Mike Bliss fifth. "Sort of a rough night despite finishing fourth. The Verizon Wireless Dodge Charger was really fast early and unfortunately got caught a lap down when we made a green flag start and the caution come out. That's what can happen when you make green flag stops,” said Allgaier. “We fought back from 18th and moved all the way up to second with under 40 laps to go. I got bounced around out there pretty good tonight. Our fenders got beat in a bit and really changed the characteristics of the car. That's just racing.” Keselowski, Edwards, Menard and Michael McDowell are all running both Cup and Nationwide races this weekend. Keselowski qualified 24th and slowly worked his way to the front. He was one of several drivers to stay on the track under the race’s final caution and then he pulled away for the win. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Briscoe Holds Off Danica At Texas; Wins Firestone 550K Posted: 06 Jun 2010 06:11 AM PDT Fort Worth, TX, United States (AHN) – Ryan Briscoe may have come up short the last couple of years but Saturday night he found Victory Circle at Texas Motor Speedway when he held off Danica Patrick to win the Firestone 550K. Briscoe started from the pole, but in the end he had to fend off a charging Patrick, who has dipped a toe into the NASCAR Nationwide Series waters this season part-time. “It was pretty crazy out there. There was also a lot of tire management too. I really had to work with the tools in the car to keep a good balance throughout the stint. That really made the race fun,” said Briscoe. “Danica got by us and I didn’t want to make any aggressive moves and block. I gained some momentum on the next lap, used the push-to-pass and was able to pass her out of Turn 4 and into Turn 1. She gave us a real run for our money tonight. It was fun racing side-by-side with her.” Marco Andretti managed a finish of third for the second straight race, while 2008 Texas winner Scott Dixon ran fourth. Dario Franchitti, fresh off of his second Indianapolis 500 triumph, placed fifth. “It was a good weekend last weekend in Indy and it was a good weekend here in Texas. Sometimes the little victories that I have throughout the season are not necessarily obvious on the track,” said Patrick. “Maybe there in other aspects of what I’m doing, winning little victories here and there to get everything in line to perform from top to bottom on race day.” “I’ve been working hard all season. It’s just really nice to have a result to show how hard I’ve been working and how hard the team has been working as well.” Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
