Kentucky Not Blue After NBA Talent Drain; ‘Cats Still Powerhouse Posted: 25 Jun 2010 12:08 PM PDT Lexington, KY, United States (AHN) – The University of Kentucky is already pumped up for another terrific basketball season, despite losing five players to the NBA Draft Thursday at Madison Square Garden. Kentucky, arguably the most storied basketball program in the nation, made history Thursday by sending five first-round draft picks to the NBA. Kentucky head coach John Calipari was ecstatic seeing five of his players taken in the first round of historic draft. “For a program that makes history pretty regularly, Thursday night was truly a historic evening,” Calipari told Fox News.com. The Washington Wizards made point guard John Wall the first Wildcat to be taken first overall from the program, while the Sacramento Kings drafted big man DeMarcus Cousins fifth overall in the draft. Three other Wildcats were also taken in the first-round: power forward Patrick Patterson (14th overall by the Houston Rockets), guard Eric Bledsoe (18th overall by the Oklahoma Thunder, traded to the L.A Clippers), center Daniel Orton (29th overall by the Orlando Magic). After a successful draft night, Kentucky faces another season with high expectations, as several McDonald’s (All Americans) and top-100 picks enter the program next season. Kentucky will have the nation's top high school player Brandon Knight next season and also received commitments from 2011 class top-prospects Michael Gilchrist and Marquis Teague. NHL Board Of Governors Approves More Serious Penalties For Blind-Side Hits Posted: 25 Jun 2010 12:06 PM PDT New York, NY, United States (AHN) – The National Hockey League Board of Governors today approved a rule change that provides for a major penalty and a game misconduct for a "lateral or blindside hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principle point of contact." The rule change was proposed by the League's 30 Club General Managers and was approved by the Competition Committee before being forwarded to the Board for ratification. Rule 48, "Illegal Check to the Head," also empowers a referee, at his discretion, to assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the penalized player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head. Any player who incurs a total of two game misconducts under this rule, in either the regular season or playoffs, will be suspended automatically for his team's next game. For each subsequent game misconduct penalty, the automatic suspension will be increased by one game. If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline also can be applied. NHL Entry Draft Held In California For First Time Posted: 25 Jun 2010 12:05 PM PDT Staples Center, Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – The NHL Entry Draft coming to California for the first time is the latest milestone for the growth of hockey in the Golden State. The Los Angeles Kings and California Seals brought the NHL here in 1967, but it can be said that hockey really didn’t arrive in California until Aug. 9, 1988, the day of Wayne Gretzky’s monumental trade to the Kings. In their first season with Gretzky, the Kings improved from 68 points to 91, and won a playoff series for the first time since 1982. In 1990-91, they won the only division title in club history and finished with 102 points. Two seasons later, they had their magical run to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final. More than 20 years later, the reverberations of the Gretzky Trade still can be seen at this year’s Entry Draft. Medicine Hat Tigers right wing Emerson Etem, No. 8 on NHL Central Scouting’s ranking of North American skaters, grew up in nearby Long Beach. Five players in Central Scouting’s top 100 North American skaters hail from the Golden State — Etem; No. 32 Beau Bennett of Torrance (Penticton, BCHL); No. 51 Jason Zucker of Newport Beach (US Under-18, USHL); No. 68 Jacob Fallon of Riverside (Indiana, USHL); and No. 88 Taylor Aronson of Placentia (Portland, WHL). Those five are one more than hockey-centric Massachusetts (four) and just one fewer than Michigan (six). Rancho Santa Margarita native Jonathan Blum became the first California-born and -trained first-round draft pick when the Nashville Predators took him No. 23 in the 2007 Entry Draft, and California players have dotted the draft list over the last few years. Etem, who is expected to go in the top 15, could replace Blum as the highest-drafted California-born player. “Wayne’s influence created a demand for ice time,” said Pat Brisson, a Los Angeles-based agent who represents top NHL players like Sidney Crosby and Patrick Kane. “I saw it firsthand. I was here. Youth hockey took off. … And now you see kids born in 1990, 1991, ’92 or ’93 in L.A. are now going to come into the NHL draft because of what Wayne did.” Over time, more and better ice facilities were built, and youth hockey, which had been a near non-entity, began taking off. According to USA Hockey, there were 8,094 youth players (through 18 years old) registered in California for the 2009-10 season. Another 12,310 adults were registered through USA Hockey. The Los Angeles Jr. Kings have 16 teams under their umbrella and are now members of the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League, which is scouted heavily by the USHL and top collegiate programs in the U.S. The Anaheim Junior Ducks have 14 teams under their umbrella and the San Jose Junior Sharks have 16 teams. World Cup: Brazil-Portugal Draw, But Advance; Ivory Coast Out Despite Win Posted: 25 Jun 2010 12:01 PM PDT Durban, South Africa (AHN) – Brazil and Portugal go through to the last-16 of the 2010 World Cup after a dour 0-0 in Durban. Ivory Coast beat North Korea 3-0 but follow that nation home. The game, billed before the tournament as one of the top ties of the group stage, was a dour affair completely lacking in the creative flair both sides are famed for. Brazilian Nilmar hit a Portugese post just after the half hour in the game’s most exciting moment, but it was a clash better forgotten. The draw was enough to see Brazil go through as group winners, while Portugal follow in second place. Both will eagerly view the conclusion to Group H later Friday to see who they will face next out of Spain, Switzerland and Chile. In the other game, Ivory Coast beat North Korea 3-0, but it wasn’t enough after their defeat to Brazil earlier in the round left it playing catch-up. Giants Rookie Safety Chad Jones In Critical Condition; Involved In Car Accident Posted: 25 Jun 2010 11:56 AM PDT New Orleans, LA, United States (AHN) – New York Giants rookie safety Chad Jones is reportedly in critical condition at a New Orleans hospital after being involved in an early morning car accident. WWL-TV reported Jones had “a fractured left leg and had arteries and nerves exposed,” and underwent surgery at 10:15 a.m. about five hours after the crash. The Giants are aware of the incident and indicated they are looking into it before commenting publicly. LSU head football coach Les Miles twittered, “Just got news about Chad Jones’ car accident. We are praying for Chad and his family. Keep him in your prayers.” Jones, 21, starred in both football and baseball for the Tigers, helping both programs win national titles and becoming just one of two NCAA athletes to accomplish the feat—teammate Jared Mitchell was the other. Big Fishing Prize Off Hook In North Carolina Due To Lack Of License Posted: 25 Jun 2010 11:48 AM PDT Morehead, NC, United States (AHN) – Andy Thomossan blew the chance of winning $900,000 in a major fishing tournament in North Carolina after being disqualified earlier in the week for hiring an unlicensed mate. Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament officials disqualified Thomossan and his crew Monday after they found out his mate, Peter Wann, was missing a recreational fishing license – an important requirement in the fishing tournament. Big Rock president Randy Ramsey said Wann failed to pass the post-tournament lie detector test, forcing him to admit his license expired last July. Apparently, Wann's confession was enough grounds for the tournament officials to nullify Thomossan's win and award $999,453 instead to Ed Petrilli and his crew aboard the Carnivore of Cape Carteret. On June 14, the 63-year old Thomossan made a tournament record for catching an 883-pound marlin, which would have won him $1.2 million in prize money. Meanwhile, Petrilli and his licensed crew only nabbed a 528-pound blue marlin, but Thomossan's violation allowed them to raise their previous winnings($217,570) by $781,000. Thomossan insisted he had no idea Wann's license had already expired. “We didn’t do anything wrong,” Thomasson told the Jacksonville (N.C.) Daily News. “But one of our people did. He failed to get a fishing license, but we didn’t know it. He told us he had it. He didn’t. So you take a man for his word, you know?” Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |

Portugal vs Brazil World Cup Live: The much awaited clash of the titans Posted: 25 Jun 2010 05:36 AM PDT One of the much anticipated encounters at the FIFA world cup, the Brazil-Portugal match shall take place on Friday, 25th June, at Durban. The clash within the death group G shall seal the table toppers. Brazil has displayed its strength by thrashing Ivory Coast 3-1, while Portugal is credited with the mightiest win so far in the world cup after routing Korea DPR 7-0. Brazil has already made its way into the quarters, and need just one point to emerge group toppers. Portugal's chances are also high as only a loss to Brazil, coupled with a huge win for Ivory Coast against Korea can shatter their dreams. Maicon shall be the Brazilian trump card, while Portugal looks forward to Fabio Coentrao, and Benfica along with Ronaldo. Kaka remains Brazil's loss as he had been suspended following a red card in the previous game. Elano too may miss the game due to injury, along with Portugal's Deco. The past record appears impressive for both the teams, though Dunga's squad leads with a slight edge. Brazilian captain Lucio maintains this to be an important match and considers the rivals at par with themselves. Meanwhile, Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz asserted that his team shall remain focused on gaining the entry ticket into the final sixteen, than securing the top position in the group. |

Trail Blazers Fire GM Pritchard Just Prior To Draft Posted: 25 Jun 2010 01:06 AM PDT Kate Rowland – AHN Sports Reporter Portland, OR, United States (AHN) – The Portland Trail Blazers fired general manager Kevin Pritchard just before the NBA Entry Draft began, ending months of speculation that he had fallen out of favor with billionaire owner Paul Allen, according to The Oregonian website. Pritchard, in his sixth season with the Trail Blazers, was sequestered with the team until after the draft late Thursday. Portland confirmed his firing at the draft’s conclusion. Reports last week stated that Pritchard had been informed that a search firm had been hired to find his replacement, and he vowed to fight for his job. He was under contract through next season, with a team option for 2011-12. Pritchard joined the Blazers as director of player personnel in the early 2000s, and served as interim head coach when the Blazers fired coach Maurice Cheeks in 2005. He was promoted to general manager in 2007, and asked to turn the Blazers around from their “Jail Blazers” image of a team of troubled players who couldn’t stay out of trouble. Pritchard built a promising young team around guard Brandon Roy, who was named the league’s rookie of the year before becoming a three-time All-Star. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
