Virginia Tough: Hokies` Nosal Plays Despite Losing Top of Pinkie Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT AHN Sports Staff Blacksburg, VA, United States (AHN) – Virginia Tech junior offensive lineman Greg Nosal made perhaps the grittiest move in football Saturday after he decided to stay on the field despite losing the tip of his left pinkie. Nosal said the tip of his pinkie detached after the finger accidentally got caught inside the facemask of Virginia quarterback Tyrod Taylor in the second quarter of Saturday’s 45-21 victory over Central Michigan. However, despite the pain in his left pinkie, Nosal stayed on the field for three more plays before going to the locker room to check the injury inside his bloodied glove. Nosal said he thought the injury was just a bad cut and did not expect to see the part of his pinkie completely ripped off. After seeing the gruesome injury, Nosal approached the team’s trainer Mike Goforth to tape up the severed pinkie. Goforth and Virginia Tech coaching staff tried to find the detached part on the playing field but they ended up finding it in Nosal’s glove. Knowing the tip can still be attached, Nolan played into the fourth quarter after receiving a painkiller. Goforth, meanwhile, put the severed part on ice to prevent rapid decomposition. With the Hokies blowing out their opponents, Nosal returned to the locker room and let team surgeon Marc Seigel stitch up the finger. Hokies coach Frank Beamer lauded Nosal for his guts and determination to perform despite the severe pain. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Blazers` Oden Expects To Be All-Star; Camby To Retire After 2011-12 Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Phoenix, AZ, United States (AHN) – Former overall No. 1 pick Greg Oden, who has missed major playing time during the 2009-10 season due to injury, has reportedly vowed he will be an All-Star one day amid grumbling the Trail Blazers should have used their No. 1 pick on rising star Kevin Durant. Oden, 22, was taken No. 1 by Portland in 2007, while Durant, the Oklahoma City Thunder star, was picked second in the draft. Oden is on the mend following a surgery on a fractured left patella, which he sustained during a Dec. 5 game in 2009. It marked the second time the 7-foot, 285 pound Oden missed major playing time due to injury. Before he started his maiden NBA campaign in 2007, the former Ohio State standout had to undergo microfracture surgery on his ailing right knee, causing him to miss the entire season. He technically started his rookie season in 2008-09 because of the right knee injury. After being held scoreless and sustaining a foot injury in his NBA debut against the L.A. Lakers, Oden came back after missing two weeks, scoring his first NBA points against the Miami Heat in a Nov. 12, 2008 game. On January of 2009, Oden posted a career-high 24 points and 15 points vs. the Milwaukee Bucks. During the 2009-10 campaign, he matched his career-high 24 points and later set a new career-high for rebounds with 20 on a Dec. 1 contest. Oden averaged 15.2 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in five games prior to his latest injury in December of last year. Last season, Oden averaged 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.29 blocks in 21 contests. Oden, who dismissing negativity and vows to disprove his detractors, told FanHouse in an interview: “When I get out there 100 percent, everybody will see what kind of player I am.” “When I get 100 percent and I get to improve on the court, I feel I can be an All-Star,” he added. Meanwhile, Oden’s teammate and one of his most ardent supporters, Marcus Camby, who has had his share of injuries in the past, could retire after the 2011-12 season. The veteran journeyman was recognized with the NBA’s top defensive player of the year honors during the 2006-07 NBA season after leading the league in blocked shots per game. However, Camby says he could retire when his current deal expires, RealGM.com reported. The 36-year-old Camby, selected to four All-Defensive teams, signed a two-year extension on April 2010. “I’ll finish out my contract. I don’t know (after that),” Camby told RealGM.com. “It depends on how my body feels. It depends on the situation that I’m in. If I’m in the rotation, then I’m fine with that. I think I’ve got too much pride to be the 11th or 12th man.” Camby played in 23 tilts for Portland in the 2009-10 season after being traded by Clippers, his fourth NBA team, last February. Tailback Caleb King The Latest Arrest At Troubled Georgia Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter Athens, GA, United States (AHN) – Georgia Bulldogs tailback Caleb King was arrested early Monday on a warrant for failure to appear in court for a Walton County speeding charge. King is the 11th Georgia player to be arrested since January and the fourth in the last two months. Police identified the warrant when King showed up to drive home a car driven by his brother, who was also arrested. The former spent six hours in the Clarke County jail before bonding out and paying an undisclosed fine. “We’ve just going to do what we feel like is the right thing to do,” head coach Mark Richt said on his show, according to macon.com. “The bottom line is we’ve got to make sure everybody is taking care of business.” King started in Georgia’s win 41-14 win over Tennessee Saturday, racking up a team-high 58 yards. The 22-year-old junior is the Bulldogs’ second-leading rusher this season with 44 carries for 228 yards and a touchdown. Richt and Georgia spokesman Claude Felton decided to suspend King for two games becauseof the incident. “I expect all our players to take care of their responsibilities on and off the field,” said Richt. “When players don’t do that it damages the reputation of the player, our team, and our university. My goal is for Caleb to learn a lesson and for other players to learn from his experience.” Georgia (2-4, 1-3 SEC) takes on the Wildcats in Kentucky Saturday. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Reports: Former Marlins Skipper Gonzalez To Replace Cox Next Season Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Atlanta, GA, United States (AHN) – After legendary manager Bobby Cox bid his farewell Monday, the Atlanta Braves search for his replacement apparently will not take long with reports indicating the team would hire former Marlins Fredi Gonzalez as their new skipper. Atlanta gave long-time manager Cox a going-away present, one final postseason that ended a streak of four straight years out of the playoffs, but the Braves were unable to top the San Francisco Giants. Cox, 69, retired after 29 seasons as major league manager. He was Atlanta’s skipper for 25 seasons and spent four seasons in Toronto in the same capacity. In his tenure in Atlanta, Cox led the Braves to 14 division titles, five NL pennants, and a World Series title. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves could name former Marlins manager Fredi Gonzales to replace Cox. It could take place either before or after the World Series. A former disciple of Cox, Gonzalez was a manager in the Braves’ minor league system in 2002 and a third base coach under Cox from 2003-06 prior to his stint with the Marlins. If hired, Gonzalez would have a daunting task of not only measuring up to his predecessor’s accomplishments, but also in recreating chemistry with his new team. Gonzalez, who had won more games than any other manager in Marlins history, was dismissed after Florida started the 2010 season. Gonzalez, 46, registered a 276-279 record in parts of four seasons with the Marlins. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Rose Bowl To Undergo Major Facelift In Time For 2014 BCS Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – The 88-year-old Rose Bowl, a vital part of American sports lore, has unveiled a $152 million plan to improve the facility. The extensive three-year renovation is expected to be completed in three phases in time for the 100th Rose Bowl game and the 2014 Bowl Championship Series national title game. “This stadium is part of history. We’ve had five Super Bowls here, the Olympics, the Rose Bowl game every year,” Darryl Dunn, general manager of the stadium, told the Los Angeles Times. “It’s had a great run, but the question is what is the future going to be?” Funding will come from the sale of $130 million in bonds and contributions from the city of Pasadena, UCLA and the Tournament of Roses. Contingent on the deal is that UCLA and the Tournament of Roses extend their leases through 2043. The renovation will widen tunnels and add aisles for more comfortable entering and exiting. The field will be returned to its original oval shape and the scoreboard will be replaced with an updated version of the original 1940′s version. The organizers will also add more premium seating through the expansion of the press box building and add a high-definition video board on the north end. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Bears` Cutler Gets Clearance To Practice, Could Start Vs. Seahawks Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Chicago, IL, United States (AHN) – The Chicago Bears are expected to return to their original quarterback depth chart after Jay Cutler has been reportedly cleared to practice fully this week and is on track to start against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday. Cutler, who missed last Sunday’s 23-6 victory at Carolina due to a concussion, has been given the green light for full participation when the Bears practice Wednesday, according to NFL.com Barring any unforeseen setbacks, the 27-year-old Cutler, in his second season with the Bears, is expected to start under center Sunday against the Seahawks at Soldier Field. Cutler suffered a concussion in a Week 4 loss to the Giants. Meanwhile, Todd Collins, who became an emergency measure following the injury to Cutler, will be demoted on the quarterback depth chart, according to ESPNChicago, citing sources. The decision to downgrade Collins came after the veteran signal caller threw four interceptions against Carolina and finished with a 6.2 passer rating. Caleb Hanie will move up into the No. 2 spot in the Bears quarterback depth chart. Jets` Revis Affected By Nagging Hamstring, But Probable For Broncos Tilt Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter NY, NY, United States (AHN) – New York Jets star cornerback Darrelle Revis, who missed the previous two games with a sore left hamstring, began to feel soreness and swelling in the area during Monday night’s 29-20 win over the Minnesota Vikings. The All Pro corner received treatment and is listed as limited in practice and probable for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos. “It was hurting throughout the whole game,” Revis told the Star-Ledger. “I just fought through it and got through the game. I didn’t feel any tweak or strain. I just know it’s very sore right now.” “I know (Revis) was sore last night and he had swelling,” head coach Rex Ryan told reporters following the game. “Hopefully he’ll be just fine and ready to roll. If not, we’ll look at what’s in the best interests of him and the team.” Revis held out over the summer for a contract after an impressive season last year in which he emerged as one of the league’s most effective shut-down corners. That meant he missed camp, a time most players value to help their body get used to the grueling regular season. The Pittsburgh product has just four tackles and a pass deflection in three starts, and has been beat on highlight reels by receivers he regularly shut down in 2009. Wings Forward Maltby Retires After 16-NHL Seasons Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) – Red Wings veteran forward Kirk Maltby, who cleared waivers last week after failing to make it to the team out of camp, officially retired from the National Hockey League Tuesday after a 16-year career. The 37-year-old Maltby was a long-time member of Detroit’s “grind line,” along with Kris Draper and Joe Kocur or Darren McCarty, that was designed to shut down the top scoring line of the opponent. In a news conference Tuesday, Maltby said he was aware of his situation coming into the season. The gritty 6-foot, 193 pound Maltby, who signed a two-way contract this summer after his previous contract expired at the end of last season, was hoping to beat out one of the younger Red Wings contending for a roster spot, but it did not happen. “I knew where my situation stood and that there was a possibility that if not making it here, going to Grand Rapids. Ultimately, I had to make a decision whether I wanted to go there … it was an easy decision,” an emotional Maltby, winner of four Stanley Cups with Detroit, said as reported by the Detroit Free Press. “I’m going to miss the game; I’m going to miss being around the guys. I think that’s going to be the hardest,” he added. Maltby played his first NHL season in 1993 with the Edmonton Oilers, who selected him in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, before moving to Motor City during the 1995-96 campaign. Apart from his ability to help contain the opposing team’s top line, Maltby is also known for his penalty killing while also getting under the skin of opponents. Last year, he posted four goals and six points over 52 regular season contests, but shoulder surgery in February cut short his season. He did not see action in the postseason for the Wings, who succumbed to San Jose in the semifinals. In his NHL career, Maltby has amassed 128 goals and 132 assists (260 points) in 1,072 regular season games for the Red Wings and Oilers. He also posted 16 goals and 31 points in 169 career playoff contests. Maltby will remain with the Detroit organization as a professional scout. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Sir Charles Chimes In Over Favre Controversy: Says It`s No Story Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter NY, NY, United States (AHN) – With Brett Favre under attack for alleged inappropriate e-mails and texts sent during his tenure with the Jets in 2008, another American sports icon spoke about the issue. Former NBA star and current TNT analyst Charles Barkley supports Favre, and feels the media is unfairly victimizing the legendary 20-year veteran quarterback. “This is just the media trying to make it a story because they’ve got juicy, gory details basically,” Barkley told USA Today. “But its not a story.” “If Brett Favre sent that women pictures, it ain’t up to me to decide whether that’s right or wrong. But it’s not a news story. He didn’t break any laws. That’s between him, the girl and his wife. He’s got to answer that,” said Barkley. “It would be totally different if she wanted to file sexual harassment charges against him. But she is not saying anything. The media’s trying like hell to make it a story.” Details emerged last week on Favre allegedly sending pictures of his private parts and other sexually-explicit materials to former Jets game hostess and model Jenn Sterger. Neither Sterger nor Favre have offered anything about the issue to the media. Meanwhile, Favre had his best game of the season in a Monday night loss, posting a season-high in QB rating (85.9), yards (264) and touchdowns (3). In a season marred by ups-and-downs for Favre, the effort followed an awful first half in which he completed just 3 of 7 passes for 31 yards. Barkley, who retired from the NBA in 2000 after an acclaimed 16-year career, is no stranger to media controversy. The 47-year-old Alabama native caught a DUI in Scottsdale, AZ in December 2008 and was recently sued by the Wynn Las Vegas resort claiming he owed $400,000 in gambling debts.
