Roethlisberger Impressive In Return As Steelers Blast Browns

Pittsburgh, PA, United States (AHN) – Ben Roethlisberger, returning from a four-game suspension for violating the league’s conduct policy, went 16-for-27 for 257 yards, two touchdowns and an interception as the Pittsburgh Steelers took care of AFC North rivals the Cleveland Browns 28-10 Sunday afternoon.

Rashard Mendenhall powered the ground game with 27 carries for 84 yards and a score for Pittsburgh, which led just 7-3 at the half.

Hines Ward extended that lead with an 8-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter and Heath Miller provided the final margin with a 14-yard catch with under two minutes left.

Colt McCoy, making his first career start, went 23-for-33 for 281 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Cleveland. Benjamin Watson paced the receiving core with six catches for 88 yards and a score.

Many observers believed the key to a Browns win would be to get running back Peyton Hillis going. Hillis managed just 12 carries for 41 yards with the Browns playing catch up in the air for most of the game.

Pittsburgh (4-1) took sole possession of first place in the AFC North with the win. The Steelers head down to sunny Miami to face the Dolphins in Week 7.

Cleveland (1-5) is firmly holding up the rear in the division and things don;t get any easier Sunday. The Browns head to the Super Dome to face Super Bowl champions the New Orleans Saints.

Piscataway, NJ, United States (AHN) – Scarlet Knights’ junior defensive tackle Eric LeGrand is paralyzed below the neck after suffering a spinal-cord injury in Rutgers’ 23-20 overtime win over Army Saturday.

“Eric, his family and the Rutgers football family believe he will recover,” said Rutgers coach Greg Schiano. “We ask our fans and the entire Rutgers community to believe and pray for Eric as he begins the recovery process.”

It is not unheard of for patients to recover from such an injury, though cells of the central nervous system (neurons) have no sure way of healing themselves.

Following the Knights’ touchdown to tie the game at 17, LeGrand was attempting to make a tackle on the ensuing kickoff. He was involved in a violent collision with Army running back Malcolm Brown.

LeGrand, an Avenel, NJ native, has been a member of the team’s leadership council the past two seasons and is beloved by his teammates.

“Eric is a big, strong, nice guy, who when he hits the field, always comes to the facility with great energy,” Schiano said. “A guy who really loves to play the game. I think a lot of people like [the game] a lot. This kid loves it. He’s a great teammate.”

“We want to say thank you to everyone for all of your prayers, kind words, and well wishes,” the LeGrand family said in a statement. “We appreciate every single thought. Eric is in good spirits and we are praying for a full recovery.”

LeGrand appeared in all 13 games in 2009, recording 33 tackles, including a team-high 13 on kickoff coverage.

Carpenter Drills Winning Field Goal In OT, Propels Dolphins Over Packers

Green Bay, WI, United States (AHN) – Dan Carpenter registered big kicks in the contest, including a 44-yard field goal just under six minutes into overtime, as the Miami Dolphins outlasted the Green Bay Packers 23-20 Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Cameron Wake also stepped up and logged three sacks, including one on third down deep Green Bays’ territory that forced a punt in overtime.

Chad Henne went 23-of-39 for 231 yards with two TDs and an interception for the Dolphins (3-2), who were coming off their bye after a horrendous loss to New England that resulted in the dismissal of special teams coach John Bonamego.

On Sunday, the Fins’ special teams rebounded, with Nolan Carroll finishing 26 yards on kick returns and Davone Bess tallied an average 11.6 yards on punt returns.

Miami’s Brandon Fields averaged 41.8 yards per punt and did not have any blocks.

Henne found his favorite target Brandon Marshall, who was left unmarked by Green Bay’s defensive standout Charles Woodson for most of the tilt, resulting in 10 grabs for 127 yards in the win.

With the triumph, the Dolphins stayed perfect on the road and remained in the mix of the AFC East race.

Aaron Rodgers, who missed some time in practice this week after suffering a concussion during Green Bay’s overtime loss at Washington, connected on 18-of-33 for 313 yards with a TD and an interception for the Packers (3-3).

The Packers are without linebacker Clay Matthews (hamstring), offensive tackle Mark Tauscher (shoulder) and defensive end Ryan Pickett (ankle).

Out-Foxed: Network-Cablevision Squabble Affects MLB, NFL Viewers

Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter

NY, NY, United States (AHN) – Fox Network, who apparently was unable to come to an amicable agreement with Cablevision, blacked out Fox channels for Cablevision subscribers starting Saturday morning.

As a result, 3 million New York-area Cablevision subscribers did not receive the New York Giants game nor Game 2 of the National League Championship Series Sunday.

News Corporation, owners of New York-area Fox 5 and My9, had been airing commercials in the area. The short spots explained that Cablevision had been charging customers for Fox channels while receiving the channels for free for News Corp.

In response, Cablevision began airing spots saying Fox wanted more compensation than CBS, NBC, ABC and Univision combined.

Reports are News Corp. is demanding $150 million a year for Fox content, up from $70 million. Talks on agreeable compensation broke down, with neither side able to see an amicable end.

“The parties had several discussions again today but no material progress was made and we continue to remain far apart,” Fox said. “However, both sides agreed to continue talking tomorrow.”

“The longer this shameful News Corp. blackout of the NFL and Major League Baseball continues, the more obvious it becomes to everyone, including political leaders of both parties, that binding arbitration is the fastest and fairest way to return Fox programming to Cablevision customers,” said Cablevision’s statement.

Disputes are nothing new to either side. News Corp threatened to pull its programming from Time Warner Cable in December in a similar dispute. Cablevision lost ABC and the start of the Oscars in March after a dispute with owners the Walt Disney Co.

Mediate`s Magical Moment Marks Victory At Frys

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 04:35 PM PDT

Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter

San Martin, CA, United States (AHN) – For three days, Rocco Mediate was magical at the CordeValle Golf Club.

The Frys.com Open was looking like the Rocco.com Open.

A spectacular shot in each of his first three rounds provided Mediate with a three-shot lead going into Sunday’s final round.

Then suddenly, it was raining on Rocco’s parade. Poor weather and poor play put the tournament up for grabs as Mediate faltered and found himself five-over par through 15 holes.

Bo Van Pelt, Alex Prugh, Rickie Fowler and Chris Tidland stepped up and were tied with Mediate down the stretch at 12-under par.

Nothing was going Mediate’s way, he missed putts, missed fairways and looked like he’d blow his chance to win for the first time in eight years. He got a boost when he holed a 20-foot putt for birdie at the 16th hole then at the drivable 17th, a 298-yard par four. Mediate watched as playing partner Prugh nearly made a hole-in-one and the other member of the threesome, Van Pelt, also drove the green and was inside 20-feet for eagle.

“I had 116 yards,” Mediate recounted. His wedge shot hit four feet past the hole and spun back and dove into the hole for an eagle two. It got him to 15-under par and he’d get a hard earned par at the 18th to capture the championship, his first on the PGA Tour since his victory in 2002 at Greensboro.

“I don’t know what to say,” said Mediate, the everyman golfer who took Tiger Woods to the brink at the 2008 U.S. Open. “I was having a tough time with the weather. I can’t believe it.”

It was hard to believe. While Mediate picked his ball from the hole at 17, Van Pelt lined up his putt then hit it three feet by and amazingly missed coming back to stay at 13-under. Prugh made his short eagle putt and tied him at 13.

Mediate’s second shot into the final hole came up 40 feet short and he ran his putt four feet by the hole, a distance that he missed from several times during the round.

He watched as Van Pelt made a 30-footer for birdie then Prugh ran one in from eight feet. Both were at 14-under and Mediate needed the short one for the win.

He made it dead-center and flipped his putter off the green and threw his arms into the air, looking relieved and surprised.

Mediate had played in 192 events since the ’02 Greensboro event without victory. But this week saw him hit a magical shot during each round.

He made a hole-in-one on Thursday, an eagle two from the fairway at the par four fourth hole on Friday, a wedge shot for eagle at the 15th on Saturday then the spectacular wedge from 116 yards at the 17th when it was so desperately needed.

His 269 total was a shot better than Van Pelt and Prugh, who tied for second at 270. Van Pelt finished with a 71, Prugh shot 69. Rickie Fowler finished solo fourth with a 13-under par 271 after a closing 69.

Mediate’s 73 was his worst round of the four days but it didn’t matter to him.

As he came up to the final hole, the crowd was chanting “Rocco, Rocco, Rocco.”

The four magic shots gave Mediate eight of his 15-under total.

Had he ever done anything like that before?

“Heck no, never,” said Mediate, the everyman golfer.

Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor

Denver, CO, United States (AHN) – Mark Sanchez completed 17-of-30 passes for 198 yards and LaDainian Tomlinson had two scores, as the New York Jets rallied to defeat the Broncos 24-20 Sunday.

Sanchez, who was intercepted twice in the game, connected with Braylon Edwards for a 32-yard pass to open the scoring with 14:54 left in the first.

Denver knotted it 7-7 after Tim Tebow’s five-yard ouchdown dash minutes later.

Kicker Nick Folk’s smashed a 56-yarder knotting the game at 10-10 at 6:41 in the third.

It was a battle of the feet for a time, as Folk answered Matt Prater’s remarkable 59 yarder that capped the first half.

The Jets entered the last quarter behind 17-10 after Demaryius Thomas snapped a 10-all tie with a 17-yard TD reception with less than two minutes left in the third quarter.

Tomlinson, 31, posted 55 yards on 16 carries, along with his two TDs.

His first touchdown followed a 20-yard run with 8:36 to go in the fourth.

A call on the Broncos also dealt a blow when a pass interference flag was dropped on Denver safety Renaldo Hill, who grabbed Santonio Holmes’ facemask.

Tomlinson took advantage with a two-yard scoring romp with 1:13 left in the game to seal the Jets (5-1, 3-0) fifth win of the season.

Rookie Tebow notched his first TD in his NFL career, and the team also posted its first 100-yard rushing game of the season.

Kyle Orton logged 209 passing yards off 14-of-34 completions for Denver (2-4, 1-2).

Recari Gets First LPGA Win At CVS

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 04:35 PM PDT

Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter

Danville, CA, United States (AHN) – Beatriz Recari survived a bogey at the 71st hole Sunday and held on to claim her first victory on the LPGA Tour at the CVS Challenge.

The 22-year-old rookie from Spain closed with a two-under par 70 at the Blackhawk Country Club and won by a shot over Gwladys Nocera of France. Recari finished with a 14-under par total of 274.

Karine Icher and Michele Redman tied for third at 12-under, 276. Cristie Kerr and Wendy Ward tied at 11-under, 277.

It was Recari’s first win in the United States but she had the experience of a victory on the women’s European Tour last year to help her down the stretch.

Recari made the turn with a one-under par 36 and then birdies at the 13th and 14th holes gave her a three-shot lead over Nocera.

Recari’s bogey at 17 gave her a two-shot margin going to the final hole and she needed it when Nocera made birdie at the closing hole.

Vikings Win “Panic Bowl” Over Cowboys With Late Field Goal

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 04:35 PM PDT

Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter

Minneapolis, MN, United States (AHN) – Despite being outgained 305-188 and trailing at the half, the Minnesota Vikings used a late Ryan Longwell field goal to grab a 24-21 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Billed as the “Panic Bowl” because of each reigning division champion’s 1-3 record, the game featured the Vikings taking advantage of three Cowboys turnovers that proved to be the difference.

Brett Favre went 14-for-19 for just 118 yards and a score, while Adrian Peterson had 24 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Randy Moss, in just his second game since being acquired from the Patriots, had five catches for 55 yards. Greg Camarillo caught the lone Favre touchdown pass.

Tony Romo went 25-for-33 for 211 yards and three touchdowns, but his two interceptions directly led to 10 Vikings points, including the game-deciding field goal.

Dallas (1-4) heads home to take on division rivals the New York Giants in Week 7 for Monday Night Football.

Minnesota (2-3) takes on Favre’s former team, the Packers Sunday.

Briggs Hospitalized After Gallant Stand Against Klitschko In Heavyweight Title Bout

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 04:35 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Hamburg, Germany (AHN) – Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs displayed a lot of heart as he withstood 12 brutal rounds Saturday against heavyweight titlist Vitali “Dr. Ironfist” Klitschko that resulted in a lopsided loss and landed him in the hospital.

Briggs, a former two-time titleholder, endured the constant punishing blows and the nasty pounding unleashed by the Ukrainian champion from the opening round that ended with 120-107, 120-107 and 120-105 decision for Klitschko, who retained the WBC heavyweight title.

Three-time world heavyweight champion Klitschko (41-2, 38 KOs) could not bring down the 38-year-old American challenger, who dropped to 51-6-1, 45 KOs.

According to promoter Greg Cohen, Briggs is in Hamburg’s Eppendorf University Hospital with a broken left orbital bone in his face and a broken nose, ESPN.com reported.

Cohen also said that CT scan results came back “normal”, dispelling rumors of a brain hemorrhage suffered by Briggs.

Briggs’ best round came in the fifth, but he also absorbed several hard hits from Klitschko, who launched punishing combinations in the following rounds.

It marked the seventh successful title defense for the 39-year-old Klitschko since capturing the crown against Corrie Sanders in 2004.
