Shocking U-Turn: Rooney Pens Lucrative Five-Year Deal With MU Posted: 23 Oct 2010 05:04 AM PDT Andrew Lawn – AHN Sports Correspondent Manchester, United Kingdom (AHN) – Wayne Rooney made a shocking u-turn and signed a new five-year contract at Manchester United, just days after indications were he wanted to leave the club. Just two days before penning the deal, Rooney who turns 25 Sunday, claimed the club lacked his ambition and he would have to seek fresh pastures in order to win the trophies he desires. This led to an emotional press conference in which his manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, claiming he did not understand Rooney’s decision, making the striker the focus of fans fury. Fans made their feelings clear at United’s Champions League fixture that night, in which they vocally backed Ferguson’s stance. Whether this led to Rooney’s change of heart, is unclear, but what is known is the star atriker is now contracted to the Red Devils until 2015 and is expected to be restored to their lineup this weekend. What kind of reception he will receive remains to be seen. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
NHL Alarmed About Increasing Number Of Shootout Games Posted: 23 Oct 2010 05:04 AM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor NY, NY, United States (AHN) – The NHL is deeply concerned about the increasing number of games ending in shootouts. There is a growing sentiment in the hockey community that would like to see shootouts become rarer. According to a USA Today.com report, about 33 percent of overtime contests went into a shootout stage this season. Last year, about 15 percent of the 184 NHL games were decided by a shootout. More than half of the total 301 tilts last season that went into an extra session ended up in a shootout. In light of these results, there is a reported proposal set to be made at the Nov. 9 general manager’s meeting in Toronto that will increase the overtime period from five minutes to eight minutes. The proposal could also deal with the number of players involved in the shootout stage. In ice hockey, the shootout consists of a set amount of players from each team, three in the NHL, taking penalty shots. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Alvarez Dominates Huerta, Askren Wins Welterweight Title At Bellator 33 Posted: 23 Oct 2010 05:04 AM PDT Shawn Krest – AHN Sports Correspondent Philadelphia, PA, United States (AHN) – Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez dominated Roger Huerta in a non-title fight Thursday night in Philadelphia, earning a TKO on doctor’s stoppage. Alvarez was originally scheduled to defend his title against Season Two lightweight tournament winner Pat Curran, but Curran injured his shoulder during training. Instead, Huerta, the former UFC standout and Sports Illustrated cover subject, stepped in for a non-title superfight. Alvarez was the one looking super from the outset. In the first minute of the bout, hurting Huerta with a series of leg kicks that had his foe limping. Alvarez took immediate advantage, battering Huerta with a barrage of punches. Another brutal leg kick knocked Huerta to the mat midway through the second round. “After that first leg kick, he just seemed like he wanted to go down,” Alvarez said. Alvarez landed punches at will throughout the first two rounds and hurt Huerta with knees late in the first. Huerta’s only offense on the night was a knockdown late in the first, when he landed a solid right hand. Alvarez immediately scrambled back to his feet. Late in the second round, Huerta caught a body kick and used it to score a last-minute takedown. In between rounds, Huerta was bent over in pain in his corner. Speculation was that he had suffered a leg injury due to Alvarez’s kicks. He also had a badly swollen eye, however, and no official announcement was made as to the nature of the injury. The cageside doctor examined Huerta and recommended the fight be stopped. The win was Alvarez’s 12th career knockout and moved him to 21-2. He is 6-0 since entering Bellator’s season one tournament with five submissions and Thursday’s knockout. Only one fight during that streak has made it into the third round. Huerta lost his second straight bout and fourth in his last five outings. He fell to 21-5-1. It was the first time he’s suffered a knockout in his MMA career. While Alvarez’s fight was non-title, the Bellator welterweight championship changed hands Thursday night. Season two winner Ben Askren won a unanimous decision over champion Lyman Good. Askren, a two time NCAA wrestling champion, used his grappling skills to control the bout. Using a similar blueprint to his march through the season two tournament, Askren took down Good multiple times in each round. He then controlled from top position, landing enough strikes to keep the referee from standing them back up. Scores were 50-45, 48-47, and 49-46, all in Askren’s favor. He won the title in just his seventh pro fight, all victories. Good lost for the first time in his career after 10 wins. He had not fought since winning the title in June, 2009 in the finals of Bellator’s season one tournament. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Michelle Wie Two Back In LPGA`s Sime Darby Posted: 23 Oct 2010 05:04 AM PDT Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (AHN) – It was a long day for Michelle Wie and the rest of the field at the LPGA’s Sime Darby event at the Kuala Lumpur Country Club Friday. The players had to wait out a three-hour, 10 minute lightning delay but finally finished play just before dark. Wie opened with a three-under par 68 that left her just two shots back of the first round leaders. Mika Miyazato, no relation to the world’s No. 1 player, Ai Miyazato, shot a five-under par 66 and was tied at the top with Jee Young Lee. Hee -Won Han was a shot back at 67 followed by Wie and four other players including Jiyai Shin, the No. 3 ranked player and Suzann Pettersen, ranked fifth. All five of the world’s top women are competing. Ai Miyazato had a tough opening round and was five-over par with a 76. Yani Tseng, winner of two majors this season and ranked fourth, shot 75. Cristie Kerr, ranked second, opened with a one-over par 72. Wie, who is still attending Stanford University, had four birdies and only one bogey during her round. The bogey came with a three-putt at the 15th hole. “It was a long day,” Wie explained as she and the rest of the players were forced to return to the clubhouse for the long delay in play. “First it was 30 minutes, then another 30 minutes then another 30 minutes,” Wie said, echoing the field’s frustration. “I think I did pretty well,” said Wie, who is ranked seventh in the world and has a chance to move higher with a good showing this week. “I’m just out there grinding. It’s very hot so you’re taking one shot at a time.” Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Aus Vs Ind 3rd ODI: India Need to Prove Their Point Once Again Posted: 23 Oct 2010 01:12 AM PDT After the bash out of Australia by India in two test series by 2-0, a clean sweep, which itself was a record, the three ODI series was a good chance for Australia to recover back. Australia are number one position in ICC ODI ranking and India is number one ranking in ICC Test Ranking. India has been struggling to stay at number two in ICC ODI ranking due the South Africa who was at number three position escalated to number two position after their 3-0 win over the Zimbabwe team in 3 ODI series concluded yesterday. The first ODI between India and Australia totally washed away due to rain and the match got abandoned. That was in Kochi on last Monday. The second ODI was scheduled in Vishakhapatnam for last Wednesday. The match was purely a game of newcomers included in both sides to demonstrate their talents. Australian newcomers on one hand failed to excel whereas on the other hand Indian newcomers excelled and snatched back the ODI from Australia's grip to take a lead of 1-0 in a 3 ODI series reduced to 2 ODI series due to first ODI in Kochi getting abandoned. The Australian openers failed to score much and were back to pavilion early. But then their stalwarts Hussey, Captain Clarke and Cameroon White took the innings total to a respectable 289 for three wickets thereby putting a challenge for India of 290 runs. The same scenario happened in Indian innings too when the openers failed to produce substantial runs and then it was Veteran Yuvraj with Virat Kohli and then Suresh Raina's inexpensive innings opened the door of win for India. It was Kohli's second ODI against Australia in which he scored a superb century and helped India in taking the lead. The same lot of young inexperienced players from both countries will now head for the third and final ODI to be played this Sunday in Goa at Margao Nehru Stadium. India has a success rate of 40% on this ground as out of their five ODIs played here India has succeeded in only two. Whereas Australia has a hundred percent success rate on this ground as they won both the ODI played here earlier. Since Tendulkar, Sehwag, Zaheer, Harbhajan, Ishant, Gambhir are again not playing in this match, it is now Dhoni and his youth players who have to again demonstrate their stronghold in all areas of cricket. Dhoni is expected to get some considerable runs here for India as in the earlier ODI he failed to score good score. Kohli, Yuvraj and Raina will have to sustain their form and produce useful runs for India. Good news for India is that Hussey and Bollinger are out of this ODI and could be a relief. |

Getzlaf added the winning goal after a scrum in front of Flyers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky (19 saves), who looked to have made the save. Video replay proved otherwise, as the deflection crossed the goal mouth. Matt Beleskey and Corey Perry were credited with assists on the tally. Lubomir Visnovsky opened the scoring for Anaheim during the first, followed by Jason Blake’s goal for the 2-1 lead. Scott Hartnell put the Flyers on the board with his wrister in the same frame, as Teemu Selanne and Andreas Lilja recorded assists. Claude Giroux’s backhander knotted the game in the second period, after McElhinney denied him a second earlier. It was not enough despite the Flyers’ outshooting the Ducks 42-22.
