NCAA Considering Fines, Punishment For Agents, Players

Posted: 26 Oct 2010 04:43 PM PDT

Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter

Chapel Hill, NC, United States (AHN) – The NCAA met last week with the NFL and other officials in a panel to address the issue of improper agent activity in college sports. The panel, which consists of 22 officials across a wide range of roles, is planning another meeting next month.

The meetings are likely in reaction to a spatter of well-publicized violations in colleges from North Carolina to USC. Just last month Sport Illustrated published an agent confession by former agent Josh Luchs.

Luchs garnered a boatload of attention for naming more than 30 former college players that accepted money from him while they were in school.

“Tackling the complex issue of improper agent activity in college sports requires commitment from several groups,” said the NCAA in a statement.

“Key representatives from the NCAA staff, its member schools, Collegiate Commissioners Association, NFL, NFL Players Association, American Football Coaches Association, state government and the agent community met again last week and continue to make progress in identifying potential solutions.”

Participants include Ray Anderson, NFL, Executive Vice President of Football Operations; James Guidry, NFL Players Association,Collegiate Affairs Manager; David Price, NCAA, Vice President of Enforcement; Rick Smith, agent, Priority Sports & Entertainment; Grant Teaff, American Football Coaches Association, Executive Director; among many others.

The committee may move to implement a conduct system similar to the one the NFL Players Association uses to certify agents and fine them for improper activity.

“The group has identified opportunities for greater collaboration, including enforcement efforts, potential post-NCAA financial penalties, best practices for the effective enforcement of state agent laws, educational efforts, as well as an examination of the frequency and timing of agent contact with student-athletes.”

Farewell To Farrell; Francona Says Jays Skipper Will Excel

Posted: 26 Oct 2010 04:43 PM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – John Farrell, the Red Sox’s pitching coach for the past four seasons, was named manager of the Toronto Blue Jays Monday.

It will mark the second consecutive offseason that Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona will lose a trusted confidant and a close friend.

Last winter, the Red Sox bid farewell to Brad Mills, who was named manager of the Houston Astros.

The Red Sox did not just lose a great pitching coach and one of the most respected men in baseball in Farrell, 48, but their AL East-rival Jays just got better with Farrell on board.

Though Farrell has no experience as a manager; he boasts a diverse background of baseball experience.

Farrell was a former Major League pitcher. He played for the Indians, Angels and Tigers from 1987-96, registering a record of 36-46 with 4.56 ERA in 116 contests, including 109 starts.

He joined Francona’s staff as the Red Sox pitching coach position prior to the 2007 campaign after serving as the director of player development for the Indians for five years following his retirement as an active player.

“It’s a loss for us but we’re happy for John [Farrell] and Sue and their opportunity,” Francona told the Boston.com. “John’s a star and he deserves this. We’ve been saying since the day we hired him that we were going to lose him. Being excited for him outweighs our loss.”

“I think we hire good people,” Francona added. “You want to do that. Sure, it would be great if everybody stayed around. But when you hire good people, they get noticed.”

Farrell succeeds Cito Gaston, who retired after the season.

Gaston will remain with the Blue Jays organization as an advisor. He finished his Toronto managerial career with a record of 894-837 over 12 seasons, managing 1,731 games for the Jays.

Gaston guided the Blue Jays to back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and ’93.

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

St. Paul, MN, United States (AHN) – Michal Handzus found the back of the net in the fifth round of a shootout, lifting the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-2 decision over the Minnesota Wild Monday night at Xcel Energy Center.

Goalie Jonathan Quick prevented Minnesota’s bid to extend the contest by thwarting Antti Miettinen’s backhand shot in the fifth round, sending the Kings to their fifth victory in six games overall.

Anze Kopitar, who also scored in the shootout, scored a goal and an assist, while Jarrett Stoll accounted for the other goal for the Kings, who improved to 2-1 on its current five-game road trip.

Quick finished with 20 saves in the victory.

Prior to the contest, the Kings placed defenseman Drew Doughty on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

It marked the second time that the Kings were playing without Doughty, who got injured in Wednesday’s 4-3 win against Carolina.

As a result, the Kings recalled defenseman Jake Muzzin Manchester of the AHL Monday.

The Wild, who were looking to take advantage of Doughty’s absence on L.A.’s blue line, got a goal each from John Madden and Nick Schultz.

Minnesota, which was aiming to get back into the win column after having a two-game win streak snapped Friday by the Canucks, has now dropped two in a row.

Niklas Backstrom finished with 32 saves in the loss.

The Kings continue their current road swing Wednesday with a stop at Chicago, while Minnesota will play Washington Thursday.
