Liverpool About to See Sunshine with Change in Ownership Posted: 15 Oct 2010 12:33 PM PDT
He is anticipating that the financial issues under review with Texas court and the chancery division in London will set free Liverpool FC for their new financial owners NESV group. As long as Tom Hicks and George Gillett owned Liverpool FC, they continuously lost their reputation, and financial credentials. They acquired an image of asset strippers of the club. Once the club is out of their grip, it can think of some improvements and change in financial ownerships. Tom Hicks has tried all his power to not let the club change its ownership, may be for his own selfishness. All the fans of Liverpool Football Club have been under tension about the uncertainty of the club. They all felt, somehow or the other, Tom Hicks and George Gillett should go off the club and let it get to its normalcy and certainty. Under the ownership of Tom Hicks and George Elliot, Liverpool locales are never happy with what is happening in and around the club. They always felt the misappropriate intentions of both not taking the things in right and positive direction. When local courts could not give appropriate decision, the people of Liverpool moved the case to London High Court to get Liverpool Football Club set free from Hicks and Elliot. Such is the emotional connection between the age old club and the local public. They felt that this decision is much more important than the cup finals. Prior to the club acquired by Hicks and Gillett in 2007, Moores family owned it for almost 50 years. Under the manager Bill Shankly charisma and inspirational motives, the club prospered wonderfully. People feel that with the change of hands and ownerships, the clubs professionalism has grown at the cost of gentleness. The new management has assured to make it debt free first but there is a long way to go to get it back on track. This indicates that Hicks and Gillett have done lot of damage to the club – reputation wise and financially, both. |
LPGA Faces Lawsuit From Transgender Golfer Lana Lawless Posted: 15 Oct 2010 06:01 AM PDT Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter Danville, CA, United States (AHN) – For 18 years, the transgender woman who now goes by Lana Lawless was a tough cop working the gang detail on the streets of Rialto, California. Now Lawless simply wants to try and play on the LPGA Tour. As the LPGA begins play today in the first round of the CVS Classic, it faces a lawsuit filed by Lawless in San Francisco District Court. It is a discrimination lawsuit. The former bartender from Palm Springs wants a shot at the LPGA Q-School. The LPGA has a long-standing “female at birth” policy. Lawless is now fighting that. Lawless came into national golf focus when she won the 2008 ReMax long-drive championship in the women’s division. Along with the LPGA, Lawless has also named the LDA, Long Drivers of America in the lawsuit. Lawless underwent gender reassignment surgery in 2005 and now wants to compete professionally on the LPGA Tour. LPGA officials have offered no comment as they have yet to see the lawsuit. The USGA does allow transgender entrants to try and qualify for its competitons and the Olympics have eased its former stance on transgender athletes. Now it’s the LPGA’s turn to answer the lawsuit filed on grounds of discrimination. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Giants To Hand Jonathan Sanchez Ball For Game Two Start Posted: 15 Oct 2010 06:01 AM PDT John Nestor – AHN Sports Correspondent San Francisco, CA, United States (AHN) – Looking to break up his righthanded starters, San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he will tab lefthander Jonathan Sanchez to start Game Two of the National League Championship Series in Philadelphia. The move will sandwich Sanchez between Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, with Cain now slated to start Game Three in San Francisco Tuesday. Lincecum will start Game One Saturday night when he faces Roy Halladay, who pitched a no-hitter in his postseason debut against the Cincinnati Reds in the Division Series. The matchup of Lincecum and Halladay is one of the more highly anticipated pitching matchups in recent postseason history. “It gives Matt the home opener here,” Bochy said Wednesday. “That’s the way we’re leaning right now. We have confidence in both of them but we really think to break up the righties and lefties there is a better way to go.” Sanchez might match up better with Philadelphia’s powerful lineup, which features a number of lefthanded bats, in Philly than Cain would. On Aug. 19, Sanchez held the Phillies to two hits in eight innings. He allowed one run, struck out seven and issued two walks in a 5-2 victory by the Giants, their only win in the three-game set. Sanchez will likely face Roy Oswalt in Game Two with Cain opposing Philadelphia lefthander Cole Hamels in Game Three. Hamels threw a shutout on the road in Game Three of the NLDS to close out the Reds. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Ortmann Hauls Third World Title At World Straight Pool Championship Posted: 15 Oct 2010 06:01 AM PDT AHN Sports Staff NJ, United States (AHN) – German pool master Oliver Ortmann secured his place in billiards history Wednesday, as he became the first European to bag a World Championship title on three different occasions. The 43-year-old Ortmann proved he’s still one of the finest straight pool players in the world after he trampled world’s no.1 Mika Immonen in the finals of the Predator World Tournament of 14.1 in New Jersey. The win made Ortmann the first European and only second cue master to pull off a World Championship hat-trick in his career. Ortmann first captured a world title at the WPA World 9-ball Championship in 1995. After a 12-year drought, Ortmann bested Huidji See to win his second world crown at the 2007 WPA World Straight Pool Championship. Prior to his historic victory, only American campaigner Earl “the Pearl” Strickland accomplished the rare feat, winning the WPA World 9-ball championships in 1990, 1991, and 2002 Ortmann, who was originally known as 14.1 straight pool master before developing into all-around pool player, dedicated the title to his ailing mother. Ortmann said he really wanted to win the tournament for his mother, who’s reportedly battling cancer. Immonen, two-time world champion, praised Ortmann for another masterful performance, admitting he was badly outplayed. “Oliver is a champion. I even admitted before the match, that I think he is the greatest straight pool player in the world”, Immonen addressed to the crowd after conceding the match to Ortmann in the final rack, “Maybe I jinxed myself!” Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Melzer Knocks Off Nadal At Shanghai Masters Posted: 15 Oct 2010 06:01 AM PDT AHN Sports Staff Shanghai, China (AHN) – Austrian Jurgen Melzer pulled off a stunner Thursday by scoring a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 upset victory over world No.1 Rafael Nadal in the third round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 1000. After barging into the top-12 for the first time in his career, the 29-year-old Austrian came through with another eye-popping victory this season as he conquered no other than the world’s best tennis player. Melzer, who reached at least the fourth-round of three Grand Slam tournaments this year, started in aggressive fashion, launching powerful serves and sharp forehands to dominate Nadal 6-1in the opening set. Nadal, who had not lost to Melzer in previous head-to-head encounters, bounced back from his first-set thrashing to take a 6-3 second set win, and more importantly, force a decider at the near sellout Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai. Nerve became a factor in the third set, with both Melzer and Nadal committing multitudes of unforced errors and blowing several opportunities to gain a decisive edge. Nevertheless, Melzer showed more poise in the crucial stretch of the match, as he overcame a controversial call to complete an upset win over the 9-time Grand Slam champion. During the post-game interview, Melzer talked about the unexpected win over Nadal and his late-blooming tennis career. Melzer admitted things wasn’t going right in his career until he reached his first Grand Slam semifinals appearance at this year’s French Open. With the victory, Melzer improved his chance to move into the top-8 of the world ranking, which would qualify him in the season-finale ATP World Tour Finals in London this November. NASCAR: Some Surprises Among Second Hall Group Posted: 15 Oct 2010 04:18 AM PDT Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter Charlotte, NC, United States (AHN) – When the second class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame was announced Wednesday afternoon the announcement was more about those names that were left out more than those who were voted in. Bobby Allison, Ned Jarrett, Bud Moore, David Pearson and Lee Petty were all well-deserved, but there was surprise over the selections of Jarrett and Moore over three-time champions Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip. Allison won less championships and his total wins (84) were comparable to that of Waltrip and Yarborough, but voters apparently went with the aging Moore and Jarrett over the three-time champions. Jarrett, always the gentleman and well-respected in the NASCAR community, won two NASCAR titles (1961 and 1965) and was a two-time Sportsman Division champion (1957 and ’58). He totaled 50 premier series wins, tied for 11th all-time, was named one of NASCAR’s “50 Greatest Drivers” and has become renown as a broadcaster. Moore was a renown NASCAR Sprint Cup owner, won back-to-back championships in 1962-63 with Joe Weatherly and fielded cars for David Pearson, Allison, Buck and Buddy Baker, Benny Parsons and others. Pearson and Lee Petty were considered locks for the second class after the first class was dominated by the founders of the sport. Pearson was a three-time NASCAR champion and stands second on the all-time wins list with 105, while Petty became the sport’s first three-time series champion after winning titles in 1954, ’58 and ’59. He won the first Daytona 500 in 1959 and was the founder of Petty Enterprises. Allison, winner of the 1983 NASCAR title, ended his career with 84 victories, tied for third on the all-time list. Road To World Series Continues As Final Four Battle in LCS Posted: 15 Oct 2010 04:18 AM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor New York, NY, United States (AHN) – After the conclusion of the four Division Series, anticipation is on the rise again as the “Final Four” battle it out in the Championship Series. In the American League Championship Series, the defending World Series champion New York Yankees will be squaring off with the upstart Texas Rangers, who had never won a postseason series until Tuesday night. Aiming to become the first club to win back-to-back World Series titles since accomplishing the feat in 1998, 1999 and 2000, the Yankees with their bevy of postseason experience and talent are expected to focus on one particular Rangers player – Cliff Lee. Lee logged his third career playoff complete game as he guided the Rangers their first playoff series win Tuesday. He fanned 11 batters in a complete game effort in the decisive Game 5 of the ALDS vs. Tampa Bay. But the much-awaited showdown against the Rangers left-hander will not take place until Game 3. The Rangers will host the Bronx Bombers in the ALCS opener, sending C.J Wilson to square off against left-hander CC Sabathia, the 2009 ALCS MVP. Meanwhile in the National League Championship Series, the two teams considered to possess the best rotations in the playoffs will collide when the Philadelphia Phillies face the San Francisco Giants. Philadelphia, which is shooting for its third consecutive pennant, is favored by many based on their advantage in almost all of the position-by-position matchups. On the other hand, San Francisco, which is back in the NLCS for the first time since winning the NL pennant in 2002, will be banking on their previous outings when they beat all of the Phillies’ aces in the regular season. This season, the Phillies split their six matchups against San Francisco. It will mark the first time both teams, who are original NL franchises, will ever meet in the postseason. Indian Tennis Star Looks To Double Pleasure As Sports Agent Posted: 15 Oct 2010 04:18 AM PDT John Nestor – AHN Sports Correspondent New Delhi, India (AHN) – Indian tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi is winding down his career on the court but already has a new career path mapped out. One of the best doubles players in the history of the sport, Bhupathi has about two years of competitive tennis left in him before he turns his full attention to managing athletes instead of being one. The 36-year-old, who has won 11 Grand Slam titles in his career, plans to step away from the game sometime after the 2012 Summer Olympics and devote his time to his management company, Globosport. Globosport is a management company for athletes and movie stars that Bhupathi started and he has clinets ranging from India’s top women’s tennis player, Sania Mirza to Bollywood film star Saif Ali Khan, After the 2012 Summer Olympics Bhupathi will focus his attention full-time on Globosport, which works to set up sponsorship deals for clients with big Indian and multinational brands. “If I push my tennis career to the Olympics, so be it, but after that I’m here (in India) full-time and I can build as many relationships as I want,” Bhupathi told the Wall Street Journal. Bhupathi started Globosport in 2001. A graduate of the University of Mississippi, Bhupathi does not come from a business background, but his success on the court has helped his business off of it. “It’s not going to last forever,” Bhupathi said of his playing career to the Journal. “But my success in tennis opens a lot of doors for me in the business world.” Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
