First Time For Everything: Hornaday Lands Elusive Martinsville Win

Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Martinsville, VA, United States (AHN) – NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday has won more races than anyone in the series, but until Saturday Martinsville Speedway had eluded him.

On Saturday he could add a victory there to his resume as well, asHornaday won the Kroger 200, his 47th career win and his first at the historic half-mile venue.

For his efforts, Hornaday got the rare grandfather clock trophy — always given to Cup race winners — which was offered up for the first time in Truck Series.

“They should have put the clock up earlier — it might have given me a little more motivation,” said Hornaday.

The four-time Truck Series champion drove his No. 33 Kevin Harvick Chevrolet away from Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Toyota on Lap 205 of a green-white-checkered-flag finish.

“It was normal Martinsville, just don’t know how to find speed when you need it. Overall, just a good day. Ran real competitive. We were right behind the 2 (Kevin Harvick) and the 33 (Ron Hornaday Jr.) for most of it trying to make our way back up to the front,” said Busch.

“Once getting there, just too tight. We just couldn’t get the thing to roll the center of the corner the way it needed to roll the center of the corner the way it needed to. Just got beat. We’ll go on to next week I guess.”

In a race that went six laps of overtime, Busch ran second and was followed by series points leader Todd Bodine, Jason White and Aric Almirola. Mike Skinner, David Starr, Stacy Compton, Ricky Carmichael and Matt Crafton completed the top 10.

The race was slowed three times by cautions in the final 25 laps and the 11th and final caution set up the two-lap dash to the finish.

“It was a little eventful for us – not a normal, typical Martinsville for us. Starting 24th we knew we had to strategize our way to the front and (Mike Hillman) Junior (crew chief) did a great job and had a plan laid out to get track position that we needed and it worked. We had a really, really good truck. It kind of went away a little bit at the end. I was overdriving it a little bit probably,” said Bodine.

“This was one of the wild cards we were worried about with the points race and anything can happen like in the spring time. A guy stopped in front of me in the middle of the back straightaway and I ran into him, popped the radiator and blew the motor. Stuff that you can’t control.”

“To come out of here third is a great day, a good run for us. We’ve got a lot of good runs at Martinsville – we finally led some laps and ended up leading the most laps today so that was good points wise. I’m proud of everybody at Germain Racing for sticking with me and doing a great job every single week.”

With Late Pass, Brad Keselowski Wins At Gateway

Posted: 24 Oct 2010 04:43 PM PDT

Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Madison, IL, United States (AHN) – The last time Brad Keselowski came to Gateway International Raceway, he got turned by Carl Edwards on the last lap and it cost him the win.

Saturday Keselowski kept his car out of trouble, took four tires on his final pit stop and made the pass for the lead with a half a lap to go to win the 5-Hour Energy 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Gateway.

“To finally get this Gateway win, the last race of this track in Illinois, is great,” said Keselowski. “I try not to hold grudges. You’ve got to move on to the next race and we did that today.”

The win avenged his misfortune here back in July and gave the points leader his sixth win of the season and the 12th of his career. The win also enabled him to extend his points lead over Edwards, who congratulated Keselowski in Victory Lane.

Keselowski held off Mike Bliss in Kevin Harvick’s Chevrolet for the win, but the driver who had, arguably, the best car of the day was Keselowski’s teammate, Justin Allgaier.

Allgaier led a race-best 88 laps, but struggled on pit road and settled for third.

“We felt like we had an awesome race car. We had the dominant car in the race and unfortunately couldn’t get off of pit road tonight,” said Allgaier. “I guess we’ll go next week and see what we can’t do in Texas.”

Jason Leffler ran fourth and was chased across the finish line by Edwards, while the top-10 was rounded out by Reed Sorenson, Josh Wise, Brad Coleman, Paul Menard and Jeremy Clements.

It looked as if Bliss might win the race in the closing laps, but Sorenson got close enough to Bliss to hold him up and Keselowski took advantage as he made the pass for the win.

“It was nice. They’ve got really nice equipment. We were alright today,” said Bliss. “All in all it was a good finish. Taking two tires was the right car.”

Pavin Retains Lead At Administaff; Wiebe One Back

Posted: 24 Oct 2010 04:43 PM PDT

Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter

The Woodlands, TX, United States (AHN) – Corey Pavin won his first PGA Tour event at The Woodlands in 1984. It was the Houston Open.

He’s now playing at a course across the street from that old venue and he’ll be trying for his first Champions Tour win Sunday.

Pavin shot a four-under par 68 Saturday at The Woodlands tournament course for a 36-hole total of 134 and a one-shot lead over Mark Wiebe.

Wiebe, who began the day a shot behind Pavin, matched Pavin’s 68 and is alone at nine-under par 135.

Fred Couples, who dominated the early season on the Champions Tour, found that form in the second round as he shot a seven-under par 65 and moved within two shots of the leader.

Tom Lehman is five shots back after a 68 and is in at 139.

Pavin is back to playing after seeing his Ryder Cup team lose earlier this month to the European team in Wales. Pavin is glad to be back to playing rather than worrying about the Ryder Cup.

“It’s been nice to relax. I was home last week and finally had some time to practice.”

The practice served him well. He held a two-shot lead before making his only bogey of the day at the 17th.

Couples had eight birdies for his round and just one bogey at the 16th hole.

Laird Grabs Lead, Seeks Repeat Win At Shriners

Posted: 24 Oct 2010 04:43 PM PDT

Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter

Las Vegas, NV, United States (AHN) – There have been six first-time winners the past six years at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Classic.

Martin Laird wants to do something about that on Sunday.

Laird, the defending champion at this event, shot an eight-under par 63 Saturday for a 19-under par total of 194 and will hold a one-shot lead going into the final round.

Laird got himself into the lead when he hit the shot of the day, a driver off the tee at the 295-yard par four 15th hole that landed only nine feet from the cup. He would make the putt and par in for his 63.

Still, he leads by only one over second round leader Jonathan Byrd.

Byrd sank a 10-foot putt at the final hole for a 66 and an 18-under par total of 195. Byrd lost his chance for the lead when he made par at the 15th, a hole that virtually every player in the field looks to for a birdie.

But he reached the par five 16th in two and made birdie then sank the putt at 18.

Laird saved his round when he made par at the 16th hole after his second shot found the water.

Two players are two shots back of Laird — Cameron Percy and Webb Simpson. Percy had the day’s low round, a 62. He got off to great start.

He was seven-under par through 12 holes before he stumbled with a bogey at the 14th. He made up for it when he holed a putt for eagle at the par five 16th then birdied 18.

“Just trying to get calm,” Percy said after shooting his career low round. “Today was quite nice. I’ll just chill out and relax tonight.”

He needs a great final round. He is 185th on the money list.

Simpson shot a 64 and was looking forward to the final round. “I like this course. It’s one of those things. It fits my eye.”

Giant Surprise: Uribe Solo Shot Powers San Francisco Over Phils For NL Pennant

Posted: 24 Oct 2010 04:43 PM PDT

AHN Sports Staff

Philadelphia, PA, United States (AHN) – Juan Uribe crushed a solo home run in the eighth inning, and reliever Brian Wilson survived the ninth frame giving the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in game six of the NLCS Saturday.

The Giants won the NLCS 4-2 and will face the Rangers in the World Series.

Tim Lincecum made a rare relief pitching appearance for the Giants in the eighth inning, one of six Giants pitchers to see action in the clincher.

The busy bullpen was necessary due to the shaky work of starter Jonathan Sanchez, who lasted two frames.

He came unglued after hitting Chase Utley with a pitch, clearing both benches with a comment that Utley shrugged off.

Utley threw the ball harmlessly in the pitcher’s direction, but Sanchez apparently didn’t care for the gesture.

Wilson fanned Ryan Howard looking on a 3-2 pitch to set off a wild Giants celebration as the underdogs knocked off the reigning NL champs.

The Phils built a 2-0 first inning lead on Chase Utley’s RBI double and Jayson Werth’s sac fly RBI that scored Utley.

Aubrey Huff answered with a run-scoring single in the third and later scored on an error by first baseman Ryan Howard to knot the contest at 2-2.
