Kidd Absent In Mavs Final Meeting; Nowitzki Could Test Free Agency

Dallas, TX, United States (AHN) – Dallas Mavericks starting guard Jason Kidd was reportedly absent during the team’s final meeting, a major sports outlet posted Friday.

Kidd, 37, was a no-show for the Mavs final meeting Friday, one day after they were eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs 4-2 in the first round of the playoffs.

The Mavs guard reportedly booked early travel to his Phoenix residence to deal with personal issues.

Kidd, who just averaged 8.0 points and 7.0 assists in the series, was completely outplayed by the Spurs up-and-coming star George Hill and all-star Tony Parker.

Rumors circulated Kidd was not physically ready in the series after a flu virus inflicted him just before the playoffs.

Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle said he had no problem with Kidd’s “unsurprising” absence in the meeting.

“No, it’s not surprising,” Carlisle told ESPN. “Look, he’s gone. He went back to Phoenix, I think to get away from it and do some personal things, and so I got no problem with that.”

Kidd, who has 1-2 playoff record since he was traded to the Mavericks in February 2008, still has two years left in his three-year, $28 million contract.

Meanwhile, Mavs power forward Dirk Nowitzki also showed an indication of joining superstars LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh in this summer’s possible free agent market.

After absorbing another first round setback, an emotional Nowitzki opened up to reporters about his expiring contract and his future in Dallas.

“I guess I’ve got some time now to think about some stuff, think about my options.” said Nowitzki, who can opt out from a $21.5 million deal for next season to test the free-agency market.

Mavs general manager Donnie Wilson said the franchise wants its franchise player to stay in Dallas.

The Mavericks ended the season in disappointment, as they were booted out in the first round of the playoffs for the third time in four years.

The Mavs entered the playoffs as the second-seeded in the Western Conference, only to be defeated by the defensive-minded Spurs.

Three Undefeated Super Middleweights Win On Showtime Boxing Card

Posted: 01 May 2010 09:52 AM PDT

Shawn Krest – AHN Sports Correspondent

Chicago, Illinois, United States (AHN) – Marcus Johnson defeated Derek Edwards by unanimous decision in a battle of undefeated super middleweights Friday night in Chicago.

The showdown highlighted three bouts between super middleweight prospects televised by Shobox.

Johnson was active with the jab and stalked Edwards throughout the bout. Edwards was able to land single shots countering the advancing Johnson, but could not put up any sustained offense.

Edwards, announced as 30 years old but rumored to be older, was at least six years a veteran of Johnson, and he seemed to have trouble keeping up after an active first round.

After controlling the action but keeping a safe distance in the first half of the fight, Johnson began to land crisp power shots in the seventh, eighth and tenth rounds. He was unable to do enough damage to put Edwards in danger of a stoppage, however.

Scores were 97-93, 98-92, and 98-92. AHN’s unofficial scorecard had it 98-92.

Johnson moved to 19-0 and won in the first ten-round fight of his career. Edwards lost for the first time after 25 wins to start his career. Edwards is now 8-1 against fighters with a winning record.

In an eight-round fight filled with action, hometown fighter Donovan George remained undefeated by taking a unanimous decision over Osumanu Adama.

Most of the rounds were very close, with both fighters having their moments, which led to a wide range on the scorecards. A late knockdown by George helped to provide some breathing room in the final scores.

Adama had the early advantage. After a back-and-forth first round, Adama landed several solid blows in the second and had George on the ropes.

George was able to make adjustments and managed to battle back from an early deficit. In the fifth round, George staggered Adama with an overhand left.

George also landed counter left hooks on Adama and began working the body in the middle rounds. In the sixth round, George unveiled an uppercut that he was able to land while the two fighters worked on the inside in the middle rounds.

The blows seemed to have the intended effect on Adama, who slowed his activity level in the later rounds.

In the seventh, the two fighters worked on the inside. As Adama pulled back to work on the outside, George landed a right cross on the retreating opponent that sent him to the mat.

Adama tried to match the knockdown in the final round and was able to hurt George in the first minute. George remained on his feet, however, and took the decision on all three cards.

Scores were 79-72, 76-75 and 77-74. AHN’s unofficial scorecard had it 77-74 in favor of George.

George remained undefeated at 20-0-1 and went the distance for the first time since 2005. He fought into the seventh and eighth rounds for the first time in his career and won for the fifth time since missing more than 20 months due to legal troubles.

Adama fell to 17-2.

In the first super middleweight bout of the night, Edwin Rodriguez remained undefeated, knocking out Kevin Engel in the sixth round.

Rodriguez dominated the early rounds with fast hands and an aggressive approach. Engel was unable to produce any offense at the start of the fight, as he was too busy absorbing Rodriguez’s swarming attack.

Led by a fast jab and hooks to the body, Rodriguez threw long combinations from the outset.

In the third round, Engel was able to get his timing back and land some counter shots, but Rodriguez still controlled the action.

By the fourth round, Engel had a bloody nose and was trying to survive.

The end came in the sixth when Rodriguez landed a brutal right hand to the body. Engel fell and was unable to beat the count. The end came at 2:35 of the sixth.

Rodriguez moved to 15-0 with his 1th knockout. Engel suffered his third career knockout and fell to 17-3.

Pak vs Ban ICC T20 Live Score: Who Has The Momentum Pakistan or Bangladesh?

Posted: 01 May 2010 09:46 AM PDT

Pakistan vs. Bangladesh

Pakistan vs. Bangladesh

Pakistan and Bangladesh are going to face each other at St. Lucia. Former have the experience of six Twenty20 internationals and the latter of only two.

But still both have their own pros cons due to this format. Pakistan's experience may be Bangladesh's consequence and Bangladesh's suitability for T20 format for Pakistan.

Even, Bangladesh has improved in many ways which they have displayed in matches against India and England. Its players like Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mashrafe Mortaza have made Bangladesh strong. Pakistan also understands the danger it is surrounded with in the form of Mohammad Ashraful, Aftab Ahmed, Mahmudullah and Abdur Razzak.

To beat the fear that Bangladesh will try to impose on Pakistan, it has its veterans. With half of its team constituting all-rounders can make super XI and do wonders against any team. May be Pakistan is bit thin in its batting line but bowling strength that it possesses makes every other team envies them.

In order to make it big Pakistan need to strengthen its middle order batting line where chiefly relies upon Umar Akmal. Even though he is not well suited for such a format but can act as an all-rounder for the time being.

Shakib Al Hasan is Bangladesh’s hero, a man extremely competent not only of sustaining up his side when required, but pushing them along in his vividness. Pakistan’s weakness on the side of left-arm spin can give them lots of pain if not watched carefully.

Possible teams for Pakistan and Bangladesh for Saturday's Match:

Pakistan: 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Shahid Afridi (capt), 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Fawad Alam, 7 Abdul Razzaq, 8 Mohammad Sami, 9 Mohammad Aamer, 10 Mohammad Asif, 11 Saeed Ajmal

Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Mohammad Ashraful, 4 Aftab Ahmed, 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Naeem Islam, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 9 Mashrafe Mortaza, 10 Abdur Razzak, 11 Syed Rasel For more on cricket, T20, ICC and live scores watch this space.

Legendary Broadcaster Uecker Healing After Heart Surgery

Posted: 01 May 2010 06:44 AM PDT

AHN Sports Staff

Milwaukee, WI, United States (AHN) – Veteran sports broadcaster Bob Uecker was reportedly in stable condition after undergoing successful heart surgery in a Milwaukee hospital Friday.

Uecker, a member of the Milwaukee Brewers broadcasting team since 1971, underwent surgery to replace a damaged valve, root, and other parts of the aorta.

Uecker also underwent a coronary bypass operation on one of his vessel.

Dr. Alfred Nicolosi performed the surgery at 2:30 p.m. CT at the Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Nicolosi said the six-hour surgery went smoothly and predicted Uecker will recover 10-12 weeks after the procedure.

Uecker longtime radio partner Cory Provus will temporarily take play-by-play announcing, while Fox Sports Wisconsin’s broadcaster Davey Nelson will serve as a color analyst during the Brewers road trip.

WTMJ-AM, the Brewers flagship radio station, will evaluate possible options while Uecker is still recovering from the surgery.

Uecker, who also underwent surgery in his aorta in 1991, will remain in the Intensive Care Unit for five to seven days.

Dr. Jim Kleczka will still conduct an evaluation to determine whether Uecker needs another bypass surgery.

Mark Attanasio, chairman and principal owner of the Milwaukee Brewers, expressed his appreciation for the successful surgery and wished Uecker “a complete and speedy recovery.”

Uecker played seven seasons in the MLB, including a two-year stint as a member of the Milwaukee Braves (1962-1963).

He drew more attention after his playing career for compiling mediocre stats and being able to laugh at himself and others in Miller Lite commercials.

Uecker also tested his acting chops as a father and husband in the ABC comedy ‘Mr. Belvedere’ in the late 1980’s and in bit parts in movies.

Uecker will forever be tied to the phrase ‘just a bit outside’ for a pitcher’s offering that was not particularly close to the plate.

Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns Weigh In On Mayweather-Mosley

Posted: 01 May 2010 06:44 AM PDT

Shawn Krest – AHN Sports Correspondent

Las Vegas, Nevada, United States (AHN) – While Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. made weight Friday afternoon for their Saturday night welterweight mega-fight, two Hall of Famers from the division weighed in on the bout.

“I had a premonition the other night, and I saw a knockdown,” said Sugar Ray Leonard. “I’m not a guru. I’m not a psychic but I did see a knockdown.”

Leonard may not have any supernatural powers, but his dominance at welterweight often seemed other-worldly. He had two reigns as WBC Welterweight champion and one as WBA champion from 1979 to 1982, defending his crowns successfully five times over the period.

One of those defenses was the 1981 fight of the year. Leonard knocked out Thomas Hearns in the fourteenth round of one of the division’s classic bouts.

“I remember that time so vividly in my mind,” Leonard said Friday. “It was a fight for the undisputed welterweight crown. This fight was very special because Tommy’s dominance in the division was just amazing in the way he just annihilated people. He didn’t just knock guys out. He flattened guys.

“It was a fight of survival,” Leonard continued. “Tommy brought the best out of me and I brought the best out of him. It was one of the fights that took me to the limit. It required every ounce of me physical, mentally, psychologically, and spiritually. It took all of those factors to beat Tommy Hearns.”

Hearns was also on hand to compare Mayweather-Mosley to his own welterweight super fight.

“As far as me and Ray Leonard, our fight was so huge that no one knew what the outcome would be,” said Hearns. “I believe in giving the fans what they paid to see. It wasn’t about holding back or saving something for tomorrow or the next time. This is a moment. This is what you have to give them right now. You have to give your best.”

The years haven’t erased the competitive fire in either man, however, as both Leonard and Hearns took jabs at each other while recalling the bout.

“Ray said he has never danced before. I know he danced a few times when we fought,” said Hearns.

“I guess I wasn’t concerned about his punching,” said Leonard. “But at one point I recall, he hit me with a good shot, with a right hand, and I realized I could take a shot. That’s why I became more aggressive.”

As for the preview of Saturday’s fight, both legends seemed to be leaning toward Mayweather.

“I give him the edge mainly because how can you go against success?” said Leonard. “He’s 40-0, and I’ve yet to see him hurt or knocked down, but on other hand I see Shane Mosley as a guy who can penetrate the defenses of Mayweather, because no one has been able to penetrate that impeccable defense.”

“With the length of time Mosley was inactive, I think that fight will spark the juice that he needs that will erase the ring rust,” continued Leonard. “This is going to be a very good competitive fight. I think it’s going to be a chess match. Mayweather will be a counter puncher until he sees that Mosley is not what he used to be.”

Hearns agreed. “I think Mayweather is going to come out and try to dominate the fight by using his ability to move. I think Shane will try to test him and see how well he can take a shot. We have not yet gotten to see how well Mayweather can take a shot, and Shane has the ability to punch.”

“I think Mayweather should do pretty well with his style,” concluded Hearns.

The two rivals were on the same page on the outcome. They also agreed with each other on the fight’s place in history–somewhere below their own fight.

“I don’t see it being the same as me and Ray,” said Hearns. “We set the standard and it’s going to be tough to top what we did. Ray brought the best out of me and I think I brought the best out of him. It’s going to be a great fight this Saturday night, but don’t look for the same thing as happened in our fight. That was a different era.”

“I don’t see Mayweather-Mosley matching our fight,” agreed Leonard. “It’s a fight that’s been talked about for decades. I think it will be a great one though.”

If anyone could recognize a “great one,” it would be Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has already advised his boys not to take opposition team Afghanistan too lightly and teammate Yuvraj was also concerned about the X-factor of their contenders.

“It can be dangerous when you don’t know what the opposition is like. After ten overs you will end up in a situation when you don’t know what you are going to do.

“They have a cricket culture in their country. It is not that somebody has just sprung up from nowhere. They definitely have that little bit of cricket in them. We need to be on top of our game tomorrow,” said Yuvraj.

In view of that a defeat on Saturday can endanger their Super Eights aspirations; India is expected to put its best men forward.

India's top batting line-up has been prepared with the occurrence of Murali Vijay, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina. Following them are the charismatic players like Yusuf Pathan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Ravindra Jadeja, whose credulity pushed him out of the IPL, is so fearless that can use his bent for good down the order. His perfect left-arm spin works wonders along with Zaheer Khan, Asish Nehra, Praveen Kumar chase for runs.

Harbhajan Singh, Pathan and Yuvraj have toughened the bowling making it strong to defend itself and prepare it well enough for the big event.

While, Afghanistan has also prepared itself that it claims on the top its voice that they have a few tricks with them and can surprise Indians.

“It is good that they don’t know us because when they know about you they will plan. Luckily, we know everything about them. We have seen all their IPL games. We will give them a surprise which will make them remember us after the game,” Afghan coach Kabir Khan said.

Skipper Nowroz Mangal has all his expectations upon opening batsman Karim Sadiq, Noor Ali Zadran, who proved themselves by hitting centuries in their debut matches against Zimbabwe. Fast bowler Hamid Hasan and Shahpoor Zadran are also geared up to fire the pitch.

“Having survived in refugee camps and fought for food and clothes all their life, they are not used to defeat. They could surprise India,” said Karim.

With such a courage and zeal to stand high Afghanistan can shake its opponents as they said they are used to defeats they have no fear but those who are in against them if they lose they can earn disgrace which is not good for them.

Afghanistan: Nawroz Mangal (C), Mohammad Nabi, Karim Sadiq, Mirwais Ashraf, Rais Ahmadzai, Dawlat Ahmadzai, Mohammad Shahzad, Hamid Hassan, Samiullah Shinwari, Noor Ali, Asghar Stanikzai, Shahpoor Zadran, Shabir Noori, Sayed Nasrat, Shafiq Shafaq.

Birmingham City vs Burnley Live: Heading Towards Each Other

Birmingham City vs Burnley

Birmingham City vs Burnley

Birmingham ensures guard Scott Dann, who lost the 1-0 beat by Villa last week. If well then he will come back to the centre of defence, along with Liam Ridgewell at the left-back in the position of Gregory Vignal.

Birmingham tops with approximately 300 goals approved in the Premier League but suddenly failed to score last two.

Burnley were demoted in their first season in Premier League, when they lost with 4-0 to Liverpool. With Liverpool it was their 6th defeat in seven games coming back without Clarke Carlisle, Chris McCann and Kevin McDonald.

Now see what experts have to say: Alex McLeish: “I would think that if Shay Given is out for a few months, Joe Hart would be Manchester City’s goalkeeper in August. We have been looking for some time at the possibilities if Joe was to leave us. He has been superb for us and saved and won us many points and has been outstanding this season.”

Brian Laws: "There is an outside chance [that Burnley will qualify for Europe despite being relegated] and that depends on how Fulham go on. If they win the competition we have a chance of slipping in there. That would be fantastic for the club and the town. It is a long shot but we will wait and see what happens. Our work does not stop. It is actually the start of our work to get things ready for the start of next season.”"

This season Burnley ahead with 2 and Birmingham is on 1 while previously the scores were balanced with both teams scores Burnley 1 and Birmingham 1.
