Stros Pitcher Oswalt Still A Valuable Commodity As He Asks For Trade Posted: 22 May 2010 11:11 PM PDT Houston, TX, United States (AHN) – With trade speculation brewing in Houston, Astros starting pitcher Roy Oswalt remains a valuable commodity if another team can make a deal for the veteran. Oswalt, a three-time MLB all-star, has demanded a trade following a poor start for the Houston Astros. Despite a 2-6 record, the 32-year-old Oswalt continues to compile solid stats with a 2.66 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 8.85K/9 ratio. Oswalt also recorded 60 strikeouts and 16 walks for the struggling Astros (14-27), who are 9 1-2 games behind NL Central leader St. Louis Cardinals (24-18). Oswalt, arguably the most durable hurler in Astros uniform, logged in at least 30 starts per season for the Astros since 2002. Baseball followers think Oswalt's decision to throw more off-speed pitches, like change-ups, contributed to his early-season success. However, some analysts believe the aging pitcher will likely experience some struggles as the season progresses. Nonetheless, Oswalt remains a valuable commodity for any team, especially contenders, if a trade is executed by the Astros. Astros general manager Ed Wade said the pitcher's no-trade clause could impede any negotiations, however. “There is no rule that allows a player in his contract status to demand a trade. So demand, request, hold your breath until you turn blue, it’s all the same. It’s acknowledged and noted.” Wade told yahoo.com. League sources cited Oswalt's big contract as another factor that could halt trade discussions. Oswalt, in the fourth of a five-year, $73-million deal will be tough to move, especially in a highly volatile economic situation. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Chris Wood Grabs European PGA Lead; Karlsson Cards Course Record 62 Posted: 22 May 2010 11:47 AM PDT Surrey, United Kingdom (AHN) – Robert Karlsson of Sweden started the third round of the BMW European PGA Championship at the bottom of the leaderboard Saturday. He barely made the three-over-par cut after rounds of 75 and 70. He wasted no time making his move in the third round. All he did was birdie five of his first seven holes, made the turn in 30, then added four birdies coming in for a course record 62, nine-under-par that propelled Karlsson within two shots of the lead going into Sunday’s final round. Karlsson had to scramble just to get to the golf course for his Saturday tee time. He left town Friday, thinking he had missed the cut. When he found out he was in the weekend field, he spent $11,000 for a private jet to get him back to London. Fortunately he’s now in a position to realize a big return on the $11,000. If he’s going to win, he’ll have to overtake 6-5 Englishman Chris Wood. Wood, the 2009 Rookie of the Year, turned in a 67 and finished the third round in the lead at eight-under after 54 holes. “I didn’t feel like I hit the ball that well,” Wood said following his solid scoring effort. “But I scored that well. Hopefully I’ll hit the ball a little bit better tomorrow.” Karlsson’s round at the Wentworth west course was flawless. He had nine birdies, nine pars. Tied with Karlsson at six-under was Danny Willett, another 22-year-old who was an amateur teammate of Wood. Willett, the first-round leader, followed his 65-72 rounds with a one-under effort for his 207 total. Luke Donald, the 36-hole leader, struggled with some of his approach shots and finished the day with 72 and found himself three off Wood’s pace. Defending champion Paul Casey could only manage a 72, as did Paddy Harrington. They headed a group of five players who found themselves five shots behind going into the final 18 holes. But it was Karlsson who was the talk of the tournament for his course record, a record that almost wasn’t. He’ll stay in town this time, and can look forward to his pairing with Wood in Sunday’s final round. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |

Wie Wins, Faces World’s Top Player, Shin, At Sybase Posted: 22 May 2010 10:39 AM PDT Gladstone, NJ, United States (AHN) – Michelle Wie’s play has been nothing but solid through the first two days of the LPGA’s Sybase Match Play at the Hamilton Farm Golf Club. She has taken advantage of her length and improved putting and that’s the formula she used Saturday morning to defeat Karine Icher of France, 3-and-2. Wie and Angela Stanford were the only two American players able to advance into the quarterfinals. Wie will face the world’s top-ranked female golfer, Jiyai Shin of Korea in an afternoon match. sports, lifestyle and leisure, human interest, adventure, climbing, offbeat, curiosity Posted: 22 May 2010 10:38 AM PDT United States (AHN) – Former Portland Trail Blazers center Chris Dudley made headlines Thursday, when he captured the Republican nomination for Governor of Oregon. The 45-year-old Dudley seized 39.6 percent of 94.5 percent of counted precincts (as of Thursday afternoon), beating last election runner-up Allen Alley (32 percent), and John Lim (14.9 percent). Dudley's opponent in November 2 general elections will be Democratic Party gubernatorial bet John Kitzhaber. Kitzhaber, Oregon's governor from 1995 to 2003, claimed 68.5 percent of the votes to beat two other aspirants in the Democratic Primary. Incumbent Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a Democrat, will also step down from the post after two terms (2004-2010 ). Political analysts believe Dudley faces a huge task of upsetting Kitzhaber, considering Oregon is a deep blue state. However, Dudley remains resilient his campaign and visions for the state will power him to victory in the gubernatorial race. After playing 15 seasons in the NBA, Dudley pursued a career in financial services and wealth management business. In spite of hectic schedule, Dudley has remained active in the community by assisting children affected by juvenile diabetes through the Chris Dudley Foundation. Dudley, who looks to end the Democrats' six-term stranglehold in the state, said he has "fresh ideas" for the state once elected. Known for his rebounding and shot blocking abilities, Dudley spent majority of his career with the Blazers. Meanwhile, former Dallas Mavericks and BYU center Shawn Bradley will also engage in politics after filling his candidacy for the 44th District seat in the Utah House of Representatives. The 7-6 Bradley will serve as the Republican bet against incumbent Democratic Rep. Tim Cosgrove in the Nov.2 general elections. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
U.S. Teen Is Youngest To Summit Mount Everest Posted: 22 May 2010 10:36 AM PDT Kathmandu, Nepal (AHN) – Thirteen-year-old Californian Jordan Romero and his mountaineering team reached the top of Mount Everest on Saturday to set a new world record for the youngest person to reach the top of the world's highest peak. Romero, who called by satellite phone from the top of Mount Everest, beat the record set by Nepalese Temba Tsheri, who reached the top of Mount Everest at the age of 16. Romero and his team, which included his father and stepmother, climbed from the Tibet side of the mountain as there is age restriction to climbers in Nepal. The boy was among 50 climbers who reached the top of Mount Everest Saturday. One of the climbers, Apa Sherpa, also broke his own record for the most number of times a climber reached the top of the treacherous mountain. It was Apa's 20th summit to the mountain. Lindland Mauls Casey In Strikeforce Challengers 8 Posted: 22 May 2010 10:34 AM PDT Portland, Oregon, United States (AHN) – Matt Lindland ended his losing streak emphatically, with a mauling of Kevin Casey in the main event of Strikeforce Challengers 8 in Portland Friday night. The 40-year old Olympic medalist and former UFC Middleweight contender won for the first time since July, 2008 and recorded his first knockout in three and a half years by stopping Casey with a series of strikes at 3:41 of the third round. Lindland had lost two straight bouts, by knockout and submission, and another submission loss gave him a 1-3 record in his last four outings. Fighting in his hometown of Portland against a third-year pro in his fifth career fight got Lindland back on track, however. Casey couldn't compete with Lindland's veteran wrestling experience. Lindland recorded knockdowns in the opening seconds of all three rounds, controlling Casey from the top and pounding him with hammer fists and elbows to the body. Midway through the first round, Casey rallied. Lindland caught him in a guillotine choke, but Casey was able to escape and got a takedown of his own. In the ensuing scramble, Casey managed to regain control, and Lindland spent most of the last two minutes of the round fighting off Casey's rear naked choke attempts. In the final half minute, Lindland escaped and closed out the round with a series of knees, ending Casey's only real chance for an upset. In the second round, Lindland spent more than four minutes on top. He incapacitated Casey with a crucifix in the final 30 seconds of the frame, but Casey was able to withstand a barrage of hammer fists to close the round. Lindland posted a takedown in the first 30 seconds of round three, then spent three minutes raining down strikes before the referee finally waved off the bout at 3:41 of the third. "He had a head like a piece of rock," said a tired Lindland after the bout. "My team did a good job wrapping my hands, and it's a good thing I didn't break them, because I hit him with some shots." Lindland's seventh career knockout gave him a 22-7 record. Casey fell to 3-2, snapping a three-bout win streak. Local fighter Nathan Coy was not as fortunate as Lindland. Coy dropped a closer-than-expected split decision to undefeated welterweight prospect Tyron Woodley. Woodley went to decision for the first time in his career after winning four first-round submissions and one in the second. Woodley gained back control in all three rounds, but Coy was able to fight off a variety of submission attempts, including being saved by the bell while trapped in a Woodley armbar in the second round. Coy tied up Woodley early and landed leg kicks throughout, which seemed to sap his foe’s energy. Coy spent the final two minutes of the fight on top of Woodley. "Going into the third round I thought I was ahead, but I wasn't just trying to hang onto it," Woodley said. "At the end of the third round, I realized I'm in Portland. I don't want to leave it in the judge's hands." His fears proved to be well-founded as one judge had the hometown Coy winning by a generous 30-27 score. The other two judges gave Woodley the win by split decision with matching 29-28 scorecards. AHN's unofficial scorecard agreed with the majority, giving Woodley the first two rounds. "I think I was a little sloppy, and I think it cost me the fight," said Coy. "I gave up position too many times." Woodley moved to 6-0. Coy fell to 8-3. In addition to the main event, Challengers 8 had two other bouts where 20-fight veterans tested up-and-coming MMA prospects. Undefeated welterweight Roger Bowling won an injury-shortened decision over veteran Bobby Voelker. Like fellow undefeated prospect Woodley, Bowling fought in the third round for the first time in his career after four first-round knockouts and two early submissions, along with one knockout 14 seconds into the second. Bowling looked ready to add to his first-round dominance. He took down Voelker at the opening bell and pummeled him wit ha series of lefts, opening up a cut by Voelker's left eye. Both fighters stood up, and Bowling continued to batter Voelker with big power shots, but the veteran was able to withstand the assault. In the second round, Bowling floored Voelker with a big left hand, and had a powerful slam takedown later in the round. Bowling seemed to tire in the third round. His activity level slowed, and Voelker notched an early takedown. Midway through the round, the two fighters worked against the cage, and Voelker ran his glove across Bowling's face. The move inadvertently injured Bowling's right eye, and he was unable to continue the fight. "I got a fingernail in the eye. I can't open it, and they wouldn't let me continue," Bowling said after the bout, apologizing to the unhappy Portland crowd. All three judges gave Bowling the victory, 29-28, matching AHN's unofficial scorecard. Bowling moved to 8-0. Voekler fell to 21-8. The other prospect couldn't pass his veteran test. Lightweight Bryan Travers lost a unanimous decision to Portland journeyman Pat Healy. Travers dominated the first few minutes of the fight with strong striking, but seemed to slow late in the first round. Healy took control in the second round, lifting and slamming Travers on powerful takedowns four times in the frame. Healy added a nice suplex in the third round to seal the fight. Two judges gave Healy a 29-28 decision, while the third thought he did enough late in the first round to take a 30-27 victory. AHN's unofficial scorecard had it 29-28 for Healy. "I outpaced him a little bit towards the end," said Healy. Healy moved to 23-15, winning his third straight and fifth in his last six bouts. Travers fell to 13-2, losing for the first time since late 2006. In the final undercard bout, welterweight Tarec Saffiedine got a knockout victory over Nate Moore. Saffiedine stunned moore with a left right combination in the first round, and a nice flying knee at the bell put an exclamation point on the round. In the second, a left uppercut put Moore on the mat. Moore scrambled to his feet and a huge overhand right from Saffiedine ended it at 1:21 of the second. Saffiedine moved to 9-2 with his first career knockout. Moore fell to 6-2. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |

Kyle Busch Scores Truck Win In Charlotte Posted: 22 May 2010 07:00 AM PDT
Busch, who sat on the pole for the race, scraped the wall and held off Todd Bodine in a two-lap dash to score the second win in his last five starts. "This team did a great job in preparing a great truck to come out here with. Unfortunately, I tried to screw it up. I guess the driver owes the owner a little bit of money tonight. That won't go over well tomorrow,” said Busch. “It was fun there tonight, we made it interesting I guess. Not wanting to do it, but did it anyway." Busch’s No. 18 Toyota crossed the finish line .228 seconds ahead of Bodine, giving Toyota its first truck win at the 1.5-mile racetrack, while Ron Hornaday ran third and was followed by James Buescher and Elliott Sadler. The win was Busch’s third straight NASCAR win in it top-3 touring series and the 18th truck win of his career. "One of the things with the double file restart is that everybody makes such a big deal if you're on the outside or inside and if the leader takes the outside or the inside. It's a big deal, but it's not as big of a deal as you make out,” said Bodine of the runner-up finish. “The leader has the advantage of when he's going to go and it's so hard to time it and go when he goes." Bodine leads the series standings by two over Aric Almirola, who finished seventh following his first career NASCAR win last weekend at Dover. On Lap 40 of 134-lap race, Busch slammed the outside wall, damaging the front splitter, and had to work his way back to the front after losing positions. Busch regained the lead when Elliott Sadler made a green-flag pit stop on Lap 67. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
