Baltimore, MD, United States (AHN) – Jockey Calvin Borel looks to sustain his great four-year run in Triple Crown racing, as he gets back on Kentucky derby winner Super Saver in the 135th Preakness Stakes Saturday.

Borel eyes his second Preakness Stakes championship after guiding Rachel Alexandra – the 2009 Horse of the Year – to a first place victory in last year's race.

Now riding WinStar Farm-owned Super Saver, Borel remains as one of the top contenders to win the second leg of the Triple Crown series.

Super Saver, which came from a lineage of Derby and Triple Crown winners, captured the Kentucky Derby in a terrific fashion at 2:04.45.

With a streaking Super Saver, Borel has a great chance of increase his victories to four in the last 10 Triple Crown races.

Borel has been one of the most successful jockeys in the Triple Crown Race in past few years, winning aboard Mine That Bird in the 2009 Kentucky Derby and Rachel Alexandra last year.

The Lousiana native also placed second on Street Sense in the 2007 Preakness and third aboard Denis of Cork in the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Mine That Bird in the 2009 Belmont.

The 43-year-old Borel said his never-ending enthusiasm for the game motivates him to perform at his best.

“When I get up every day, it’s a good day,” Borel told Chicago Tribune Friday. “That’s because I love the game.”

Chelsea Clinch League, Cup Double In Gritty Win Over Portsmouth

Posted: 15 May 2010 11:31 AM PDT

AHN Sports Correspondent

London, United Kingdom (AHN) – It was an FA Cup final that pitted the recently crowned Champions of the Premier League, Chelsea, against the league’s most troubled club, already relegated and financially troubled Portsmouth.

Chelsea, on the brink of acheiving a first league and cup double in its history.

Portsmouth, meanwhile, was on the verge on an uncertain future in England’s second tier.

As such it was expected Pompey would be there only to make up the numbers in a comfortable Chelsea win, but as is so often the case in soccer, it wasn’t quite so straightforward.

An entertaining and surprisingly open contest saw both sides threaten.

Chelsea saw more of the ball but Portsmouth, aided by the frame of the goal which was struck five times in the first half alone, held its own.

It looked like Portsmouth was rewarded for dogged determination in the face of adversity when it won a penalty.

With the scores still level at 0-0 this was Portsmouth’s shot at glory.

Kevin Prince Boateng strode confidently forward but Petr Cech made a world class save to deny debt-ridden Pompey.

Having survived the scare, Chelsea sensed it would have to sharpen up or face a humilating defeat.

As he has before, and will again, Didier Drogba showed a flash of brilliance to win it for the Londoners.

Having been denied by the post all afternoon, the Ivorian now found it much more forgiving as his free-kick went in off the upright to spark scenes of wild celebration as Chelsea closed in on history.

First though another piece of history was to be made.

Chelsea was awarded a penalty of itsown with only a few minutes to go

Frank Lampard with the chance to calm the nerves.

Instead Lampard wrote an unwelcome piece of history as he missed the second penalty of the final, the first time two have been missed in a final in it’s 125+ year history.

In the end it wasn’t to matter as Chelsea held on to send its fans into raptures and Portsmouth’s into a long summer of uncertainty.

NFL Teams Reportedly Interested In Hiring CFL GM Popp

Montreal, QC, Canada (AHN) – National Football League teams are reportedly showing interest in hiring Montreal Alouettes general manager Jim Popp, multiple sources reported Saturday.

Popp, the long-time Alouettes GM in the Canadian Football League, has suddenly emerged as a highly sough executive this offseason.

Sources reported Popp is currently considering a jump into the NFL after spending 14 seasons with the Alouettes.

Popp is recognized among the most successful general manager in CFL, winning three Grey Cup titles (Baltimore Stallions in 1995, Montreal Alouettes in 2002 and 2009).

Speculations circulated Popp's family decision to move in the U.S could likely force the GM to assume a role in the NFL.

The sale of his residence in Montreal has been pointed as an indication of Popp's family’s readiness to cross the border.

In spite of the rumors, Popp has reportedly been in negotiations to re-up with the Alouettes since he entered the final year of his contract.

The 46-year-old Popp has admitted to receiving previous offers from the NFL and even told his strong ties with several NFL general managers.

Several reports also indicated the Washington Redskins are pursuing Popp, who led the Alouettes to 14 consecutive playoff stints and 7 Grey Cup appearances in 10 seasons.

Assistant GM Marcel Desjardins is expected to replace Popp, if the GM decides to start a career in the NFL.

New Orleans, LA, United States (AHN) – New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb underwent sports hernia surgery Friday after sustaining the injury during offseason workouts.

The 30-year-old Stinchcomb proceeded to sports hernia surgery Friday in Philadelphia.

Saints players and event coordinators said Stinchcomb was not able to host the AllFax Specialties Classic Friday because of the surgery.

AllFax Specialties Classic is a charity golf tournament for Children’s Hospital at Beau Chene Country Club in which Stinchcomb was partnered with.

Stinchcomb is expected to recover around 3-4 weeks after surgery, just in time for the opening of training camp on July 29.

Stinchcomb joined tight end Jeremy Shockey, defensive end Will Smith, safety Usama Young, linebacker Jonathan Vilma, cornerback Jabari Greer, and offensive tackle Jammal Brown among players who underwent sports hernia surgery in the past two years.

Surgeon Dr. William Meyers performed the surgery at a Philadelphia medical center Friday.

The Saints said the increasing incidence of sports hernia surgeries is caused by the advent of more advanced technology to evaluate the injury.

With this modernistic diagnostic procedure, players are treated immediately and experienced fast recovery rates.

Ortiz, Red Sox Heating Up; Papi Belts Pair Of Homers In Win

Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – Designated hitter David Ortiz continued his improved hitting Friday, as he blasted two homers to help the Boston Red Sox top the Detroit Tigers7-2 at Comerica Park in Detroit.

Ortiz, 34, got off to a slow start on the season, but now boasts a six-game hit streak despite platooning.

Ortiz, a five-time MLB all-star selection, also drove in four runs to power the streaking Red Sox to their eighth win in 13 games.

After struggling in the first month of the season, the Red Sox appear to be gaining some momentum as they try to make a move in the American League East standings.

The Red Sox are currently 5 1-2 games behind the league-leading Tampa Bay Rays at 24-11.

Ortiz, four-time Silver Slugger Award winner, is batting .333 (11-for-33) with five homers and 11 RBI in May after a terrible April in which the affable player even snapped at reporters..

Ortiz blasted a three-run homer in the fifth and followed up with a solo homer in the fourth inning to clinch Friday’s win for the Red Sox.

The slugger hopes to cut down on his strikeouts and make better contact at the plate.

He has already fanned 34 times in 89 at-bats, perhaps evidence of a slowing bat.

Ortiz is on pace for 36 doubles and 36 homers, which the Red Sox would gladly take.

Possible NHL City Winnipeg Already Boasts Puckloads Of Hockey History

Posted: 15 May 2010 10:31 AM PDT

Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor

Winnipeg, Canada (AHN) – While the Phoenix Coyotes remain in limbo on whether Arizona will remain their home, thoughts of the former come to mind in the team’s previous city of Winnipeg, where the Jets once played.

It has been speculated that Winnipeg is on the NHL’s schedule next season, just in case the Coyotes are sold.

Winnipeg lost its NHL team to Arizona after the 1996 postseason vs. the Detroit Red Wings.

Now, the city awaits the outcome in Arizona, while many reflect on the days of yore, when hockey legends traced their images in the hearts in just over two decades.

The Jets made history, spearheading the search for talent in Europe.

Players like the Swedish pair of forwards Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson joined Hall of Famer Bobby Hull. The group was known as the ‘Hot Line’ during the WHA before the team was absorbed by the NHL in 1979.

Hall-of-Famers Dale Hawerchuk, and players like Thomas Steen, Paul MacLean, Dave Babych, Randy Carlyle, Laurie Boschman, Doug Smail became a admirable force during the mid 80s.

Today Edmonton Oilers’ Nikolai Khabibulin, Teemu Selanne of the Anaheim Ducks, and Kris Draper (Detroit) and Shane Doan (Coyotes) are all among the ex-Jets remaining in the league.

Now the NHL, which bought the team from bankruptcy in the fall, is seeking a buyer, putting the hope back into the city of Winnipeg.

Chicago’s Jerry Reinsdorf backed out of purchasing the team after council members of the City of Glendale would not nod to the $45 million a year in subsidies, he was purposing.

Ice Edge Holdings, who was interested in purchasing the club, couldn’t agree on a lease Monday, adding to the rumor mill of the return of the team to Winnipeg.

All Jets fans can do is hope, and do a little reminiscing-and perhaps see their team return home.

Obama Backs LeBron Going To Bulls

Posted: 15 May 2010 05:10 AM PDT

Nathan Smith – AHN Sports Reporter

Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – President Barack Obama has added his opinion into the mix of where maybe the most sought after free agent in NBA history, LeBron James, might end up.

Obama, a former United States senator from Illinois and state senator from Chicago, would like to see “The King” end up as a member of the Chicago Bulls.

“He doesn’t want to tamper. But as a Chicago fan, but the President thinks LeBron would like great in a Bulls uniform,” said senior advisor to the president David Axelrod said.

James becomes a free agent on July 1. LeBron’s current team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, were eliminated in the NBA playoffs by the Boston Celtics on May 13.

Obama has not hid his love of sports in the past, showcasing his brackets for NCAA March Madness, and is frequently seen wearing a Chicago White Sox cap and has hosted the Bulls for a tour of the White House.

Not to be outdone, New York Mayor Michael Bloomburg commented on his weekly radio show about the prospect of James joining the New York Knicks.

“I think it would be great for New York if he comes here,” Bloomburg said. “If he calls me and says, what’s it like to live in New York, I’ll give him a big sales pitch for New York.”

Truex Captures Pole At Dover For Autism Speaks 400

Posted: 15 May 2010 05:10 AM PDT

Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Dover, DE, United States (AHN) – When it comes to Martin Truex Jr. Dover International Speedway has always been a special place.

The Monster Mile is where he earned his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win and Friday he had a return to glory when won the pole for Sunday’s Autism Speaks 400.

“It was a good lap. We had a really good practice today coming in. Unloaded in race trim obviously and made a run or two and felt real good about it so we went to qualifying. Qualifying this year is something we’ve kind of struggled with. And, Pat (Tryson, crew chief) and I sat down this week and talked about what we needed to do to get better at qualifying,” said Truex. “We put quite a bit of effort into coming up with a plan. Coming here — it worked for us. Real proud of Pat (Tryson, crew chief) and all the guys on the NAPA Toyota. They’ve been doing an awesome job lately.”

Wheeling the No. 56 of Michael Waltrip Racing, Truex turned a lap of 157.315 mph and edged Kasey Kahne for the front starting spot.

Mark Martin, Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson comprised the top-five spots, while the top-10 was rounded out by Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, AJ Allmendinger, Carl Edwards and Sam Hornish Jr.

“We weren’t that good in practice; 17th quickest. We weren’t expecting to be a pole contender, for sure. But you know, you never know. There are times when you think you’re going to be a pole contender you’re not and you wind up sorely disappointed, and today we really got a great lap,” said Martin. “Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) and I, though our experience here, made a judgment on some changes to the car. We hit it just right and I really got a great lap.”

Casey Mears, filling in for the ailing Brian Vickers in the No. 83 Toyota, qualified 39th and Johnny Sauter, wheeling Mears’ Tommy Baldwin Racing ride, grab the race’s final qualifying spot in 43rd.

Todd Bodine and Max Papis failed to qualify for the event.
