Cowboys’ Romo One Step Away From U.S. Open Spot Posted: 21 May 2010 11:00 AM PDT Dallas, TX, United States (AHN) – Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo drew closer to a spot in next month’s U.S Open Championship, carding a 2-under-par 69 and advancing through Thursday's local qualifier at The Honors Golf Club of Dallas. Romo birdied three of his last four holes to reach a playoff. He made par on each of the three extra holes to tie for fourth place and secure a spot in the USGA Sectional June 7 at the Club at Carlton Woods in the Woodlands. He joins six qualifiers and two alternates advancing to the sectional round, which will award spots in the U.S Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California (June 14-20). After playing in the sectional round, Romo is expected to attend the Cowboys last round of organized workouts (June 8-10). Romo looks to become the only professional athlete to qualify for the U.S Open. Former major league pitcher John Smoltz squandered his chance to move up from a sectional round on May 11. NFL punters Josh Scobee (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Ryan Longwell (Minnesota Vikings) also missed their opportunities to play in a sectional round. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
John Daly Stays Positive About Comeback; Tweets Message To Fans Posted: 21 May 2010 10:59 AM PDT Tampa, Florida, United States (AHN) – John Daly has struggled in his return to competitive golf but things took a turn for the good two weeks ago in San Antonio. His start at the Valero Texas Open was flat out lousy. A 77 left him looking like another missed cut was in the making. Then something clicked. Daly did the 10-shot turn, shooting a 5-under-par 67 and made the cut at even par. It looked even better after the third round. He shot a nice 69 and moved to two-under and was suddenly within striking distance of the lead. Then something happened. “My hip has been worked on all week and just keeps popping out,” he wrote on his Twitter page. He was 5-over after five holes and withdrew in the final round. “Going home for an MRI,” he wrote. Suddenly, there was total uncertainty for the man whose middle name is “struggle.” Daly received decent new this week after his MRI. No surgery required. He has two bulging discs in in his lower back (L4, L5), and a torn ligament near his hip, but according to JD “the hip is just fine.” He tweeted early this week: “Going to get it injected and start some strengthening exercises. Good news, no surgery.” As for the injection, it happened on Thursday. “Don’t ya’ll count me out! I just got shot with a 5″ basting needle in the back. I was hittin’ balls today. See ya’ll at Colonial,” he tweeted late Thursday. So look for Daly to be back this coming week in Forth Worth, Texas, at the Colonial. Apparently he’s good to go. The comback will continue. Celtics’ Perkins Stars In Physical Supporting Role Posted: 21 May 2010 10:58 AM PDT Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – Kendrick Perkins looks to continue his outstanding play at center for the Boston Celtics, who are looking to take a 3-0 advantage over the Orlando Magic in the Western Conference final series Saturday. Perkins has provided a solid frontcourt presence in the postseason, averaging 6.4 points and 6.7 rebounds in 25.8 minutes per game. Perkins also played well in Game 2, when he contributed 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks in only 15 minutes. Perkins' tenacity and interior presence have made him valuable for the Celtics this postseason. After facing Jermaine O'Neal in the opening round, Perkins stood his ground against two of the most dominant big men in the game – the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Shaquille O’Neal and Magic ’s Dwight Howard. Celtics coaches and teammates also recognized the strong efforts of Perkins, who has taken some serious punishment for three consecutive series. Drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2003, Perkins was immediately traded to Boston along with Marcus Banks for Troy Bell and Dahntay Jones. Perkins was also a key piece throughout the Celtics’ championship campaign in 2008. Perkins, arguably the most durable player in Celtic uniform, played all 82 regular season tilts while averaging a career-high 10.1 points. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |

Sixers Hire Doug Collins For Coach Post Posted: 21 May 2010 06:05 AM PDT NBA Philadelphia, PA, United States (AHN) – The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly found their next head coach Thursday, hiring TNT analyst Doug Collins with a four-year deal. League sources reported Thursday Collins' hiring is expected to be announced tentatively Monday after agreeing to a four-year deal with the Sixers. Collins, who worked with the TNT crew as a color analyst, will assume the coaching post left open by Eddie Jordan. The Sixers president and general managers Ed Stefanski fired Jordan on April 15, after the coach led the team to a 27-55 record – fifth-worst record in the NBA. Stefanski remained silent about the reports but offered some indication of a coming announcement. “We are talking now to make sure that we have come up with the right decision. But I won’t get into any particular coach that we are talking to or confirm anything. I have no comment on that,” Stefanski told the Philadelphia Inquirer Thursday. Collins attended an interview with Stefanski and other Sixers officials on May 1. The 58-year-old Collins beat out several high-profile coaches and assistants, including former Mavericks coach Avery Johnson, former Raptors Sam Mitchell, and Suns assistant Dan Majerle. Collins (332-287) coached the Chicago Bulls (1986–1989), Detroit Pistons (1995–1998), and the Washington Wizards (2001–2003) before joining the TNT crew as a regular color analyst. Sources reported Collins will form a coaching staff composed of longtime assistant Brian James, Michael Curry, and former Sixers standout Aaron McKie. The value of the contract is expected to be announced in the coming days. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Tiger, Tiger burning bright : A great mix of Tennis and Poetry Posted: 21 May 2010 05:32 AM PDT Matt Harvey Here is a great news for the lovers of poetry and tennis. A little surprising, but both have accepted the value of each other more deeply with Wimbledon appointing the renowned poet, Matt Harvey; and the poet giving a positive view by accepting the offer. Matt Harvey is a renowned British humorist and poet. He has published various books, and also contributes to the national radio. Accepting the offer, he’s already ready with his first contribution toward tennis, “The Grandest of Slams.” The poem starts like, "Excuse me. I'm sorry. I speak as an/ Englishman. For the game of lawn tennis there's no better symbol than Wimbledon." |
Strikeforce `Challengers` Gets Infusion of Experience Friday Night Posted: 21 May 2010 03:52 AM PDT Shawn Krest – AHN Sports Correspondent Portland, Oregon, United States (AHN) – Strikeforce offers up one of the most experienced Challengers cards in recent memory Friday night in Portland, Oregon. Showtime and Strikeforce use the Challengers cards to spotlight up and coming MMA prospects. However Friday’s Challengers 8 features three 20-win fighters. To put that in perspective, the three most experienced fighters Friday night in Portland have combined for 64 career wins and 29 losses. By comparison, all ten fighters on the televised portion of Challengers 7 in March combined for a 70-14-1 record. The last three Challengers cards have only seen a total of two 20-win fighters. One of those is fighting again Friday night. The average Challengers participant over the last three cards has entered the cage with a career record of just over eight wins and one and a half losses. Friday’s fighters have an average of three and a half more wins and an extra two losses. Topping the card is former Olympic wrestling silver medalist Matt Lindland. “The Law” could hardly be considered a prospect. He is 40 years old and has been fighting since 1997. Lindland fought in the UFC for five years, including a shot at the welterweight title. He last fought there in 2005 and has dropped three of his last four bouts. He will be fighting in his hometown, and facing a student of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Kevin Casey. Casey more closely fit’s the mold of a Challengers fighter. He has won three straight bouts since dropping his pro debut. His most recent fight was in Challengers 5, where he put away Chad Vance with a first-round submission. While Lindland’s recent record may indicate that he is close to the end, the losing streak has also come against top opposition. Lindland’s last three losses were against Fedor Emelianenko, who is perhaps the sport’s best heavyweight, Vitor Belfort, who knocked out Rich Franklin in his next bout, and Ronaldo “Jakare” Souza, who won on the most recent Strikeforce card. The second member of the 20-win club on Friday’s card is 21-7 Bobby Voelker. The 31-year old Voelker fought on the televised undercard on Challengers 5, knocking out Erik Apple in the second round. Four of his last five bouts have been knockout victories. He will provide a stern test for undefeated welterweight prospect Roger Bowling, who is 7-0 with five knockouts and two submissions. His most recent bout was a knockout of Jerrod Appenzeller, 14 seconds into round two. It’s the only fight in his short career that has lasted longer than 3:20. Bowling’s resume includes flash knockouts that took just 41, 28, and nine seconds. The 28 second bout gave Challengers veteran Shamar Bailey his first career loss, and the nine-second blowout was against current Ultimate Fighter contestant Seth Baczynski. The final twenty-win fighter on the bill is Pat “Bam Bam” Healy. The 22-15 Healy has fought on WEC and Ultimate Fight Night cards in his career, and is actually riding a hot streak, with four wins in his last five outings. He will face prospect Bryan Travers, who is 13-1. Travers is a former Division I wrestler, who has gone the distance in four of his last five wins. He’s fought as high as heavyweight, but will be competing at 155 pounds Friday night. Two other televised bouts will match prospects. Undefeated welterweight Tyron “T Wood” Woodley, at 6-0, will face off against Portland fighter Nathan Coy, 8-2. Woodley has submissions in all six of his fights and has won his last three fighting for Strikeforce. In the final bout, Nate Moore, 6-1 will fight Tarec Saffiedine, 8-2. Saffiedine won a unanimous decision at Challengers 6 in Feburary. Moore won by submission at Strikeforce/M1’s Fedor vs. Rogers undercard last November. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |

Agoal by Tom Pyatt and Dominic Moore for Montreal bagged their first victory in the series.Jaroslav Halak’s shutout bid was sabotaged by Philadelphia’s Simon Gagne who scored 8:22 into the third period. It was a shock for The Flyers who were at the cleanly swiped the opponents till now with six straight wins. The Canadiens are all set to perform their all time best and have started proving the same with Montreal's elimination drive crushing Washington and Pittsburgh. “We are a much better team when our backs are against the wall,” Gionta said. “We’ve dealt with it all year.” The Flyers had beaten their rivals with 13-0, grabbing 4-3 win against Boston in Game 7 of their second-round series. Pyatt gained during a jostle in front 10 minutes later, and after Pronger unexpectedly entangled with puck. The puck turned over to Moore, Moore's shot from the right circle got a jumper in front by Maxim Lapierre and gained inside of the right post. The puck spurted in front; where Pyatt caused it move in through his stick and skate. Phew, exclaimed Scott Gomez. “Hey, we’ve got to get one by him, whether you like it or not, that’s the only way we’re going to win,” Gomez shouted. Pointing to Cammalleri’s goal, he continued: “That kind of loosened everyone up. Let’s not kid ourselves.” The Canadians are surely emerging proudly after sinking low; with there glorious win over Flyers. They have begun to come over the deficit of 3-1 defeating Washington in the first round. |
