Marlins’ Hanley Ramirez Benched, Lashes Out At Manager Fredi Gonzalez Posted: 18 May 2010 10:55 PM PDT Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter Miami, FL, United States (AHN) – A divide may be quickly forming in the Marlins locker room after manager Fredi Gonzalez benched shortstop Hanley Ramirez for not hustling in a 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks Monday. Tuesday, Ramirez lashed out at his manager and offered no apology to his teammates for the incident.
Instead of being humbled, the heralded shortstop was obviously livid in talking to the Palm Beach Post. “It’s (Gonzalez’s) team, he can do whatever he [expletive] wants,” said Ramirez before Tuesday’s game, which he was also benched for. Ramirez also offered no apology to his teammates or the fans who help pay his $7 million salary, saying instead: “We’ve got a lot of guys dogging it after ground balls. They don’t apologize.” The five-year veteran also poked fun of the fact Gonzalez never played in the major leagues. Ramirez is batting .293 with 20 RBI and a team-high seven homers. Major Moves Could Help Bruins Put Historic Series Loss Behind Posted: 18 May 2010 12:39 PM PDT Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – After the Boston Bruins became the fourth pro team in North America to blow a three-game lead in the best-of-seven series vs. the Philadelphia Flyers, changes will be imminent for the club this offseason.
The club already has a pick left over in the Phil Kessel-Toronto deal, which they can obtain Taylor Hall or Tyler Sequin in June's draft. One could be a top forward. They also have another pick in the middle of the first round. Boston also needs an offensive punch. They had one of the worst offenses in the NHL this season. Calgary's Jarome Iginla, 33, could create that spark. Iginla scored 32 goals and 37 assists this season. But the club would take a $7 million hit to the cap if Iginla came onboard. To clear salary space-they could find former Vezina Trophy winner, Tim Thomas, a new team. The goalie lost his starting role and was demoted to backup by the end of the season. He could waive his no-trade clause in hopes of regaining his No. 1 post. Iginla could breathe life into an anemic offense, but he's just part of the answer for Boston. Chiarelli will have to make the bold choices to redeem the embarrassment taken by the Flyers. Another decision is whether to keep defenseman Dennis Seidenberg, whose salary is ballooning. Michael Ryder's big paycheck is something that Chiarelli is also surel to consider. Iginla or not, Boston has to make some bold moves to redeem themselves from such a horrific ending. After the loss, Boston joined the 1942 Red Wings, 1975 Penguins, and 2004 Yankees in losing a series after taking a 3-0 advantage. Even with a 3-0 lead in the decisive game seven the B’s could not put the Flyers away. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Texans Wideout Andre Johnson Misses Optional Workout; Unhappy With Pact Posted: 18 May 2010 12:26 PM PDT Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor United States (AHN) – Houston Texans wideout and Pro Bowler Andre Johnson skipped OTAs Monday, and reportedly is unhappy with his long-term contract. Johnson, who collected $5.5 million last season, will make $5.8 million the following season, and has five years left on his current contract.
Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald ($40 million) and Miami’s Brandon Marshall ($47 million) inked lucrative deals, leading to the speculation that Johnson is unhappy about his present deal the news outlet said. “Over the first three years of that deal," Smith added. "I think he’s been outstanding but he’s been well compensated. He’s got five years left on his deal now. We’re willing to sit down and talk with him. He knows that.” Johnson led the league in receiving yards last season. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Marlins Shortstop Ramirez Sits After Failing To Hustle Posted: 18 May 2010 12:25 PM PDT Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor Miami, FL, United States (AHN) – Florida Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez sent All-Star shortstop Hanley Ramirez to the showers after his lax effort during the second inning vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday night.
Ramirez was stung after fouling a ball off his ankle during the first inning. Gonzalez, however, said that was not an excuse. “He got smoked with the ball in the ankle,” Gonzalez told MLB.com. “But whether he’s hurt or not hurt, we felt like the effort wasn’t there that we wanted. There are 24 guys out there, busting their butts.” “We expect an effort from 25 guys on this team, when that doesn’t happen, we’ve got to do something,” Gonzalez added, who disciplined his shortstop after the inning. Gonzalez also didn't rule out further discipline, though it could be unlikely. “More embarrassment than being taken out of a Major League game?” Gonzalez said. “We’ll see.” There were no comments from Ramirez. Mets Tumble Puts Manager Manuel On Hot Seat Posted: 18 May 2010 12:19 PM PDT Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor Queens, NY, United States (AHN) – After a horrendous weekend in Florida, the New York Mets were visited by the team's chief operating officer in Atlanta, telling reporters that no one was getting fired, although he met with manager Jerry Manuel and general manager Omar Minaya.
Wilpon reportedly flew to meet the team because he was interested in exchanging ideas with team officials, including assistant general manager John Ricco. "What am I going to do, hide?'' Wilpon asked, denying there was a crisis according to the New York Times. The report said that “Wilpon continued to deny that he was trying to create a crisis scenario around the club.” Wilpon, criticized in the past for not stepping up amid the poor play and injuries that plagued the team most of last season, said he’s taking a “hands-on approach.” The visit was also said to keep the Mets from slipping back into old habits after they won nine straight and then faltered, posting a 19-20 record. After the meeting with Wilpon, Manuel walked out of the office, and said to reporters "I've got a uniform on, don't I?'' He still did after the Mets eked out a 3-2 victory over the Braves Monday night, as well. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Former Wimbledon Champ Pat Cash Enjoying Role Coaching Team Australia Posted: 18 May 2010 12:09 PM PDT Corine Gatti – AHN Sports Contributor Melbourne, Australia (AHN) – Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash just loves it, his new job that is.
Cash, who is London based, can easily can get across Spain to meet with AIS coach Felix Mantilla, and TA’s men’s head tennis coach, Todd Woodbridge, at the training base in Barcelona. Cash has a tennis academy on the Gold Coast of Australia for a decade and has coached numerous top ranked Australian juniors. “I’d been waving my hand up in the air so long, I’d given up. Then, out of the blue, they asked," Cash said according to published reports. Cash has been critical of the TA in the past, but the organization held a presidential election with Stephen Healy replacing Geoff Pollard last fall. “I think everyone is trying to learn how to get along and work together better,” Cash said. “In saying that, I think some of the criticism they (TA) were copping was fair as well. And I think they’ve tried to address that." “One of the criticisms was there is so much expertise and former champions from your country and you’re not using any of them. So it’s nice to have a Wimbledon champion now working with Aussie kids when they get to Wimbledon.” Cash won Wimbledon in 1987 and at the Australian Open in 1987 and ‘88. He has 12 career titles. Posted: 18 May 2010 12:06 PM PDT Orlando Magic takes on Boston Celtics in the second game of the NBA Eastern Conference championship playoff series before the home crowd. Magic aims to leave behind the 88-92 loss in the first game as they gear up to compensate the defeat. Magic has been on a winning spree ever since the start of the season, which came to a halt after the previous match. The solid defense by the Celtics was too hard for Magic to handle. Their superstar Dwight Howard could not reach the expected level of performance good enough to set the scoreboard in their favor. Magic would be cautious in the upcoming game as not to allow too many misses spoiling their chances. Celtics coach Doc Rivers seemed extremely pleased and hoped that the team has regained its lost form. It should also be noted that Boston had the serious concern of injured players despite which they claimed victory. However, Magic seems to be the favorites for the second game. A defeat in the game 2 of the Orlando Magic takes vs Boston Celtics playoff would prove lethal for the former as they will have to face the opponent in Boston in the next two games of the series. |
Singh`s Sinking Ranking: Golfer Drops Out Of Top 50 Posted: 18 May 2010 03:37 AM PDT Matt Aug – AHN Sports Editor London, United Kingdom (AHN) – It was not along ago, 2004 in fact, that golfer Vijay Singh was ranked No. 1 in the world, ahead of even the great Tiger Woods. Singh’s game has slipped considerably, however, as he has fallen to No. 51 and may even have to qualify for the upcoming U.S. Open. It is the lowest ranking in nearly two decades for the humble, and now humbled, star. Singh has endured poor play in 2010, going five consecutive tournaments without notching points. It’s a stunning fall for a two-time PGA Championship and Masters title winner. Singh has reportedly been working hard at his short game, but has little to show for his effort, except for rising frustration. f Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Dwight Howard`s Offense Critical To Magic`s Success; Orlando Looks To Knot Series Posted: 18 May 2010 03:37 AM PDT AHN Sports Staff Orlando, FL, United States (AHN) – Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard looks to rebound from a shaky Game 1 performance as the Magic try to equalize their Eastern Conference finals series with the Boston Celtics Tuesday. Howard struggled to find his rhythm offensively, as he went 3-for-10 from the field to finish with 13 markers in Sunday’s series opener. After dominating the Hawks in four games, Howard found himself guarded by the Celtics veteran frontline led by Rasheed Wallace. Wallace, who struggled to mesh with the Celtics in the regular season, has suddenly become the Celts defensive instigator in the postseason. Howard was obviously bothered by Wallace’s pesky defense in committing seven turnovers – including two successive fumbles in the first half. Howard, who still collected 12 boards and 5 blocks, said he plans to play better basketball on the offensive end in Game 2. Three-point shooting also betrayed the Magic as Orlando shot 5-for-22 (.22 percent) from behind the arc. NBA followers believe Howard must find his way to the basket for the Magic to solve the Celts’ solid perimeter defense. Magic guard Vince Carter said the loss served as a “wake-up call” for the team to learn and move on for the next game. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Star Forward Henry To Play For MLS` Red Bulls After World Cup Posted: 18 May 2010 03:37 AM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor New York, NY, United States (AHN) – French international striker Thierry Henry, whose season with Barcelona ended Sunday, will reportedly play for his native France at the World Cup next month before joining the MLS’s New York Red Bulls. According to media reports, Henry, who will turn 33 on August, had an agreement with the Red Bulls. A report by SI.com indicated that Henry, who still has a year left on his contract with the Spanish La Liga club, and his camp had agreed on a deal in principle with the Red Bulls as long as three weeks ago. Despite his questionable playing status with Barca, no agreement to any sale has been made by the club, according to SI.com. In the event of deal, compensation would be demanded for the remainder of Henry’s contract as well as agreement on contingencies in the event of an injury at the World Cup. Henry, who played a key role in Barcelona’s all-dominating campaign in 2008-09, has ended with a disappointing season with the Spanish club as a result of injuries and inconsistent play. Signs indicating that the French star’s days with Barcelona are numbered manifested earlier this year. Henry has made only 14 appearances for the defending UEFA Champions League champs. In this year’s semifinals against Inter Milan, the club preferred to rely on two other players instead of tapping into Henry’s experience off the bench. Henry, who has long indicated his desire to live in New York, could provide a boost to the rebuilding Red Bulls, who despite of their impressive mark this season are perceived to be lacking championship material. Meanwhile, the Barcelona striker has denied reports that an agreement with the Red Bulls franchise has been made. In a Goal.com report, Henry has denied reports linking him to a transfer to the MLS side Red Bulls. Henry added that his future plans are limited to the upcoming World Cup in South Africa. The MLS transfer window is slated to open July 15. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
