Dwight Howard’s Offense Critical To Magic’s Success; Orlando Looks To Knot Series

AHN Sports Staff

Orlando, FL, United States (AHN) – Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard looks to rebound from a shaky Game 1 performance as the Magic try to equalize their Eastern Conference finals series with the Boston Celtics Tuesday.

Howard struggled to find his rhythm offensively, as he went 3-for-10 from the field to finish with 13 markers in Sunday's series opener.

After dominating the Hawks in four games, Howard found himself guarded by the Celtics veteran frontline led by Rasheed Wallace.

Wallace, who struggled to mesh with the Celtics in the regular season, has suddenly become the Celts defensive instigator in the postseason.

Howard was obviously bothered by Wallace's pesky defense in committing seven turnovers – including two successive fumbles in the first half.

Howard, who still collected 12 boards and 5 blocks, said he plans to play better basketball on the offensive end in Game 2.

Three-point shooting also betrayed the Magic as Orlando shot 5-for-22 (.22 percent) from behind the arc.

NBA followers believe Howard must find his way to the basket for the Magic to solve the Celts' solid perimeter defense.

Magic guard Vince Carter said the loss served as a "wake-up call" for the team to learn and move on for the next game.

Star Forward Henry To Play For MLS’ Red Bulls After World Cup

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – French international striker Thierry Henry, whose season with Barcelona ended Sunday, will reportedly play for his native France at the World Cup next month before joining the MLS's New York Red Bulls.

According to media reports, Henry, who will turn 33 on August, had an agreement with the Red Bulls.

A report by SI.com indicated that Henry, who still has a year left on his contract with the Spanish La Liga club, and his camp had agreed on a deal in principle with the Red Bulls as long as three weeks ago.

Despite his questionable playing status with Barca, no agreement to any sale has been made by the club, according to SI.com.

In the event of deal, compensation would be demanded for the remainder of Henry's contract as well as agreement on contingencies in the event of an injury at the World Cup.

Henry, who played a key role in Barcelona's all-dominating campaign in 2008-09, has ended with a disappointing season with the Spanish club as a result of injuries and inconsistent play.

Signs indicating that the French star's days with Barcelona are numbered manifested earlier this year.

Henry has made only 14 appearances for the defending UEFA Champions League champs.

In this year's semifinals against Inter Milan, the club preferred to rely on two other players instead of tapping into Henry's experience off the bench.

Henry, who has long indicated his desire to live in New York, could provide a boost to the rebuilding Red Bulls, who despite of their impressive mark this season are perceived to be lacking championship material.

Meanwhile, the Barcelona striker has denied reports that an agreement with the Red Bulls franchise has been made.

In a Goal.com report, Henry has denied reports linking him to a transfer to the MLS side Red Bulls.

Henry added that his future plans are limited to the upcoming World Cup in South Africa.

The MLS transfer window is slated to open July 15.

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Germany's World Cup bid sustained a major blow after it was revealed Monday that captain and Chelsea star Michael Ballack has been ruled out at this summer's event in South Africa due to an ankle injury.

Germany will have to make do without the services of experienced Ballack, who sustained the injury in Saturday's FA Cup final against Portsmouth following a reckless challenge by Kevin Prince-Boateng.

The reckless tackle of Boateng, who is in Ghana's team for the summer showpiece in South Africa, occurred in the 35th minute of Chelsea's Cup final victory at Wembley, forcing Ballack to leave the pitch limping.

A statement from the German FA indicated that the 33-year-old Chelsea midfielder sustained damages to the medial collateral ligament of his right ankle as revealed by an MRI scan in Munich Monday.

The injury forces Ballack out of action for two months. He will wear a cast for the next two weeks before he can start his recovery process.

Ballack was preparing to feature in his third World Cup for Germany prior to the injury. He has scored 42 goals in 98 appearances for his country.

Meanwhile, Boateng, a former Tottenham player, was born in Germany but later chose to play for Ghana, his father's country of birth

He also previously represented German youth teams.

In South Africa, Boateng could be part of the Ghana team that will collide against Germany in Group D at the finals in the World Cup.

Ironically, Kevin Prince could face his brother, Jerome Boateng, who is likely to make Germany's 23-man team.

Germany opens its Cup bid against Australia on June 13 before meeting Serbia and then Ghana.

Cleveland, OH, United States (AHN) – A package deal involving renowned coach John Calipari and Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James is reportedly being shopped in the NBA.

After the stunning loss to the Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals, speculations on the impending free agency of James have began picking up more.

A report in the Chicago Tribune indicated that basketball power broker William Wesley is trying to sell the Calipari-James package deal to NBA teams that have coaching vacancies and salary cap space.

Chicago, one of the reported teams targeted for the package deal, has indicated that it has necessary players to complement the two-time NBA MVP in the event he decides to choose the Bulls.

According to various reports, there has been no talks of bringing in Kentucky coach Calipari with James as part of the package.

Calipari, 51, who completed his first season with the Wildcats this year, was a fixture on the sidelines during playoff games in Chicago and Cleveland, leading to speculation he might leave Kentucky for the NBA.

In his coaching career, Calipari has one NBA stop as a head coach with the New Jersey Nets from 1996-99. He led the Nets to the playoffs in 1997-98.

After being shown the door during the 1998-99 campaign, he joined the Philadelphia Sixers as an assistant before going to Memphis in 2000.

Apart from the Cavaliers, other teams expected to participate in the James lottery are the New Jersey Nets, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks.

Blackhawks Exec Tallon To Take Over As Panthers General Manager

Sunrise, FL, United States (AHN) – Dale Tallon, credited for rebuilding the Chicago Blackhawks into a strong contender, has been hired as the general manager of the Florida Panthers.

On Tuesday, the 59-year-old Tallon, who spent the 2009-10 season as the senior advisor of hockey operations for the Blackhawks, will be formally announced as the ninth GM in the franchise history of the Panthers.

Tallon will take over the post vacated by Randy Sexton after only one season as the Panthers GM. He spent 33 years with the Hawks organization as a player, broadcaster and front office executive.

He became the Blackhawks GM in June 2005, before being reassigned from his post last summer following a mixup in the Hawks’ restricted free agents.

Under Tallon, the Blackhawks advanced to the Western Conference finals the past two seasons.

Tallon was the architect of the Blackhawks rebuilding program, playing a key role in the drafting of Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, among others.

Under his watch, the Blackhawks also acquired the likes of Marian Hossa, Kris Versteeg, Patrick Sharp, John Madden and Brian Campbell.

The Blackhawks currently lead the Western Conference finals 1-0 after edging the San Jose Sharks 2-1 Sunday.

The Panthers have failed to advance to the playoffs in an NHL record-tying nine consecutive seasons.

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) – Kobe Bryant dispelled concerns about his health Monday by unloading 21 of his 40 points in the third quarter, as the Los Angeles Lakers thrashed the Phoenix Suns 128-107 in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals at Staples Center.

Pau Gasol added 21 points, while Lamar Odom logged 19 points and a game-best 19 boards for the Lakers, who shot a whopping 58 percent overall.

The Lakers also dominated the battle of the boards 42-34, and outscored Phoenix in the paint, 56-36.

Bryant, who has dealt with a balky ankle and arthritic finger for most of the season, also grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists.

A report in the Los Angeles Times indicated the former league MVP recently had a "significant" amount of fluid drained from his knee.

The reported procedure caused the 12-time All-Star to miss practice after the Lakers swept the Utah Jazz last Monday.

The Suns, coming off a second-round sweep of long-time nemesis San Antonio Spurs, were paced by Amare Stoudemire, who finished with 23 points.

Steve Nash dished out a game-high 13 assists to go along with 13 points, while Jason Richardson had 15 points in the Suns' first setback since a Game 4 loss against Portland in the first round.

Game 2 is slated Wednesday at Staples Center.

Hansen Sinclair – AHN News Reporter

Charlottesville, NC, United States (AHN) – "One Team; One Heart; One Love," read the warm-up T-shirts of the women of the University of Virginia lacrosse team Sunday at Klockner Stadium.

The T-shirts were in memory of slain teammate Yeardley Love.

Fans in the stand waved "No. 1 Yeardley in our hearts" signs as the team defeated Towson University 14-12 in the first round of playoffs.

At the end of the game, Cher's "Believe"–with the lyrics "Do you believe in life after love– was pumped over the loudspeaker across the field as the team held up No. 1 signs.

Love, 22, a senior and member of the women's lacrosse team, was found dead in her off-campus apartment May 3. George Huguely, a former boyfriend and member of the men's lacrosse team, has been charged with first-degree murder in her death.

Sunday's first-round NCAA championship game was the first time the team has played since Love's death.

The Virginia team wore black patches on their jerseys bearing the word "Love." The Towson team, taking part in the tribute, wore orange armbands stitched with the initials Y.L.

Sharon and Lexie Love, Yeardley's mother and sister, attended the game.

Head coach Julie Myers stated the team was exhausted and drained, but had never been so proud to win a single game, according to reports.

After the victory celebration midfield, the team held up No. 1 signs, Yeardley's jersey number.

It was a final tribute to the memory of a lost teammate.

The men's team also won their match over the weekend.

The women's team moves on to the second round to face North Carolina.

Brewers Pitcher Davis On DL With Inflammation On Chest

Milwaukee, WI, United States (AHN) – Milwaukee Brewers lefty Doug Davis was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday vs. Philadelphia, being placed on the 15-day disabled list with pericarditis, an acute inflammation of the lining around the heart.

Davis, 34, experienced pain Saturday morning in his chest and went to the emergency room at Milwaukee’s Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital.

Davis underwent an EKG scan and was seen by Dr. Jim Kleczka, according to MLB.com.

The condition can lead to a serious heart problem if left untreated. It is expected by doctors that Davis will not remain on the DL past the initial 15 days.

Davis was worried that he was suffering a heart attack.

“A lot of people have colds and don’t end up with this," Kleczka said. "It's very intense when you get it. It makes you want to sit up, and you can’t breathe. Fortunately, it is very easily treated.”

Davis has a 1-4 record with a 7.56 ERA this season for the Brewers. He inked a one-year deal for $5.25 million in January.
