Peterson Kicked Off Providence Basketball Team; Violated Team Rule Posted: 19 May 2010 10:55 PM PDT AHN Sports Staff Providence, RI, United States (AHN) – The Providence Friars men’s basketball team expelled sophomore forward Jamie “Greedy” Peterson for violating the program’s rules and regulations, multiple sources reported Wednesday. Friars head coach Keno Davis announced Wednesday the expulsion of Peterson for his involvement in off-court trouble in the final weeks of the this semester. Considered one of the most talented college players in the Big East, Peterson was a consistent double-double performer for the Friars last season. Peterson averaged a team-high 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game in just his sophomore season with the Friars. The 6-foot-6 Peterson also possessed a solid defensive game with 39 steals and 26 blocks last season. Reports indicated Peterson was involved in an “improper activity” with a Boston Amateur 15-under basketball team that was in Providence to participate in a two-day tournament at Rhode Island College. Providence president Rev. Brian Shanley said he never regretted dismissing Peterson from the school’s basketball program. “I don’t want to say anything bad about Greedy [Peterson] except we’re disappointed it didn’t work out,” Shanley told Projo.com Tuesday. “People are going to want to know (what happened). Meanwhile, Davis also expressed his disappointment. “Jamine had a productive season in 2009-10. However, regardless of his athletic accomplishments, it is essential to the integrity of the program that every student-athlete meets the high standards and expectations we have at Providence College,” Davis told the paper. Majestic Tournament: Queen To Visit Wimbledon Posted: 19 May 2010 10:55 PM PDT AHN Sports Staff Wimbledon, United Kingdom (AHN) – Queen Elizabeth will attend the upcoming Wimbledon tennis championship for the first time in 33 years, All England Club Chairman Tim Phillips confirmed Tuesday. Phillips announced Tuesday that the Queen of England will grace the grasscourt Grand Slam event after over three decades of absence. Queen Elizabeth, 84, last attended the Wimbledon Open in 1977, when Briton Virginia Wade captured the women’s singles title on home grass. Reports indicated the Queen is scheduled to visit the All England Tennis Club on June 24. “We are delighted and honored that the Queen has indicated that she will be attending the championships this year and we very much look forward to welcoming Her Majesty back,” Phillips told Bloomberg Tuesday. World No.4 Andy Murray will once again carry Britain’s hope, as he looks to become the first Briton to win a Grand Slam title since Fred Pery in 1936. Murray also considers himself a Scot, having been born there. Murray came close of ending the drought last year, but lost to American Andy Roddick 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the semifinal. The Wimbledon Open, arguably the most prestigious Grand Slam tournament of the year, will run from June 21 to July 4 at All England Club in southwest London. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |

Nets New Owner Says Vandeweghe Out As Team`s GM Posted: 19 May 2010 10:55 PM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Newark, NJ, United States (AHN) – New Jersey Nets new owner Mikhail Prokhorov, who is only just one week on his tenure, reportedly outlined his plans for the offseason and beyond, including the dismissal of general manager KIki Vandeweghe. When the issue of management was raised in a separate 90-minute brunch with reporters Wednesday, the 45-year-old Russian billionaire indicated that he will not ask Vandeweghe, who also coached the Nets this season, to return when his contract expires this summer. Prokhorov told reporters, “With Kiki, he’s a very talented guy, he did his job in a very tough season and his agreement expires in summer and I wish him well.” Vandeweghe, who had coached the Nets for the remainder of the 2009-10 season after the dismissal of Lawerence Frank following a woeful 0-16 start, had been the general manager of the team since May of 2008. In the two seasons he has held the post, the Nets posted a 46-118 mark, including an NBA-worst 12-70 last season. Meanwhile, Prokhorov also indicated that he is retaining the Nets longtime team president Rod Thorn and that he is looking to sign Thorn to an extension. Thorn is expected to lead the search for a new head coach, who according to Prokhorov must have prior NBA experience. This latest revelation rules out previously reported favorite Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski as well as other European coach. Also Wednesday, the self-made Russian billionaire also indicated that he was contemplating a name change with the Nets moving to Brooklyn in 2012. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Red Sox Place Pitcher Beckett On DL; Lower Back Strain Posted: 19 May 2010 10:55 PM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – The Boston Red Sox placed starting pitcher Josh Beckett on the 15-day DL due to a lower back strain before Wednesday’s game. It was the same back problem that forced the ace right-hander to leave Tuesday’s start against the Yankees after two outs in the fifth inning. The Yankees played Tuesday’s contest under protest after Beckett was replaced by reliever Manny Delcarmen. The Red Sox went on to win that game, 7-6. Beckett, a two-time AL All-Star and two-time World Series champion, compiled a 1-1 record with a 7.29 ERA in eight games this season. He posted his only win back on April 10 at Kansas City. Earlier this season, the 30-year-old pitcher was signed to a four-year, $68 million contract extension. Meanwhile, Boston is expected to tap knuckleball specialist Tim Wakefield to take Beckett’s spot in the rotation, while Joe Nelson has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill in the roster spot. Wakefield will start in Philadelphia Sunday. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |

Dolphins Wideout Marshall Sidelined After Hip Surgery Posted: 19 May 2010 10:55 PM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Miami, FL, United States (AHN) – Wide receiver Brandon Marshall, the Miami Dolphins’ prized offseason addition, will be sidelined until at least the start of training camp after reportedly undergoing surgery on his hip. According to reports, Marshall, 26, who sat out Wednesday’s practice, underwent a procedure to repair an injury in his right hip. It was in contrast to reports earlier Wednesday that the two-time Pro Bowl selection had a procedure to clean up the last surgery to his left hip. Dolphins coach Tony Sparano, who reportedly indicated that he was not disappointed by the procedure, which he referred to as “routine,” noted that Marshall was “throwing and catching” on the same day the surgery was performed. “It was something that came up,” Sparano told MiamiHerald.com. “We need to get it cleaned, and we did.” Marshall, the third-round pick by the Denver Broncos in the 2006 NFL Draft, also had surgery March of 2009 while still a Bronco, addressing a hip injury that bothered him through much of the 2008 campaign. Despite said injury, Marshall recorded his third consecutive 100-reception season in 2009, gaining 1,120 yards. He also posted a career-best 10 TD receptions and set an NFL record for receptions in a game with 21, as part of a 28-16 road loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Marshall, in over four seasons with the Broncos, compiled 327 receptions for 4,019 yards and 25 TD in 61 games. He was acquired from the Broncos early last month in exchange for a 2010 second-round pick and a second-round selection in 2011. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
Bradley Rejoins Mariners After Counseling, In Lineup For Wednesday`s Game Posted: 19 May 2010 10:55 PM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Seattle, WA, United States (AHN) – After two weeks of counseling for personal issues and anger, temperamental outfielder Milton Bradley has rejoined the Seattle Mariners. The outfielder was back in the lineup prior to Wednesday’s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays. The volatile Bradley, playing with his eighth team in 10 seasons, came to manager Don Wakamatsu and general manager Jack Zduriencik asking them to help him the day after he was removed from a May 5 contest following an in-game exchange with Wakamatsu. The 32-year-old journeyman, who was acquired from the Chicago Cubs last December in exchange for pitcher Carlos Silva, erupted after being removed from that game following a strikeout in the sixth inning. Bradley was not allowed to be with the M’s for any workouts since being placed on the restricted list on May 6. Bradley took early batting practice and will be playing left field Wednesday. At the Mariners’ clubhouse at Safeco Field prior to Wednesday’s game, Bradley indicated to reporters his gratefulness for the support the organization has given him and also the encouragement from Seattle fans. Bradley reportedly indicated that he does not have “all the answers,” and added “I am not saying I’m cured or whatever you call it,” referring to the process he had gone through. Bradley, who had a batting average of .214, two home runs and 12 RBI before being placed on the restricted list, will continue to go through the treatment process. The struggling Mariners are entering Wednesday’s night game with a 14-25 mark. In the American League, Seattle is at the bottom in every possible offensive category. Balanced Attack Lifts Lakers Past Suns; Take 2-0 Western Finals Edge Posted: 19 May 2010 05:25 PM PDT Dennis Freeman – AHN Sports Correspondent Los Angeles, California, United States (AHN) – The Phoenix Suns played a lot more competitively in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against the defending champs Los Angeles Lakers than they did in the first game of the best-of-seven series. Too bad the Lakers played better. Using a balanced scoring attack the Lakers withstood a more feisty Suns’ team than in Game 1 to secure a 124-112 win Wednesday night at STAPLES Center and take a commanding 2-0 series lead. Ron Artest found his offensive game, scoring 18 points. Paul Gasol had his typical quiet dominating performance, dropping in a game-high 29 points and pulling down nine rebounds. The Lakers’ bench came alive and provided a spark for the team. There was even a strong Andrew Bynum sighting as the Lakers’ center found a way to produce a solid outing with 13 points and seven rebounds. “Well, I think we found a number of ways to score,” said Lakers’ coach Phil Jackson. “Obviously this team, the Suns, have played really good defense in the two series before ours. We anticipated, we thought about moving the ball about finding the open man in situations. Kobe (Bryant) played well. Tonight, he didn’t shoot the ball as well as he has. But other guys stepped up and shot the ball really well.” Instead of dropping in another 40-point performance as he did in the previous game, Bryant played quarterback in Game 2, dishing out 13 assists to go along with his 21 points on the night. Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry said Bryant forces teams to pick and choose their poison. “What happens if you try to start to double team Kobe and try to get the ball out of his hands, you know, he’s a very unselfish guy,” said Gentry. “I mean, he really trusts his teammates now. And when you do that he finds open guys, and he gets you in rotation. When you get in rotation, they’ve got players that are very capable of making their shots. So it’s pick your poison with these guys.” Playing out like a repeat of the first game, the Lakers’ height advantage was once again the undoing for Phoenix. Fortunately for Phoenix, Lamar Odom wasn’t lucky enough to pull off another stellar 19 points, 19 rebound effort as he did in Game 1. But Odom still managed to have another solid showing, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds and offsetting the 23-point, six rebound effort of Suns’ forward Amare Stoudemire, who suggested that the Lakers veteran was “lucky” with his performance in Game 1. Odom refused to get into a war of words with Stoudemire. “It’s not really about me versus Amare,” said Odom. “I’m saying this is about the Lakers versus the Suns. That’s how I look at it.” Artest gave the Lakers a scoring boost in the first quarter, dropping in 10 points as Los Angeles raced out to a 36-24 lead. By halftime, Phoenix had cut the Lakers’s lead to nine. A 34-point scoring outburst by the Suns in the third quarter produced a 90-90 tie as both teams headed into the final quarter. The Lakers, thanks to a 14-point scoring outburst by Gasol, flipped the switch on the Suns by scoring 34 points in the final period to ice the game. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
