U.S. Falls To Germany Before Record Crowd 2010 World Championships Opener Posted: 08 May 2010 11:42 AM PDT AHN Sports Staff Gerlsenkirchen, Germany (AHN) – The United States men's ice hockey team opened up the 2010 IHHF World Championship Friday with a 2-1 lost to Germany in front of a record crowd. Germany earned its first win of the World Championship after Felix Schutz netted a goal 21 seconds into the overtime period. Yahoo Sports reported 77,803 attended the first scheduled match of the annual ice hockey tournament at Velitin Arena in Gerlsenkirchen, Germany. Sports analysts believe Friday's record crowd indicates the growing enthusiasm of Europeans to hockey games. The crowd in the USA-Germany match broke the 9-year record set by Michigan and Michigan State in a college hockey match in 2001. Germany Michael Wolf scored the first goal of the match after he converted an assist from Marcel Mueller in the opening period. USA's Ducks Ryan Carter leveled up the score with 8:23 left in the third period, but Schutz – a Buffalo Sabres draft pick – fired the winning goal in the extension period. Germany's goaltender Dennis Endras proved to be the difference-maker in the match, as he saved 31 of USA's 32 shot attempts. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Blackhawks Dismantle Canucks; One Win From Western Finals Posted: 08 May 2010 08:56 AM PDT AHN Sports Staff Vancouver, BC, United States (AHN) – The Chicago Blackhawks rolled up a 7-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in game 4 of their Western Conference semifinal matchup. Center Jonathan Toews powered the Blackhawks to a 3-1 series advantage, as he completed a hat trick with two assists at GM Place in Vancouver Friday. The Blackhawks also converted four power-play goals, capitalizing on the Canucks' penalties throughout the match. Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo failed to hold off the Hawks' offensive attack after allowing them to score in the first minute of the first and second periods. Defenseman Brent Seabrook put ahead the Hawks 1-0 after he converted a nifty assists by Toews and wingman Dustin Byfuglien just 18 seconds in. After a highly competitive first period, Toews converted an unassisted power play goal to take a 3-2 advantage just 27 seconds into the second period. Luongo, who collected 27 saves in a rough outing, admitted the Canucks once again lost their composure by committing too many penalties. Defenseman Shane O'Brien and Daniel Sedin had a majority of the Canucks' penalties, but it was O'Brien's two quick cross-checking penalties on Byfuglien in the first period that changed the game’s complexion. While O'Brien sitting with his second minor, Toews scored his team's first power-play goal midway through the opening period. The Blackhawks can close out the series in game 5 Sunday at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved |
Eng vs SA ICC T20 Live Score: A Clash for Superiority Posted: 08 May 2010 08:53 AM PDT
England and South Africa meet at Bridgetown in barbados with the sole intention of clearing their way to the semis of the ICC T20 world cup, after their first match win the Super Eights. England defeated Pakistan, while South Africa sailed past a strong New Zealand in their previous games. Both England and South Africa are currently the group toppers despite a not so impressive start at the tournament. England is riding high on the confidence gained after a warm up win against South Africa, while the latter seems to have attained a certain advantage after the super eight win. However England needs to correct its batting inconsistency, as South Africa is ready for attack with bowlers like Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel. Albie Morkel and Jacques Kallis would lead their batting lineup, while Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan are England's trump cards. The teams' face off last time had concluded in a draw of the series. |

Hamlin Edges Busch For Darlington Nationwide Win Posted: 08 May 2010 04:35 AM PDT Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter Darlington, SC, United States (AHN) – Kyle Busch has been the man with the hot hand in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, but Friday night it was Denny Hamlin who raced to his third consecutive Nationwide victory at Darlington Raceway. Hamlin, who started from the pole and led most of the race, pulled away from Busch with five laps left to win the Royal Purple 200. “I think we were a little bit better than the 20 (Hamlin) was, but it showed how pivotal clean air is out here,” Busch said. Busch settled for runner-up honors and was followed by Jamie McMurray, who had showed marked improvement in the No. 88 of JR Motorsports since taking the ride over from Kelly Bires. Kasey Kahne was fourth and followed across the finish line by Jason Leffler, Carl Edwards and series points leader Brad Keselowski. Kevin Harvick, Brian Vickers and Paul Menard rounded out the top 10. "This is a place that I've run at and never got a top 10, so I'm pretty pumped right now. The guys that we're racing in points, the 18 and 33, were in front and behind us, so the points didn't change much tonight. I'll just chalk it up to a decent night,” said Keselowski. “We probably could have gotten a third-place finish out of the race if we didn't pit and take four tires. We made the move that we thought was our best shot to win the race and in the end, all those cautions just killed us." Hamlin hadn’t competed at Darlington in the Nationwide race over the last two seasons, but won there in both 2006 and 2007. Friday’s night’s triumph was the 10th career Nationwide win for Hamlin and the first for crew chief Kevin Kidd. Hamlin led 111 of 147 laps in a race that saw nine caution periods — one short of Darlington’s Nationwide record. Copyright © 2003 – 2010 AHN – All rights reserved. |
Pak vs NZ ICC T20 Live Score: Pakistan and New Zealand try to Avoid Elimination Posted: 08 May 2010 02:23 AM PDT
New Zealand and Pakistan will have to sweat it out heavily if they have to sustain the chances of survival in the ICC T20 World Cup in West Indies. Both have lost their respective first matches in the super eight, and this clash would be a do or die game for the teams. New Zealand and Pakistan were defeated by South Africa and England respectively in their previous matches. New Zealand, after a convincing show in the first round, went down for 13 runs against the Proteas. The defending champions on the other hand holds just two win against Bangladesh to their credit, and were thrashed by England by a margin of six wickets. Both the teams are trying hard to clear the defects and sail to the next level of the tournament. Pakistan is considered to possess the capacity for surprises, if the fielding errors are fixed and batting lineup is up to the mark. Daniel Vettori is hoping to leave behind the defeat and focus on the bowling problem that facilitated their loss against South Africa. The New Zealand vs Pakistan is expected to deliver some memorable performances from players like Brendon McCullum and Umar Akmal. |
