Cardinals Reds Fight: Molina And Brandon Phillips Deserve Nemesis

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 01:01 PM PDT

cardinals reds fightToday an embarrassing Cardinals reds fight has shown at least one thing that these players really do not have manners. As these players forgot everything on the ground and went all guns blazing at each other for taking their furry out at each other for no reason.

It all started during the first innings when second baseman of reds Brandon Phillips started blasting the Cardinals all over the park.

When reds baseman Brandon Phillips was trying to make his ground by dragging his bat on the ground Molina got agitated at this. Both Molina and Brandon Phillips locked hones with each other right on the spot and that too on the ground shamelessly. Both of them exchanged some heating arguments.

In this brawl Brandon Phillips took off his helmet and in reply Molina took off his mask. At this bench strength of both the teams got on the ground.

Third baseman of reds Scott Rolen took the toll of St. Louis's pitcher Chris Carpenter. In this cat fight and cat call carpenter ended up pinned against the backstop screen. So far Scott Rolen is concerned so he was pulled away.

Talking about cueto so he too ended up at the same spot. He kept on kicking the players continuously.  This shameless display of brazen character of these players lasted at least for seven embarrassing minutes.

In this unforgettable game Cardinals registered a comfortable win over the reds by 8-4. But this brazen stigma that has demolished the reputation of the game publicly will not be cinch to remove. Brandon Phillips of reds and Molina of Cardinals are the main culprits of it and they deserve the nemesis.

The Dallas cowboys began the NFL 2010 preseason with an amazing 16-7 match win over the opposite team.

It was the Cincinnati Bengals who lost the prestigious game when the enthusiastic cowboys easily covered the +3 point spreads at the game.

After the sensational game the cowboys will be next up against the Oakland Raiders on the match scheduled on the Thursday night pick up match for the NFL preseason at 9 by the EST.

Although the favorites managed to pull off the NFL predictions, there were many injuries in the team for the Dallas.

There was a possible ACL torn suffered by John Phillips and an ankle injury for Markus Bennet. Besides this there was another ankle injury suffered by Kevin Brock, the backup.

It looks that the team is doing everything to win respectably and therefore these injuries are not so surprising.

The next game against the Oakland Raiders is surely going to be very exciting and much awaited for all the cowboys' fans.

Astros Spoil Braves` Rookie Debut, Heyward`s Birthday

Houston, TX, United States (AHN) – Atlanta slugger Jason Heyward celebrated his 21st birthday with a solo home run, and rookie Mike Minor pitched six innings, but a six-run seventh inning proved to be the difference, as the Houston Astros rallied to beat the Braves 10-4 Monday.

Chris Johnson, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, and Carlos Lee, who had a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in two runs powered the Astros, who snapped a four-game losing streak

The National League East leading Braves, who had not allowed 10 runs in a game since June 27, committed a pair of costly errors in the seventh inning that blew the game open.

The miscues keyed the win for the Astros, who have won six straight at Minute Maid Park.

Houston (48-63) sent 10 batters to the plate in the pivotal seventh and took advantage of an ineffective bullpen to pull away.

The Astros scored six runs on five hits. They took advantage of two errors, a pair of walks and a wild pitch from relievers Kyle Farnsworth and Peter Moylan.

With the game tied at 4-4, the Astros displayed a knack for hits that fell in front of Braves outfielders.

Pinch hitter Jeff Blum hit a soft fly that landed in front of Heyward in right field to lead off the seventh.

Pinch runner Jason Bourgeois advanced to second when Farnsworth’s pickoff attempt eluded Troy Glaus at first base.

Bourgeois moved to third on a groundout and scored the go-ahead run when Jeff Keppinger, who went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, singled to left field.

Farnsworth, who allowed four runs in a 1-3 of an inning, uncorked a wild pitch and loaded the bases with an intentional walk before giving way to Moylan,

On his first pitch, Lee delivered a hit that bounced in front of a diving Heyward for an RBI single and a 6-3 lead.

The Astros capped the scoring when Johnson slapped a single, with the bases loaded, to shallow left field.

Atlanta’s Eric Hinske came up throwing in an attempt to get Hunter Pence out at the plate, but the threw was offline.

Braves catcher Brian McCann then attempted to throw out Lee at third base, but the throw sailed over Chipper Jones and into the left field corner, allowing Johnson to come all the way round to score.

It was a strange play that typified the night for the Braves, who took an early 2-0 lead for the rookie left-hander on Heyward’s home run and an RBI double by Alex Gonzalez.

Minor, who scattered five hits and allowed three earned runs and struck out five, had a chance to help his own cause with a sharply hit liner to right field that would have scored Gonzalez.

Pence fired the ball to first base to get the rookie out at first to end the inning.

San Francisco, CA, United States (AHN) – Carlos Zambrano made his return to the Cubs bullpen after coming off the restricted list and struggled with his control, as the Giants handed Chicago its sixth straight loss with a 4-3 victory in 11 innings.

The unpredictable Cubs pitcher, who had a shutout going for the first four innings, lasted five innings and allowed two runs on four hits and walked seven to get the no-decision, as the two bullpens decided the contest.

After the two clubs traded runs in the sixth inning, the bullpens were on lockdown mode for the next five innings until the Giants broke through in the bottom of the 11th inning off Cubs reliever Marcos Mateo (0-1).

Edgar Renteria, 2-for-6 with two runs scored, singled in the final frame and advanced to third on a single by Aubry Huff.

Renteria scored the game-winning run when Pat Burrell hit a sacrifice fly to halt a two-game losing streak and continue the Cubs’ misery.

The Giants bullpen of Guillermo Mota, Sergio Romo, Brian WIlson, Ramon Ramirez, Javier Lopez and Chris Ray combined to allow one hit in the final 5 1-3 innings to secure the victory.

Paul retired the lone batter he faced to pick up the victory.

Chicago welcomed back Zambrano, who had not pitched since his tirade in the dugout after being pulled in the first inning vs. the Chicago White Sox on June 25 by manager Lou Piniella.

The Cubs were hoping for a lift from Zambrano and got off to a quick start with a 2-0 lead.

The embattled Zambrano, who had a two-run cushion, opened the fifth inning with a leadoff walk to Andres Torres and gave up a single to Edgar Renteria.

With one out, Buster Posey drilled a Zambrano sinker, that did not sink enough, for an RBI ground-rule double.

Zambrano compounded his problems by throwing a wild pitch that scored Renteria and tied the game.

Revis` Agents Give Jets New Proposal; Team Owner Not Optimistic

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 06:11 AM PDT

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Cortland, N.Y., United States (AHN) – The NFL’s top-ranked defense from a year ago may be without its best player in 2010 with Jets owner Woody Johnson saying the club and holdout standout cornerback Darrelle Revis may not be able to strike a deal.

On Monday, Johnson conceded the chances of signing the All-Pro cornerback to a new contract before the start of the regular season on Sept. 13 are slim, according to various reports.

Johnson also said as much on an interview with ESPN, though some believe the owner was posturing as part of the negotiations.

Revis’ representatives reportedly met with GM Mike Tannenbaum and director of football administration Ari Nissim last Friday at a diner in rural Roscoe, N.Y.

A new proposal, that included some “technical changes,” was handed to Tannenbaum.

Johnson, however, indicated that the latest proposal contained “nothing new and different”, which was disputed by Neil Schwartz, one of Revis’ representatives.

According to Schwartz, the proposal addressed “all their concerns and issues.”

The 25-year-old Revis, regarded for his ability to play one-on-one with opposing receivers, wants to be the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

After being selected by the Jets in the 2007 NFL Draft, Revis has emerged as one of the best cornerbacks in the league.

The two-time Pro Bowler is expected to earn $1 million this season under his current contract.

Revis’ holdout has reached nine days, and he has accumulated more than $148,000 in fines.

Revis risks losing a year of service toward his eligibility for free agency if he does not report to the Jets Tuesday.

O`Neil Resigns From Villa: U.S. Coach Bradley Possible Successor

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 06:11 AM PDT

Andrew Lawn – AHN Sports Correspondent

Birmingham, United Kingdom (AHN) – Martin O’Neil shocked the soccer world by resigning from Premier League club Aston Villa just five days before the start of the new Premier League season.

O’Neil has been at Villa four years, in which time he has established the club as a top-six Premier League side.

It is believed O’Neil walked out after talks with the club’s U.S. owner Randy Lerner revealed that O’Neil would not be allowed to re-invest any incoming transfer money into the playing squad.

O’Neil has been in this position before, with similar results, when the Irishman left Norwich City in 1995 after being denied permission to sign striker Dean Windass.

U.S. National Team coach Bob Bradley is the bookmakers favorite to replace the Irishman at Villa Park, although Kevin MacDonald will take charge of the club’s opening Premier League match at home to West Ham United on Saturday.

The U.S. National Team face Brazil in a friendly on Wednesday, but it is likely most of the focus will be on Bradley rather than his team.

Jeff Van Gundy Says Heat Can Post Best-Ever Mark

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 06:11 AM PDT

AHN Sports Staff

Miami, FL, United States (AHN) – ESPN and ABC color analyst Jeff Van Gundy ramped up the hype on South Beach Monday, saying the Miami Heat have a legitimate chance of posting the NBA’s best-ever regular-season record.

Van Gundy said the Heat’s free agent success would continue throughout the regular season, believing the power nucleus of Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and LeBron James is too good for other teams to handle.

Speaking on “The Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000 last Monday, Van Gundy confidently stated the Heat have a shot to break the 72-10 regular season record set by Michael Jordan and the Bulls in the 1995-1996 season.

The former New York Knicks and Houston Rockets coach also added the Heat could also set the longest winning streak in the NBA, surpassing the 33-game run set by the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1971-1972 season.

Van Gundy’s comments about the Heat’s potential dominance sound odd, considering his volatile history with the Heat during his tenure with the Knicks.

Van Gundy, 48, also viewed the Kobe Bryant-led Lakers and the Shaquille O’Neal-infused Boston Celtics as the next best teams, with the Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks taking a step back from the contenders’ circle.

“I think you’ve got Miami, and you have Boston just a notch below them,” he said. “Orlando would have to be right below them, then I think Atlanta’s a very good team. Van Gundy told ESPN Monday

The Chicago Bulls, who added Carlos Boozer in the offseason, were not on Van Gundy’s elite list. He thinks the Bulls will wind up somewhere from fifth to eighth in the Eastern Conference come April.

Egyptian-Algerian Soccer War Goes Into Overtime

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 06:11 AM PDT

The Media Line Staff

Cairo, Egypt David E. Miller – Algeria has decided not to invite Egyptians to an international book fair this October, highlighting ongoing tensions between the two countries since Algeria beat Egypt in a World Cup qualifying match last year.

Egyptian daily Al-Yom A-Sabi’ reported last week that with the notable exception of Egypt, all Arab countries have received invitations to participate in Algeria’s International Book Fair.

The news follows an Algerian boycott earlier this year of a book fair in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

“This is a natural response to the curses, humiliation and dishonor Algerians were subjected to by the Egyptians on their satellite channels,” Isma’il Ameziane, the book fair organizer told the Algerian daily A-Shourouq. “To date the Algerian street has not recovered from the wounds the Egyptians inflicted upon us; they simply struck us at our holy of holies, at our symbols.”

Algeria and Egypt have been at odds since November of last year, when Algeria beat Egypt 1-0 in a soccer match in Sudan during the qualifying rounds for the World Cup. Reports of Algerian attacks against Egyptian fans following the match sparked anti-Algerian riots in Cairo. The Algerians responded by burning Egyptian businesses in Algeria.

The violent events caused Egypt to recall its ambassador from Algiers, amid bellicose statements by President Hosni Mubarak who said Egypt “would not tolerate those who hurt the dignity of its sons.”

Muhammad Baydoun, secretary general of the Arab publishers syndicate, tried to downplay the significance of the Algerian book fair boycott.

“There is no boycott, invitations were simply not sent,” he told The Media Line. “We are looking into the issue.”

“We are professionals and not politicians, and this not a professional problem,” Baydoun said. “Even if we did intervene — it would have no results. We have no political authority.”

Ameziane, the book fair organizer, said he was particularly saddened that the Egyptian attacks came from politicians and intellectuals, who were the first to call for a cultural boycott of his country.

Ameziane added that the organizers of the book fair could not bear the responsibility or security costs of protecting Egyptians and their goods if “unruly” youths were to use violence against the Egyptian guests.

Egyptian publishers have complained of ongoing mistreatment by their Algerian counterparts, beginning before the recent outburst of animosity following the World Cup qualifying games.

Edward Bell, an expert on Algeria working for the Economist Intelligence Unit, said the tension between Algeria and Egypt reflected regional competition between the two countries.

“This is the first time I see an institutional representation of the tension,” he told The Media Line. “Before, it was just mobs attacking things.”

Rasheed Wallace`s Agent Confirms Player`s Retirement From NBA

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 06:11 AM PDT

Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter

Boston, MA, United States (AHN) – Rasheed Wallace’s agent Bill Strickland ended weeks of speculation when he confirmed Monday his client is retiring from the NBA after a turbulent 15-year career.

The Boston Celtics proceeded in the offseason as if Wallace was retiring, signing big men Jermaine O’Neal and Shaquille O’Neal.

The latter O’Neal tried to convince Wallace to stick around for another season, but to no avail.

Wallace, 35, said he planned to retire following the Celtics Game 7 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, but months of silence led to speculation on his next career move.

Strickland ended that speculation Monday as Wallace ended what has been a career filled with peaks and valleys.

The Philadelphia native won a championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004, but could have been considered among the all-time great forwards had he curbed his attitude.

Wallace does rank among the top in several categories, finishing his career with 313 technical fouls, 25 ejections, and 37 disqualifications.

The four-time All Star finished with 15,860 points for five teams, averaging 13.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game on a 44.4 percent field goal percentage.

Pistons Agree To Terms With Veteran Guard McGrady

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 06:11 AM PDT

John Nestor – AHN Sports Correspondent

Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) – Tracy McGrady is heading to the Motor City to see if he has anything left in the tank.

McGrady and the Pistons agreed to terms one a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum. McGrady had also garnered interest from the Chicago Bulls, but negotiations stalled.

Once one of the elite scorers in the league, the 31-year-old McGrady averaged a career-low 8.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game in 30 games for the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks.

After five-plus seasons in Houston, McGrady was traded in a three-way deal with the Sacramento Kings to the Knicks and averaged 9.4 points in 24 games in New York.

After a workout in front of Pistons president Joe Dumars, head coach John Kuester and the Detroit training staff last week, negotiations between the two sides became more serious.

McGrady can play both shooting guard and small forward offers the Pistons depth at both positions behind Rip Hamilton and Ben Gordon in the backcourt and Tayshaun Prince in the frontcourt.

The seven-time All Star and two-time scoring champ may not be the explosive finisher he once was, but for the amount of money the Pistons will pay him, around $1.3 million, it appears to be a chance the team is willing to take.

The main concern is McGrady’s right knee, which he had microfracture surgery on during the 2008-09 season.

The Pistons are hoping that McGrady, the ninth pick in the 1997 draft, can stay healthy and that he will be motivated to show he is still a solid pro.
