Roger Clemens will head towards the abyss of anonymity if he doesn’t confess

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 04:01 AM PDT

Roger ClemensThe spirits of Sports says that one should face all the challenges and strive hard to win them but only using fair means. But Gods Knows when will our sportsmen understand and start following this spirit religiously.

For many years many budding careers have been destroyed from the disaster called steroids which may give them that initial kick and stamina to perform exceptionally well but destroys their career forever and ever.

The same happened with Roger Clemens who is on the verge of extinction and that to a shameful one as he has been lying about his steroids intake to the congress.

The situation is so bad that there is only the confession of the truth which can save him from the abyss of anonymity and negligence. After a trial in a federal court it's the only thing to save him and even his lawyers are helpless.

Lying to the jury about his steroids intake place him in the same category as Barry Bonds, one of the greatest major league baseball players who was also convicted for lying to the jury too that he never knowingly took the steroids and led a controversial life in the center of steroids scandals.

If Clemens is proved guilty then it will be nothing less than of bonds stature and it will finish his career forever.

Arjun Atwal: First Indian Ever to Win On PGA Tour, Makes History

Arjun Atwal, bounced back impressively after losing his card 4 weeks before. He achieved a history making victory by winning in the initial weeks of the Wyndham Championships, a victory which many wouldn't have considered him capable of.

The week was quite eventful for the Indian as he wormed his way into the tournament by qualifying on Monday through the Qualifiers. He scripted history by going on from the qualifiers which are for players who are not directly entered into the tournament, to win a remarkable victory. It was Fred Wadsworth who last achieved such a feat in Southern Open tournament way back in 1986.

Atwal came back with a burgeoning purse containing $918,000, the highest he has received in his career after demolishing his opponents and staking a claim to the winners' purse with an impressive 20 under 260. This tournament has been a lot of firsts for Indian players. Jeev Milkha Singh, the Chandigarh golfer also made his presence felt in the top 20, finishing with a 14 under 266 to hold on to the 18th spot. Thus, for the first time, 2 notable Indian golfers have simultaneously featured in the top 20 in a PGA tour.

Atwal claims he was pretty nervous during the dying moments despite having a clear and substantial 3 shot lead. It was a dream come true for the 37 year old Atwal who once occupied the elite spot or 1st ranking in golf in the year 2003. He has since gone on to create a niche for himself by claiming Asian, European and nationwide tours.

‘I have no words to describe it,’ sighed a visibly tired and elated Atwal who has stormed back in style after a shattering Shoulder injury incurred the previous year. He says as an afterthought, ‘I really grinded it today. I was so nervous over that putt.’

This amazing victory has ensured Atwal's entry into numerous invitational events the next year as he has qualified to be on the PGA tour for the current as well as coming 2 years with his win in Sedgefield Country Club. Arjun Atwal has been an enigmatic golfer who was the first Indian golfer to qualify to be on the PGA tour in the year 2004 and also the 1st to win in the year 2002, an European tour event.

There would be a slight disappointment as he would not be qualified to participate in the PGA tour play-offs for the FedexCup which kicks off next week. He does get an exemption on the Tour for the coming 2 years which is highly optimistic. Atwal was visibly pleased because he made just a single pardonable bogey on Sunday and 2 more over the final rounds on Monday. Atwal put up a steady all-round show by also booking his spot in the top 3 in other areas of driving and putting as well this week.

‘My mind is a little scrambled right now. The only thing I remember about the week is that after the Monday qualifiers,

I told my caddie that we have got nothing to lose. I don’t have a card anymore,’ he reminisces.

Atwal attributes his victory to his relentless reminder that he had nothing to lose.

Greensboro, NC, United States (AHN) – Arjun Atwal moved a day closer to his childhood dream Saturday at the Wyndham Championship.

Atwal played a flawless final nine at the Sedgefield Country Club, shot a four-under-par 31 to post a 65 and a 17-under-par total for 54 holes.

He owns a three-shot lead going into Sunday’s final round.

If Atwal can continue his solid play, he would become the first Monday qualifier to win a tour event in 24 years.

“I played solid. I didn’t put myself out of position all day,” Atwal said. “There were good scoring conditions. My childhood dream is to win on the PGA Tour.”

Atwal has won 10 tournaments worldwide. His 193 total gave him a three-shot lead over the trio of Scott McCarron, Scott Piercy and Lucas Glover. McCarron shot the day’s low round, a seven-under-par 63 to head that group at 196.

Brandt Snedeker found trouble on the back nine.

Playing with Atwal in the final pairing, Snedeker hit his second shot into the water off the par-5, 15th hole and ended up with a bogey. He then got careless with a short putt at the par-3 16th and missed from just two feet for par.

His 69 tied him at 197 with Will McKenzie, Garrett Willis, David Toms, Justin Leonard and John Rollins.

A win would be huge for Atwal. He has no status on the PGA Tour and it would give him a two-year exemption and entry into the elite tournaments, including the Masters.

“I want to keep doing the same stuff I’m doing,” said Atwal, who holds his first-ever 54-hole lead. “I want to have fun. I got in as a qualifier, no one expected me to be in this position.”

San Diego, CA, United States (AHN) – The Seattle Seahawks have been granted permission to talk to San Diego Chargers holdout Vincent Jackson about a possible deal that would bring the wideout to Seattle.

He could reportedly be had in exchange for a second-round draft pick.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound receiver will be forced to serve a three-game suspension at the start of the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Jackson has twiced been arrested for DUI.

Jackson and fellow hold out Marcus McNeill were put on the roster exempt list by the Chargers and threatened with three-game suspensions.

Lehman Finds Iron Game, Leads Jeld-Wen Tradition

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 07:50 PM PDT

Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter

Sunriver, OR, United States (AHN) – After two rounds of the Jeld-Wen Tradition, Tom Lehman’s iron shots were out of sorts. He lamented that his irons felt like “spatulas.”

He turned the spatulas into precision instruments Saturday and shot a 3-under-par 69 that was good for a two-shot lead at the Jeld-Wen Tradition championship.

Lehman’s 11-under-par 205 at the Crosswater Golf Club put him two shots in front of Bernhard Langer, Fred Funk and J.L. Lewis going into the final 18.

Langer and Lehman have won all three senior majors between them. Lehman won the Senior PGA, and Langer has been dominating as of late with victories at the Senior British and U.S. Senior Open.

Lehman described his first two rounds as “frustrating” but he found the center of his irons during the third round. Langer had taken the lead and was 10-under through 12 holes but fell back when he missed a four-foot putt for par at the 13th hole.

Lehman took the lead with a spectacular approach shot at the par-4 14th that nearly went in the hole for an eagle. He finished with a one-foot putt for birdie.

That got him to 10-under then Lehman added another at the diffiicult par-3 17th, the hole where he made birdie Friday when he holed a bunker shot.

Five players are only three shots back going into the final round.

Second round leader D.A. Weibring is in that group after finishing with a 2-over-par 74. He was at 208, 8-under-par along with John Cook, Chien Soon Lu, Bob Gilder and Bob Tway.

Cook lost this championship last year in a playoff with Mike Reid.

Soon Lu had the day’s best round, a 7-under-par 65 and had a bogey on par-4 eighth. He had a triple-bogey on the same hole in the second round.

Defending Champ Del Potro Out Of U.S. Open; Wrist Injury

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 07:50 PM PDT

Todd Callahan – AHN Sports Reporter

Flushing Meadows, NY, United States (AHN) – There will be a new men’s champion at the U.S. Open, as defending titlist Juan Martin del Potro officially announced he has withdrawn from the national tournament, slated to begin Aug. 30.

The 21-year-old, hampered all year by a wrist injury he had surgery for in May, announced his withdrawal on the United Tennis Association Web site.

“I feel extremely sad to announce that I will not to be able to defend my U.S. Open title,” del Potro said. “Winning in New York last year has been my major accomplishment in tennis and my best memory so far. I am so sorry for my fans, my sponsors and all the people that care about me.”

“I look forward to returning to New York in 2011 and wish all the best to the tournament organizers and my fellow players.”

Since becoming the first player to defeat Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to win a grand slam title in September in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., del Potro has endured a forgettable season.

After opening up with a win in the opening round of the AAMI Kooyong Classic in Melbourne, Australia, a tune up to the Australian Open, del Potro suffered a wrist injury and had to withdraw.

The 6-foot-6 Argentine, who had risen to No. 4 in the ATP rankings, attempted to play in the first grand slam of the season and reached the round-of-16 before falling to eventual semifinalist Marin Čilić, 7-5, 4-6, 5-7, 7-5, 3-6.

Del Potro took some time off, but the injury flared up again in the spring, forcing del Potro to have surgery in May and originally say he would not defend his U.S. Open title.

However, del Potro returned to the practice court on Aug. 2 and was eyeing a comeback at the U.S. Open. But he elected to postpone his return to at least the middle of September.

“I have only started practicing in the last two weeks and unfortunately I cannot compete at the top level yet,” del Potro said.

The Argentine is not the only top player to withdraw from the U.S. Open.

Top American Serena Williams, who cut her foot on glass in a restaurant in Miami last month, has withdrawn, along with former No. 1 player Justine Henin.

FC Dallas, Chivas USA Even At The Half

John Tranchina – AHN Sports Correspondent

Frisco, TX, United States (AHN) – With the game-time temperature at 102 degrees, it seems like the extreme heat sapped many of the players of their energy, as FC Dallas and Chivas USA battled to a scoreless tie heading into halftime Saturday night at Pizza Hut Park.

Each squad had at least one good scoring opportunity, but were unable to capitalize, with Chivas goalkeeper Zach Thornton coming up with a nice save on Brek Shea’s 15-yard blast in the 19th minute.

FCD’s Kevin Hartman also made a fabulous lunging stop on Dario Delgado’s point-blank shot to continue the stalemate.

Nats` Pitcher Strasburg Leaves Game With Possible Wrist Injury

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 07:50 PM PDT

Todd Callahan – AHN Sports Reporter

Philadelphia, PA, United States (AHN) – The Philadelphia Phillies got to see rookie phenom Stephen Strasburg for the first time Saturday, but it only lasted 4 1-3 innings, as the Washington Nationals right-hander was forced to leave the game with a possible wrist injury.

Strasburg, making his second start since a short stint on the disabled list, had a one-ball, one-strike count on Philadelphia right fielder Domonic Brown and threw a 90 mph changeup for a ball.

Strasburg winced in pain, as Washington trainer Lee Kuntz rushed to the mound, along with manager Jim Riggleman and pitching coach Steve McCatty.

It was just the 56 pitch of the game for Strasburg, whose previous stint on the disabled list was for tightness in his right shoulder.

Before leaving, Strasburg allowed a run on two hits and struck out six before giving way to Craig Stammen.

Strasburg left the game with a 5-1 lead and contributed with his bat.

Not to be mistaken for an offensive threat, Strasberg faced Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick in the top of the third inning with the Nationals leading, 3-0.

With one out and the bases loaded, Strasberg hit a one-ball, two-strike sinker to second base.

Chase Utley threw to Jimmy Rollins to force out Ivan Rodriguez, but Strasburg beat the throw to first. Roger Bernadina scored, giving the rookie his first major league RBI.

Saturday’s game also marked the return of Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who was fresh off the disabled list.

In his first at-bat against Strasburg, Howard laced a curveball into center field for a single to lead off the second inning. Howard’s other at-bat was an RBI ground out to second base, scoring Placido Polanco, led the fourth inning off with a double.

This weekend’s series between the Phillies and Nationals was the first meeting since Philadelphia manager Jerry Manuel elected to not name Strasburg to the National All-Star team.

Before the game, the Phillies manager sounded like a fan rather than a manager.

“I’m excited to see him pitch,” Manuel said to mlb.com. “I don’t want him to beat us. I want to beat him. What I see from him is exciting. I get excited about his talent, style, ability. I know if he stays healthy, he’s going to pitch in the big leagues for a long time.”

With this being Strasburg’s second injury, and the Nationals’ cautious nature with the 22-year-old, Saturday’s start could be the final one of the season for the right-hander.

Edward Lewis – AHN Sports Reporter

Bristol, TN, United States (AHN) – Kyle Busch pulled off a rare NASCAR first when he won his third race of the week in Saturday night’s Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Busch, who won the Camping World Truck Series race Wednesday night and Nationwide race Friday, pulled off the rare NASCAR hat trick when he won Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.

The win allowed him to become the first driver in NASCAR history to win all three major touring series races at the same track in one weekend.

“It means a lot. I’m out of breath, I’ve been screaming the whole time” Busch said. “I can’t say enough about this team, Joe Gibbs Racing and Kyle Busch Motorsports earlier this week. It’s awesome. I love the opportunity to come out here. I love Bristol. I’ve been trying to do this since I got to NASCAR.”

Busch gained five spots in The Chase and moved up to third in the points, clinching a spot in The Chase for the Sprint Cup Series title.
