NZ vs SL Result: Hosts Sri Lanka win a low scoring encounter against New Zealand Posted: 13 Aug 2010 10:58 AM PDT
Sri Lanka had a tough time winning the second ODI of the series in this Sri Lanka vs. New Zealand tie. This victory also helped India regain the second spot which they had lost after their humiliating loss against New Zealand in the first match. Sri Lanka scored 195 for seven in 40.5 overs after being set a target of 193 with Upul Tharanga scoring the highest, 70 off 109 balls. Initially New Zealand were all out for 192 in 48.1 overs with Malinga and Mathews sharing six wickets among themselves. New Zealand began on a bad note losing half of their side in 23.1 overs. Nathan McCullum remained the sole fighter till the 45th over scoring a valiant 36 to lead his side to a respectable score. Sri Lanka were expected to chase the target with ease but it was not to be. Occasional falling of wickets kept them in a spot of bother, though opener Tharanga kept one side tight till safety. Captain Sangakkara and Samaraweera scored a respectable 48 and 36 to lead the side through. Sri Lanka vs New Zealand: Lankan bowlers check Kiwi run flow Posted: 13 Aug 2010 06:32 AM PDT Sri Lanka vs New Zealand The second match of the tri-series is taking place between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Dambulla and as per the latest reports the visitors have scored 192 runs in 48.1 overs. The Lankan bowlers seemed quite successful in taming the New Zealand batsmen and curbing the run flow. The Kiwis chose to bat after winning the toss, but was troubled in the beginning itself. Malinga removed Guptill in the start, but Ross Taylor and Watling tried to settle down things and scored 45 runs in the second wicket partnership. However, despite a brave display Watling was dismissed Angelo Mathews during his second spell. Taylor too was sent back by Mathews after being caught in front of the wicket. Williamson repeated the history as he was dismissed without scoring any run. However, Watling continued to fight with great caution and calculation. Scott Styris gave him good company for the fourth wicket partnership that piled up 52 runs. But Styris's innings was soon ended by Rangana Herath. Now the Kiwis were 105 for 5 and the return of Malinga quickly erased it to 123 for 7. However, McCullum, along with Kyle Mills and Tim Southee managed to take the score to 192. Given the poor batting history of the Dambulla pitch under the lights, New Zealand's total would not be that bad for the Sri Lankans to overcome.
Pitcher K-Rod Charged With Assault; Suspended Two Days By Mets Posted: 13 Aug 2010 04:54 AM PDT Jon Chik – AHN Sports Correspondent Flushing, NY, United States (AHN) – New York Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez was arrested and charged with third degree-assault after Wednesday evening’s 6-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies. He was suspended two days, the club announced Thursday/ Rodriguez, who did not pitch in the game, made a sudden exit from the New York locker room to the parking lot area of Citi Field where he allegedly got into a physical confrontation with his father-in-law. “There was an incident between Francisco Rodriguez and his father-in-law,” said Jay Horwitz, the Mets’ VP of media relations. “He was questioned by police and all other questions pertaining to this incident will be referred to the police department.” Immediately following the game, Rodriguez could be seen on his cell phone in the New York locker room. Even after he had hung up, however, Rodriguez became irate when approached by a reporter. “I got nothing to [expletive] say to you guys,” Rodriguez said. “Did I [expletive] pitch? Did I [expletive] pitch? Then why do I got to [expletive] talk?” Moments later, Rodriguez stormed away from his locker to an area where media members are not permitted to go, first looking back to say “Mind your [expletive] business.” Shortly after Rodriguez disappeared, a police officer and a security guard also went into the same media-restricted area. Rodriguez’s father-in-law was taken away via ambulance with what was described as multiple bruises and minor head injuries. Rodriguez was subsequently arrested following the confrontation. Mets manager Jerry Manuel opted not to turn the game over to Rodriguez in the eighth inning with the Mets leading the Rockies 2-1. Instead, Rodriguez could only watch from the bullpen as Colorado third baseman Melvin Mora launched a grand slam off New York reliever Manny Acosta, putting the Rockies in front by a score of 5-2. At his post game press conference, Mets manager Jerry Manuel explained his decision not to turn the ball over to K-Rod, telling reporters that using Rodriguez for a multi-inning save after he had pitched the night before is not an ideal strategy. “Usually when we use K-Rod the night before, we don’t expect him to have four or five outs the next night. We try to limit him to one inning,” Manuel said. “If there’s a situation where he had not pitched in a couple days, then we might give him a shot. “These are big games, no doubt about it. We’ve got to find a way to get that [final] out [of the eighth inning],” Manuel said. “The way we are offensively, it allows us no mistakes either by the pitchers, the defense, or even by me as far as strategy. We have no margin for error so we have to be exact in everything we do.” The blown lead and the 6-2 defeat were tough enough for the embattled Mets, who haven’t won back-to-back games since June 22-23 during interleague play at home against the Detroit Tigers. The Rodriguez incident could be a larger issue that follow the team as the Mets try to climb back into the postseason chase. The Mets (56-57) will try to put everything that happened Wednesday night – both on and off the field – in the rearview this afternoon in the rubber match against the Rockies (59-54). The Mets have not said whether or not Rodriguez will be called upon in a save situation. Report: Chargers LB Merriman Set To Sign Tender Posted: 13 Aug 2010 04:54 AM PDT John Nestor – AHN Sports Correspondent United States (AHN) – The San Diego Chargers will soon get a jolt to their defense as restricted free agent linebacker Shawne Merriman reportedly will join the team as early as this weekend. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Wednesday night a source said Merriman is close to signing his $3.269 million tender and reporting to camp. The source said that could come on the team’s off day Sunday, while the Union-Tribune stated that another source said it “could possibly be sooner.” Merriman has yet to officially inform the Chargers of his decision. Merriman knows he has to return to the team to prove he can still be a dominant defensive player . He addmitted as much last week and has not looked like the same player since returning from knee surgery last season. Merriman led the league with 39.5 sacks from 2005-07. He had reconstructive knee surgery in 2008 and returned to play last season, recording just four sacks. When Merriman returns to the fold the Chargers will still have two restricted free agents free agents to deal with in wide receiver Vincent Jackson and offensive tackle Marcus McNeill. Dolphins Linebacker Dansby: `I`m The Best In The League` Posted: 13 Aug 2010 03:16 AM PDT Chris Perkins – AHN Sports Correspondent Davie, FL, United States (AHN) – Karlos Dansby speaks with conviction, not hyperbole. So when you ask the Miami Dolphins linebacker where he considers himself among the NFL’s best playmakers at his position you know his answer is heartfelt. “The best,” said Dansby, who has 25.5 sacks, 10 interceptions and two touchdowns in his six-year career. “The best in the game, by far, man. By far, the best in the game.” Dolphins coach Tony Sparano didn’t go that far, but he gave a warm endorsement to the man who will star in the team’s new defense — a hybrid 3-4 scheme that focuses on attacking and making plays. “I always had a high opinion of him as a player (while coaching) against him,” Sparano said. Dansby (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) might be best known for his dramatic game-winning play last season that gave Arizona a 51-45 overtime playoff victory over Green Bay. Dansby scooped up a fumble by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and raced 17 yards into the end zone to deliver the Cardinals a victory in one of the highest-scoring playoff games in NFL history. It wasn’t the first time the 28-year-old Dansby, one of the defensive stars for the Arizona Cardinals team that advanced to Super Bowl XLIII in 2009, has flashed a flair for the dramatic. In 2005, his second season in the NFL, he returned two interceptions for touchdowns. In 2007 he forced four fumbles; in 2008, he recovered three fumbles. Understand this comes from a man who has never been named to the Pro Bowl. “Not making the Pro Bowl, it’s a lot of political things that go behind that,” Dansby said. “And that’s kind of out of my hands. All I can do is go out and play the game the way it’s supposed to be played.” Apparently, Dansby, the seventh-year player from Auburn who spent his first six seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, might not be alone in his opinion of being the best. After all, the Miami Dolphins signed him as a free agent during the off-season and made Dansby the highest paid linebacker in NFL history, giving him a five-year, $43 million contract with $22 million guaranteed. Dansby, a human missile who has averaged more than 100 tackles per year the last three years, didn’t keep the title long. San Francisco signed Patrick Willis to a five-year, $50 million contract later in the off-season. But being the highest-paid linebacker even for a few weeks was significant. “Definitely it was a goal,” Dansby said of being the NFL’s highest paid player at his position. “I feel like I’m the best; I feel like I should be paid as the best.” Fellow inside linebackers such as Baltimore’s Ray Lewis and Willis might have something to say about Dansby declaring himself the best. And Houston’s DeMeco Ryans, Carolina’s Jon Beason, New York’s Bart Scott and Dallas’ Bradie James might also have a debate. Dansby, however, is undeterred. “I want to get the yellow jacket,” he said, referring to the sports coat award to NFL Hall of Fame members. “I want to be a legend in this game and I think right now I’m the best in the league. That’s the way I feel.” Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved
Strikeforce To Hold Women`s Tournament Friday Night Posted: 13 Aug 2010 03:16 AM PDT Shawn Krest – AHN Sports Correspondent Phoenix, AZ, United States (AHN) – A night after Bellator’s 115 pound women’s tournament kicks off, Strikeforce Challengers gets into the women’s MMA game with a tournament of their own. A four-woman, single-elimination 135 pound tournament headlines Strikeforce Challengers 10, Friday night in Phoenix, Arizona. The winner of the tournament will earn a date with Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight champion Sarah Kaufman, who will be cageside Friday night. Kaufman knocked out previous number one contender Roxanne Modafferi with a third-round slam in July. “I think it’s a real interesting concept,” Kaufman said in a Strikeforce press release. “It has to be tough to have to train for potentially three different opponents.” Tournaments always have their share of uncertainty, but further muddying the waters for the Challengers women is the fact that even their first-round opponents are unknown. A random draw at Thursday night’s weigh-in will determine the opening-round matchups. The tournament has an international feel, as all four fighters hail from different countries. Representing the United States is Miesha “Takedown” Tate. The 9-2 Tate is no stranger to Strikeforce viewers on Showtime. She lost to Kaufman by unanimous decision in May of last year, before Kaufman held the title, and is looking for a rematch. In March, she scored a second-round submission over Zoila Frausto. “I’ve been looking forward to Sarah Kaufman since 10 seconds after we fought last year,” said Tate. “I think she’s my most sought after rematch. “I think I’m the favorite,” she continued. “In my opinion, I am. If you read stuff on the internet and message boards, I think people are picking me to win. That’s the consensus.” From Brazil is BJJ specialist Carina Damm. At 15-3, Damm is riding a 10-bout winning streak and has ended her last two in the first round. While Damm has never fought in Strikeforce before, her brother Rodrigo lost a lightweight title bout to Gilbert Melendez in April, 2009. Two weeks ago, it appeared that Damm would be eliminated from the tournament before the cage was even constructed. She was unable to get a visa to travel to the United States. Since then, the visa issues were resolved, and Damm will be ready to go on Friday night. “Just tell me who I’m fighting, and I’ll be ready for them,” she said. Representing Japan is Hitomi Akano. With two losses in her last three bouts and a 5-5 record in her last 10, Akano might be considered the tournament’s long shot. She suffered a knockout loss in her previous Strikeforce appearance, when she faced 145 pound champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. In addition to moving up a weight class, Akano faced a further uphill battle when Cyborg weighed in six pounds over. The fourth entrant is the unheralded Maiju Kujala, from Finland. Kujala is just 4-1 and has been a pro for less than a year. However, Kujala is the only fighter in the field to win two pro bouts on the same day. She went 2-0 with a submission and a decision at an event in the Netherlands in March. “I’ve fought in the tournament style before, so I have my own game plan and have prepared for each of the fighters,” said Kujala. “I know how to manage two fights in one night.” Tate also fought twice in a day, when she made her pro debut in November, 2007. After winning a decision in her first bout, she suffered a 30 second knockout by head kick in her second bout for the first of her two career losses. The tournament has had a few strange rules changes in the days leading up to the bouts. The rounds will be three minutes instead of five, and, on Wednesday, the Arizona State Boxing Commission ruled that there could only be two rounds, instead of three, in the opening round bouts. The final fight will be three rounds of three minutes each. Strikeforce attempted to get the Commission to agree to a “sudden victory” round, but their request was rejected. Instead, if the opening round fighters split the two rounds on the judges’ scorecards, the judges will then choose an outright winner. Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: Eagles Better Minus McNabb Posted: 13 Aug 2010 02:13 AM PDT AHN Sports Staff Arlington, TX, United States (AHN) – Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones was in his element Wednesday, claiming the Philadelphia Eagles are a much better squad without former starting quarterback Donovan McNabb. Jones, known for delivering bold comments and rants, provided his view on the McNabb-less Eagles coming to next season. Jones, 67, believed the Eagles would be a more consistent football team than they were with McNabb over the last 10 years. The owner added that McNabb’s stint with the Eagles was marred with inconsistency issues and his inability to deliver knock-out punch in big stage games. “McNabb helped create those big swings in our games over the last 10 years,” Jones told the Philadelphia Daily News. “When he played well, it was like throwing the knockout punch. When he didn’t, you were able to throw the knockout punch. With Kevin Kolb taking the starting quarterback role, Jones thinks the Eagles enter the 2010-2011 season as one of the favorites in the NFC East. Moreover, Jones also credited the team’s competitive roster and coaching personnel led by Eagles head coach Andy Reid. Jones’ Cowboys also enjoyed a strong offseason – barring Dez Bryant’s no rookie hazing approach that caused some controversy. The Cowboys defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 16-7 in an entertaining Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio last Sunday. Evander Holyfield, 48, To Face Sherman Williams In November Bout Posted: 13 Aug 2010 02:13 AM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) – Former heavyweight champion Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield, who despite his age is still aiming for a major fight, will once again step into the ring in November to face Sherman “The Caribbean Tank” Williams. Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KOs), coming off an eighth-round knockout of Francois Botha in April in Las Vegas that earned him a minor title, will be 48 when he fights Williams (34-11-2, 19 KOs) of the Bahamas in a 12-round bout at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan on Nov. 5. The former five-time heavyweight champion Holyfield is looking for a good comeback fight and a possible stab at titleholder Vitali Klitschko. The 37-year-old Williams has not fought since a unanimous decision loss to Manuel Charr in October in Germany. The fight, which is reportedly for the World Boxing Federation title, will be the biggest in the career for Williams, who previously faced several well-known opponents, including losses to former titlist Ruslan Chagaev and former challenger Jameel McCline. A multiple world champion in both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, Holyfield is the only boxer to capture the World Heavyweight title four times. Among the notable triumphs Holyfield registered were over the likes of George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe, Michael Moorer and his encounters with Mike Tyson. A Holyfield-Klitschko clash could be for the WBC crown. Raiders Owner Al Davis Says He Believes In Quarterback Campbell Posted: 13 Aug 2010 02:13 AM PDT Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor Oakland, CA, United States (AHN) – Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has stated that he expects new quarterback Jason Campbell help turn around the slumping club. In a radio interview Tuesday, Davis expressed his confidence in Campbell to lead the Raiders, who have slumped through the past seven years. “I really predict great things for (Campbell),” Davis said in an interview with Sirius NFL Radio. “I hope he doesn’t let me down. I don’t think he will.” Davis, whose team has not had a winning season since reaching the Super Bowl after the 2002 season, added, “This team has a lot of potential and a lot of great young players.” Campbell, who is coming off his best season, completing 64.5 percent of his passes with 20 TD and 15 interceptions, was acquired in a trade with the Redskins in the offseason. Campbell has started in 32 games for the Redskins since being selected in the first-round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He became expendable when Washington made a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for six-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb. Article © AHN – All Rights Reserved |
