Eng vs Pak 3rd Test: Hosts hope to continue domination

Eng vs Pak

The third test between England and Pakistan is commencing on 18th August at Oval. The hosts would be looking forward to a clean sweep after their nine wicket victory in the second test.

Though England had to fight hard for the win, their end success proved the gap between the two teams in terms of capabilities. England is gearing up for the Ashes and this tournament shall be a preparing ground for them ahead of facing the Australians.

Pakistan team doesn't look as confident as it used to be and carries its share of concerns. Zulqarnain Haider has been omitted from the series following a finger injury after a throw from Stuart Broad hit him. Kamran Akmal shall assume his place in the third test. Mohammed Yousuf is returning to test cricket in place of Umar Amin. Shoaib Malik would be replaced by Yasir Hameed, while Umar Gul's absence shall be compensated by debutant Wahab Riaz.

Captain Salman Butt has great confidence in Yousuf and hopes his presence will surely be a boost to the batting order. On the England side, Graeme Swann and other batsmen have displayed spectacular performances. However, Alistair Cook continues to struggle for form and the test would be a good opportunity to prove himself.

England has not lost a single match at Oval in the last eight and had claimed five of them. Also it is the same ground where four years back a game between the two teams was abandoned after allegations of ball tampering at the hands of the visitors.

Renee Gork fired over a hat?

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 12:05 PM PDT

In a shocking incident, local reporter Renee Gork was fired by Bobby Petrino, presently the head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks footballers. Apparently, what triggered this act was a simple question raises by reporter Renee Gork.

Renee, who was wearing a University of Florida hat that day, went to attend the University of Arkansas Footballers press conference on Saturday.

She did not know how things would turn out. The coach took up her question, which was the first question of the session. Post his lengthy reply, he refused to take any more questions because of that hat! Renee Gork felt that the coach was just cracking a joke, otherwise she would've taken it off right there.

Strangely, Renee Gork did apologise to the coach later. Yet, the decision to fire her was final and sealed. She was willing to apologise publically. Yet, twitter account revealed that she wouldn't do so on air because her job was already lost. She was fired! For wearing a hat? Its absurd.

Renee's former boss Dan Storrs claimed that there were other reasons to fire her. Some of the reasons given were sending tweet during practice time and how she would like to cover Florida team.

All this must've added to the coach's fury. Yet, Renee denies the truth behind these statements. The Head coach of Atlanta Falcons also resigned after such an act, to show disapproval. For now, the fate of Renee Gork seems headed nowhere till this mess clears up.

Tim Tebow thrives on challenges

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 11:47 AM PDT

Tim Tebow, an NFL quarterback for Denver Broncos has reasons to smile. He does smile as often as he can. A player, known for loving challenges, Tim Tebow can hardly resist it even when faced with squint eyed cynics.

On the face of many comments from sportsmen like quarterback of the Super Bowl or others, his confidence is still up.

The Tim Tebow magic showed itself on Sunday at the Cincinnati games. This 6.3" tall athlete weighing 243 pounds showed it he knows only one way to do; to do it his way.

He stood for all the qualities his Broncos coach had seen in him in college. He showed strength, agility and tough play.

Many of his moves and throws on the field stood out. One was initially thought of as a mechanical flaw when he ended up in a sack and fumble situation, yet after an instant replay the scenario was ruled out.

Tim Tebow's score at 8 for 13 for a 105 yards came with a final 7 yard touchdown towards the end of the game. However, he was criticizes by Brian Baldinger, who is a run analyst. He said that it wasn't a smart move. He will need to do more to survive NFL. Tim Tebow is happy to work his way up.

Positive side of thingsTim Tebow shows true sportsmanship when he fails to give up. He is all set to work hard and improve. Even before his games, he focuses on not getting 'amped-up'.

He relaxes by listening to country blues. Tim Tebow is made of original stuff. He doesn't hope to be one of those who start and start playing well form the very first day. He is willing to sweat it out on the field and he knows Broncos will not put so much pressure on him. Quarterbacks just can't be successful in a day confirms Trent Dilfer, an ESPN analyst.

Tim Tebow's games are a mixed of high and low points. Yet, Orton points out that there are many wow moments in the game.

Another agent Jimmy Sexton feels that it is only a matter of time. He is never very high or too low. He knows what he is doing.

When you say Tim can't do something, it is what throws the challenge right against his face. Tim Tebow is made up of some strong determination. Though he may appear different that most NFL players, it is his sports spirit that makes him who he is. Zeke Bratkowski, a former quarterback, lauds his challenge accepting abilities.

Though Tim Tebow has been subjected with confrontations all the time, even on matters like hairstyling, he is far from giving up. The Tim Tebow magic has just begun.

Coby Karl Cut By Nuggets; Could Still Reunite With Dad In Denver

Kareem Shaker – AHN Sports Reporter

Denver, CO, United States (AHN) – Coby Karl was waived by the Nuggets Friday, but reports are the 6-foot-5 guard out of Boise State may rejoin his father George in Denver.

Karl, 27, has played just 24 games in two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors averaging 2.4 points, one assist, and 1.3 rebounds per game.

“Coby has proven that he can contribute at the NBA level,” Dan Fegan, the agent for the son of Nuggets coach George Karl, said in an interview with FanHouse. “He’s gotten better every year. And we’re still in discussions with Denver regarding his situation. Just because he’s gotten waived doesn’t mean that he won’t be part of the Nuggets.”

Coby could also return to Europe, where he played for Spain’s Joventut Badalona early in 2009.

George and Coby have both recently succesfully fought off respective bouts of throat and thyroid cancer.

Denver also waived Brian Butch, the last possible day before he and Karl’s $854,389 minimum contracts would have become fully guaranteed for next season.

The Nuggets are down to 12 players, one shy of the NBA roster minimum but the team is already over the luxury-tax line. Adding any more contracts would cost them dollar-for-dollar in luxury tax.

Composer Rahman Seeks `Positive Publicity` For Commonwealth Games

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 06:13 AM PDT

AHN News Staff

New Delhi, India (AHN) – Oscar winner composer, A. R. Rahman, feels pained at the “negative publicity” generated around the mega-sports event, Commonwealth Games 2010. While saying so he urged the media persons to “present a positive image of the Games to the international community.”

Rahman was in Delhi on Monday, to attend a function when he spoke to the media about his “humble request.” Rahman has composed the theme song for the Games, which will be unveiled by August 26 this year.

The music maestro advised the journalists, “Hundreds of people are working day and night for making the Games successful. People across the world are asking if India will be able to hold them successfully. So kindly bring a positive image to the Games.”

Meanwhile, Rahman also talked about the Games’ theme song, that he presented to the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the Games. He informed, “I presented the theme song before the GoM and it was approved. I have been asked to tweak it and it will be released within next 10 days.”

When asked wouldn’t the wait be too long, Rahman said, “I think it won’t be good to release the theme song without making the necessary changes. Please be patient, it (song) is going to be good.”

Rahman assured that the song, dedicated to Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was different from pop sensation Shakira’s “Waka Waka” for the FIFA World Cup, earlier this year. He said that the theme song would be “full of energy” and the crown would be asked to join in.

At the same function, Suresh Kalmadi, who heads the Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee and was recently clipped off all his powers, quoted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, to say that the Games, to be held between October 3 and 14, would be no less than a “national festival.”

The Commonwealth Games have been marred in corruption scandals and allegations since the past few months, ever since it became evident that the preparations for the event were falling way behind schedule.

`What Bunker?`: Dustin Johnson`s Two Dreaded Words At PGA

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 05:43 AM PDT

Tom Edrington – AHN Sports Reporter

Kohler, WI, United States (AHN) – ” And I know, it’s my own damn fault”

— Jimmy Buffet, Margaritaville

Two words uttered by Dustin Johnson as he walked off the 72nd green at the 92nd PGA Championship this past Sunday will long be remembered as the beginning of the end for his hopes of winning that first major championship.

Johnson had just missed a six foot putt for par at the difficult 18th hole that would have seemingly given him victory in the PGA.

He would have posted a 12-under par score of 276 for a one-shot win over Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer. Instead, he finished at 11-under and was prepared to go into a playoff with those two men.

Then David Price, a member of the PGA of America, the official who walked the final round with Johnson and Nick Watney, told Johnson that he may have grounded his club in a bunker on his approach shot to the final green.

“What bunker?” is what Johnson simply asked in reaction to Price.

Johnson spent the next 15 minutes in the scorer’s room where the terrible reality set in.

“I think I’m going into a playoff and I’ve got a two stroke penalty,” is how the 26-year old from Myrtle Beach remembers what followed.

Johnson later admitted he never read the rules sheet that was handed out early in the week to all competitors and then posted in the players’ locker room.

He’s not the only one who didn’t read the local rules.

“I feel for him. I’ve never read a rules sheet, I don’t think anyone reads a rules sheet,” proclaimed Watney, who led going into the final round but whose 81 brought back memories of Johnson’s final day at Pebble Beach.

Johnson readily admitted he grounded his club when he discussed the incident in the scorer’s room. “But I never thought I was in a bunker,” he explained.

The place was buzzing as the rumor of the two-shot penalty filtered around Whistling Straits.

“Bubba and I were talking about it,” eventual champion Martine Kaymer said, as he passed time talking to Bubba Watson, who he defeated by a shot in the playoff. “It’s very sad.”

It was indeed a tragedy of the competition and a reminder that the same course had similar controversy in 2004. Stuart Appleby was assessed not one, but two, two-stroke penalties when he moved a stone and then grounded his club in one of the out-of-the-way bunkers.

That is one reason it was the first and foremost item posted on the players’ rules sheets.

Johnson’s mistake was to assume that it wasn’t a bunker. He had Price close by and could have protected himself simply by asking for a quick ruling.

Mark Wilson of the PGA of America made exactly that point. “We offer the walking official in the leading groups if the player has a question.”

Brandel Chamblee of the Golf Channel, a former PGA Tour member simply stated: “He (Johnson) did not have his wits about him.”

In the end, Johnson was a total gentleman about the situation. He blamed no one.

The championship that began with fog shrouding the layout on the shores of Lake Michigan, ended with a decision that left a lingering cloud over the event.

After the victory over Sri Lanka in the second match, Virender Sehwag seemed upset over the last ball he faced that handed India with the winning run. The delivery by Suraj Randiv was a no ball, and Sehwag was left at 99 not out despite hitting a six out of the ball.

Sehwag criticized Lanka of unsporting behavior that denied him a well deserved century. Suraj Randiv came past the no ball line and India's six wicket win was guaranteed by the no ball run. Sehwag's sixer went in vain. “They (Sri Lanka) should have shown sportsman’s spirit. It was done deliberately. If there is a player on 99, it does not mean you bowl a no-ball. That has no place in cricket", said Sehwag. Meanwhile Sri Lanka's captain announced that he didn't know if the no-ball was bowled deliberately, but was quick to add that such incidents had no place in cricket. He also said may be Suraj was trying a doosra. However, after accusations that Randiv might have acted upon some players' instruction, Sangakkara assured he would look into the allegations.

However, Sehwag later revealed that Randiv had apologized to him for the act. In addition, India manager Ranjib Biswal said that Sri Lanka Cricket Board secretary Nishantha Ranatunga too had expressed the board's apology on the incident as it was against the spirit of the game.
