Celebrated pitcher Roger Clemens claims innocence and duping the Congress

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 01:00 PM PDT

In response to his bill of indictment Roger Clemens, the stalwart baseball player of his times, claimed not blameworthy to the U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton saying he beguiled the Congress about usage of banned substances while he was still playing.

There was a time during his illustrious career of 24 fruitful years when the pitcher, seven-time receiver of Cy Young Award, registered 354 wins (ninth all-time), 4,672 strikeouts (third) and a fabulous 3.12 run average achieved in 2007 before he bid the game farewell.

The athlete may be sentenced to remain 30 years behind the bars and a cash penalty of $1.5-million to be paid by him. The dubious remarks he made thrice, two charges of false testimony as well as stalling of the proceedings of the Congress all go against his reputation earned as a successful baseball player leading to his trial. In 2008 the Oversight and Government Reform committee recorded his oath as he had “never taken steroids or HGH” but these statements figuring in the "Mitchell Report" were found to be contradictory to those of his former trainer, Brian McNamee and Andy Pettitte claiming that he was lying.

His counter statement to prove himself on Twitter was “I look forward to challenging the Governments accusations, and hope people will keep an open mind until trial. I appreciate the support I have been getting. I am happy to finally have my day in court.”

Roger Clemens is vehemently keeping his stand on the fact that he lied to the Congress about taking HGH, or human growth hormone to boost his performance as a player yet not accusable in these cases.

Questions of explanations and demands of lifetime ban have been raised against the players taken up in the investigation – Pakistan captain Salman Butt, bowlers Mohammad Aamir and Mohammad Asif. It is also a debatable point about the faithfulness of the upcoming matches and that of the next month's ODI series between England and Pakistan.

What more the former England player Vaughan has to comment is: “The game has to be cleaned up. This is the chance to change the game forever and stamp this kind of thing out. Finally, the game’s administrators cannot run and hide. The only way the game will move forward is by hitting those involved with life bans if they are found guilty.”

Asif Involved in Spot-Fixing: Ex-Girlfriend

Veena Malik and Mohammed Asif

Veena Malik and Mohammed Asif

Muhammad Asif's troubled times are less than over it seems. There have been fresh allegations in his name regarding his involvement with bookmakers. This time the source is formidable as well. His ex-girlfriend, famous Pakistani actor, Veena Malik ascertained in no uncertain means his links with known bookmakers in very recent times. She even claimed that she is not speaking on a grave issue such as this without any conclusive proof.

Veena, whose break-up with Asif  this year was a favourite of media earlier this year, stated that the Pakistani cricketer Asif, had been involved with a recognised Indian Bookmaker called Dikshit and was even paid by him for spot fixing. “Asif used to call up this Indian bookmaker and other bookies as well on the phone of his servant. I have evidence of the messages he exchanged with the bookies,” said an adamant Veena who's evidently bitter and waved around a list of texts Asif and the so-called Dikshit have allegedly exchanged.

Malik and Asif's relationship had ended in a rather sullen note with Asif readily foregoing her for a girl whom his parent's had given consent to. This was replied by Veena with a court case demanding Rs 13 million which the actor claimed Asif owed her. The latter denied the charges vehemently and the exchange led to open hostility. However it was settled by mediation of a common acquaintance.

Veena explains that she had gathered from her conversations with Asif that Pakistan would not win any tests until 2010 and that spot selection was lucrative for him. Also, it doesn't directly affect the match results.

“I have more evidence of his involvement and I can show that he and some other players also indulged in spot fixing on the Australian tour,” she added.

Veena made the matter even more grave and controversial when she added that Asif had resorted to bribery to escape a suspension which would have lasted longer. She was speaking of course of the positive dope test in the Indian Premier League just 2 years back.

Let us see how Asif counteracts these allegations which seem to carry a lot of weight?

What do you have to suggest, is Asif innocent? Is he being framed by a revengeful ex or is he really guilty?
