Following England’s impressive batting on the final two days, the Australian bowling has come under intense scrutiny. The skipper insisted that on consideration of the hardcore statistical figures England were no different from the Aussies in terms of performance and a lot of positives came out of the game during its course. Ponting singled out centuries by Mike Hussey and Brad Haddin and the bowling of Peter Siddle plus Ben Hilfenhaus in England’s second innings as important contributions. He maintained that only few made any meaningful impact and stressed on the need for 9, 10 or 11 players delivering key performances for ensuring victory in the remainder of the series. With the team to be named on Thursday, Mitchell Johnson looks likely to be axed making way for Doug Bollinger along with Ryan Harris after subjecting the latter to a medical assessment of his troublesome knee following a surgery. Ponting along with the team management would like to ensure that he is in a position to shoulder the workload of a Test Match. |
[Live] India vs New Zealand 2nd ODI: Toss and Turn to be a crucial deciding factor Posted: 01 Dec 2010 01:21 AM PST
JAIPUR: India faces New Zealand on Wednesday for the 2nd ODI in this series of five one-day internationals. The toss and turn at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium will decide the fate of this day-night game. Gautam Gambhir, who is standing-in for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, said that the toss will be a crucial factor keeping the evening dew in consideration. He also said that an extra spinner will prove really helpful expecting the early turn. R. Ashwin is the only specialist spinner in the squad and Gambhir may try out Ravindra Jadeja but he may take some time to fit in such an environment. Ashish Nehra and S Sreesanth could not make the most at the Rajasthan Cricket Association Academy. But, on the other hand, Munaf Patel and Vinay Kumar had long spells on the nets on Tuesday and could share the responsibility with Sreesanth if Nehra is given a rest in this game. Yuvraj Singh has proven himself time and again as a part-time spinner. Yusuf Pathan and Suresh Raina can be called to assist as and when the need arises. New Zealand is bracing the absence of fast bowler Darry Tuffy because of a bicep strain. Tuffy had graabed two wickets in Guwahati which included that of Murali Vijay. A decision is yet to be made on his replacement. Vettori announced on Wednesday that he was fit enough to play in this game and that the spinners carry a big responsibility in the conditions of this sub-continent. Vettori will prove to be a big moral boost for the visitors as Gambhir has already declared the venue as a slow wicket. Both the teams will try to lay their preference on fielding after winning the toss for it would not be easy to score in this track. The track is almost devoid of grass because the curator Taposh Chatterjee was eager to provide a flat wicket. But the unseasonable rain may reduce the chances of a good bounce. India already has a 1-0 lead in the series which they would like to further build upon in this game. The last ODI at Sawai Mansingh Stadium was a breath-taking competition where India defeated South Africa by just 1 run earlier this year. |
Ralph Friedgen crowned Football Coach of the Year by ACC Posted: 01 Dec 2010 12:20 AM PST
The Atlantic Coast Conference honoured Ralph Friedgen (Maryland football coach) with the Coach of the Year award on Tuesday. Ralph has led the Terrapins on to a remarkable season, hence winning him this recognition. Friedgen left behind his nearest competitor, Frank Beamer of Virginia Tech by a margin of ten votes in order to clinch this honour. This is the second time Ralph has been honoured with this title, the first time being in 2001. North Carolina State coach Tom O’Brien and Florida State's Jimbo Fisherwere also in the running receiving six votes each.In 2001, Friedgen guided the Terps to hold a 10-2 record. In addition, Maryland also won the first ACC title by a team other than Florida State, ever since the introduction of Seminoles into the league. The Terps stand on a current statistic of 8-4 after their 2-10 standing of last season. The Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association named Terps quarterback Danny O'Brien as the top overall and offensive rookie, while Xavier Rhodes of Florida State was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year by ACC. This second laurel of the 64 year old coach in the decade certainly does the Terps and fans proud. |
