Indian Hockey Year’s high and Low

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 09:15 AM PST

2010 Will be regarded as a year of highs and lows in the annals of Indian hockey. The starting of the year saw the men's team putting up arms together against the callous administrators of the game.

These authorities till now were more occupied with politics giving little or no attention for the development of the game or the welfare of the players. The players were demanding their dues to be given.

A series of allegations and counter allegations were exchanged between the two fighting forces. A lot of persuasion finally led to peace. But the game paid a heavy price Indian team finished a tame ninth in the tournament.

Taking a cue from their male counterparts, the Indian women hockey players rebelled against their rulers. They highlighted the sad financial situation by a fund raising campaign.

When this showed encouraging results the administrators of the game started to look for the excuses. To rub further salt on the wounds the Coach and the Physio were sacked.

The coach Maharaj Kishen Kaushik was charged for sexual harassment while the physio Basavaraj was caught on tape in a compromising position. And lo behold the Asiad and the world cup was just round the corner. Sandeep Somesh and Khalid Modi took over the reign as the coach.

The men's hockey team won the Silver medal at the Commonwealth games and the Bronze medal at the Asian Games to restore some pride.

However, the 8-0 triumph of the Australians in the commonwealth games final clearly reflected the standard of the Indian hockey. As it often happens, the Spanish coach, Jose Brasa went back.

The inclusion of Sardara Singh and Rani Rampal salvaged a little respect for the game when their name was included in the All-Star men’s and women’s teams by the Rani Rampal to the International Hockey Federation’s (FIH)

Ind vs SA 2nd Test: Hopes for The Fair Pitch at Kingsmead

Posted: 22 Dec 2010 11:59 PM PST

A crucial factor for the South Africa vs India match is Kingsmead's pitch. Concerns regarding pitch got eased with the appearance of The Sun in Durban but Wilson Ngobese, the chief groundsman at Kingsmead, isn't yet ready to predict the nature of the pitch.

Currently, the track is hard enough and green to favor bowlers but Ngobese doesn't want to be biased and wished to get a fair pitch for both bowlers and batsmen.

Fearing with the repeatition of Centurian where the toss became a major factor because of the moisture retained by the covered pitch. With only two days of fair weather until now rain is expected to make the pitch just.

“I want to give a wicket that is fair for everybody,” Ngobese said, pointing towards the pitch. “It must not excessively help the bowlers too, and then if you can’t bat I can’t help it.

But we are expecting more rain till the start of the match, and I am hoping for more such sunny days. Still, it should help the bowlers with good bounce.” Though, BBC Weather has forecast light rains for Friday and Saturday and heavy showers may be for the first day of the match.

Ngobese said pointing towards the sky, “If that man has other plans, I am helpless.” According to him, sea breeze will help the bowlers, excluding the one blowing from west to east, into the Indian Ocean, which can be risky.

Till now everyone in the ground staff is hoping for the good weather till the match start.
