HATAY (TURKEY): Koneru Humpy of India was ousted of the World Women's chess championship following the draw in the second game of the semifinal match where she faced the Chinese player Yifan Hao.

Humpy needed to win this game to ensure her journey further in the championship for she had lost the first game of the semi-finals. But this draw has crashed her out of the championship with a 0.5-1.5.

Humpy must have had a sense of déjà vu as she has lost out to Hao in the last World Championship held at Nalchik (Russia) in the semis.

Humpy eviction means that India no longer has a stand in the Championship and the Chinese have no competition from outside for the first time since the Championships have begun.

The other semifinal carried between Zhao Xue and Ruan Lufei, both from China, led to a tie-breaker that ended in a quick draw.

Humpy was struggling from the very beginning in the game while Yifan on the other hand seemed quite confident. Humpy lost a full point owing to Berling defense in the initial game and Sicilian through transposition cost a point in the second game.

Yifan slowed for quite a while when Humpy opted for the Torre attack with the white pieces in hand. Humpy set the board in a mélange of Najdorf and Classical variation which tensed Yifan as she had to let go of a couple of pawns for setting off an attack against the king.

Humpy and the chess experts had laid down their hopes on her for she seemed in command in the beginning but only till the Chinese counter attacked and changed the scene entirely. Humpy had to be satisfied with a draw after 5 moves.

The Indian got the prize money of $20,000 of which 20% will go to the FIDE.

Semis Results: Zhao Xue (China) and Ruan Lufei (China) – draw; Koneru Humpy (India) and Yifan Hao (China) – draw; Hao has ensured her place in the finals.
